AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.

Nino Tkeshelashvili

If you get a chance, can you look this one over? There seems to be a whole group of Georgian feminists in her era that we have little coverage on and she was one of the earliest. As always, appreciate your help. SusunW (talk) 23:53, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

You have really done a great job of unearthing information about this early Georgian feminist. You must be becoming quite an expert in Kartuli. Strange so little has been written about her in English. I see we have short articles on Barbare Jorjadze, Mariam Jambakur-Orbeliani, a stub on Ekaterine Gabashvili, but nothing yet on Kato Mikeladze. Not sure whether Anastasia Tumanishvili-Tsereteli was a feminist but she is characterized as such in the Spanish version. The Georgian version has articles on Babilina Khositashvili and Ekaterine Melikishvili. I see Gabashvili and A. Tumanishvili-Tseretlisa also appear in the photo at [2]. Perhaps some of the others there were also feminists. Marijani seems to be an important Georgian poet and children's writer. Actually, Kartuli caused me to find another translator, as I wasn't satisfied with Google. This worked really well and combined with Google made the texts fairly easy to understand. I am not yet at the place where I recognize what any of the characters, much less words, are, but it will come, I am sure. I knew nothing of the history of Georgian feminism, so found this fascinating and am happy to have discovered a whole new area where the study of women's history is thriving. The article is kind of short for GA, but I think I will nominate it anyway to add diversity to our suffrage focus goal on WIG. We are really making headway at reaching 40 nominations. Yesterday, I jumped back and forth between Poland and the Czech Republic as both Joteyko and Wiedermannová-Motyčková got picked up for review and passed. In the process, I found a Czech speaker, which is a big plus for helping with the noun conjugations. As always, thank you so much for reviewing Tkeshelashvili. I found some pretty decent photos for the article as well. I added the writers group to 1day1woman page, since we are finished with the writers editathon, but there are lots of redlinks in it that Rosiestep may be interested in. I'm going to work on Olga Guramishvili-Nikoladze who was a biologist and teacher. Fits in with our scientists. Haven't forgotten about the Inter-Allied Women's Conference, but have a friend coming in from Japan tomorrow, so am pretty busy off Wiki today. SusunW (talk) 21:11, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

• OK. If anyone is still interested, I've finally found the time to look into it. The Danish translation is "Æbledykning" which literally means apple diving. See [3]. SusunW: I'm really sorry about the confusion. After seeing you had nominated Inter-Allied, I thought it was important to make a start on the red links. With your additions, the article is coming on very well. Now I'll try to incorporate more details from the French sources although it looks to me as if you already have the essentials. There are further details of her publications in French and English here but most seem to be listed under the authority control links. Maybe you could make a start on Graziella. I've haven't been able to find very much about her except that she seems to have been involved in the Milano Lyceum, that she is listed as both secretary and philanthropist in a number of sources (probably in connection with the Unione) and that she resigned from the Unione in 1938 for "family reasons". I haven't been able to find any information on her since 1938 except that as a Jew she went to Switzerland. I tried searching Sonnino and Carpi and come up with nothing at all. What you told me here is more than I knew, so I probably can't write an article on her. Sorry. As it's my wife's birthday today, I'll leave Graziella until tomorrow. I found about a dozen sources which mention her briefly but they are nearly all "snippets", making it difficult to find the context. After I start the article, you may be able to pick some of them up and investigate further. I see Cassianto is interested in reviewing Inter-Allied. He seems to have worked on quite a few FA and FL articles, including Marie Lloyd and Hattie Jacques. I hope you all have a wonderful celebration. I don't know Cassianto, so I'll be making a new acquaintance. I might be able to make a tiny stub on Eugénie Beeckmans with enough info to make it survive AfD. There are other sources, but not accessible to me. From this[4], [5], and [6] I get her trade union overview and two awards. Though I can find no birth/death information on her. Some sources give her as Eugénie-Jeanne Beeckmans but she is not the medical doctor Jeanne Beeckman (1891-1963). SusunW (talk) 14:55, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

You've done a good job on your first article with lots of good sources, Less Unless. If you want to submit it to the stub contest, you'll have to add it yourself, following the instructions. The next time you create an article in your user space, call it user:Less Unless/name of article. Hi Ipigott, An anonymous editor with ip 41.210.31.232 , which I assume is the subject of this article,Mavis Owureku-Asare made some changes to this article which I want to rollback but cannot, can you help please? The changes made to the article doesn't make it sound encyclopaedic but promotional.

