DYK for The Zürau Aphorisms

I ain't superstitious ...

... if I was, I would probably believe in magic, miracles, mahdis and messiahs. But I lean more towards animism. If I sometimes ignore a suggestion it does not mean I don't appreciate it, just that I am being rude, which comes naturally to me. :~) Aymatth2 (talk) 01:57, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

  • The above is obscure. Something struck me as odd about "Many ... believe in animism and are superstitious and believe in witchcraft and magic, but some also have Christian or Islamic beliefs." It seems to link animism with superstition, and to separate superstition, witchcraft and magic from Christian beliefs. To some, the link would be questionable, and others would question the separation. I looked at this one and thought maybe I should add to it, then got sidetracked, looked again and thought maybe not, but never got round to responding, then did a quick check that immediately brought up Encountering Eloyi, which muddies the whole picture. Dashes

Hello, just one small thing: please try to pay attention to

how dashes are generally used on Wikipedia. In this edit to the Frascati article, you changed an en dash to a hyphen. Graham87

I'm afraid that I'm going to have to give up on that effort, perhaps I'm not smart enough, but london2012.com is strongly resisting my attempts to retrieve HTML from the site, and without that, any automatic solution to the missing references is impossible. I'm sorry, I wish there were another way. Any suggestions welcomed. --j⚛e deckertalk 23:11, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Mmmm, not dead yet! Got a suggestion on scraping from LegoTKM, looks like it's working. Back to thinking about BRFA. --j⚛e deckertalk 01:00, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
I think it's going to be more difficult since london2012.com is redirecting you to the paralympics. Ryan Vesey 02:50, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
Not a problem, if you can get to one of the athletes, there's still (so far) a working search bar there for the current ones. E.g., here. I have been able to programmatically get to and get the results from typing something into that bar. But there is, historically speaking, a deadline, and I have no idea if the site will stick around long enough for the BRFA process. Probably. --j⚛e deckertalk 14:03, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

Your Alcatraz work is fantastic! I've been thinking about the Alcatraz template. Until I added Citadel, all the entries were related to Alcatraz during its federal penitentiary period. The citadel was from the military history period; I think it's the only entry from that time. How to differentiate between periods within the template? --Rosiestep (talk) 14:25, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Alcatraz photos

The library one is a little iffy. It's sourced to a federal archive, but there is no information about the original author. Considering that it was a federal prison, it seems likely to be PD-USgov, but we can't really say for sure.(Theoretically it could be a press photo included in the federal historical archive, for example.) I searched for more info about that archive ("interpretation negative collection"), but didn't find anything. If you're serious about using the photo, it might be worth contacting them about the contents of the archive and forwarding what you find to OTRS.

Re dining hall, there's a photo on this page by one Carl Sundstrom, who is described in contemporary press accounts as a records clerk at Alcatraz.[1] (i also found some recent books etc describing him as a guard; maybe he held both positions.) In any event, given that Alcatraz was a federal prison when the photos were taken, he'd certainly have been a federal employee in the course of his employment, so the photo would be Pd-USgov. Hope this helps! Calliopejen1 (talk) 03:23, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Collaboration

Dear Dr. Blofeld,

Thank you very much for the welcome both you and Rosie have given me to continue with our old association of writing DYKs. Rosie has made a very nice gesture of dedicating her 505th DYK (a joint article with you), which was also my last land mark number when I stopped editing on wiki last August 2011 due to illness. I am sure we will continue with this camaraderie for a long time. I have written some artciles in the draft form which are now locked in my laptop which has crashed. I hope to recover the files shortly and post them on DYK with you both jointly. Warm greetings and regards.--Nvvchar. 01:56, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

I have almost completed my inputs to the two Alcatraz articles. I may add a little more tomorrow. You may now like to post them for DYK (My first two after return to editing on wiki) and later for GA. I will now work on other articles suggested by you and also A-Z articles which are now in draft form from tomorrow.--Nvvchar. 03:05, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

I have completed my inputs to the articles Fakanau and Rufe Persful. A photo of the Fakanau dance could add to the get up of the article. --Nvvchar. 01:07, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

I could not open the Alcatraz file due to a decrypt in error.--Nvvchar. 14:54, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

Stewart Iron Works

Too tired to finish off the History section. There's a bit more in Dunham's book that should be added. And then the History paragraphs need to sync up. Travel day tomorrow, so might not get to it until Sat. --Rosiestep (talk) 05:34, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

I'm going to finish up Stewart IW and do a couple of other things in the next hour. Let me know when I can jump into Alc Fed Pen#inmates. For a start, alphabetize. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:21, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Ragol Al Mostaheel.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to

non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale
.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page.
