update

Still on tablet, so forgive the typos. Heading home, mom in law is doing very well. We will be going back Saturday thru Tuesday to help when she gets home from the hospital and spell my sister in law, who lives right next door to her parents. All docs seem to think she should recover completely, which ain’t bad for a 79 YO they had to do 10 minutes of CPR when she coded in the ambulance...when we go back, will take (crappy) laptop to get some stuff done. Tablet works fine enough for some things, but not wiki editing. Am I’m ready to not spend my days in hospital chairs...Ealdgyth - Talk 23:26, 10 April 2018 (UTC)

William fitzRa?ulf

For what it's worth, there is a reason you didn't find William fitzRadulf - there isn't one. There is a William fitzRanulf who was the Whitchurch founder, the family having an association with Lewes. Farrer said that the earl's brother Ralph had a son William, because a William confirmed and extended his father Ranulf's donation to Lewes. The unstated assumption is that Ranulf = Radulf (Ralph). Clay confirms the existence of a William fitzRanulf as Whitchurch founder, Lewes donor, and also appearing in the Lilleshall chartulary, but rightly points out that just as this man is always William fitzRanulf, the earl's brother is always Radulf and the names Ranulf and Radulf are usually distinct. WikiCup 2018 May newsletter

The second round of the 2018 WikiCup has now finished. Most contestants who advanced to the next round scored upwards of 100 points, but two with just 10 points managed to scrape through into round 3. Our top scorers in the last round were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with three featured articles
  • Republic of Texas Iazyges, with nine good articles and lots of bonus points
  • India Yashthepunisher, a first time contestant, with two featured lists
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with seventeen good topic articles
  • United States Usernameunique, a first time contestant, with fourteen DYKs
  • San Francisco Muboshgu, a seasoned competitor, with three ITNs and
  • South Carolina Courcelles, another first time contestant, with twenty-seven GARs

So far contestants have achieved twelve featured articles between them and a splendid 124 good articles. Commendably, 326 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2018 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met; most of the GARs are fine, but a few have been a bit skimpy.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on

Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Copyright issue... [Unfounded copyright issue with regard to Battle of Poison Spring page, please restore text]

"Ealdgyth" and "Justlettersandnumbers",

I readily admit that I am a bit bewildered as to how OSU (or anyone else for that matter) could have merely scanned a U.S. government publication and then "copyrighted it" when federal laws and regulations read to the contrary. Copyright laws clearly state that any work created by a federal government employee or officer is in the public domain, provided that the work was created in that person’s official capacity.

In fact, every volume of

The War of the Rebellion: a Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies that OSU's Department of History has scanned onto their site clearly states in the "[Preface]" that ... "By an act approved June 23,1874, Congress made an appropriation "to enable the Secretary of War
to begin the publication of the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion, both of the Union and Confederate Armies ... " And because it is a publication in the public domain, numerous academics and nonprofits have repeatedly scanned these ORs and posted them to their respective websites.

Here are but two such examples:

Please restore the Battle of Poison Spring text.

The vandalisation of my talk page by Doug Weller

I want to take this time to reply against the accusations made by User:Doug Weller. His problem with me is two-folded.

  1. He didn't like the fact that I asked a rhetorical question on two relevant talk pages
That's no problem as far as I'm concerned. He don't have to like it, he just don't have to threaten me while telling me so
  2. He hate the fact I listen to Rebel Media, and use them as a source for debating future edits of relevant pages
This is a problem, and making threats of blocking my rights to edit if I continue to use them as sources makes it even more of a problem. His idea by continue threatening me is not to make my editing experience go a lot better, but to ensure they goes down the drain, simply because I don't hold the "correct" opinions as viewed by him.

As for my contact with User:Emeraude, which the previously mentioned person also threatened me for, we had already, as far as I'm concerned, parted as equals, with no further bad feelings between us. His overreactions was therefore uncalled for and only done with the intent to do further damage to my talk page and my reputation among the staff of Wikipedia.

I hope that by clearing up these issues, no further damage will be done

--Koppadasao (talk) 13:16, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

no, you are using various article talk pages as forums. Doug’s warnings are entirely valid and are not vandalism. You need to stop accusing him of the things above, because if you keep casting aspersions you will end up blocked. Ealdgyth - Talk 13:24, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

help?

I have been working with a group of editors to completely rewrite and improve the article on the Women's liberation movement. This is in-effect the 50-year anniversary of its take-off propelled by the student protests in 1968 (yes, some groups started before but it took off in '68). We would like to submit it for GA, but are doing the final tweaks. I'd like to line up a reviewer before we submit it, as my files seem to languish there and we want someone who will do a thorough review, not a rubber stamp.