Celestinesucess: As you noticed, I removed most of the promotional edits. When I suspect biographies I have created have been edited by the subject of the article or a close companion, I often send them an email explaining the problem. I invite them to keep me informed of any inaccuracies or important details which are missing from the article. On this basis, I frequently receive useful suggestions for improvements by email. Though there is a collection in her papers in Atria, all seem to be just informal snapshots taken in the 1930s, most are pretty blurry and I doubt any of them were "published" before they were posted at Atria. Literally, IMO, this was the best of the lot. I scoured the Dutch newspapers, which is how I cleared up the discrepancies in her 1928-1931 period, but found no photographs either in the Netherlands or the Dutch East Indies. I also opted not to call her Betsy. None of the historical sources call her that and as she left Indonesia because she refused to change her name, I kind of doubt she would be happy that a nickname is now being used to refer to her. I could not find any sources at all before the modern era that refer to her as Betsy, so using "common name", I opted for her real name. SusunW (talk) 14:55, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

The problem with my name being unlinked was I had turned on a wikitext option under my signature, I unchecked it in preference and it was fix. another editor (I think he is a teenager from Sweden) told me how to do it. Celestinesucess: Strange you should be asking that now as I have just been reading Claire Jarvis's article from April: What a Deleted Profile Tells Us About Wikipedia’s Diversity Problem. As a result of the earlier deletion, quite a bit of additional information has emerged about Phelps and I think it would be a good idea to try to re-create a biography on the EN Wikipedia. But I suggest you should do your own research rather than just build on the Simple English version. There's a long, long history behind the draft and all the earlier deletions. But now, with the more recent developments on Phelps, it really seems as if she deserves an article. The Everybodywiki page was copied from Draft:Asnath Mahapa. As far as I can see, the draft was deleted simply because it had been hanging around for too long without being moved to mainspace. That means you are free to start a new article. As South Africa's first female pilot, I think she certainly deserves an article. If I were you, I would avoid copying from the Everybody page. Check the secondary sources and start an article in the way you usually do. I see she is mentioned in Timeline of women in aviation and in Women in aviation. SusunW As usual, you've done a wonderful job on this one. I think the only remaining problem is that it is not clear that Ford was on the ship to Sweden from the start. I also wondered whether any Jewish organizations had commented on the citizenship issue - but you don't need to spend more time on it. In connection with suffragists, I started re-creating the deleted article on Alma Sundquist. I think it could be considerably expanded but am bogged down with all kinds of other things at the moment. I always find it very frustrating when hundreds of women's biographies are deleted without trace - but I suppose rules are rules.--Ipigott (talk) 16:57, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Making it evident that Ford was on the ship is an easy fix. I can try to find out about the Jewish organizations, but the negative press was truly horrific. I could hardly find any neutral articles about her from 1921 in the press. I will be happy to work on Sundquist. We still need I think 3 suffragists to meet our 20 article goal for Women in Green. Don't bother with Sundquist unless you think she's really worthwhile. There seems to be lots of material to draw on if you want to expand the article. I think I have done everything I can do on Sundquist, if you want to give it a look-over. I was a bit confused about the whole "proxy" doctor thing Nilsson talks about here, I assumed it meant women could serve as supervisors if there were no men available for the post, but that might need adjusting if I am wrong. I also found this lovely, photo [7], which I think would meet the PD requirements, as it was clearly "taken by unknown Swedish photographers before 1949". SusunW (talk) 21:17, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

I just found proof that the image was published in the US in 1919, so we are definitely good to go to upload it. I' doing that now. Sorry about that. I actually deleted my post a moment later as I saw the "official" running text count was at 1361 B or 222 words which is certainly enough for a stub but not enough for a destub. If you reformat the awards section into running text, it will certainly count as a destub. I tend to agree with you about the start status of articles but in the discussions about the stub contest, several editors were insistent that we should base stubs on at least 1000 B of "running text" (i.e. excluding lists, boxes, headings and sources). Contest progress

