RE Low German

Exactly. It had been there for darn near a year and edits around it prove that no one had a problem with it. The table was considered useful. I also had looked at your talk page before reverting it. Botocudo

I've scanned the history

Botocudo
for still active editors which contributed there. I'm more than a bit dissatisfied with ethnology articles which are mostly based on the 1911 Britannica. And that article hasn't seen much improvement since the article start which was neary 1:1 the old Britannica article.

I voiced my concerns at WikiProject_Anthropology#Outdated_article, perhaps you have an idea how to proceed.

Thanks for giving the article another look. I didn't want to press you to bring it singlehandedly to Featured Article quality, mostly looking for second opinion. Do you have general idea what to do with such articles? I interpret your cleanup edits that you hope, the wiki principle will in the succeed in improving it. I'm always tempted to solve such problems with deletion (on German Wikipedia we will most likely delete the translation and re-start with stub). List of languages by number of native speakers

Re: Please look at the last part of the 2-10 million list. Given the way the last column shows signs of being corrupted (# 66 missing and something definately wrong near # 99), combined with the fact that such a list is bound to be controversial, and combined with the edit history which looks like a lot of fly-by-editors/vandals changing a few numbers here and there, my impression as a casual reader is that it seems likely that much more of the entire list may be corrupted as well. The article text states that the source of the entire list is SIL (which seems like a logical idea. It is always better to have one source - with all the flaws and errors it may contain - than combining 20 different lists and then arguing for months about which list has the best figure for language X). However, I felt more inclined to simply go to SIL's webpage and find the untampered list, rather than taking guesses at which parts of Wikipedia's list that may contain SIL's data and which that may not. Had the edit summary field been longer, I would have written that the entire list had to be crosschecked with SIL's original, adjusted to that effect where necessary and then locked down to avoid the casual fly-by vandals. North-South divide(s)

I think a disamb page is preferable to a straight redirect, which would inevitably be contentious. One problem is that the

Islamophobia, acts of

As the section covers Islamophobia acts I'm suggesting that opinions, opinion polling, or press releases should not be there. The Baden-Württemberg test, as I understand it (and based on my limited German) covers anyone from an OIC country, Muslim or not.

I'm concerned that real examples of Islamophobia are getting hidden and as such are degraded in importance.

Good question. When you've given a user their last warning, the next time something happens, you should take it to the
ANI page. That's where you post incidents that administrators need to handle.

Hello. I think it does take a bit longer when it is a redirect but, as far as I can tell, the difference in time is not very significant. Fur

Hi - I looked at the change in Fur article. People object to the use of certain traps because they say they are cruel. That's not a controversy about clothing, per se, but about animal cruelty whether or not the trapped animals are used for clothing. Similarly there are objections to the unintended animals caught for the fur industry, which has nothing to do with clothing, but may be a question of endangered species. While you're right that clothing is the primary use of fur, the controversy is broader than that so putting it under clothing would require other controversy sections as appropriate. Another thing is that the figures add up to 8 billion people when there are not even 7 billion people on Earth. It kept being inverted by a user called Kim-Zhang-Hong but this is obviously a ridiculous addition. Im going to delete it. List of tallest buildings and structures in the world, etc. I bet theres dozens of google sources with magazine lists of the top inventions. I also bet the article would get a lot of hits. I haven't actually taken a proper look at the list in a while; to be honest, nowadays I'm a bit embarassed by it. I used to believe that Rastafarianism (definitely "R" instead of "P") was initially created as a parody religion, but I hadn't actually done any research on it, and due to lack of evidence it eventually slipped my mind (in fact, I hadn't thought about it for a long time until you mentioned it). Since it isn't a view I hold anymore, do you think I should edit the list? I rarely ever touch it because I find it a bit obnoxious to look at. Never mind, I just edited it. We are having major issues with user User talk:WKTU who is very obviously biased and is most likely a Sunni trying to overrepresent Sunni proportions. He is also relentless as you can see in Islam , Talk:Islam (bottom page), and Sunni Islam. Ancient

Actually, "ancient" is often used for people and things that are still extant and go back a ways. In this case, substituting something specific for the generic "ancient" is good... assuming readers know that Dharmic is an ancient religion, as are Judaism, Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Confucionism, etc. The giveaway is saying "is an ancient religion" vs. "was an ancient religion". ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 04:25, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Austronesian languages