I think it is important that the same reviewer tackle the entirety of the subject, which means reviewing 5 articles. To show the breadth of the movement, we broke it up into a main article and the four continents on which it flourished. In speaking with Montanabw, she suggested you might take on the task, as she is swamped in real life. Would you be interested in reviewing the articles for us? (as a side note, do you know anyone fluent in Spanish who could review a nomination which has been pending since September 2017?) Thank you for any help or insight you can give. SusunW (talk) 13:20, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I'm almost as swamped as Montanabw... I just can't commit to something like this. Sorry. Ealdgyth - Talk 13:27, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I will try someone else. SusunW (talk) 13:32, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in June. This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team will build
    the talk page
    .
  • There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
  • It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.

Arbitration

  • A recent technical issue with the Arbitration Committee's spam filter inadvertently caused all messages sent to the committee through Wikipedia (i.e. Special:EmailUser/Arbitration Committee) to be discarded. If you attempted to send an email to the Arbitration Committee via Wikipedia between May 16 and May 31, your message was not received and you are encouraged to resend it. Messages sent outside of these dates or directly to the Arbitration Committee email address were not affected by this issue.

Short descriptions

Hi Ealdgyth, Thanks for adding short descriptions, it is a huge task and will take a long time, so more contributors are most welcome. Can I try to persuade you to use the template {{short description}} which includes the magic word, instead of the bare magic word. The reason is twofold.

  1. The template adds a maintenance category and makes it easier to find the articles which have a short description, and
  2. The template allows the short description to be made visible using css, which allows those who use the css to identify cases where there are more than one short description in an article, and correct this where appropriate. Cheers, · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 19:15, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
I have found another reason. Galobtter's short description editing tool does not work for bare magic words. It is necessary to open the whole document and search for the magic word before it can be edited. This is not as important as the other reasons, as the tool could be modified with some effort, if there is consensus to use bare short descriptions. At present the use in templates is standard. Cheers, · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 07:21, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
Wouldn't it make more sense to have a bot change the magic word to the template? I'll use the template going forward, but... other people are going to do it so it will probably need to be fixed continuously. Ealdgyth - Talk 14:16, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, That will be fine. Cleaning up a few bare magic words is not a big problem. I will convert them if I run into them, which may be more often than I originally expected, as you have added them to some rather interesting articles. At some stage someone will run a bot to fix the rest. Cheers, · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 11:57, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

RE - comment at AE - what can I do better?

Re this comment - I've been attracting alot of "heat" in trying to clean up the SPS use in the field (and I've mainly stuck to the really poor ones) - I haven't introduced any self-published work (and the lowest standard of source I've used is newspaper coverage - and that for contemporary stuff (e.g. coverage of 2000s and beyond)). Getting to the point, I am discouraged/concerned by your observation that there is little incentive for non-involved editors or admins to wade into this to give opinions, because the tone of editing by those most heavily involved is so poor. - because un-involved opinion is exactly what is needed here. Without naming particular editor(s) - I usually challenge a source - and then face a fairly automatic "it's good" response (even on sources I do not think should even be up for discussion - e.g. Mark Paul) - and the only way to get out of that is 3rd party input. I have posted on noticeboards a few times, and I have launched a couple of rfCs on this (which have elicited outside input) - but I'm also trying not to overload the system too much (e.g. Anna Poray - which I've challenged, had general agreement on BLP/n (which in retrospect perhaps wasn't the best venue even though this did overlap with BDP/BLP policy) - and then after waiting for BLP/n to close (so - a couple of weeks) - faced a challenge on removing it - and now I'm mulling whether a RfC would the right thing to do and where). RS/n seems a bit "dead" for many of these topics (though it is livelier on RfCs) - some threads there go unanswered or have 1-2 editors commenting (also on topics well away from Poland related issues - it seems that if it isn't related to American politics or the Daily Mail that it is often quite dead). I have not been making personal attacks, at least as far as I'm aware. AE seems to be ill equipped to deal with inappropriate use of sources (looking at it as a content issue).

Cutting short on the TLDR above - what do you suggest I do better? What's the best process here?Icewhiz (talk) 13:06, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

You're doing the process right, you just need to stop with the hyperbole. Calling for a rev-delete at Talk:Collaboration in German-occupied Poland#RfC: Jewish Baiting Techniques was hyperbole - it's very unlikely such would be rev-deleted, which is reserved for grossly offensive material. Try to avoid labeling everything "fringe". Stick to "self-published" and you'll have less concerns. Be absolutely impeccable in your behavior, even when it seems like others are misbehaving. Be careful of personalizing disputes. Be very very careful of the various 1RR and "consensus required" arbitration enforcement provisions. Stick to the sources at hand, argue from them. When possible, replace the SPS sources with better ones rather than deleting the information. And this one applies to everyone editing in the area - read the freaking sources rather than doing Google searches for information/source/citations. The actual sources need to be mastered by reading widely and digesting them. Everyone in this area needs to read a lot more and google a lot less. Ealdgyth - Talk 13:14, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
Further (and again, this applies to everyone in the area) - when another editor reverts you - take the discussion to talk and try to see a way to compromise by restating what YOU think you mean and ask the others what would make a good compromise. Ealdgyth - Talk 13:16, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
