I have replaced your image at Image:Transmission_screenshot_ubuntu.png with one using the GNOME default Clearlooks theme. I think that having the default Ubuntu theme is wrong as Ubuntu != FOSS. Hi, first of all, sorry for the very late reply, regarding Lego Digital Designer: I simply downloaded and installed the software! :) I had no problem at all, I installed it on Windows XP, Vista RTM, and Vista SP1, it worked fine everytime, it must be a problem with your software or Hardware... Note that you need Quick Time installed... Can you at least install it? you can try to extract the files from the installer with WinRAR, since the setup.exe is just a self-extracting zip file... and then try to install it... maybe some files of your windows installation are corrupted or something... You can also try a portable version I made (with VMware Project North Star), it should work on Vista RTM or SP1, here is the link:

Thanks! Actually, i feel kinda bad now... I had tried LDD LeoCad and other types of programs and NONE would work. I gave up and reset my computer for a service pack and it worked! All of them!!! I coudn't help but notice your screenshot of the program running under Wine. Why bother when there are numerous native X-Window/Linux tools that do the same thing?

I searched for an image of DVD Decrypter running under wine and have found none on wikipedia... maybe you are referring to the image of ImgBurn, right? I included simply to show that the program can run under wine... I agree that there may be many other native alternatives for Linux, and maybe even better, but like I said, it was just to show the program running on Linux... Hi. Just an FYI - when adding stuff to the Fedora page (this is probably applicable to other pages), please can you see whether the content will fit into existing sections, rather than creating new sections with just one paragraph. In the case of your recent Fedora edit, the Live USB content would have fitted well into the Distribution section (which I have now merged it into). I have no problem to keep/create an article about them on wikipedia, but in this case I can't do much... Even if I improved the article, it would still not be notable, and would be likely deleted... It as been around for a while under the name Thinstall, and is the #1 software used to make portable apps (for now, of course this may change). Thanks mate, to be honest I delayed my reply to test that, but I still haven't done it! Anyway, I learned about strace, which is always a good thing! Regarding "my problem", I discovered it is a tricky one, I think alsa saves the mute option in a different way, if we have different hardware. (example: I boot a Live USB on a PC and mute it, save my session, and then boot on another PC with another soundcard, and then... I have soud again!). Anyway, thanks a lot mate, I appreciate it! We only add a differential to a title "(song)" if there is something else called "There's No One as Irish as Barack O'Bama" from which we need to differentiate it. I did that because I dislike titles like "There's No One as Irish as Barack O'Bama", they seem to imply something, it makes them look like a statement (if we do not read the article). Even the other day I saw an article named "Sexo Explícito" (translated to: "explicit sex") on the Portuguese wikipedia, and I was really thinking it was about sex, but in reality, it was about a band! (I really dislike that naming policy!). Just imagine if we had an article called "Obama is a gay nigger from outer space"? Just because of some "notable"/popular song with that name? that would suck. Anyway, If I have to explain, then probably you miss my point. Anyway, I will not fight that, nor revert, rest assured. I just felt I had to do that, even knowing someone would not like my page-move. Hi Mendaliv, you touch a really sensite point with this... you say "unreasonably high resolution" and I say "normal resolution" and reply with "why unreasonably low resolution"? You know, I really oppose the use of low-res images by default, especially in the case of screenshots of software that is not art (unlike games, etc...), here is my opinion why low-res images are bad:

• The page you pointed out is a mere guideline, not policy (there is a difference!)
• Re-sizing images to low-res based only on guidelines (or even if that was policy) is a bad idea: "wiki-rules" are just made to either: comply with the law OR avoid legal actions OR respect the copyright owners OR make the content free (as in libre) (see more explaining bellow)
• Doing that to comply with the law in not needed: we have fair use, and besides, a screenshot is only "a small portion of the work" (so we are complying with fair use!) (in fact, a screenshot is not even part of the work, since the point of software is to be used, and a screenshot is 100% useless for that!)
• Even if we had no fair use law, I doubt most copyright owners would care there is a screenshot on wikipedia, in fact, I bet many of them like that! So I doubt they sue, and even if they sued, a screenshot can be taken down anytime or re-sized down anytime
• "Re-size it to respect copyright owners"- Like I said before, they probably like their screenshots here, besides, anyone can take screenshots of software and use them is a bad way - so being on wikipedia does not do any harm (remember, screens are under fair use, so they are legal!)
• "Wikipedia is about "Free"/libre conten so lets re-size them down": I doubt making them smaller makes them more free...
• Low-res is bad for readers, since it is harder to see the images and/or read what says there (not to mention people with reading/visual problems)
• Low-res is bad for wikipedia: It decreases quality of wikipedia

I bet you strongly disagree with me, but this is my personal opinion, I could lie about that, but I will not do that... Terminal emulator

Good call, I say. I know that at least one of them is a genuine product but if no-one can be bothered to make the effort to show how it is notable in the context of Wikipedia then it's right that it should go - we don't want a bunch of unreferenced, non-notable, unverified redlinks, especially where it's going to be a magnet for product advertisements.

Hi, cool. I'm not really bothered about notability, however, the article already mentioned a bunch of terminals (some of them even obsolete/discontinued), and I just decided to do some clean up. Some of them could be even made up (google showed up nothing useful and without refs it's hard to be sure). If you want to re-add some of them, feel free to do it (however, I recommend to at least start a stub, or provide at least an external link so we can have minimum verifiability). Cheers. why nominate the image for deletion?!? If it is not approppriate to have it on those articles why not just remove it from them or even replace it with another? Why not take a more relaxed stance on so-called "non-free images"...? it would be better for everybody, I tell you. Also, I used this image because it is probably the most popular Virtual Machine software, and using another one just because of the licensing would (maybe) be biased towards "FOSS". Yeah. Our fair use policy is shaky. That's why we have a so-called "bias" towards FOSS, since its the only way we can legally represent most concepts on Wikipedia. When I was researching MS anti-virus software today, I stumbled across the malware article, because of the article title. Then I found out that the related articles were a disorganized, poorly cross-linked jumble. So I took quite a bit of time to research and try to organize good inter-linking. Now, you have gone many places and removed the links to that one article, because you think the content is about a "bad" thing that you would like to suppress. Well. What are we about here? It still seems to me that the content is "obviously" relevant. Anyone trying to learn about this subject might want to know about that "bad" content.

We are not discussing a "link to malware" here -- we are discussing a link to an article about it! And there is nothing at all devious about the link -- it says dead plain what it is about, and no one will ever be bothered to go to that article unless they want to know more about that kind of thing.

Now the

MS Antivirus

article seems to be missing any link to:

• Microsoft Anti-Virus
  (MSAV) antivirus program for MS-DOS 1993-1996

which is crazy, since the articles have almost exactly the same titles. And there is some kind of invisible cloak on the article protecting it from edits by us unwashed anons. Please fix this article. (I don't care that the content is about something 15 years old. This is supposed to be an encyclopedia. History belongs here more than current tech content, actually.)

PS: A detailed history of MS-DOS (listing each version, when) seems to be missing in WP. Someone should fix that. Even if I spend hours a day trying to fix WP, I still can't catch up...

