The Special Barnstar
Amazing body of work you do here, even one month!! We're very lucky to have you as an editor! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:51, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
 • Thanks very much, Dr. Blofeld. Glad to receive your appreciation. I remember the days when you were just as active yourself. But of course the only reason I do it is because I enjoy it, particularly reviving interest in women who deserve wider recognition.--Ipigott (talk) 11:57, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge

Did you mean to put the Filipina Joan Carling and the Mongolian Bayarjargal Agvaantseren on to this page? On reading the articles neither mentions Africa. Quetzal1964 (talk) 17:38, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

Quetzal1964: Thanks for alerting me. I've now moved them to Asia and added Emna Mizouni.--Ipigott (talk) 06:37, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

18% etc

After the useful "archaeology" on the WiR talk, it occurred to me that it would be good to give a summary of the movement over the years in the famous number on the WiR main page, rather than just the current number. Not difficult, thanks to you regular updating, but it's probably better you do it rather than me. What do you think? Johnbod (talk) 13:24, 15 September 2019 (UTC)

Johnbod: I did include the 2014 figures on the main WiR page. Are you thinking of a month-by-month or year-by-year account of progress? I'm not too good at graphs but that might be the best way to present things.--Ipigott (talk) 18:07, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
Ok, thanks - missed that. I was thinking of maybe just a list of annual or 6 monthly figures, but a graph would be good. No doubt someone on the WiR talk could do it. Johnbod (talk) 21:13, 15 September 2019 (UTC
Johnbod: Maybe Maximilianklein or Envlh or anyone interested in developing new Gender Data Tools. I believe Max has kept records from Wikipedia dumps for quite some time. That may help to trace development. Perhaps Rosie would be interested in illustrating development in one of her future presentations.--Ipigott (talk) 06:49, 16 September 2019 (UTC)
@
Smithsonian for the Ada Lovelace Day event). Camelia.boban and I will be presenting on content gender gap at the Wiki CEE Meeting on October 11th and we could include it in that slidedeck. I would also incorporate when I speak on content gender gap at Wikidatacon at the end of October, and at WikiConference North America in early November. So, you see, this would get a lot of exposure if someone has the time/inclination/ability to create the representation of our percentage changes. And I am just one person; there are others who do talks who would be able to incorporate this into their slidedecks. Adding Victuallers as he also presents on Women in Red, and he created the graphs for our initial slidedeck when we launched Women in Red at Wikimania 2015 so he might have some thoughts on this. --Rosiestep (talk
) 15:22, 16 September 2019 (UTC)
Rosiestep: There's likely to be a gap between October 2014 and 24 March 2016 when you first added "16.08%" to the introduction on our main page. I'm not sure where that figure came from. On 27 April Dr. Blofeld updated this to 16.13% and added "217,442 out of 1,347,281 in total". I don't know if WHGI (or anyone else) kept any trace of figures prior to that date. (It looks as if the first WHGI came out in January 2016.) Since 14 June 2016 (16.28%), we have been updating the figures pretty regularly. If no one else can present the figures as graphs, perhaps Tagishsimon can help us out. He seems to be able to cope with any kind of technicality.--Ipigott (talk) 15:56, 16 September 2019 (UTC)
Victuallers and I became aware of WIGI and started meeting with Maximilianklein before the July 2015 Women in Red launch, so I am assuming that the 16.08% came from WIGI. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:02, 16 September 2019 (UTC)
@Envlh, Ipigott, Johnbod, and Rosiestep:, I'm so glad to see such a momentous milestone reached, 18%. That really has moved the needle, WHGI has been keeping track since September 2014 where enwiki showed just 15.5%. I'm hearing 2 different data requests A) put together a celebratory evolutionary graph B) could such a graph be automatically part of our data tools. I think A) is a cool idea I would be glad to support someone to make a visualization (all the data could be downloaded and compiled by via these CSVs (DATE/property_indexes/site-links.csv), although I don't quite have the bandwidth for it at the moment. B) Evolutionary charts are a key feature that Envlh want to develop for the next 'merged' version of our tools, so it's already on the list (but won't be available soon). Again congratulations to everyone at Women in Red for making a real, measurable difference! Maximilianklein (talk) 17:02, 16 September 2019 (UTC)
@Maximilianklein, Ipigott, Johnbod, and Rosiestep: Hi and sorry for the late reply. Congratulations for the milestone, thank you all for your work and your feedback! The comments on T230184 will be very useful. Rosie: I'll be happy to meet you at WikidataCon! Cheers, Envlh (talk) 19:21, 22 September 2019 (UTC)

Well done everybody! On to 20% now.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:47, 16 September 2019 (UTC)

Zdeňka Wiedermannová-Motyčkova

If ever there was an article which pointed out why we need to look for where sources are likely found, this is it. Google search returns very limited results, but searching university databases returns a wealth of theses written about her from gender studies, history, etc. If you have the time or inclination, can you please give it a copy edit? Thank you. SusunW (talk) 20:25, 16 September 2019 (UTC)

As usual, you've done a very good job on this. I changed "higher education" in the lead to "more extensive education" as I think higher education usually refers to universities. She seems to have worked mainly on high schools and normal schools. If you are aiming for GA, there should be more illustrations. I see there are a few on the Czech article and its links. Maybe you could find something on the Moravian women's movement.--Ipigott (talk) 11:23, 17 September 2019 (UTC)
Cool, I shall look for photos. Hadn't actually done that yet, except for loading the photograph of her father, which I found while writing her article. He doesn't yet have an article (en or cs), but is clearly a notable figure from the bio I found on him. Thank you so much for reviewing it. Your work always improves mine and I appreciate it. SusunW (talk) 13:37, 17 September 2019 (UTC)
Found a fabulous photo [1] but I need help with the who is in it. On the original version, I included the text, but cropped it for Wiedermannová's article. I can see her name, and I think it says she is the second from the left and standing? Can you read the text and tell me what it says and who else is in it? SusunW (talk) 17:25, 17 September 2019 (UTC)
I'm afraid I am not authorized to view that site and therefore cannot read the caption.--Ipigott (talk) 06:19, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
Ooh and a photo of the memorial plaque at the gymnasium dedicated to her! (Okay, it's a little blurry, but you can still make out her name and considering it disappeared in 1939 ...) SusunW (talk) 19:07, 17 September 2019 (UTC)
My husband is dying to know who the man with the stick is, LOL SusunW (talk) 19:15, 17 September 2019 (UTC)
SusunW: The plaque is good. The article looks fine now with the illustrations you have found.--Ipigott (talk) 07:25, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
Ian, just look at the first upload at the bottom of the page labeled "file history" on Commons, I included all the text there. Sorry if I wasn't clear. SusunW (talk) 14:31, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
SusunW: Yes, back row, second from the left. I'll try to see who else is mentioned but you can probably see the names just as well as I can. Czech is not one of my languages. Why not ask your Czech friend?--Ipigott (talk) 15:45, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
I can pick out names, but short of using a character map to type out the rest of the text so I can translate it, I can't read it. Glad to know I was right that the first list is seated and second is standing. I don't think it's necessary to caption who is in it in her article (I just pointed out she was 2nd from the left), but I do think it would be good to have on the photo on Seventh Conference of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance. I'll asked my friend Pavla and see if she can help. SusunW (talk) 15:56, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
I think we got it, though I have no idea who "Vil. Mohr" from Berlin who was an anti-prostitution campaigner is, nor where the last two people are from. But, the rest of them are identified. SusunW (talk) 17:44, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

Dayan Kodua

Hello user:Ipigott, I would be very glad if you could review these articles; Dayan Kodua and Obuobia Darko-Opoku for me. Thank you --Celestinesucess (talk) 07:19, 26 September 2019 (UTC)

