Tchaikovsky Operas
So far, so good on what you've written so far in Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Your keeping things short gives info without impeding the flow of the article in any serious degree, so it's probably best to keep things that way. Looking forward to seeing more. BTW, know what you mean about laboring over seemingly small amounts of complex or hard-to-phrase material. Was going through that this morning on "Relationship With The Five" as you did the same further down the article. That section is hopefully a little clearer and more complete now. Don't worry about time. Just do the best job you can. I'm juggling a number of commitments and time restraints myself, so you're not alone.
As for Brian and the separate Works and Life thing, I can see both your points. On one hand, it can be all too easy to let an article get bogged down by going down what can seem several avenues at once. That may be his concern here and, to a certain point, I am wary of, as well. However--and this is a big "however"--you also have the question of how the composer's life affects his music and vice verse. With Tchaikovsky, the two are enmeshed much closer than usual, so you have to deal to some point with one when talking about the other. The bottom line: How far can you go down that road without derailing things and having to start again from scratch? It's basically one long, extended balancing act. I'm having to do some careful weighing and measuring myself with the musical politics Tchaik had to navigate around. It's all relevant, the full extent of it is not spelled out terribly often in Western sources and here I am having to show its importance in such a damn short amount of time. But it also can't be avoided--it has to be done so that people will have a clue what all the fuss between, say, Tchaik and Rimsky-Korsakov is all about. I know your job, at least in the Life section, is not an easy one. I realize that. But the rest of us working on the article really appreciate what you're doing. Keep it up. As you can see, one of the requirements is that at least one ambassador or professor is a Wikipedian, as this should give students more access to helpful information about contributing to Wikipedia and creating good content. New software release
We are getting near to the next release of the
Village Pump
to see if the problem has been reported. If it has not then report it so that the developers can get a view of the problem. One area of concern is the scripts used by users to perform routine tasks. It could be that if this change is included in the deployment then scripts may need to be changed to declare modules the script is dependent upon. So if your favourite script fails to work this could be the problem and will need to be fixed.

Rimsky-Korsakov or Rubinstein operas, anyone?
Hi there. Your work on Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's operas made me curious on how knowledgeable you are about operas by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov or Anton Rubinstein. R-K is an FA I shepherded through FAC a year or two ago but I've never been happy about its music section, especially regarding the operas, on which R-K spent a considerable amount of his life and artistic effort. Since I'm slowly going through articles related to Tchaikovsky, I'll eventually have to address Rubinstein since he was Tchaik's composition teacher at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. Is there any way you could eventually help me out with either of these projects? I'm talking long-term, timing-wise, so please don't think I'm asking about tackling everything right away. I only know of Olsen because I have this DVD of Semiramide. A classier noise than Florez in my opinion. His Met career seems to have come to an abrupt stop in 1997, as far as I could tell from their archives. New software release
By the time you read this the new software release mentioned in the last newsletter should be in as it is currently scheduled for 2 March. Problems in switching other wikis have been encountered, most notably Commons, which was reverted twice and, at the time of writing, is still experiencing problems with the new software. Hello Mr Tell. A new editor, AktadG, has prepared a page for the Oxford Georgian Socieyt in his sandbox. A previous attempt I believe got deleted. Adopt a journalist project

My students are back from spring break and will be starting their sandbox page and drafting this week. I'm giving them the go ahead if they've done their research and listed their citatations on their user page. I'm instructing them to go to our course page, click on the red link for their person, and choose "special:mypage..." to create their page. You'll be listed as one of their contacts if they should need help. In a week or so, the students will be getting to the point where they should be able to submit. Could you review some of these to tell students if they are ready to submit to AFC?