The reference is not reliable and does not justify the statement. Also, it is entirely redundant because a link to the article was given, so the external link should not be added. First of all, I removed that section just now, since that information seems to be outdated (the distro now is not even called "Super Ubuntu", but "Super OS"). I simply added the link to serve as a reference for the fact that Zero Install was included in Super Ubuntu. I slightly disagree it was not a good source, since it was the official page of Super Ubuntu, so who could provide more reliable info about the software included in Super Ubuntu than the developers themselves? Of course more reliable sources would be better, but I think that one was not so inappropriate. And regarding being redundant, yes, a link to the Super Ubuntu article was given, but as you probably know, wikipedia is not considered a reliable source. If the information was still current, I would not care if the link was removed, but I am just saying all this because at the time I considered the link very appropriate. Another issue would be if "Super Ubuntu" is considered "notable enough" to have that information on the Zero Install article, now this would be a good reason to remove that section altogether, but like I said, if the info was there, I considered the reference appropriate. If we read "the only operating system to include X is Y[ref1]" then ref1 should support the assertion (a quick look made me think it did not; it might support "X is in Y"). Also, given that Y is a link to a Wikipedia article, it is not correct to also give a direct link to the web site for Y: it's not required; it's not encyclopedic; it's unnecessarily hard to maintain (external links in two locations); it is unnecessarily promotional. Your point about a WP article not being a reference is of course correct, but that is a different issue. Please ease up. I posted a query on the two noticeboard not to label you a spammer, but to determine via expert opinion whether the links were good or problematic. I waited for a response on both boards before removing the links. Once I was sure that the links were not reliable sources and were viewed by our spam project as promotional, I removed the links. I believe this was the right thing to do. I also find the images very questionable, but I've not removed them yet as I don't think there is enough feedback on that. One thing that is really really questionable is that hacktolive.org claims they have released many of the screenshots into the public domain. But they are not legally capable of doing this on screenshots that have additional copyright holders, such as Microsoft. All the copyright holders would have to release the image for it to be public domain. I am sure you took their release in good faith, but I believe both they and you are mistaken about the appropriateness of use on articles other than the primary piece of software shown. I didn't reduce them as I found on your talk page a statement that you would revert any attempt to make them low-resolution and saw that you had already done so on at least one occasion. Okay?

Regarding the images, I ask you to please read my talk page again, I said "I will also not fight it and/or revert it" (the low resolution images). Regarding the images... In his/hers case I would not "threaten" you... but it does not seems like a bad-faith action. I think a simple warning first would be enough, and then only take other actions if needed (in fact, like you probably remember, I simply gave you a little warning in the past when I feared minor disruptive actions). I am sorry, but I can't help much, I am not an admin and I am not very familiar with wikipedia politics. In your case I would ask advise at the wikipedia helpdesk, if needed. Trigence

Trigence was speedy deleted in 2007. You recreated it as a redirect to the dab page virtualization in 2008. Why? Nothing links to it. It's the previous name of a commercial company. The article is not about the Helios Project, and links and explanations of what they do may be considered promotion, especially with the non-notable refs. Look, It's not about being a good or a bad cause, it was simply to help establish notability of the distro, since we all know deletion is very common on wikipedia. I have researched and found Ken Starks (probably the "director" of the helios project) to be somewhat notable in the Linux comunnity, having participated in talks with Bruce Perens, sponsored the Linux Car, writing news to popular websites like [ http://www.linuxtoday.com/Linux today] and lwn. I really don't have interest in mentioning that project "per se", the only point was to list the groups that use the OS. Ubuntu 10.10.10 & The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

You reverted my edit regarding the marketing of Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat (alias 10.10.10) and its association with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. This is an intentional association inspired by Mark Shuttleworth himself, which he has mentioned numerous times in presentations and in other media. I am sorry, I didn't put in a citation before, because I (wrongly) assumed that this is already well known. Just because Canonical may also have said that they want a "perfect 10" in 10.10, does not prevent them from also making an association with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Just because A is true, does not mean B is not true. From a marketing viewpoint, this is appealing to a demographic who are fans of h2g2 and are also likely to be geeks receptive to an alternate open source operating system. It is mainly for this reason (not the "perfect 10" punch line) that they have pulled back the release date three weeks to get it out on (20)10-10-10.

You will see that I have re-added the text, albeit with a citation of what I suspect is Mark Shuttleworth's first publication of his thinking on linking the next release to h2g2. When I read that paragraph it just seemed a hoax to me, I tried to find sources, but at the time could not find anything, so I just assumed it was some sort of joke, I also vaguely remember looking at the history and notice that info was added by an IP/anonymous, but I think that is not correct and I not have not looked properly. My apologies for removing the content, like I said, I "jumped the gun" assuming it was a hoax, also due to the lack of any sources, and acting in "good-faith". comic book illustrations

Hi there,

I noticed you added illustrations to the Tintin article(s). I'm planning to rework articles related to the "Spike and Suzy" comics, and I was wondering how to go about possibly adding similar illustrations. I'm thinking here about the copyright issues and all. What sort of limitations and issues did you have to take into account to make sure that the illustrations can stay on there? Small resolution, the right disclaimers on the picture page, adding pictures for just a small subset of the characters(not overdoing)? Did you make and process the scans yourself?