Celestinesucess: Good to see you've already created two more. I've tidied up Kodua a bit, adding quite a few wiki links. I see you have drawn heavily on the German article and its sources (or perhaps the IMDb biography which used a translation). For the English version, it would be useful if you could use more sources to justify all the information. In general, we like to have at least one meaningful reference for each paragraph, although you can of course use the same reference as often as you need to. (I see lots more information about her is available from a simple internet search.) Though short, Darko-Opoku is well sourced. Thanks for including defaultsort and more categories in both articles. Hope this helps. Keep up the good work!--Ipigott (talk) 09:46, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
Ipigott, thank you for the corrections and the encouragement. There are so many references online about her but most of them are in German. I know this but I just want to confirm, German references are not allowed on English Wikipedia, is this correct please? Thank you once again for all your hard work.Celestinesucess (talk) 14:04, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
Celestinesucess: No, that is not correct. You can link to sources in any language. I always specify the language in question by adding language=German to the items in the template. For example: Of course, if there are good sources in English, it's always useful to include them.--Ipigott (talk) 14:29, 26 September 2019 (UTC)

Hi, do you have a link to the home page of the contest? I'll advertise it at the top of the Challenge pages. Is there any prizes for it? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:52, 26 September 2019 (UTC)

 • Wikipedia:Women in Red 2019 stub contest which is easier to remember. Annie MacDonald Langstaff

Would really appreciate it if you could give this one a copy edit. Also unsure, but probably the grammar police will want it to be in British English? SusunW (talk) 19:05, 26 September 2019 (UTC)

SusunW: Another interesting article, especially for me as I spent five years in Quebec in my twenties. You seem to be producing them more and more frequently. Two of the photographs seem very dark. Perhaps Adam Cuerden could help to improve them. Canadians do not use British English but speak a variety which is in fact very close to American English. I wouldn't be surprised if someone comes along and wants to change all the dates.--Ipigott (talk) 12:05, 27 September 2019 (UTC)
I stumbled across her and so wanted to tell her that her husband was living in New York, as a naturalized American with a wife and other daughter. I have no idea how to make the photos lighter, so if someone can help, that would be great. I was very happy to have found them at all. There is a profile photo of Jacobs that is clearer, but no idea when it was made or who made it and no information on publishing. The judge who denied her request, Saint Pierre, is fascinating as well. He served in the Northern Army of the U.S. Civil War before returning home to Quebec and becoming a judge. Maybe someone will write his article, now that there is a photo of him. SusunW (talk) 13:11, 27 September 2019 (UTC)

Women in Red

Hello and thank you for your warm welcome to this group. I am amazed by your experience and background in Wikipedia.129.63.233.71 (talk) 20:50, 11 October 2019 (UTC)Artful inquiry

Hello user:IpigottThank you for the warm welcome and sugesstion. I would definitely go through the link. Meanwhile, Harriet Bruce-Annan has been tagged to be an orphan. Is it ok to change this by adding her name to the List_of_recipients_of_the_Order_of_Merit_of_the_Federal_Republic_of_Germany under the Other Grand Crosses Special Class section? Thanks.--Mwintirew (talk) 20:57, 27 September 2019 (UTC)

Mwintirew: Yes, you should certainly do that. I've also added her to the List of Ghanaians. All the names of the women from Ghana you cover in biographies should be added to that list.--Ipigott (talk) 06:16, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
(
List of Americans redirects to Lists of Americans. There's a listing at Category:Lists of people by nationality, though a lot of those are lists of people who have a further distinguishing property (regional origin, occupation, etc). I'd have thought that categories did the job better in all these cases. No clear definition of who gets listed, but if you look at the "politicians" section of List of English people it's obviously either very selective (by whom, on what criteria?) or very incomplete. I wonder what the page views are of these kind of pages, and what the point of them is. If they are anything useful should we be encouraging all WiR editors to add all their biog creations to the appropriate nationality list? Or are they something a bit like the much-discussed portals, a hierarchy established and not maintained and best left alone? Interesting. PamD
14:38, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Belgians is interesting and relevant (though 13 years old). PamD 14:42, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
And the 2013 Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of French people too. PamD 14:45, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
A friendly FYI, I also added her to Harriet (name) and Bruce (surname). --Rosiestep (talk) 15:29, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
PamD: I'm glad to see you have finally discovered these. You'll find them all under Lists of people by nationality. Some of the lists from the larger countries would indeed be better broken down into lists by occupation, etc., but in general I find it useful to have all these basic country-based lists. For smaller countries like Ghana, they are particularly useful as not everyone who consults Wikipedia is familiar with our category system. I see, for example, the List of Danes gets over 1,000 page views a month whereas List of Danish women writers gets only about 80. You'll no doubt be surprised to discover that List of Ghanaians has been viewed over 1,700 times over the past month. So let's keep these and try to maintain them with minimal information on the names listed, such as dates of birth and death and main occupation or area of expertise or involvement. This is what I try to include when I add names to such lists.--Ipigott (talk) 16:14, 28 September 2019 (UTC)

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:

 • Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
 • Diversity winner
 • Gender-gap fillers

Nino Tkeshelashvili

If you get a chance, can you look this one over? There seems to be a whole group of Georgian feminists in her era that we have little coverage on and she was one of the earliest. As always, appreciate your help. SusunW (talk) 23:53, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

You have really done a great job of unearthing information about this early Georgian feminist. You must be becoming quite an expert in Kartuli. Strange so little has been written about her in English. I see we have short articles on Barbare Jorjadze, Mariam Jambakur-Orbeliani, a stub on Ekaterine Gabashvili, but nothing yet on Kato Mikeladze. Not sure whether Anastasia Tumanishvili-Tsereteli was a feminist but she is characterized as such in the Spanish version. The Georgian version has articles on Babilina Khositashvili and Ekaterine Melikishvili. I see Gabashvili and A. Tumanishvili-Tseretlisa also appear in the photo at [2]. Perhaps some of the others there were also feminists. Marijani seems to be an important Georgian poet and children's writer. There is an article about her in Georgian.--Ipigott (talk) 13:43, 2 October 2019 (UTC) SusunW: Forgot to ping you.--Ipigott (talk) 14:09, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
Actually, Kartuli caused me to find another translator, as I wasn't satisfied with Google. This worked really well and combined with Google made the texts fairly easy to understand. I am not yet at the place where I recognize what any of the characters, much less words, are, but it will come, I am sure. I knew nothing of the history of Georgian feminism, so found this fascinating and am happy to have discovered a whole new area where the study of women's history is thriving. The article is kind of short for GA, but I think I will nominate it anyway to add diversity to our suffrage focus goal on WIG. We are really making headway at reaching 40 nominations. Yesterday, I jumped back and forth between Poland and the Czech Republic as both Joteyko and Wiedermannová-Motyčková got picked up for review and passed. In the process, I found a Czech speaker, which is a big plus for helping with the noun conjugations. As always, thank you so much for reviewing Tkeshelashvili. I found some pretty decent photos for the article as well. I added the writers group to 1day1woman page, since we are finished with the writers editathon, but there are lots of redlinks in it that Rosiestep may be interested in. I'm going to work on Olga Guramishvili-Nikoladze who was a biologist and teacher. Fits in with our scientists. Haven't forgotten about the Inter-Allied Women's Conference, but have a friend coming in from Japan tomorrow, so am pretty busy off Wiki today. SusunW (talk) 21:11, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
Great article about Nino. Thanks for that, Susun. And enjoy your time with your friend! BTW, of the redlinks which didn't have a Wikidata item, they do now, so they'll show up on redlists! In the meantime, you'll mostly find me working on the "Women Writers in Review" project for Northeastern University (at Wikidata). --Rosiestep (talk) 22:13, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

looking for a Danish speaker

Hello Ipigott, wondering if you would be able to answer a question about Danish language/culture at the Reference Desk: Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Language#‘Apple_bobbing’_in_Danish. Apple bobbing may be useful background. Many thanks, 70.67.193.176 (talk) 20:55, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