Hello, I saw that you have created an article about a Serbian violinst. I was wondering if you and I could make the Petar Stojanović become a disambiguation page and you would move the article about the musician to something like Petar Stojanović (Serbian violinist) or Petar Stojanović (Serbian musician) etc. or simply without Serbian at the begining? Because there is another Petar Stojanović that plays football for NK Maribor and couple of days ago made a debut for the club, thus becoming the youngest footballer to appear for Maribor in Slovenian top division. He is also a member of the national youth selection so he is likely to gain prominence in the future. I would create an article about him using Petar Stojanović (footballer) or something like that:). Link rot
This month I thought that we should focus on link rot in articles. Articles are created with lots of references to online sources as this is often easier than using printed sources. This is all well and good until a few months down the line when the web site is no longer available or has been re-organised and the page linked to has been moved. Whatever the reason for the change results in the reference link in our article becoming dead or just pointing at the main page of the site in question. The link therefore provides no verification for the information in our article and needs to be repaired. If you find a link like this then it should be tagged with the {{
Wayback machine to see if there is an archived copy of the page available. If an archived version is located then use the |archiveurl= and |archivedate= fields of the {{citation
}} template to record the archived version of the page.
The more information that is recorded when the reference is added the easier it is to find replacement URLs so remember to record as much information as possible when adding a reference. A bare URL with no information as to page title, publisher, publication date etc. makes finding replacements almost impossible. You can add archive details when adding a reference so that there is a backup copy already recorded for the reference. A BOT is currently operating to add archive details to live links to prevent future link rot. For more information on the subject of link rot see

It would be good, if this month, we try to reduce the number of {{dead link}} templates in the project's articles as a BOT is currently going round adding the template to articles.

Elections
May is the month for local elections to take place in many of our town and cities. This will create a lot of work in updating all of the place articles that include council make-up details. In addition each of the elections will require a new article creating to cover details of the election and the results in each of the wards. A number of elections from the last round of elections have not yet been created and it would be good if the missing election articles could be created so that we have a full set of recent elections for Yorkshire.
At the same time as the local council elections a number of cities in the area are holding a
referendum on elected mayors
. The main article will need to be updated with the results from each of the cities involved and any background that may be relevant to that article. Individual articles covering the referendum in each of the cities involved would also be useful to create while the details and references are to hand in the local press.

Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 9,769 last month to 9,824 on May 28th). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 74 is just ahead of

has the lead in FAs at 56 out of a total number of 2,993 articles.
Currently we have thirty one Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
Commons links
This month I thought that I would mention the {{
Commons category inline
}} can be used instead to add an entry to the External links section.
The problem with both these templates is they use the article name as the name for the category on Commons so if an article is renamed the link is broken. To overcome this please ensure that all usages of these templates have as the first parameter the name of the category on Commons that is being used, even if it is the same as the article title. To enable those usages that have not been given a parameter to be tracked the hidden category Category:Commons category template with no category set has been set up. This has initially only been applied to the {{Commons category}} template. It would be good if members fixed these while editing articles to avoid having to edit specifically to fix the problem.
For newer members you can see hidden categories by setting the "Show hidden categories" option in the "Advanced options" section of the "Appearance" tab of the "my preferences" link.

WikiProject Country Houses
I was wondering if you or you know anybody who'd be interested in such a project. One of my chief loves is British country houses and I don't at present see a project set up to help coordinate it and to collaborate over. Was it you who had that big list of missing country houses or something? If so, a big yes, I want to make the list as complete as possible and have something to work towards. Ideally all that are mentioned in the sum of Pevsner's books and more. Its just I was doing some work recently and impressed how each village seemed to have about 2 or 3 country houses! Well, if the sources exist demolished houses are valuable too, the lists are supposed to include both, although articles on different buildings of the same place would of course be redundant. I had expected a full glossary of building entries at the back of the books. I'm thinking what the best way to do this would be. Is it possible maybe you could expand the list by county by scanning through each book and entering them into the lists whenever you can? Obviously it would be a gradual thing, but would be very valuable to even just access the names because potentially they can each be researched and missing articles started.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:43, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know about you, but I found User:AlanPalgut's removal of the no-break spaces was not very helpful. It's my impression that Michael's adding them made it much easier to find the appropriate blank cells in the table. When working on an article it is always worth considering if it can be nominated for the Did You Know? section on the main page. May be a little more work but it does get the article recognised and exposed to a wider audience. The main requirements for a nomination are that, within the last five days, it was created, expanded fivefold or, for an unsourced
BLP, newly referenced and expanded twofold. If you think an article meets these basic requirements then take a look at the eligibility criteria and make a nomination
. The hook is the important part of the process as that is the text that will appear on the front page and this must be mentioned in the article with an appropriate inline citation to back it up. If you can suggest more than one hook for an article then the more chances of it been selected for inclusion on the front page. If you do nominate it is important to keep an eye on the nomination as there may be questions/suggestions from those reviewing the hooks that you will need to respond to if the nomination is to succeed.

