what in Earth is SALA? Lugano district? who wrote it?

The numbers for Basel and Geneva include the Swiss surroundings only - however, the official number for Basel is 731'000 (including suburbs in France and Germany) and about 690'000 for Geneva, which would of course alter the sequence. This definitely requires some cleanup. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.1.203.3 (talk) 18:31, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Missing references: the source of these numbers should be given. I also have the impression that the numbers are about five years old.

Towns instead of cities

Even though Zurich, Bern, Genava, Basel can easily be called cities, most other listed municipalities should hardly be called a city. Formally, we only speak about a town (de: Stadt, fr: ville, it: città) in Switzerland, being city a rather an US-American formal term, and therefore as such not recognized in Switzerland. Just a few of many examples: you can hardly call Werdenburg, Splügen, Visp, or Illanz a city, though they own the status of a town. But even in the case of Chur, or Uster I would not call them a city, though they obviously are a town. Therefore, I propose to convert the article into a "list of towns in Switzerland" including the term change throughout the article. -- ZH8000 (talk) 16:16, 17 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Moved from my talk page. -- ZH8000 (talk) 11:20, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again- I saw your edit calling Fribourg a town rather than a city. Both fr and de wikis say that CH would define it as a ville/Stadt (fr:Villes_de_Suisse, de:Liste der Städte in der Schweiz), Of course those two terms don't necessarily always translate to city in English, but I believe most anglophones would call Fribourg a city. Having visited it myself, I certainly would, at least here on wp, though it wouldn't sound incorrect if someone called it a town in conversation. But I didn't want to revert you without checking in. Eric talk 22:27, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Eric:In Switzerland we do not make a formal or even an official distinction between a town and a city; each Swiss town is either called Stadt, ville, città, or citad. In each official Swiss language there is no distinction between a "smaller" or "larger" town. In Germany they speak of a "Großstadt" if the town has more than 100'000 inhabitants; it's officially defined as such. In Switzerland, such an official distinction is not existing. As I write in my first comment, I would only call Zurich, Bern, Genava, Basel, Lausanne as "cities", hardly any other town. Therefore, I would generally prefer to call any town in Switzerland "just" a town. But there is no formal or official justification for this. -- ZH8000 (talk) 11:20, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
ZH8000, my point is that in English, we use the word city to describe a municipality like Fribourg. The definition of the term city varies according to the government or agency doing the defining, but there is no question that a community like Fribourg – capital of its canton and seat of a large diocese, with a big cathedral, many densely packed multi-story buildings, a 10,000-student university, a trolley bus system, a population density of over 4,000 people per square km, and a skyline like this – is called a city by the great majority of English speakers. See also: AHD: town, AHD: city. Eric talk 16:14, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Recent updates

To editor Tobyc75: made an update regarding inhabitant figures. Unfortunately, several towns are now missing, such as Cully, Echalens, Huttwil, and several others. Why? --- And please check the erronous refs! -- ZH8000 (talk) 20:52, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Those towns, Cully, Echalens, Huttwil and several others (which others?) no longer appear in the reference given (#2). In fact a number of these "historic town rights (h) and/or market towns (m)" do not appear anywhere in any reference that I could find anywhere on this page. Where did they come from? Is it a random list? A collection of unsourced ideas? Is the intention to include any place that HDS calls a town anywhere in the text? If so, how did these historic towns/market towns get picked seeing as how the vast majority are unsourced? Tobyc75 (talk) 21:38, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the question is rather, why did you delete them? And why not others? These towns never appeared on the list of official, statistical towns, since they are not, but they are historic ones only, like many others on the list. But I thought, this should be obvious, isn't it? Well, you made the change, I think you should check your errors! Otherwise I am looking forward to undo the whole change. And yes, any historic town should be on the list, that's excately the purpose, and has been for years!!! So please stay consistent with any change you are intending. It's not a question of arbitrary, personal preferences. thanks. -- ZH8000 (talk) 08:23, 15 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
They were the only ones I noticed that were not on the list, so it's not a case of arbitrary, personal preferences, I just removed them because I noticed they weren't on the list that the article claims is used to justify the inclusion of towns in the article. Really, there needs to be a source for the rest of the towns that are on this list. Just because it was done in the past doesn't make it right. And I just don't have time to dig through all the unsourced claims to see if the rest of the so-called historic towns were really market towns or had a town right. Keeping them on the list without any references seems to be an excellent example of arbitrary, personal preferences. However, feel free to re-add the 3 former towns (note that Cully isn't even a municipality anymore) with sources. If you revert the changes, you will be going back to older data with several errors (eg. incorrect population numbers, communities like Sala that are red links and don't seem to exist now or have been a town in the past, etc).Tobyc75 (talk) 21:32, 15 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Densities?

Why didn't you list population densities on the list? Busybody64 (talk) 21:49, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
