Background
The track, nicknamed "The Monster Mile", was built in 1969 by Melvin Joseph of Melvin L. Joseph Construction Company, Inc., with an asphalt surface, but was replaced with concrete in 1995. Six years later in 2001, the track's capacity increased to 135,000 seats, giving the track the largest seating capacity of any sports venue in the mid-Atlantic region. First practice

Qualifying
Qualifying was originally going to be held on Friday, May 13, at 2:15 pm
Qualifying would be cancelled due to inclement weather. The starting lineup would be determined by speeds in first practice. As a result, William Byron, driving for Kyle Busch Motorsports would earn the pole.[7]
Austin Cindric and Norm Benning would fail to qualify.