Looks like you're doing a great job of running this Ipigott, are you really manally checking all of the entries for it? That's a lot of work! @Rosiestep: Victuallers as well. Why not put up a bank of fresh red links directly at the top of the contest page for people to start? I may tackle a few over the next few weeks and would be more likely to contribute from a shortlist like that. Dr. Blofeld: Thanks for your kind assessment. I really appreciate it when it comes from a contest expert like you. Yes, I've been trying to keep a check on everything that's going on and am pleased to see that virtually all the participants have understood the rules. It would no doubt be a good idea to include redlinks/stubs for expansion each month but it looks to me as if those competing find enough to deal with from the other priorities we are addressing or simply by working on one of their favourite occupations. I think I've been spending enough time on the contests and intend to continue devoting some of my time to creating new articles and assisting other editors. Dr. Blofeld, unfortunately, I can't take credit for much, except for the idea itself: "let's make a push to write stubs at the end of the year, as we've never focused on that before". Ian gets the credit for organizing the idea into a contest, and assuring it's running smoothly. That is certainly a lot of work, so thank you, Ian. The results to date are wonderful: a lot of participants, a lot of stubs, and a lot of stubs being destubbed. Rosiestep: It would indeed help if we had real prizes, even t-shirts or badges, but I think many Wikipedians are just as happy to gain "virtual" recognition for participation. I'm also happy with the way things are progressing, especially for WiR targets, although there has not been very much interest in destubbing. Have you noticed how many of the "stubs" have progressed to Start class or beyond? Pamela Pigeon

Kia ora and thanks for helping with the Pamela Pigeon stub, which is apparently more than a stub. And many thanks for the offer of help. I sent some messages to Rosie on the Wiki Women in Red Messenger site, but she was traveling, so I still wondering about the issues I raised there. Perhaps you could look at the Esther Frumkin and Ann B. Ross pages?

The page that really bugs me is Ann B. Ross. Someone who seems to be interested primarily in French laws on pornography seems to think that my work on Ross is too much like fan mail from some flounder. I don't want to engage with the critic, especially since explaining how wrong he (presumably) is is just plain stupid. But I've published refereed material about women's romance novels (and Ross isn't a romance author), so I understand male 'tude about women writers and readers.

OK, not being able to stop myself, I just tried to provide some cred about my knowledge and my writing skills. But I don't yet grasp the Byzantine back pages of Wikipedia practice. Apparently I don't need to submit my initial efforts at establishing a new page anymore? (I've got more than 250 edits, although I consider myself little more than a newbie.) I wouldn't even know how to take advantage of that. And when someone comes along and pastes a note about problems with pages I've worked on I could just serenely remove those boxes at the top of a page, or ignore/remove an edit/comment that's wrong?

Frumkin is controversial but very interesting. The problem is that I came into the picture after the page was up and I stuck with the citation system in use. That then got pinged for not being clear enough about sources. However, on other pages, when I've used academic style citation (think MLA), that's also been pinged, or rather, just plain rewritten from quotation to re-voicing. Actually, the problem is that, depending on how I've begun a page, or how someone else has begun a page I'm working on, the templates for citation seem to vary significantly. And I don't know how to work my way through the differences.

And could you clarify when direct quotation is acceptable? I firmly believe in honoring a source's voice and actual words rather than always rephrasing in my own words, especially when the source is, say, an expert on the subject in question.

Sorry for going on--and I could keep going on--but I keep seeing contradictory indications of what is and isn't acceptable, so I'm confused. Thanks again. Tarkiwi25 (talk) 07:02, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Tarkiwi25: Thanks for telling me about your difficulties. I'll try to answer them one by one. First of all, I can't find any trace of the messages you sent to Rosie. The best place for them would be on her own talk page or on the WiR talk page where others would have the opportunity to respond too.