(talk page stalker) Even if they don't participate, once an article is in mainspace, these kinds of issues should always be discussed on the article's talk page so that a transparent record of them is easily available. Discussions on User talk pages get archived and are scattered all over the place. It also helps when making some edits to be able to say "See talk page" in the edit summary. Since there seems to be one good-faith but entirely uncommunicative editor making potentially unhelpful edits to the list, e.g. [1], [2], etc. it's a good idea to highlight your reasons for reversion on the actual talk page, particularly if they persist. Hi GuillaumeTell, I wonder of you could help me. I'm making a website devoted to the opera, the peculiarity of which is line-by-line librettos. Recently I updated two Wiki pages on operas by Adolphe Adam: Le chalet and Si j'étais roi, I added links to libretto on my website. Libretto is really hard to find. Indeed.
My links were deleted by User:Alexf[3] because of spammy. What do you think about it?

I am sending this note to Wikipedians with whom I have most closely collaborated over the last six years or so. After pondering hard during a month's wiki-break in July I have sadly decided to withdraw fully from contributing. I have been worn down by continual carping, sniping and belittling from a wearisome few (you know the sort of people I refer to); the joy has gone out of taking part in this wonderful enterprise. I should be more resilient, but alas it's finally got to me.
Working with you has been a pleasure and a privilege: I count myself fortunate to have had such colleagues. My warmest wishes go with you for the future. I shall be happy to do any research, copy-editing, fact-checking etc you may ever feel inclined to ask me to do – but safely offline.

Philip Tilden
Very good to hear from you and thanks for adding PT to the British Architects list. He is quite interesting and in the 20s had an amazing client list! Now almost unknown. The Bettley RIBA monograph is the only work I know on him and Google gets you very little. Nevertheless, there's quite a lot more on him that can go in and I'll work the article up over time.

Sporting feast
Just in case it has escaped members notice but August is a big sporting month with the
2012 Olympic Games
taking place at the start of the month and the 2012–13 Football season getting under way from the middle of the month. There are likely to be lots of articles that will need changing as we go through the month with new signings, new records etc. so keep an eye on sport related articles and try and keep them up to date.
I have picked a pair of sport related items for this month's collaboration from the suggestions on the project talk page. So those of you with a sporting slant should have plenty to get going with this month.

Schools back
This month is the time for the start of a new school year. All of those pupils going to a new school will be looking for information on their new school and so the school articles under the project's banner will get higher than usual hits. GuillaumeTell, I was wondering if you would be willing to sign up for another semester with my course? Students are again adopting journalists or events in which journalists have been killed. This time I am focusing on Mexico, Somalia, Syria and Lebanon, but I do have several students working on Pakistan, Bangledesh, Cambodia and others. You can take a look at the spread of the
assignments. In addition, I have some content experts who know the language and culture for several of these countries. Greater care has been taken this semester in the selection of assignments by making sure there is documentation before students begin. Thank you for your contributions so far to the project! Interestingly, while adding a few dates to the Composed column just now, I've had a look at about 3/4 of the entries in Grove Opera and quite a few of the radio operas have subsequently been staged: both Bäck operas, Dallapiccola's, Egk's, one of Giannini's, two of Henze's, Lorentzen's, Menotti's, one of Mihalovic's, Petrovic's, both of Pizzetti's. I'm a student in Dr. Tew's class at USI. Thank you for your words of encouragement, Mr. Tell. After I implemented the changes you suggested and fixed a couple ref tags in the aftermath section, the context section fixed itself. I still have some work to do on the article before submitting it, and I think it will be interesting to see new information added later on perhaps by those who knew de Dios better.
