I was thinking about helping you with this and so I had a look at the Czech Wikipedia article once more. I must say that it seems to be quite bad. It is not neutrally written and also contains some questionable statements. Most statements lack sources and therefore are not possible to verify and I am quite reluctant to write about something, which I am not sure whether it is true or not. If you have the sources, maybe you could start with adding them to the Czech article. However, the article needs quite a lot of work and I am not sure, whether I will be able to do it in such a short time. But if you provide the sources, I will try. You may be interested in voicing your opinion at current CFD nomination. The nominator attempts to rename all categories about cities, towns and villages into "populated places" categories. This also relates to the Czech Republic and Slovakia-related categories. Just for the reminder, we use already a proper categorization scheme, where města (cities and towns) and obce (villages) are clearly differentiated. The current list of German exonyms for the Czech Republic shows that the former Schneiderhof is now called Mysliv. I have a suspicion that this is incorrect, that Schneiderhof is no longer in existence, and that it's former site is, instead, very close to the present Vseruby u Kdyne (Vseruby). Hello. According do German Wikipedia, the village of Myslív (German: Schneiderhof) was a part of Všeruby u Kdyně, but in 1955 was abandoned. Hello Darwinek: Thank you for responding. I have ancestors from Schneiderhof and I have come to understand that the old Schneiderhof was near Vseruby. Trying to locate their ancestral home (Schneiderhof) has been very difficult due to Schneiderhof being listed on the exonym page as the current Mysliv. This is misleading because there is a village named Mysliv further to the east in the Czech Republic and just south of Nepomuk. I was erroneously led to look there for my ancestral home. It seems to me that the exonym entry should be modified to reflect that the former Schneiderhof is not the current Mysliv but is, in fact, a deserted site near Vseruby (0.9 miles west northwest). This is my first time to try to discuss this with someone so I would like other opinions and maybe a suggestion about how to make the change if you agree that it should be done. Sure, feel free to make the change. By the way, here is a link to the Czech website storing information about deserted villages in the Czech Republic. It says the population of this small village was ethnically German. Germans were expelled after WWII and the village was deserted. After 1945 it was briefly "re-settled" by Czechs, but they were forced to move as the village was located in the sensitive border area. In the early 1970s the area of the former village was cleared and the security border zone of the communist Czechoslovakia was located there. The version of this I edited translated Chcete mě? as you show me? (without the Czech name) which is not only disastrous, but names are not supposed to translate in the 21st century! I know English historically is horrifically Slavophobic as a language, but there's really no need to replace every mention of Sto Zviřat (as in the Ska band) with "100 animals" or N.O.H.A. with "Foot" just because this is English Wikipedia, else we also move

Hmm, the "owner" of these articles writes in an edit summary undo move to invoke Bold, Revert, Discuss cycle yet I don't see much discussion going on? Don't get me wrong, English used to mutilate Slavic names. I know when it comes to people notable in earlier centuries we have the option of using a Slavophobic equivalent which was used predominantly in English sources (e.g. Bronislava Nijinska), but that's because at that time that was the common way of doing things, especially since a lot of people had a variant of their name written in Cyrillic. Nowadays it really isn't, you leave diacritics where they are, especially in an encyclopedia. Either way you definitely don't just remove the diacritics without transcribing the name properly. Yes, I guess there is an argument that most English language sources will use the name without diacritics, but this is just down to laziness, and I think there's a point when you draw the line and say if a source can't spell someone's name right, it's not a reliable source. - filelakeshoe 09:57, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