I don't know what Apple bobbing is in English.--Ipigott (talk) 22:11, 6 October 2019 (UTC)
Not to worry! The volunteers suspected the custom might not be known in Dannemark. Thank you for repkly, 70.67.193.176 (talk) 14:32, 7 October 2019 (UTC)
 • OK. If anyone is still interested, I've finally found the time to look into it. The Danish translation is "Æbledykning" which literally means apple diving. See [3]. The same term is used for cleaning/rincing apples if there is a danger of infection or pollution.--Ipigott (talk) 14:49, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Valentine Thomson

Here's what I have so far on Thomson. All the remaining sources are in French, but I put all the links I have at the top. If you are able to work on her, I will move on and try to put something together for Ruth Atkinson. SusunW (talk) 22:43, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

I see we got our wires crossed and you created a stub on Thomson. I guess the easiest thing is for me to just paste my information into yours, but I am still not sure what to do about the French sources I collected but cannot read. I finished Ruth Atkinson (activist) today. SusunW (talk) 19:54, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
SusunW: I'm really sorry about the confusion. After seeing you had nominated Inter-Allied, I thought it was important to make a start on the red links. With your additions, the article is coming on very well. Now I'll try to incorporate more details from the French sources although it looks to me as if you already have the essentials. There are further details of her publications in French and English here but most seem to be listed under the authority control links. Maybe you could make a start on Graziella. I've haven't been able to find very much about her except that she seems to have been involved in the Milano Lyceum, that she is listed as both secretary and philanthropist in a number of sources (probably in connection with the Unione) and that she resigned from the Unione in 1938 for "family reasons". I haven't been able to find any information on her since 1938 except that as a Jew she went to Switzerland. Let me know if you find any Italian sources on her you would like me to work on.--Ipigott (talk) 08:00, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
Truly, not a problem, as long as we have the article, who creates it is unimportant to me. I have found no sources other than the one I used in the Inter-Allied article on Graziella. I tried searching Sonnino and Carpi and come up with nothing at all. What you told me here is more than I knew, so I probably can't write an article on her. Sorry. SusunW (talk) 13:20, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
As it's my wife's birthday today, I'll leave Graziella until tomorrow. I found about a dozen sources which mention her briefly but they are nearly all "snippets", making it difficult to find the context. After I start the article, you may be able to pick some of them up and investigate further. I see Cassianto is interested in reviewing Inter-Allied. He seems to have worked on quite a few FA and FL articles, including Marie Lloyd and Hattie Jacques. Looks as if he might come up with some interesting suggestions.--Ipigott (talk) 14:18, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
I hope you all have a wonderful celebration. I don't know Cassianto, so I'll be making a new acquaintance. I might be able to make a tiny stub on Eugénie Beeckmans with enough info to make it survive AfD. There are other sources, but not accessible to me. From this[4], [5], and [6] I get her trade union overview and two awards. Though I can find no birth/death information on her. Some sources give her as Eugénie-Jeanne Beeckmans but she is not the medical doctor Jeanne Beeckman (1891-1963). SusunW (talk) 14:55, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
Okay, I've done what I could with Beeckmans. There is quite a bit more information in Chabot, which I listed in further reading, but of course, without French, I have no clue what it says. Perhaps you or Charles01 can glean something to add. SusunW (talk) 17:00, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

Can you please help submitting the article for review

Hello! I'm taking part in the three-month stub contest and yesterday finished my first article ever. And now i don't know how to submit it for revision to the contest. Can you please help me? I'm new here and i don't know what to do next. I see the button - submit for review - but how do I know it will be submitted to your project? Thank you in advance. Sorry if i'm writing all over the place, cause i've already written on the contest talk page as well. ;) really excited to hear you feedback. Less Unless (talk) 08:25, 12 October 2019 (UTC)

You've done a good job on your first article with lots of good sources, Less Unless. If you want to submit it to the stub contest, you'll have to add it yourself, following the instructions. The next time you create an article in your user space, call it user:Less Unless/name of article. It will then be easier to move and you can create more than one article at the same time, Just drop me a line if you run into difficulties or need further assistance.--Ipigott (talk) 09:35, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
Thank you so much! I enjoy the research part) I will add it to the contest. Thank you for your help! --Less Unless (talk) 09:43, 12 October 2019 (UTC)

Rollback Anonymous Edits on Mavis Owureku-Asare

Hi Ipigott, An anonymous editor with ip 41.210.31.232 , which I assume is the subject of this article,Mavis Owureku-Asare made some changes to this article which I want to rollback but cannot, can you help please? The changes made to the article doesn't make it sound encyclopaedic but promotional.

Celestinesucess: As you noticed, I removed most of the promotional edits. When I suspect biographies I have created have been edited by the subject of the article or a close companion, I often send them an email explaining the problem. I invite them to keep me informed of any inaccuracies or important details which are missing from the article. On this basis, I frequently receive useful suggestions for improvements by email. You can of course also ask for specific information (e.g. date of birth) or or a photograph (explaining how to upload it to Commons).--Ipigott (talk) 10:02, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
Ipigott, thank you very much for corrections and suggestions. I will take your suggestions into consideration --Celestinesucess (talk) 10:55, 17 October 2019 (UTC)

Thung Sin Nio

If you have the inclination, will you give this one a once-over? I am having a horrible time trying to find any usable images. *sigh* But, it was quite fascinating to learn about the differences in the suffrage movement between the Netherlands and its colonies. SusunW (talk) 19:55, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

Amazing woman! You've made really rapid progress on this one. Any chance of a better photograph?--Ipigott (talk) 10:33, 22 October 2019 (UTC)
Though there is a collection in her papers in Atria, all seem to be just informal snapshots taken in the 1930s, most are pretty blurry and I doubt any of them were "published" before they were posted at Atria. Literally, IMO, this was the best of the lot. I scoured the Dutch newspapers, which is how I cleared up the discrepancies in her 1928-1931 period, but found no photographs either in the Netherlands or the Dutch East Indies. I also opted not to call her Betsy. None of the historical sources call her that and as she left Indonesia because she refused to change her name, I kind of doubt she would be happy that a nickname is now being used to refer to her. I could not find any sources at all before the modern era that refer to her as Betsy, so using "common name", I opted for her real name. SusunW (talk) 14:55, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

Joining the stub contest

I would like to join the stub contest for Women in Red, I am new, how do I do that?Toandael49 (talk) 14:56, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

Toandanel49: Here's how to participate:
Go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Meetup/140
Edit the section on "Participants" and add four tildes at the bottom of the list.
If you want to add a new stub (or longer article) you have created, edit the section on "Newly-created stubs which meet contest rules: October" following the instructions (i.e. country article title new stub by ~~~~, the four tildes representing user name and date created).
Let me know if you run into problems or need further assistance.--Ipigott (talk) 15:27, 22 October 2019 (UTC)
I added the four tildes and I check that my name was added , but it is not in the right place, could you see what went wrong?Toandael49 (talk) 16:06, 22 October 2019 (UTC)
Toandanel49: You added your edit below the column divider tag but someone fixed it -- so you're now listed correctly in the list of participants. If you wish, you can now go ahead and add an article.--Ipigott (talk) 07:06, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Józefa Joteyko

On 23 October 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Józefa Joteyko, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Józefa Joteyko believed that wages should be based upon scientific research and the amount of effort required to do a job, rather than arbitrary factors like gender? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Józefa Joteyko. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Józefa Joteyko), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

I've gone and nominated your article on Sara Wesslin for DYK :) Thanks you for creating the article! -Yupik (talk) 10:26, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Thanks, I have just been alterted on this. Still no photo? Perhaps she can provide one?--Ipigott (talk) 10:28, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Women in Red

Hi Ipigott, Kindly help review this article, Draft:Nana Aba Anamoah. Thank You! Mwintirew (talk) 10:41, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Mwintirew: The article is very brief at the moment and may not yet be considered sufficiently notable. I see there are lots of other press articles about her. You could use them as a basis for expansion.--Ipigott (talk) 11:02, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Graziella_Sonnino

