Removed unsourced statement

cleanup

The recent AfD ended in no consensus (default to keep), but there is almost universal recognition that the article is

    WP:RS material, for example regarding her employment at NASA, which is sourced with a personal webpage and some NSF public relations websites. Even at this, it seems there is little left and there is really no credible claim of notability. Perhaps this should be notability-tagged, but I'll defer that for now. I have restored the reference to Meir growing up in Caribou, Maine, which is included in the list of categories. I have also restored the reference to her service as an aquanaut (on NEEMO 4), which is also included in the categories and illustrated in one of the photos. The article was originally one of a long series I wrote on aquanauts (especially those from the NEEMO missions) who did not previously have articles. Gildir (talk) 20:00, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see two problems here. First, you're adding details on a BLP having no real
WP:RS (strictly speaking, personal web pages, even from NASA, are not acceptable). Second, there is no real claim of notability here (being an "aquanaut" is not notable per se), so I think tagging may be in order if an actual claim cannot be made sometime soon. I have done some preliminary checking and cannot find anything for which this person might actually be notable. Please add something, if you know of it, and please make sure it is properly sourced (i.e. no more web pages or Youtube videos) and we can go from there. This article is still problematic, as almost none of the sources are
WP:RS, while the sources that are satisfactory mention the subject only peripherally. I'm going to do some homework here to see if I can find anything acceptable in the way of sources. I invite interested parties to do the same. The current webcruft has to be struck from sources and moved to external links, where it belongs. Astronaut

      • Meir's article has been around for a while, i.e. well before she became an astronaut candidate. Her notability was questionable at that time (2 AfDs ending in "no consensus"), so this this particular case is really more of a coincidence with respect to national bias.         • Considering the fact that the Astronaut Class of 2013 has completed training quite some time ago, it is no longer proper to call them 'Astronaut candidates' rather they should be called 'Astronauts' which is only right. This is true for all 'Astronaut candidates' of the Class of 2013 and probably of that of 2015 as well. A new class was recently selected in June 2017. I understand that some members of the Astronaut Class of 2013 have already been assigned to future ISS missions. Please see <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Hague>. Thanks. Use of "astronaut"

I thought it was the convention to not call someone an astronaut (cosmonaut, taikonaut, etc.) until they've actually traveled to space, which Meir has not. Is that not the case anymore? -- Hux (talk) 16:45, 6 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly restructure NASA career part???

I'm thinking this might need to be restructured. I've found a whole bunch more info on NASA's site, and even before I add it, this section is still looking a bit long and a list-like. It's turning into, at this point, into a bunch of unlinked statements. Also, she has recently done some work with ESA which I don't think ought to fall under the category of 'NASA career'. Maybe 'Aerospace career'? 'Spaceflight career'? I'd appreciate a little guidance/advice because I'm a little unsure; since I'm a relatively new user. "Relevance of Hanukkah celebration"

Regarding "Relevance of Hanukkah celebration? Not the first Jewish astronaut to do so, much less the first astronaut to celebrate a religious holiday in space"—what matters, in my opinion, is what is applicable to the subject of the biography. It doesn't matter that she is "Not the first Jewish astronaut to do so, much less the first astronaut to celebrate a religious holiday in space". Dozens of astronauts have celebrated religious festivals in space, but (with the possible exception of firsts), this isn't mentioned in their articles. There's nothing any more fundamentally noteworthy about a Jewish astronaut celebrating Hanukkah in space than there is about a Christian astronaut celebrating Christmas in space. Sure, you have a reliable source that mentions the fact, but trivial facts are regularly mentioned in reliable sources and that doesn't make those facts any less trivial or any more worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, as explained on the

Photo Gallery/Extra Photos

Greetings. Could a gallery be started of Jessica Meir, with pictures of her doing various tasks like spacewalk training, etc. An example would be on Sunita Williams' article here. I once added a few images on this article, but removed them out of fear of getting penalized for not having permission in the first place. These are the 2 files I would like added in the main article: File:Jessica Meir - Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (1).jpg File:Meir and Hill.jpg I know the Meir & Hill image is of poor quality, so can you look for another image of her at NASA before becoming an astronaut? Jessica Meir

Jessica Meir (born 1977) is an American-Swedish NASA astronaut, marine biologist, and physiologist. She was previously an assistant professor of anesthesia at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, following postdoctoral research in comparative physiology at the University of British Columbia. She has studied the diving physiology and behavior of emperor penguins in Antarctica, and the physiology of bar-headed geese, which are able to migrate over the Himalayas. Meir launched on September 25, 2019, to the International Space Station onboard Soyuz MS-15, where she served as a flight engineer during Expedition 61 and Expedition 62. On October 18, 2019, Meir and Christina Koch became the first women to participate in an all-female spacewalk.