Sorry for the extremely late reply (I have been away from wikipedia). The main problem is not the law per se, but the fact that some people on wikipedia are extremely hostile to content not considered "free". Yeah, you seem to already know the basics, the disclaimers/tags are the most important ones, otherwise the images will be automatically deleted. Adding pictures to all characters would probably not be a problem from a legal point of view, but again, some extremists will fight to have few images. Regarding the small resolution, I would not worry about that, since a lower resolution image can be uploaded at any time to satisfy legal requirements (or satisfy the extremists), in fact, I always upload at the maximum resolution possible, what usually happens is that bots and/or extemists upload lower-resolution images, but images are usually (never?) deleted simply because they are hig-res. "So, please do not remove well-sourced contents from the article" - I don't consider that well sourced: most of the time licenses are not easy to understand (even for lawyers!), and the only source is the license itself, not a commentary by some well known lawyer or any other reputable source/publication.

I would also hardly call it "personal feelings", that statement was simply unsourced speculation (in addition, it was something that did not make sense, given the current fight Microsoft has endured against malware, in particular by giving free anti-virus and free malware-removal tools like these). I see you were/are OK with removing the part about being "used for malware development" from the article, and that was my main problem with the statement. I have re-worded the article slightly, and I am happy with the current state, if you disagree with my changes feel free to voice your opinion and/or make further changes. Hello. I added the sections to the Acronis True Image article, which you removed. Why do you say 'user reviews are not considered reliable sources', when the very first line in the History section reads "True Image has a wizard driven interface, and received positive and mixed reviews from both editors and users alike." My additions went into more depth, and reflected more recent changes reflecting the dramatic decline of the software's quality in recent versions. The reference to positive reviews dates back to 5/27/08, when the software was in its prime, and the reference to mixed reviews was added 1/26/10, in response to dropping quality. That article states "Giving due weight and avoiding giving undue weight means that articles should not give minority views as much of or as detailed a description as more widely held views... Wikipedia should not present a dispute as if a view held by a small minority deserved as much attention overall as the majority view." Why do you place undue weight to an online magazine, which takes corporate sponsorship and advertising dollars, making it inherently vulnerable to produce biased reviews? More importantly, those editor reviews - while they may generally be held to a higher standard of journalistic rigor than average users, only represents the [likely biased] views of 1 or 2 editors. In contrast, 9 out of 15 download.com reviews (60%) in the past 4 months are 1 or 2 stars, and 8 of the 10 in the past 3 months (80%) are 1 or 2 stars. How is 80% not the majority view?

Amazon.com reveals something much more sobering: five perfect, 5-star reviews on Amazon.com within 3 days, shortly following a string of 1 star negative reviews. Then again, 10 perfect reviews in a row following some terrible 1 star reviews. As a matter of fact, 20 of 46 user reviews were 1 star. 22 of 46 are 5 stars. Only 5 reviews in the middle. How do you suppose 91% of reviews are all either perfect or abysmal? Half are perfect, half are terrible, and almost none in the middle. How does it happen that these reviews violate every example of statistics in the natural world?

Most of the negative reviews on Amazon came out immediately following the release of the latest version of the application. Then, all of a sudden, a string of perfect reviews which conveniently balances things out. Then another bunch of very negative reviews, and another string of perfect ones. Like clockwork. The deck is stacked, and Acronis is doing the stacking.