I expanded your stub on sonnino, is it start class? Toandael49 (talk) 10:29, 24 October 2019 (UTC)
Toandanel49: Thanks! Yes, it's certainly start class now.--Ipigott (talk) 10:33, 24 October 2019 (UTC)
please help with my name, Toandanel49, apparently it is not linked, what is wrong with it?Toandanel49 18:19, 24 October 2019 (UTC)
Toandanel49: You have registered on Wikipedia as Toandanel49. If you want to change it, complete the form at GlobalRenameRequest.--Ipigott (talk) 18:48, 24 October 2019 (UTC)
The problem with my name being unlinked was I had turned on a wikitext option under my signature, I unchecked it in preference and it was fix. another editor (I think he is a teenager from Sweden) told me how to do it. Now all of my contributions have turned pink (light red?) which I think means a potential problem. Toandanel49 (talk) 01:05, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
Toandanel49: I can't see any problem. All your recent edits are OK.--Ipigott (talk) 06:54, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

Clarice Phelps

Hi Ipigott, I wanted to write an article about Clarice Phelps, but there seems to be an article about her on Simple Wikipedia,https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarice_Phelps I'm not sure what that is. But there is no article about her on English Wikipedia itself. What do you suggest about this please? Celestinesucess (talk) 08:43, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Celestinesucess: Strange you should be asking that now as I have just been reading Claire Jarvis's article from April: What a Deleted Profile Tells Us About Wikipedia’s Diversity Problem. As a result of the earlier deletion, quite a bit of additional information has emerged about Phelps and I think it would be a good idea to try to re-create a biography on the EN Wikipedia. But I suggest you should do your own research rather than just build on the Simple English version. I'll also bring this up on the WiR talk page and see what people have to say about it there.--Ipigott (talk) 10:46, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
I'm already seeing from the comments on WiR talk page, that someone has actually started working on a draft about her. Thank you for all your efforts and thanks for sharing a link to the blog post Celestinesucess (talk) 14:34, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
There's a long, long history behind the draft and all the earlier deletions. But now, with the more recent developments on Phelps, it really seems as if she deserves an article. You should read the various links. Let's wait for a day or two and see what comes out of the discussion on the talk page.--Ipigott (talk) 14:56, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
 • For the time being, this doesn't seem to be going too well. Please look at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Women_in_Red#Clarice_Phelps. Maybe over the next few days there will be more reactions but for now I think you should spend your time on developing biographies on other women. Too bad. I also think she deserves a good biography in her own right.--Ipigott (talk) 20:37, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
Thank you so much Ipigott, will think of writing about someone else then. But I'm sorry to bother you again. Please there is also the case of Asnath Mahapa, I can't find an article about her on EN Wikipedia but there is an article about her on EN Everybody wiki, https://en.everybodywiki.com/Asnath_Mahapa was her article also deleted? Celestinesucess (talk) 06:14, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
The Everybodywiki page was copied from Draft:Asnath Mahapa. As far as I can see, the draft was deleted simply because it had been hanging around for too long without being moved to mainspace. That means you are free to start a new article. As South Africa's first female pilot, I think she certainly deserves an article. If I were you, I would avoid copying from the Everybody page. Check the secondary sources and start an article in the way you usually do. I see she is mentioned in Timeline of women in aviation and in Women in aviation. Hope this one works out without any further problems.--Ipigott (talk) 07:40, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
It does help, thank you. Celestinesucess (talk) 04:45, 29 October 2019 (UTC)

icons for WIR

Hi Ipigott! I just wanted to say that I'm sorry I wasn't able to get the icons done. Thanks for understanding. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 23:19, 29 October 2019 (UTC)

Rosika Schwimmer

Major piece of work. If you have the time and inclination, it could do with a copy edit. Thank you! SusunW (talk) 00:40, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Thank you so much. When we first started this year on suffrage I picked her and Aletta Jacobs as two poorly written articles that needed attention. I am so glad to have been able to work both of them up to GA status with your help. SusunW (talk) 16:41, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
SusunW As usual, you've done a wonderful job on this one. I think the only remaining problem is that it is not clear that Ford was on the ship to Sweden from the start. I also wondered whether any Jewish organizations had commented on the citizenship issue - but you don't need to spend more time on it. In connection with suffragists, I started re-creating the deleted article on Alma Sundquist. I think it could be considerably expanded but am bogged down with all kinds of other things at the moment. I always find it very frustrating when hundreds of women's biographies are deleted without trace - but I suppose rules are rules.--Ipigott (talk) 16:57, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
Making it evident that Ford was on the ship is an easy fix. I can try to find out about the Jewish organizations, but the negative press was truly horrific. I could hardly find any neutral articles about her from 1921 in the press. I will be happy to work on Sundquist. We still need I think 3 suffragists to meet our 20 article goal for Women in Green. SusunW (talk) 17:12, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
Don't bother with Sundquist unless you think she's really worthwhile. There seems to be lots of material to draw on if you want to expand the article. As for Swimmer, many more with communist connections suffered under McCarthyism. And now we seem to be entering a new era of "unwanted immigrants".--Ipigott (talk) 17:23, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
Sad commentary on the human race, indeed. Hers was a hard article to write and not be effected by the bigotry that surrounded her. SusunW (talk) 17:43, 30 October 2019 (UTC)
I think I have done everything I can do on Sundquist, if you want to give it a look-over. I was a bit confused about the whole "proxy" doctor thing Nilsson talks about here, I assumed it meant women could serve as supervisors if there were no men available for the post, but that might need adjusting if I am wrong. I also found this lovely, photo [7], which I think would meet the PD requirements, as it was clearly "taken by unknown Swedish photographers before 1949". SusunW (talk) 21:17, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
SusunW: You've certainly covered her in great detail. Thanks for your efforts and the photo. I think you've interpreted the proxy thing correctly.--Ipigott (talk) 07:47, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
I just found proof that the image was published in the US in 1919, so we are definitely good to go to upload it. I' doing that now. If you want to look for other appropriate photos, we can nominate it and then will only need 2 more suffragists to meet this year's goal. :) SusunW (talk) 15:55, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for prod Ian

Thanks for the prod re Aisha Ayensu Ian. I'm a bit confused as to how you de-stub - as 1,000 characters well referenced is pretty much a "start" IMO. Might be useful to add a line above the de-stubbing list to explain what is required of a de-stubbed article. I will move Aisha Ayensu obviously. Well done for the mass messaging - it was tweeted yesterday. Went to the 31st editathon in Edinburgh for WiR yesterday! cheers Roger aka Victuallers (talk) 12:05, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

Sorry about that. I actually deleted my post a moment later as I saw the "official" running text count was at 1361 B or 222 words which is certainly enough for a stub but not enough for a destub. If you reformat the awards section into running text, it will certainly count as a destub. I tend to agree with you about the start status of articles but in the discussions about the stub contest, several editors were insistent that we should base stubs on at least 1000 B of "running text" (i.e. excluding lists, boxes, headings and sources). ORES does not base assessments on running text which leads to a lot of confusion. Thanks for your enthusiastic participation in the contest. Hope you will also participate in November.--Ipigott (talk) 12:26, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

Contest progress

Looks like you're doing a great job of running this Ipigott, are you really manally checking all of the entries for it? That's a lot of work! @Rosiestep: Victuallers as well. Why not put up a bank of fresh red links directly at the top of the contest page for people to start? I may tackle a few over the next few weeks and would be more likely to contribute from a shortlist like that. Put up a batch of 25 missing articles at a time and a few ones you wanted expanded etc. Sound good?♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:32, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

Dr. Blofeld: Thanks for your kind assessment. I really appreciate it when it comes from a contest expert like you. Yes, I've been trying to keep a check on everything that's going on and am pleased to see that virtually all the participants have understood the rules. It would no doubt be a good idea to include redlinks/stubs for expansion each month but it looks to me as if those competing find enough to deal with from the other priorities we are addressing or simply by working on one of their favourite occupations. I think I've been spending enough time on the contests and intend to continue devoting some of my time to creating new articles and assisting other editors. I tried to design the contest so that it would more or less take care of itself but it still needs quite a bit of monitoring (less so in November though).--Ipigott (talk) 16:11, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

