Romania made its Paralympic Games début at the 1972 Summer Paralympics in Heidelberg, sending a single representative (Alex Peer) to compete in table tennis. He was eliminated in his first match.
Romania also competed in the 1992 Paralympic Games for the Intellectually Disabled, held in Madrid, Spain. Romanian athletes won 23 medals in total, 10 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze, and although the country's National Paralympic Committee does not recognize these medals, they are recognized by researchers and are added to the overall historical medal table.