Austronesian languages does not belong in a category for German loanwords. It is an inappropriate addition since the article isn't about German loanwords, nor does it contain any German loanwords. Categories for are useful information to readers. Placing Austronesian in that category is not useful since a reader will search in vain for any reference to German. Proper names are not considered to be loanwords in a linguistic context. Otherwise, "Berlin", "Hamburg", "Leipzig", etc. would all have to be considered loanwords. Regarding the "accusations of xenophobia" section in this article, I think this version ought to be a comromise.[2] It mentions the accusations and the accusers, while also gives the other side of the story, ie. the party's rebuttal and the defence of the party by other Finnish politicians of competing parties. The fact that the party has been compared with other nationalist parties is already mentioned in the lead to the article, so repetition isn't necessary. The article "Resurgence of racism in Europe 2008-2011", to which your version had a red link, has been deleted from Wikipedia, as it was not found to correspond to Wikipedia's principles.[3] The article was found biased and its writer used synthesis and original research. The same applies to the sources used on that section referencing to this "resurgence": it is synthesis and biased. And anyway it should be obvious that we should not red link to deleted articles or remove their content to other articles. There is no need for a separate section: you had put it under 'policies' and accusations of others are certainly not policies. Accusations of xenophobia are related to immigration stances, so the logical place is under 'immigration'. Language-population update projectHi. The 18th edition of Ethnologue just came out, and if we divide up our language articles among us, it won't take long to update them. I would appreciate it if you could help out, even if it's just a few articles (5,000 articles is a lot for just me), but I won't be insulted if you delete this request.

A largely complete list of articles to be updated is at Category:Language articles citing Ethnologue 17. The priority articles are in Category:Language articles with old Ethnologue 17 speaker data. These are the 10% that have population figures at least 25 years old.

Probably 90% of the time, Ethnologue has not changed their figures between the 17th and 18th editions, so all we need to do is change "e17" to "e18" in the reference (ref) field of the language info box. That will change the citation for the artcle to the current edition. Please put the data in the proper fields, or the info box will flag it as needing editorial review. The other relevant fields are "speakers" (the number of native speakers in all countries), "date" (the date of the reference or census that Ethnologue uses, not the date of Ethnologue!), and sometimes "speakers2". Our convention has been to enter e.g. "1990 census" when a census is used, as other data can be much older than the publication date. Sometimes a citation elsewhere in the article depends on the e17 entry, in which case you will need to change "name=e17" to "name=e18" in the reference tag (assuming the 18th edition still supports the cited claim).

Remember, we want the *total* number of native speakers, which is often not the first figure given by Ethnologue. Sometimes the data is too incompatible to add together (e.g. a figure from the 1950s for one country, and a figure from 2006 for another), in which case it should be presented that way. That's one use for the "speakers2" field. If you're not sure, just ask, or skip that article.

Data should not be displayed with more than two, or at most three, significant figures. Sometimes it should be rounded off to just one significant figure, e.g. when some of the component data used by Ethnologue has been approximated with one figure (200,000, 3 million, etc.) and the other data has greater precision. For example, a figure of 200,000 for one country and 4,230 for another is really just 200,000 in total, as the 4,230 is within the margin of rounding off in the 200,000. If you want to retain the spurious precision of the number in Ethnologue, you might want to use the {{

sigfig
}} template. (First parameter in this template is for the data, second is for the number of figures to round it off to.)

Dates will often need to be a range of all the country data in the Ethnologue article. When entering the date range, I often ignore dates from countries that have only a few percent of the population, as often 10% or so of the population isn't even separately listed by Ethnologue and so is undated anyway.

If Ethnologue does not provide a date for the bulk of the population, just enter "no date" in the date field. But if the population figure is undated, and hasn't changed between the 17th & 18th editions of Ethnologue, please leave the ref field set to "e17", and maybe add a comment to keep it so that other editors don't change it. In cases like this, the edition of Ethnologue that the data first appeared in may be our only indication of how old it is. We still cite the 14th edition in a couple dozen articles, so our readers can see that the data is getting old.

The articles in the categories linked above are over 90% of the job. There are probably also articles that do not currently cite Ethnologue, but which we might want to update with the 18th edition. I'll need to generate another category to capture those, probably after most of the Ethnologue 17 citations are taken care of.