My personal opinion on (Czecho)slovak/-ian is that it only exists because if you say "Slovakia" to an English person they automatically think "Slovakian" is the demonym because it sounds like it should be. Fundamentally it's as incorrect as calling Dutch people "Hollish", but because it's a common mistake it's made its way into the dictionary. I'm sure sources about (Czecho)slovakia, written by people who've been there and have knowledge would use "Slovak" and "Czechoslovak" more commonly than "Slovakian" and "Czechoslovakian". It's always dangerous to base these things on personal opinion. The Oxford Dictionary allows "Slovakian", "Czechoslovakian" and "Czechoslovak" as both adjectives and nouns. "Slovak" is a native or national of Slovakia or a person of Slovak descent or the language. The point is that we have sort of naming dualism here on Wikipedia. Categories related to Slovakia use almost exclusively the form "Slovak". It was closed as 'keep'. I noticed an interesting thing. The article in its current state mentions specifics of pig slaughtering in Canada, Croatia, Serbia, Czech Republic and Slovakia. Some people have expressed their concerns that the article is focused too much on Eastern European countries. None of the countries is a part of Eastern Europe. The area of today's Czech Republic was, for almost all its history, connected culturally with the Western world. In the second half of the 20th century my nation became a part of the mighty Soviet empire. The consequences were terrible: murdering, arresting, expelling of the intelligentsia, fear etc. However, the 40-year-lasting Soviet dominance has another consequence. My country is still perceived as a part of the Eastern world. I noticed the same thing at my RfA (... we need more Eastern European admins ... ) It is funny and sad at the same time. --

Yes, agreed - it is funny and sad, if it comes from the pen of contributors to Wikipedia (while everyone here can read so nicely balanced articles on the subject - Central Europe and Eastern Europe..) - and western public generally. But it is really annoying and quite terrifying from the mouth of Sergey Lavrov.

There really was actually such a situation, when he was explicitly asked in public - that he would not sort Czech Republic into the Eastern Europe (it was just in the ongoing debate over the

missile defense shield stationed in CZ

- note: and we are there the Eastern Europe again). His response was immediate and stinging - that according to the UN classification, Czech Republic simply belongs to Eastern Europe - and that's it.

So it seems, that we have one more inheritance from that Soviet times: this stupid Europe division seems to be codified forever within the UN mummified structures..

I think this is turning into a debate which is more properly carried out elsewhere. I suspect, though, that there are various definitions for "Eastern Europe" so don't expect a neat answer. For many English-speakers "Eastern Europe" became almost synonymous with "Eastern Bloc", so you are not going to shift that perspective easily. You are right, Bemicourt, we can do little to change it and the discussion here is pointless. But I don't think it is a matter of a simple "geographical description". Small and young European nations still struggle for their self-determination. Their point of view is different from long-established powers, they feel threatened (history gave them lessons many times) and they still need to defend themselves. Perhaps that's why I feel disappointed when someone call me an "Eastern European". My identity is different. --

It is "official", but it hasn't caught on in English unlike in other languages cs:Česko, de:Tschechien, so the article is named Czech Republic. Not sure if this has come up but there's definitely an argument among Czechs that the name "Česko" to describe the current state is misleading, while others (as you can see from the talk page) eschew "Česká Republika" as their perpetually despised politicians trying to censor something. You may also be interested to know what Wikipedia's founder, Jimbo Wales has to say on this subject. He recently made persuasive arguments on his talk page in support of moving articles to use English in their titles. Jimbo Wales expressed his persuasive opinion on the use of diacritics in Wikipedia saying “our use of diacritics is already very bad and very out of control. There are many reasons why the English Wikipedia should be written in English, and this is one of the strongest."[8]. He went on to write: "To answer a bunch of specific questions above in one go: yes, all of those renamings to use English rather than foreign languages should happen immediately. I don't care what Britannica and Encarta do; they are resources for the 20th century, which is behind us now. Such an idiotic battle makes no sense, Darwinek. Perhaps it is time to accept the fact that Wikipedia is not "the sum of all human knowledge" (I admit that I find this phrase laughable and pompous), but rather a short-sighted project limited by cultural differences. It looks that the accent marks could be really harmful to the mental state of an average English reader, and it is more important than providing correct information. It is a step back, and that's the most disappointing thing for me. I'm starting to think it would be better to give it up rather than adopt this disgraceful style of arguing. It is bellow my level. --

If I were an uninvolved admin I would probably close each diacritics related RM from either side. Since these are all just copy paste rationale requests, there should be a centralised discussion going on. Having the same argument (use diacritics because of accuracy vs. i dont like foreign things & flawed google searches) on 20 different talk pages is not going to achieve anything. - filelakeshoe 10:22, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