Amazon is the first place most users go to review products; it's the second result in a Google search for 'Acronis True Image 2012 review'. So it's no surprise that's where the ballots are stuffed the most. Not to be dramatic, but in communist and fascist countries, the government uses censorship, propaganda, and fear to control the dissemination of information and public discourse. In a capitalist nation, it's the organizations with the money who control the flow of information and public discourse. User reviews are supposed to give democratic control back to the users, who are not being influenced by the company to offer a positive review. Acronis obviously had fake reviews planted to boost their ratings, because they can afford to. That's what they call damage control in the PR world. The facts on several sites point to this (the reviews on download.com are also 1 star or 5 and almost none in between). And several reviewers noticed it and pointed it out. I am not presenting personal opinions, only the facts, and the majority view.

If wikipedia is supposed to be transparent, these facts should absolutely be reflected in the wiki page so users or potential users are informed. I'm happy to discuss the deleted content, but I strongly feel the information should be in there.

I am trying to publish the truth. Why do user reviews hold no weight? And why do editor reviews carry more weight?? This is baffling to me. The vast majority view is that this product has serious flaws, across three different independent sites. On amazon.com and download.com, the two most important sites which carry the most weight, Acronis has blatantly circumvented a fair review process through deceptive & unscrupulous practices (generating false 5 star reviews). I have provided evidence and some reviewers have come to the same conclusion. Deception and obfuscation, and preventing open, honest discourse doesn't sit well with me. The editor reviews on these sites are bought and paid for; the sites have ads and coupons up for the products they are supposedly giving an unbiased view of. They are corporate entities, with zero transparency and zero accountability to report the truth (ie, an honest review). How can the majority of users be giving 1 star reviews one after another but ALL the editor reviews on these sites are glowing and enthusiastic? Putting undue weight on the opinions of a few, who have no regulation or transparency, and who openly accept donations & sponsorship from the companies they review, is just absurd.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I didn't see the article discussion page until now. It started as a reponse to SF007's deletion of my edits. What makes editor reviews a reliable source? Simply having the funds and forum to pay someone to publish it? Why is a corporate entity which takes sponsorships more reliable [and less biased] than user reviews? Anyone can write a user review, but only editors hired by download.com, or amazon or pc world may publish their viewpoints. At the end of the day, it's just someone's opinion. And editor reviews are sponsored by other companies like Acronis, and have an agenda. There are REBATES for Acronis True Image Home on several review sites at the bottom of the review, provided by Acronis! How on earth are those reviews inherently trustworthy?

This problem of lack of transparency is precisely what Wikipedia is supposed to be about. Editor reviews for the product have been overwhelmingly positive, but user reviews have been almost exclusively negative as of 2011, not counting the preponderance of planted 5-star reviews which serve to obfuscate the true rating. I will concede that it's not the place for independent research or righting wrongs; in that case, what's the right way to present the true majority opinion (which would be obvious to anyone who reads my assertions & looks at the evidence). Is wikipedia just a forum to smile and enable media corporations with the money and resources to control the dissemination of information to continue to do so? This is one tiny instance that's endemic of a greater problem. Gary, I completely agree there are problems with companies advertising/backing media organizations, and it certainly is true they are "opinions", but at least it is supposed to be an opinion subject to journalistic ethics/standards, the rule of law and a free market (at least in theory). It certainly is far from perfect to use reviews from media outlets like CNET/Softpedia/Engadget/etc, but the truth is that there is simply nothing better or with higher standards. This is the standard practice on wikipedia, for good and for worse. Freeware definition

Hello, I am sorry, but I do not understand some of your edits in the Freeware article.

1. You removed the claim, that "free software" is only sometimes called as "freeware". What was wrong with the removed word - sometimes? I didn't find any reference that justify your edit. This is the previous version of the sentence: "The term "freeware" is commonly used for closed source or proprietary software, but since the term is related to price (and not clearly to issues like license terms, availability of the source code or copyright status) it is sometimes also applied to free software/open-source software"

2. You added the following reference from PC Mag to the beforementioned quoted sentence: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2361876,00.asp . Please, could you explain, how is this reference related to that sentence? I quote from that reference: "The Best Free Software of 2010" ... "By free, we mean you don't pay a dime except for what it costs to download and install the software." As I can understand, this reference is not about freeware and the term "freeware" is not used there at all. I think, this reference is inappropriate.