If the red links are directly visible I'd be more likely to blue link them though.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:18, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

I'll see if I can devote some time to it tomorrow or later in the week but I just don't have time now and am behind schedule on other priorities.--Ipigott (talk) 16:23, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
Dr. Blofeld, unfortunately, I can't take credit for much, except for the idea itself: "let's make a push to write stubs at the end of the year, as we've never focused on that before". Ian gets the credit for organizing the idea into a contest, and assuring it's running smoothly. That is certainly a lot of work, so thank you, Ian. The results to date are wonderful: a lot of participants, a lot of stubs, and a lot of stubs being destubbed. If there were monetary prizes, like the one you facilitated a couple of years ago, there would be even more activity, but this is very good for $0. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:06, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
Rosiestep: It would indeed help if we had real prizes, even t-shirts or badges, but I think many Wikipedians are just as happy to gain "virtual" recognition for participation. I'm also happy with the way things are progressing, especially for WiR targets, although there has not been very much interest in destubbing. Have you noticed how many of the "stubs" have progressed to Start class or beyond? I'm also happy to see we've attracted quite a few editors to become members of WiR.--Ipigott (talk) 17:23, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
I could ask WMUK for a £250 prize for most UK women bios destubbed or something, but if you're happy keeping it prizeless and seeing what you can get for it that would be fine.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:41, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
Dr. Blofeld: Thanks for the kind offer but now we've started "virtually", it would probably be best to continue along the same lines. I've followed up on your suggestion of suggesting names by listing a few of the stubs created in October as candidates for destubbing in November -- also linked from the contest page. There doesn't seem to be any reason to do the same for the creation of stubs.--Ipigott (talk) 18:19, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

Mpumi Madisa Contested for Deletion

Hello Ipigott, an article I just created, Mpumi Madisa has been tagged for deletion. Can you please review it for me? Thank you in advance. Celestinesucess (talk) 06:54, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

Seems perfectly OK to me.--Ipigott (talk) 18:20, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

Pamela Pigeon

Kia ora and thanks for helping with the Pamela Pigeon stub, which is apparently more than a stub. And many thanks for the offer of help. I sent some messages to Rosie on the Wiki Women in Red Messenger site, but she was traveling, so I still wondering about the issues I raised there. Perhaps you could look at the Esther Frumkin and Ann B. Ross pages?

The page that really bugs me is Ann B. Ross. Someone who seems to be interested primarily in French laws on pornography seems to think that my work on Ross is too much like fan mail from some flounder. I don't want to engage with the critic, especially since explaining how wrong he (presumably) is is just plain stupid. But I've published refereed material about women's romance novels (and Ross isn't a romance author), so I understand male 'tude about women writers and readers.

OK, not being able to stop myself, I just tried to provide some cred about my knowledge and my writing skills. But I don't yet grasp the Byzantine back pages of Wikipedia practice. Apparently I don't need to submit my initial efforts at establishing a new page anymore? (I've got more than 250 edits, although I consider myself little more than a newbie.) I wouldn't even know how to take advantage of that. And when someone comes along and pastes a note about problems with pages I've worked on I could just serenely remove those boxes at the top of a page, or ignore/remove an edit/comment that's wrong?

Frumkin is controversial but very interesting. The problem is that I came into the picture after the page was up and I stuck with the citation system in use. That then got pinged for not being clear enough about sources. However, on other pages, when I've used academic style citation (think MLA), that's also been pinged, or rather, just plain rewritten from quotation to re-voicing. Actually, the problem is that, depending on how I've begun a page, or how someone else has begun a page I'm working on, the templates for citation seem to vary significantly. And I don't know how to work my way through the differences.

And could you clarify when direct quotation is acceptable? I firmly believe in honoring a source's voice and actual words rather than always rephrasing in my own words, especially when the source is, say, an expert on the subject in question.

Sorry for going on--and I could keep going on--but I keep seeing contradictory indications of what is and isn't acceptable, so I'm confused. Thanks again. Tarkiwi25 (talk) 07:02, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Tarkiwi25: Thanks for telling me about your difficulties. I'll try to answer them one by one. First of all, I can't find any trace of the messages you sent to Rosie. The best place for them would be on her own talk page or on the WiR talk page where others would have the opportunity to respond too.
I've looked at Ann B. Ross and was rather surprised that an editor as experienced as ReaderofthePack had added so many tags. I think the main reason is probably the fact that you had first covered her books and only later her life. Our biographies usually start with a section on "Early life and education" and then describe the person's career. Discussion of works then usually follows. In this connection, see our Ten Simple Rules. I've now moved the Life section to the top which makes it look more like other biographies.
On Esther Frumkin I agree with the need for inline references. Ideally, each fact in an article should be followed by an appropriate reference but there should at least be one reference per paragraph, preferably at the end. You have obviously carefully researched the background. All you need to do now is to add references where they apply. Let me know if you run into any difficulties.
You certainly do not need to submit draft articles for review. I would recommend you add (or move) them directly to article space yourself, once you are satisfied they are acceptable.
Direct quotes are useful and acceptable but need to be fully referenced. For longer quotes, you should begin the passage with <blockquote> and finish it with </blockquote>.
Hope all this helps. Just let me know if you need further assistance. I realize it can be frustrating to have to cope with criticisms from other editors but in most cases they are made in good faith. As you gain experience, you should be able to cope with them yourself. You are obviously just the kind of contributor we need to improve the encylopaedia's coverage of women authors and their works. So please just be patient and continue writing the same kind of detailed articles. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 10:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Copyright attribution 07-NOV-2019

Hello! I had noticed that in an earlier talk page discussion you mentioned receiving emailed suggestions from editors you've contacted who have conflicts of interest with regards to editing certain articles. I was wondering, of the suggestions that you approve of and implement, do you provide copyright attribution to the editor who suggested them in the edit summary? I always thought this was mandatory, but wasn't sure. I answer a lot of edit requests and wanted to confirm I'm doing them correctly. Thanks for any info you can offer! Regards,  Spintendo  00:26, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

Spintendo: I think this must be a misunderstanding. I can't recall ever having received specific requests for editing. In some cases news items or similar are brought to my attention. If I use them to develop articles, I then reference them in the normal way. In cases of conflict of interest, editors sometimes ask me to move their drafts to mainspace but their edit summaries remain intact. Hope this helps.--Ipigott (talk) 07:32, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

Marie Lang

I've wanted to write her for a long time, so finally got it done. I need your help with this source She is the last entry on p 793 and continuing to 794. The problem is the abbreviations, which don't translate and which I have no clue what they stand for. I think there is a section before her first marriage that talks about her education, maybe she was schooled at home which was typical?, but it also mentions gymnasium, so I am unsure. It could do with an overall copyedit and though I found one usable photograph, others on common will require more research, as the tags appear to be incorrect and do not have US rationale. If you don't have time, not to worry, my entire week next week will be tied up with my 1 year anniversary doctor's reviews. SusunW (talk) 00:25, 10 November 2019 (UTC)

SusunW: She was educated at home by a high school (Gymnasium) teacher. I'll look through the article either this evening or tomorrow.--Ipigott (talk) 17:40, 10 November 2019 (UTC)
Thanks. I'm trying to work on the photos, but it is really, really hard. SusunW (talk) 17:44, 10 November 2019 (UTC)
SusunW: I was just checking it through again and was glad to see you had corrected a few of my typos. The image of Dokumente der Frauen is actually a reminder stating "Your subscription has run out". Maybe you could find another cover? Or perhaps this 1911 photo of Allgemeiner Österreichischer Frauenverein.--Ipigott (talk) 17:04, 11 November 2019 (UTC)
We all make them, it does take a village :). That's really funny, as it is the front cover of the magazine and one of the few where some part, date, title, etc. were not cropped out by filming. It actually appears that was the most frequently used cover, from what I can see. That's a great image. Let me see if I can find any proof of publishing. Since it is tied to a demonstration on a specific day, that should be easier than having to look at over 1,800 articles written by/about Marie Lang in Austrian newspapers/journals. SusunW (talk) 17:16, 11 November 2019 (UTC)
Haven't got to that date yet (have to page through) but this may be a suffrage march? [8] SusunW (talk) 17:35, 11 November 2019 (UTC)
Have looked at every paper between 1910 and 1912 and the image above and this one are the only two I can come up with. Weird? Anyway, if you can confirm the 1910 one above was a suffrage march in Austria, I'll gladly load it. SusunW (talk) 18:02, 11 November 2019 (UTC)
Oh, and one other thing, what is Wiener Privatbesitz. Oh I get what it translates to, but it seemed it must refer to a place as it is covered by the monuments department. SusunW (talk) 18:50, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