I've looked at Ann B. Ross and was rather surprised that an editor as experienced as ReaderofthePack had added so many tags. I think the main reason is probably the fact that you had first covered her books and only later her life. Our biographies usually start with a section on "Early life and education" and then describe the person's career. Discussion of works then usually follows. In this connection, see our Ten Simple Rules. I've now moved the Life section to the top which makes it look more like other biographies.

On Esther Frumkin I agree with the need for inline references. Ideally, each fact in an article should be followed by an appropriate reference but there should at least be one reference per paragraph, preferably at the end. You have obviously carefully researched the background. All you need to do now is to add references where they apply. Let me know if you run into any difficulties.

You certainly do not need to submit draft articles for review. I would recommend you add (or move) them directly to article space yourself, once you are satisfied they are acceptable.

Direct quotes are useful and acceptable but need to be fully referenced. For longer quotes, you should begin the passage with <blockquote> and finish it with </blockquote>.

Hope all this helps. Just let me know if you need further assistance. I realize it can be frustrating to have to cope with criticisms from other editors but in most cases they are made in good faith. As you gain experience, you should be able to cope with them yourself. You are obviously just the kind of contributor we need to improve the encylopaedia's coverage of women authors and their works. I had noticed that in an earlier talk page discussion you mentioned receiving emailed suggestions from editors you've contacted who have conflicts of interest with regards to editing certain articles. I was wondering, of the suggestions that you approve of and implement, do you provide copyright attribution to the editor who suggested them in the edit summary? I always thought this was mandatory, but wasn't sure. I answer a lot of edit requests and wanted to confirm I'm doing them correctly. Thanks for any info you can offer! Spintendo: I think this must be a misunderstanding. I can't recall ever having received specific requests for editing. In some cases news items or similar are brought to my attention. If I use them to develop articles, I then reference them in the normal way. I've wanted to write her for a long time, so finally got it done. I need your help with this source She is the last entry on p 793 and continuing to 794. The problem is the abbreviations, which don't translate and which I have no clue what they stand for. I think there is a section before her first marriage that talks about her education, maybe she was schooled at home which was typical?, but it also mentions gymnasium, so I am unsure. It could do with an overall copyedit and though I found one usable photograph, others on common will require more research, as the tags appear to be incorrect and do not have US rationale. We all make them, it does take a village :). That's really funny, as it is the front cover of the magazine and one of the few where some part, date, title, etc. were not cropped out by filming. It actually appears that was the most frequently used cover, from what I can see. That's a great image. Let me see if I can find any proof of publishing. Since it is tied to a demonstration on a specific day, that should be easier than having to look at over 1,800 articles written by/about Marie Lang in Austrian newspapers/journals. A question about photos for bios

Hello, you said to reach out to you if I had questions, and now I have one about photos. I have been working my way through the latest

Oulfis: Thanks for contacting me. I'm afraid when creating biographies of living people. it's often difficult to find photographs which are free of copyright. Fair use photos can be used on the English Wikipedia itself (not Commons) for photos of people who are no longer living but not for BLPs (biographies of living people). In some cases, you can find photos with acceptable Creative Commons values by searching the various sites here, especially Flickr, but there don't seem to be any for Judith Bakirya. One thing you can do is to include this

BBC summary under "External links", explaining it contains a photo. You could even write to Bakirya, asking whether she could provide a photo for Wikipedia Commons, perhaps inviting her to upload it herself. Last but not least, you could include a request for a photo on the article's talk page. Hope all this helps. You seem to be making good progress with the article. Thanks also for the other six biographies you have created over the past couple of weeks.