3. You added the following reference from the cnet website: [9] titled "Top Freeware in Downloads". On that website is a link to a sub-page about VLC Media Player and it states: "VLC Media Player is a longtime open-source favorite, and the latest version offers fixes and feature enhancements for the Mac version that make it a must download." ... "Price: Free" . The term "freeware" is not used at all on that VLC sub-page. Also, there is a Firefox article and there is also no mention about "freeware" [10]. As I can understand, cnet has also no clear definition for freeware and the term is used only sometimes and in a chaotic way.

4. I really do not understand, how could you write this sentence: According to the FSF, "Freeware is a loosely defined category and it has no clear accepted definition". Please, could you add any reference that proves your claim? I am really disappointed of Wikipedia editors when I see these "low-class edits".

5. Why you moved the beforementioned sentence about "loosely defined category" from the first paragraph in the Freeware article? As we can also see from your references, the term freeware is a very loosely defined category. 1. 1 I removed "sometimes", because previous sentences (and also the wording you placed in the article) seem to imply something like "Well, those programs are not really freeware, but people sometimes call them that". I may leave that for now, but I consider the current wording less-than-ideal.
2. 2 Well, it is about freeware in the sense of the concept of gratis software, but I see your point as it does not mention "freeware". No objections to that removal.
3. 3 "As I can understand, cnet has also no clear definition for freeware and the term is used only sometimes and in a chaotic way." - Well, I have to strongly disagree with that, I'm pretty sure their definition of freeware goes something like "software you can (legally) download, free-of-charge", as far as I know, they have used that definition consistently. Regarding Firefox/VLC not being directly labeled "freeware", well, they are on the "freeware" category aren't they? it is reasonable to assume CNET considers them "freeware". Regarding the word not being used on their respective pages, that is because that is not necessary. The price is listed as free and a more specific category is "open-source" (which, for most people already implies being gratis like 99% of the time). An analogy is like calling a square a "rectangle" and then someone said "Well, people only call them rectangles sometimes" - That is true, because the word "square" is more specific. But a square is still a rectangle.
4. 4 The FSF says "The term “freeware” has no clear accepted definition" As I explained in the topic above, "freeware" seems pretty well defined as "free software" / "gratis software" It is also very clear the FSF is highly biased on the subject and does not want their "brand" of "free software" to be "contaminated" by alternative wordings. It is also interesting to note their obvious bias when they state that freeware is "commonly used for packages which permit redistribution but not modification (and their source code is not available)" yet, they conveniently don't use the same wording for their definition of "free software" (which would be factual), but instead choose the phrase "proprietary software companies typically use the term “free software” to refer to price", (conveniently) ignoring the general population also uses that wording in the same sense.
5. 5 I was actually going to remove that entire phrase as it comes from a clearly biased source, but then I decided to attibute the claim to the FSF and still keep it. "As we can also see from your references, the term freeware is a very loosely defined category" - As I said, I actually see the contrary, thats why I think we are giving undue wegith to put FSF's opinion in the intro.

I think that download servers use the term "freeware" in slightly different ways and the term is often used partly incorrectly, only for its popularity and for making the download webs easier to understand and use.

My messing up the interwikis on Apple

Thank you for correcting the interwikis! I have absolutely no idea how that happened: I hadn't touched them at all, and I only noticed when I saw your edit. Do you happen to have any idea of the cause? I am on XP, Firefox 8. In the preview, the interwikis looked fine, and they look fine in my version in the History too; only when I click them do I see they lead to a wrong address. Hey, no problem. I was actually going to tell you about it. I assumed you used some external text editor without support for those encodings. The root of the problem is likely some software you used that does not support those encodings... maybe XP itself? (although I just did some tests on a XP PC and seemed to work) Firefox 8 seems recent enough to support those encodings... If you run some copy-paste tests maybe you can detect the issue... you can also try another browser like Google Chrome or Opera...