SusunW: It is definitely a suffrage march: Frauenwahlrecht means women's right to vote.--Ipigott (talk) 12:08, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

SusunW: Wiener Privatbesitz means Viennese Private Collection.--Ipigott (talk) 12:20, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

 • Here's a good source for images of the Frauenwahlrecht demontration on 19 March 1911. Ourr picture apparently comes from Foundation (Stifftung) Bruno Kreisky Archive (StBKA) -- see here.--Ipigott (talk) 13:03, 12 November 2019 (UTC)
Perfect! I found it from your additional information. Was in 1913, not in 1911 as the original article said. here. SusunW (talk) 15:07, 12 November 2019 (UTC)
SusunW: Now you've tidied it up, it looks like another candidate for GA.--Ipigott (talk) 15:55, 14 November 2019 (UTC)

Thanks + question

Thanks for your kind note and advice! I’d like to start creating stubs for notable female Rhodes Scholars; it is a spot where there’s a pretty disparity. The male alumni aren’t really more notable, but they have Wikipedia entries. What’s the best path to start stubs? Am I too new to Wikipedia to get them approved? Thanks for any advice you can offer! A112484011388 (talk) 13:29, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

A112484011388: Thanks for letting me know about your interesting idea. I do not think you are too new to create articles but it might be best to start drafting in your user space. You can do this by using of person. I suppose you are aware of the Rhodes Scholar Database. Keep me informed of progress on your first article and I'll try to help you along. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 13:48, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

Milagros Benet de Mewton

If you have a chance can you review this one? Thank you. SusunW (talk) 17:47, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

SusunW: Very little to do on this one. Why the space between U. and S. for U.S.? It's now U.S. throughout which I think is correct. The article was a useful lesson for me on the history of Puerto Rico.--Ipigott (talk) 19:50, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
It's just the way I typically write it, no real reason. Thank you for reviewing it. And yes, eye-opening for me too and I realized that the suffrage in the US article doesn't address either Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands, which were the only territories at the time of the 19th amendment. So...I'm updating that doc now. SusunW (talk) 20:02, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

Esther Duflo

I saw Esther Duflo on the news today (though the segment is from last week, I’m just getting to it). It sparked my interest. I think we are gonna be hearing more from her in the next year. I know practically nothing about economics—sadly!—but what is needed to help bring this article to Good calibre? Trillfendi (talk) 20:39, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Trillfendi: It looks to me as if the article is progressing quite well. More detail could certainly be gleaned from her substantial press coverage, both in English and French. Is there any particular aspect you think requires attention.--Ipigott (talk) 08:02, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

I have unreviewed a page you curated

Hi, I'm Barkeep49. I wanted to let you know that I saw the page you reviewed, Mpumi Madisa, and have marked it as unpatrolled. If you have any questions, please ask them on my talk page. Thank you.

Barkeep49 (talk) 16:54, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

This was truly no comment on you. We discovered another reviewer had been doing paid editing and so I am going through and unreviewing any articles that have potential for paid editing. I have re-reviewed it as you obviously had marked it as reviewed after the other editor. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 17:03, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

A question about photos for bios

Hello, you said to reach out to you if I had questions, and now I have one about photos. I have been working my way through the latest

talk
) 00:50, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

Oulfis: Thanks for contacting me. I'm afraid when creating biographies of living people. it's often difficult to find photographs which are free of copyright. Fair use photos can be used on the English Wikipedia itself (not Commons) for photos of people who are no longer living but not for BLPs (biographies of living people). In some cases, you can find photos with acceptable Creative Commons values by searching the various sites here, especially Flickr, but there don't seem to be any for Judith Bakirya. One thing you can do is to include this
BBC summary under "External links", explaining it contains a photo. You could even write to Bakirya, asking whether she could provide a photo for Wikipedia Commons, perhaps inviting her to upload it herself. Last but not least, you could include a request for a photo on the article's talk page. Hope all this helps. You seem to be making good progress with the article. Thanks also for the other six biographies you have created over the past couple of weeks.
As for notability, I would agree with you that their inclusion in the BBC 100 list should be sufficient. Unfortunately, not everyone agrees. We have had a number of cases in which editors have voted in favour of article deletion on the grounds of insufficient secondary sources or because they think one event does not justify inclusion. I hope yours will continue to be OK.--Ipigott (talk) 07:54, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

Herabai Tata

When I started this one, I was totally shocked that we have no article on

Women's suffrage in India. Because I found myself writing paragraphs to explain what was going on in the suffrage movement, I've started that article as well and am hoping to finish it for Asia month. If you get the chance, can you peruse Tata? Working on 2 articles at the same time was a wee bit distracting, but I also did not see the point of having to rehash sources I was already reviewing. If you do not have the time with setting up stuff for next month, I totally understand. Thanks! SusunW (talk
) 20:22, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

Okay I have now finished the suffrage article on India. Mammoth piece of work, but I think it fills a huge gap in our coverage on women. I am going to post it on WiR to see of others can help find photographs and/or integrate it, but if you are so inclined, please give it a copy edit. Obviously, I did not write it in British or Indian English, so if that needs to be addressed ... Thank you! and Happy Thanksgiving. SusunW (talk) 15:55, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
SusunW: I've been through Women's suffrage in India. Amazing amount of detail. Maybe it would be useful to include something on how suffrage has evolved until today although I can see we already have Women's political participation in India. It might be useful to include a word on how the caste system still seems to affect women more than men in effective voting rights. But I'll leave it up to you. In any case, there are lots of new red links on women deserving biographies. We seem to have quite a number of keen Indian contributors. Perhaps they can be encouraged to participate too.--Ipigott (talk) 11:15, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
Thank you so much Ian. I was hoping that some of those Indian contributors can help with names of the women ... (so many given as Mrs. X) and photos. We'll see :) a couple of people did link it to other articles, so it now isn't an orphan. Not sure how to update the timeline of suffrage. I think all the state dates that are known should be input but I am not sure about the 1947 date. While it was de facto, it wasn't legally effective until 1950. Thoughts? SusunW (talk) 15:18, 29 November 2019 (UTC)

Thanks

With your encouragement, I created my first page about a Woman in Red: Maria Petyt. It was fun to research and I've submitted it for publication. Do I need to do anything more? Also, there is a page on Wikipedia in French about this woman, but I don't know how to list that link under the Languages heading but I'm sure to figure that out. Thanks again for your welcome message! AMM Pittsburgh (talk) 22:28, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

AMM Pittsburgh: I must say you've done a pretty good job on the article. I've linked it to the other language versions by clicking on "Add links" below "Languages" in the left-hand column. A box comes up and you need to establish the language to which you want to link it (e.g. fr for French) and you then add the name of the French article on the line below. I look forward to many more biographies along the same lines.--Ipigott (talk) 08:41, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

A clarification from you

I am sorry for pinging you here even though you would be busy right now. But I thought to sort my confusion from you and I wanted to ask clarity from you whether articles with over 300 words created for the very first time in first attempt could be included under the section newly created stubs instead of adding under destubbing section in the WikiProject Women in Stub contest. I have added articles with more than 300 words with the intention of participating in the Asian Month/2019 contest. Is it only mandatory whether the old articles which are expanded to be included under destubbed section. Could you help me. Abishe (talk) 17:00, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