As for notability, I would agree with you that their inclusion in the BBC 100 list should be sufficient. Unfortunately, not everyone agrees. We have had a number of cases in which editors have voted in favour of article deletion on the grounds of insufficient secondary sources or because they think one event does not justify inclusion. SusunW: I've been through Women's suffrage in India. Amazing amount of detail. Maybe it would be useful to include something on how suffrage has evolved until today although I can see we already have Women's political participation in India. It might be useful to include a word on how the caste system still seems to affect women more than men in effective voting rights. But I'll leave it up to you. In any case, there are lots of new red links on women deserving biographies. We seem to have quite a number of keen Indian contributors. Women in Red 2020- Central America

Hello! I'm Paparazzzi and I'm interested in working on one of the articles included on Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Missing articles by nationality/El Salvador. I noticed that this project states that: "In January 2020, we are concentrating on women from Central America." Thanks, Roger, I see you have been moving Commons files to "dated" Women of the Day files. I agree that this looks like a good way to make them show up on the date intended but it may be a good idea to move them back later -- unless you think the same names should come up every year. Maybe they could also be used on our main WiR page (perhaps below the TOC) and on the WiR talk page in place of the Women edit image (if Rosie agrees). It seems to work fine on your own user page and it looks as if width could be pasted anywhere. I see these files were originally created for "social media". Thanks for the nice reception. The idea would be to keep the file name as Jan?? Woman of the Day.... not a great solution but the file would be about the Woman of the Day for Jan?? so its not a lie and the image tells you who its about. I wouldn't change the filename back as a) too much work b) use them next year at no effort and c) if we decide its someone else then the file can be over written (and prev version will be retained (See Jan22 in a mo)). It is quite a bit of work. At the moment there are ~700 banners with 2ish for every day. To make it work we need 1 a day to be in the same format so I plan to create 366 files with png format. I made six just now for Feb and its a bit of a faff. Victuallers (talk) 15:32, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Roger, I think you're doing a great job with these so don't worry about moving anything back unless it becomes necessary. I see some of them only have minimal inputs from WiR members but I think it's fine to display them as women of significance on the talk page. I saw your comment just now at the talk page for WikiProject Council. thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I simply don't understand the contentious atmosphere that has arisen there. I truly don't. for me the real problem is that everyone who are busy with WikiProjects are too busy to devote real time to WikiProject Council, and the people who are active at WP:COuncil are simply not interested in promoting it or getting WikiProjects to use it as a real resource. active wikiproject coordinators like yourself are the only ones who can make any real difference there at all. Sm8900: In recent years, I have been pretty active on the harassment issue and am glad to say we have achieved significant progress. The difficulties you have recently experienced are tame compared to the repeated attacks many editors have received over an extended period, often resulting in their deciding to leave Wikipedia for ever. oh, I'm going ahead alright. in fact, the answer you just gave me has greatly reinforced my desire to proceed. it's not solely due to my own experiences. what you said is the whole point. this entire experience has greatly revealed to me that wikipedia, has glaring omissions in this area. I am going to start working on a draft in my own user space forthwith. your own comment just now to me has greatly confirmed exactly what I suspected all along, since yesterday; that this is all just the tip of the iceberg, and that there are glaring omissions and offenses out there waiting to be addressed.

I will be pinging you soon to notify you once I've made some progress. i really look forward to your input. you have been great so far in directly tackling issues head-on. your input is going to be one major part of what enables me to proceed with this idea and to make some real progress. I truly appreciate you asking me that. well, the truth is, i am planning to take a step back for some amount of time, at WP:Council. however it need not be for more than a few days. and anyway, we could also discuss this somewhere else entirely, if we want. the thing is, if i have support from a few active WikiProject coordinators like yourself, then that will give me the main thing that i need in order to move ahead. if we can put a few interested folks together, then that might be what we would need to get started.

by the way, such efforts, can take place anywhere; they could be at WikiProject Council, or somewhere else entirely. where we would discuss this would be entirely up to the group, or to other interested editors; we could open that for discussion as well. what do you think of that? should we get started? I can open a user page if you want to move ahead with this, and we can discuss ideas there. Sm8900: This appears to be a completely new approach rather than a basis for improving or adding more effective subpages to WP Council. I still think it would be useful for you to set out what you think are the shortcomings of the existing situation; that would provide a starting point for defining your goals. I'm not sure what the status of your new group would be. It could possibly be a task force of WP Council, or do you have other ideas? Hi Ian. thanks so much for your points above. you make some great points. by the way, my name is Steve. since I have your real name, we might as well do the introductions. nice to meet you!! I will also email you. thanks. anyway, to answer your highly relevant points above, I totally agree with you. yes, this is something totally new, and yes, maybe it's easier to attach this to WikiProject Council, in order to avoid setting up entirely new things, and instead use the existing resources there. I'd be glad to do that; however, to do so, I will definitely need your help. if I set up a whole new resource, that I seek to establish at WikiProject Council, then I will need a clear reason and a clear firm foundation for doing so. the only way that I will be able to do is if I have a clear core group of existing, highly-active WikiProject coordinators who are already on board with this, already see it as helpful and necessary,. and who are willing to help out and to be vocal.

