Mister Sobel isn't Ambassador anymore, and he is to be followed up by someone else, who has several lawsuits running against him. I recommend an update of this article. Arnall seems to arrive really soon - I've put him in.

I think this page could benefit from a slight change: instead of listing ambassadors, Chargés d'affaires, and nations without an embassy seperately, how about putting them all in one list that simply says what the status is? Much less confusing I think to keep it all together. Unless anyone objects, I'll make that change in a few days. Swegner 06:57, 10 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea, but what about a way to make it so there aren't 4 separate Australia entries (or any other number depending on the particular country)? --Easter Monkey 08:53, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I can simply leave out consulates and only include embassies -I don't feel strongly either way. My thinking was that by including consulates we avoid the difficult question of whether or not to include places like Hong Kong which are clearly important missions but are still counted as consulates. Wouldn't it be an idea to put in then ambassadors arrive and when their term would expire? Or even keep historical data.

With the valid-to date, the chance of believing in stale data goes down: it would show as being out of date.

Does Mediawiki have an option to hide data, so we can show the current ambassadors and fold out the history in the same page, or would be need to keep the history in separate documents? The latter would make it more work to maintain and would lead to many very lightweight pages ("historical ambassadors to France" - yawn).

I have just corrected the article to read 'Holy See' instead of Vatican City. This is because the Vatican does not send ambassadors around the world because it does not want to. The Holy See does though. The CIA Factbook explains it this way:

The term "Holy See" refers to the authority, jurisdiction, and sovereignty vested in the Pope and his advisors to direct the worldwide Catholic Church. The Holy See has a legal personality that allows it to enter into treaties as the juridical equal of a state and to send and receive diplomatic representatives. Vatican City, created in 1929 to administer properties belonging to the Holy See in Rome, is recognized under international law as a sovereign state, but it does not send or receive diplomatic representatives.

Shouldn't the name of the article be changed from "Ambassadors to the United States" to "List of ambassors to the United States"? Because, it doesn't really have any information relating to the job at all, it just seems to be a list of names. So the name's not very appropriate. Any interest in creating a new column noting whether the current ambassador is a political appointee versus a career foreign service officer? Hello all,

Here are the details of my recent edit.

Since N. Cyprus (TRNC) and W. Sahara are in the table, I've added Taiwan (ROC), Abkhazia, and S. Ossetia to the table. All three are in the same boat as the TRNC and W. Sahara (i.e. unrecognized). I also added a note about Kosovo's status in order to keep NPOV. The famious ambassdors box listed Shirley Temple Black as serving at the UN. This is not correct. See the State Dept.'s list of US-UN Ambassdors here: [1]. She did serve in Ghana and Czechoslovakia, though; see [2] and [3]. So in this case, the other two countries are correct. How about including a paragraph on the numerous stages involved in the process before someone becomes U.S. ambassador?

1. President announces intent to nominate
2. President sends nomination to Senate
3. candidate testifies in Senate committee hearing
4. candidate is voted out of committee
5. Senate confirms
6. Ambassador-Designate sworn in, becomes Ambassador
7. presents credentials to foreign head of state

The section of the article called "Nations Without Exchange of Ambassadors" is a nearly verbatim copy of this website. Also, it mostly repeats information that can already be found in the notes to the list above. I think this page is now rather out of date: According to the Washington Post most US Ambassadorships are now vacant except for China, Israel and the United Kingdom. I don't know whether it's worth updating the main chart to show most of the ambassadorships are vacant or to wait until the new administration nominates candidates to fill the roles. gbrading (ταlκ) 12:05, 24 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You are right, and we're definitely working on it. It's not that this list hasn't been touched since January 20, but we do definitely need more help cleaning the list up. There are just so many politically-appointed Assistant Secretaries and Ambassadors that it's hard to keep up. I know I and a few other editors are doing our best to change articles as we go, and you are more than welcome to jump in and help out as well.