Hi Abishe. Yes, we decided that all articles created by the contestant can be included under new stubs, even if they are longer than necessary. Thank you for being such an enthusiastic participant.--Ipigott (talk) 06:57, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
I was not aware of the reply and sorry to not respond immediately. Thank you Ian for your acknowledgement and I will contribute to WIR for an unforeseen future. Abishe (talk) 15:19, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

Women in Red 2020- Central America

Hello! I'm Paparazzzi and I'm interested in working on one of the articles included on Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Missing articles by nationality/El Salvador. I noticed that this project states that: "In January 2020, we are concentrating on women from Central America." I'm not really familiar with this project, do I have to wait until January or can I start working right now? Thank you, and happy holidays! --Paparazzzi (talk) 04:18, 26 December 2019 (UTC)

Paparazzzi: By all means start now. We usually have a few relevant new articles before the first of the month.--Ipigott (talk) 07:29, 26 December 2019 (UTC)

The "Every-day" Award
Hi Ian, so thankful to see that stuff just magically happens on the Women in Red project. I finally figured out how to get a "Woman of the Day" picture to renew every day.... and this pic (I hope) will keep changing till at least the end of the month. Thank you. Victuallers (talk) 13:41, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, Roger, I see you have been moving Commons files to "dated" Women of the Day files. I agree that this looks like a good way to make them show up on the date intended but it may be a good idea to move them back later -- unless you think the same names should come up every year. Maybe they could also be used on our main WiR page (perhaps below the TOC) and on the WiR talk page in place of the Women edit image (if Rosie agrees). It seems to work fine on your own user page and it looks as if width could be pasted anywhere. I see these files were originally created for "social media". Will they also be displayed on Twitter, etc. on the same dates?--Ipigott (talk) 14:49, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
That sounds like a good idea (... "WiR talk page in place of the Women edit image" ...), Ian. Plus thanks for creating it ("Woman of the Day" picture to renew every day), Victuallers. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:21, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
Rosiestep: Done. Perhaps there should be a heading or a caption "Woman of the day" but I'm not sure how to place it correctly. Perhaps you can help?--Ipigott (talk) 09:16, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

The file currently looks like this: .

So I tried this but it didn't add the caption: .

Perhaps request assistance on the WiR talkpage? --Rosiestep (talk) 12:47, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Rosiestep: Managed to do it myself.--Ipigott (talk) 13:04, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the nice reception. The idea would be to keep the file name as Jan?? Woman of the Day.... not a great solution but the file would be about the Woman of the Day for Jan?? so its not a lie and the image tells you who its about. I wouldn't change the filename back as a) too much work b) use them next year at no effort and c) if we decide its someone else then the file can be over written (and prev version will be retained (See Jan22 in a mo)). It is quite a bit of work. At the moment there are ~700 banners with 2ish for every day. To make it work we need 1 a day to be in the same format so I plan to create 366 files with png format. I made six just now for Feb and its a bit of a faff. Victuallers (talk) 15:32, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
Roger, I think you're doing a great job with these so don't worry about moving anything back unless it becomes necessary. I see some of them only have minimal inputs from WiR members but I think it's fine to display them as women of significance on the talk page. Now once again I'm trying to encourage revival of deleted sock articles (see WiR talk page). This seems to be happening with increasing frequency.--Ipigott (talk) 15:38, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

I appreciate your willingness to list ypour name there as one of the active members. I really need your help and input. My efforts are in jeopardy of being reversed or diverted if I don't get some supportive input. could you please let me know if you are available to do so? I really appreciate it. please ping me when you reply. thanks. --Sm8900 (talk) 03:19, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

note re your comment

I saw your comment just now at the talk page for WikiProject Council. thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I simply don't understand the contentious atmosphere that has arisen there. I truly don't. for me the real problem is that everyone who are busy with WikiProjects are too busy to devote real time to WikiProject Council, and the people who are active at WP:COuncil are simply not interested in promoting it or getting WikiProjects to use it as a real resource. active wikiproject coordinators like yourself are the only ones who can make any real difference there at all. Please keep it up. we need to restore the page, to be an active and useful resource, that leading active editors at active WikiProjects will find it worthwhile to visit. thanks so much for your great comments! --Sm8900 (talk) 08:50, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

and yes, I agree with your idea to start a whole new page. and maybe a whole new project. yes, yes, and yes. and this time, let's build it ona foundation of actually reaching out to those who are working actively on major wikiprojects, actually responding to their needs, actually responding to their efforts and what they are working on, and actually setting up as a resource that they would actually want to use, rather than a single moribund page with no major conversation, that a small handful of editors continually seek to preserve in its existing form. I appreciate your ideas. thanks!!! --Sm8900 (talk) 08:56, 16 January 2020

note re idea

hi. I have a new idea for a new Wikipedia policy. in fact I am thinking this should be a sixth pillar. Here it is: "Wikipedia has a zero-tolerance policy for harassment of any individuals." what do you think? the last day or two has really opened my eyes in terms of the omissions and gaps here on that area. if you're interested, let me know, and I'll send you more details. thanks. --Sm8900 (talk) 14:17, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

Sm8900: In recent years, I have been pretty active on the harassment issue and am glad to say we have achieved significant progress. The difficulties you have recently experienced are tame compared to the repeated attacks many editors have received over an extended period, often resulting in their deciding to leave Wikipedia for ever. At the moment, I am not really interested in devoting further time to harassment but keep me informed of progress if you decide to go ahead.--Ipigott (talk) 14:23, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
oh, I'm going ahead alright. in fact, the answer you just gave me has greatly reinforced my desire to proceed. it's not solely due to my own experiences. what you said is the whole point. this entire experience has greatly revealed to me that wikipedia, has glaring omissions in this area. I am going to start working on a draft in my own user space forthwith. your own comment just now to me has greatly confirmed exactly what I suspected all along, since yesterday; that this is all just the tip of the iceberg, and that there are glaring omissions and offenses out there waiting to be addressed.
I will be pinging you soon to notify you once I've made some progress. i really look forward to your input. you have been great so far in directly tackling issues head-on. your input is going to be one major part of what enables me to proceed with this idea and to make some real progress. I will keep you posted. thanks. --Sm8900 (talk) 14:28, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
Sm8900: So that no doubt means you will no longer be trying to improve WP:Council. Pity. I thought you had some good ideas: list of participants, active wikiproject coordinators, improvements in presentation, need to bring in new participants, etc. You can no doubt list a few more.....--Ipigott (talk) 15:54, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
thanks so much!! I truly appreciate you asking me that. well, the truth is, i am planning to take a step back for some amount of time, at WP:Council. however it need not be for more than a few days. and anyway, we could also discuss this somewhere else entirely, if we want. the thing is, if i have support from a few active WikiProject coordinators like yourself, then that will give me the main thing that i need in order to move ahead. if we can put a few interested folks together, then that might be what we would need to get started.
by the way, such efforts, can take place anywhere; they could be at WikiProject Council, or somewhere else entirely. where we would discuss this would be entirely up to the group, or to other interested editors; we could open that for discussion as well. what do you think of that? should we get started? I can open a user page if you want to move ahead with this, and we can discuss ideas there. I am hoping to have at least two or three other people on this, including yourself. feel free to let me know. thanks. --Sm8900 (talk) 16:00, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

hi. did you see the latest comment, at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Council? take a look, all the way at the bottom of the page. it is a comment of about 3-4 paragraphs. it basically says the Council shouldn't be overly active or anything. unreal!! lol!! --Sm8900 (talk) 01:13, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

Sm8900: The comments contain some interesting ideas. See my reactions there.--Ipigott (talk) 10:44, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
hi. just want to let you know I added some new comments; here is a link. link to comments. I would appreciate any input you might have on that. --Sm8900 (talk) 01:27, 20 January 2020 (UTC)
hi., thanks for clicking “thanks “! . However, if you have a chance, I could also use some written support. If you get a chance, could you please write a reply there. It can be short; just one or two sentences would be totally great if you want. I appreciate it. Thanks!! Sm8900 (talk) 14:18, 20 January 2020 (UTC)