I need those coordinators to actively participate right on day one, just to express their confirmation that they are going to be actively part of this, and they see it as relevant. otherwise the supporters of the status quo at wikiproject council will simply seek to discourage me. even though my goal is to help others and to build new helpful and relevant resources, they will try to depict this as simply an attempt to set up a whole new structure that we don't need. so any help would be appreciated.

further details:

Okay, so here is how we proceed. I plan to set up broad umbrella groups to encompass entire topical areas. so we would have one umbrella group for history, one for politics, one for the arts, one for science, one for pop culture and so on and so on. once we do that, then within those umbrella groups, we could have various working groups, based mainly on function, but also based on topical area. so we could have one working group within history for helping new editors, one for sharing methods for improving articles, one for exchanging info on running a WikiProject. or alternately, we could make it much simpler; we could have one working group for experienced coordinators on active wikiprojects, and then that working group would be to enable them to share ideas and methods on any topics that they see fit to share.

underneath the working groups, we could have task forces. these would be outgrowths of the working groups, based on what active editors wish to set up. if no one has any ideas for task forces, then they would not exist. it would only be based upon real ideas from active editors, who seek to actively work on them and be available to exchange ideas.

okay, so to do all this, i.e. in order to propose all this, and then act upon it, and then set up pages for this, I need the active, vocal support, from a group of experienced, established WikiProject coordinators, right at the outset, and available on a constant basis. If I go to WikiProject Council by myself, and try to propose this, yes, laugh at me. they will have themselves a good chortle over the idea that I could think I will set up resources to, ya know, help people, or get ideas exchanged, or move things ahead etc etc etc. in their minds, lack of activity is a good thing; they feel it indicates stability, and lack of problems. it doesn't occur to them that the fact that we have active WikiProjects out there, defining new goals, and moving ahead, means we should be an active resource for providing ideas and forums for discussion.

by the way, my reaction to anyone with new ideas will be the exact opposite of the reaction that I cite above. if someone comes along with a new idea or effort that they wish to tack onto my group, I will basically answer, "wow, cool idea, friend. okay, let make it happen. how do we do this?" and by the way, to be perfectly candid, doing so doesn't just help that person, it also helps me; anyone who wants to join my own effort, by adding their own personal ideas, is only helping me by further building the extent of my ideas.

okay, so what do you think of this? to start with, if you agree with this effort, and can help out, I'd like you to please approach one, two or three of your fellow coordinators at WP "Women in Red." let them know that although we will not need their constant input on a continual basis, we will definitely need their vocal input and support right at the outset. otherwise this project will never get off the runway for takeoff; as we're rolling to the runway, every AA gun of the WikiProject Council will be aimed at us, to make sure this never gets off the ground. so if I do know that I have a core group ready, and prepared to support some of these initial ideas, then I'm ready to get started right away, to move ahead now, and to start setting up pages, and initial expressions of these ideas, in order to present to others.

okay, so what do you think of all this? I am totally open to every single comment, input or feedback that you may have. I would really welcome your input and insight. Please feel free to let me know. by the way, Bluerasberry has already been of great help in expressing ideas and comments, so I am tagging him for comment as well. Please feel free to write back. Request help with new Council for WikiProjects

Hi. I am trying to create a forum where various WIkiProjects can exchange ideas and information about their best ideas, efforts, methods, and accomplishments. I am the Lead Coordinator at WikiProject History. I tried to create an active exchange at WikiProject Council, but did not get very far when I tried to do so.

I would like to get some interested editors together who might be interested in helping with this idea, either with getting WikiProject Council moving again, or creating a whole new WikiProject to do so.