Ferreira de Carvalho

Should the article refer to her as Ferreira de Carvalho rather that de Carvalho? I didn't automatically move the article to mainspace because there were a few bits like that I wasn't sure of.. ☕ Antiqueight chatter 16:18, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

Antiqueight: Her family name is Rodrigues. I've changed the sort to "Rodrigues-Carvalho, Claudia", the style widely used for her publications, etc.--Ipigott (talk) 16:29, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
I knew I didn't know how Brazilian names worked. Thanks - that had me concerned! ☕ Antiqueight chatter 17:09, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome to Women In Red. I went to a wiki meetup and someone there suggested I join. The ten tips were useful. I hadn't seen that before. Pakoire (talk) 04:50, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

ideas page ready

Hi. as you requested, I have set up a draft page in my own user space with some of the ideas that we discussed. Could you please go there, and let me know what you think? Also, in the true spirit of Wikipedia, I invite you to edit it if you wish, or alternately, you can simply indicate any changes or edits that you'd like to see. I think I may have gone a bit over the best length, so I would like to edit it or shorten it if you think that would make ti more ffective. Please feel to let me know. thanks. the draft is at: User:Sm8900/item draft. thanks!! --Sm8900 (talk) 01:38, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

Sm8900: This appears to be a completely new approach rather than a basis for improving or adding more effective subpages to WP Council. I still think it would be useful for you to set out what you think are the shortcomings of the existing situation; that would provide a starting point for defining your goals. I'm not sure what the status of your new group would be. It could possibly be a task force of WP Council, or do you have other ideas? At this stage, although I am happy to help you along, I am not too keen to become involved in a new enterprise. I am far too busy with other priorities.--Ipigott (talk) 07:15, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
Hi Ian. thanks so much for your points above. you make some great points. by the way, my name is Steve. since I have your real name, we might as well do the introductions. nice to meet you!! I will also email you. thanks. anyway, to answer your highly relevant points above, I totally agree with you. yes, this is something totally new, and yes, maybe it's easier to attach this to WikiProject Council, in order to avoid setting up entirely new things, and instead use the existing resources there. I'd be glad to do that; however, to do so, I will definitely need your help. if I set up a whole new resource, that I seek to establish at WikiProject Council, then I will need a clear reason and a clear firm foundation for doing so. the only way that I will be able to do is if I have a clear core group of existing, highly-active WikiProject coordinators who are already on board with this, already see it as helpful and necessary,. and who are willing to help out and to be vocal.
I need those coordinators to actively participate right on day one, just to express their confirmation that they are going to be actively part of this, and they see it as relevant. otherwise the supporters of the status quo at wikiproject council will simply seek to discourage me. even though my goal is to help others and to build new helpful and relevant resources, they will try to depict this as simply an attempt to set up a whole new structure that we don't need. so any help would be appreciated.
further details:
Okay, so here is how we proceed. I plan to set up broad umbrella groups to encompass entire topical areas. so we would have one umbrella group for history, one for politics, one for the arts, one for science, one for pop culture and so on and so on. once we do that, then within those umbrella groups, we could have various working groups, based mainly on function, but also based on topical area. so we could have one working group within history for helping new editors, one for sharing methods for improving articles, one for exchanging info on running a WikiProject. or alternately, we could make it much simpler; we could have one working group for experienced coordinators on active wikiprojects, and then that working group would be to enable them to share ideas and methods on any topics that they see fit to share.
underneath the working groups, we could have task forces. these would be outgrowths of the working groups, based on what active editors wish to set up. if no one has any ideas for task forces, then they would not exist. it would only be based upon real ideas from active editors, who seek to actively work on them and be available to exchange ideas.
okay, so to do all this, i.e. in order to propose all this, and then act upon it, and then set up pages for this, I need the active, vocal support, from a group of experienced, established WikiProject coordinators, right at the outset, and available on a constant basis. If I go to WikiProject Council by myself, and try to propose this, yes, laugh at me. they will have themselves a good chortle over the idea that I could think I will set up resources to, ya know, help people, or get ideas exchanged, or move things ahead etc etc etc. in their minds, lack of activity is a good thing; they feel it indicates stability, and lack of problems. it doesn't occur to them that the fact that we have active WikiProjects out there, defining new goals, and moving ahead, means we should be an active resource for providing ideas and forums for discussion.
by the way, my reaction to anyone with new ideas will be the exact opposite of the reaction that I cite above. if someone comes along with a new idea or effort that they wish to tack onto my group, I will basically answer, "wow, cool idea, friend. okay, let make it happen. how do we do this?" and by the way, to be perfectly candid, doing so doesn't just help that person, it also helps me; anyone who wants to join my own effort, by adding their own personal ideas, is only helping me by further building the extent of my ideas.
okay, so what do you think of this? to start with, if you agree with this effort, and can help out, I'd like you to please approach one, two or three of your fellow coordinators at WP "Women in Red." let them know that although we will not need their constant input on a continual basis, we will definitely need their vocal input and support right at the outset. otherwise this project will never get off the runway for takeoff; as we're rolling to the runway, every AA gun of the WikiProject Council will be aimed at us, to make sure this never gets off the ground. so if I do know that I have a core group ready, and prepared to support some of these initial ideas, then I'm ready to get started right away, to move ahead now, and to start setting up pages, and initial expressions of these ideas, in order to present to others.
okay, so what do you think of all this? I am totally open to every single comment, input or feedback that you may have. I would really welcome your input and insight. Please feel free to let me know. by the way, Bluerasberry has already been of great help in expressing ideas and comments, so I am tagging him for comment as well. Please feel free to write back. I appreciate your help. thanks!!! --Sm8900 (talk) 15:15, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
Sm8900: As I said before, I am too busy with other things to be able to devote much time to all this. Once you have put together a fairly solid plan, let me know and I'll take a look. Good luck!--Ipigott (talk) 15:29, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
ok, no problem. I will get started on drawing up a detailed plan within the very near future, and will send to you just to keep you up to date. I really appreciate your help. thanks!! --Sm8900 (talk) 15:31, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

new effort set up

I left the note below for several editors. please come by when you get a chance. thanks!!

Hi , Hi all. I have just created a new WikiProject, at
Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Empowerment
. Please come over when you get a chance, and feel free to add your comments on the talk page. if you want to join, please feel free to add your name at the section for members. Right now, this WikiProject page is simply a redirect that points to a draft in my own user space. I want to retain editorial control, simply while I am still revising it enough to be ready to present to others. however, I would like to get some folks on board asap. this can be our new shared space to cover some of the points, concerns, and questions covered here. I hope you'll come over and join sometime. Please note, all comments, views, and opinions are welcome there. I would simply like to start trying to get some members there now, just to get this off the ground. I appreciate your help. thanks. --Sm8900 (talk) 18:46, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
Sm8900: I can see you are becoming increasingly active. I'll have a closer look when I have time.--Ipigott (talk) 18:54, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
that sounds terrific. I really need your input there, as soon as you have time. thanks. --Sm8900 (talk) 03:01, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

Request help with new Council for WikiProjects

Hi. I am trying to create a forum where various WIkiProjects can exchange ideas and information about their best ideas, efforts, methods, and accomplishments. I am the Lead Coordinator at WikiProject History. I tried to create an active exchange at WikiProject Council, but did not get very far when I tried to do so.

I would like to get some interested editors together who might be interested in helping with this idea, either with getting WikiProject Council moving again, or creating a whole new WikiProject to do so.

You can sign up to help at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editors Forum/Members. Right now, this page is a redirect to a draft in my user space; we will move it to the project space as soon as we have ten people signed up.

eventually, the goal would be to have a few people from a wide variety of WikiProjects and varioous topical areas, working together at WIkiProject Council, to help us create a forum and an exchange for ideas and information.

Would you be interested in helping with this? Please let me know. If you wish, you can simply comment on my talk page to let me know any comments or thoughts on this. thanks!! --Sm8900 (talk) 02:34, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
