Requested moves of six country–NATO relations articles at centralized discussion

There is a requested move discussion at Talk:Croatia–NATO relations#Requested move 4 April 2023 that may be of interest to members of this WikiProject. While they are all listed on the project page under requested moves, and it might be more relevant for WikiProject NATO, I thought it was worth a mention as it covers multiple articles. Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Please see the new draft,
Draft:International relations of Wales

Please see this new draft which I have made. There has been some discussion about the scope of the article and the experience of this WikiProject could be utilised.

On a second note, I would like to suggest more clearly defined article naming precedence for non-sovereign countries like Wales, Scotland, Greenland etc. They all have difference of course, but perhaps a precedence of International relations of... would suit? Could we add this to the WikiProject project page?

Thanks for your time. Titus Gold (talk) 13:45, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

Looks like there is a bit of a naming precedent for non-sovereign countries: the articles for
Foreign relations of Wales, matching the mostly followed precedent for non-sovereign countries, unless there is a reason not to. //Lollipoplollipoplollipop::talk

At risk of forking discussion elsewhere, I would point out that terms like "country" are easily equivocated on, or at east the term does not completely capture the rich range of difference in arrangements between each. Denmark administers Faroe and Greenland in a different manner from the UK, and significantly allows them to conduct foreign relations to make international treaties on areas that lie within the powers of their governments. They thus have treaties and FTAs and some diplomatic representation. Hong Kong and Macau are separate customs territories that again require treaties and play a role in the WTO etc. Niue acts as an independent state in foreign policy despite having a shared head of State with New Zealand and being New Zealand citizens etc. Titus Gold wants to write about the Foreign relations of Wales, but the UK is a unitary state that has devolved government with reserved powers. It is quasi federal but not federal. Wales cannot make international treaties, nor create diplomatic missions. What it does have is an international strategy, which is primarily about trade, tourism and raising the profile of Wales on the world stage. This is not foreign policy.
It would be an error to attempt to create a one size fits all title policy here. Moreover this is now the third place this question has been raised as it has already been discussed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Wales#Notification of a draft which has since been published Foreign relations of Wales, and now also on the article talk page. My suggestion is that this WikiProject should decline to assert a new precedent to attempt to resolve a content dispute on a different page. You are, of course, all welcome to discuss the issue on the draft article talk page. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 07:17, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

When is international migration defining

when is international migration defining? I have some theories here. My starting po8nts are I think that unless it is a clear move from x to y, it is better to call someone say a British emigrant and an immigrant to Greece, if they lived a year or more in Switzerland and Romania in the interim, than to try to put them in a British emigrant to Greece Category when the middle is fuzzy. I am not sure exactly how to determine when the middle becomes defining and when they are an expat and when an immigrant. If they lived in Switzerland 20 years and wrote 3 or their 7 published books during that time clearly, but most cases are less clear.John Pack Lambert (talk) 20:52, 18 June 2023 (UTC)

Rfc on Country Comparison charts/tables

The following discussion is an archived record of a request for comment. Please do not modify it. No further edits should be made to this discussion. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
There is consensus to remove country comparison charts from articles about international relations as a general principle on the basis of
WP:NOTSTATS. Comparison charts may be included on a case-by-case basis, but editors should err on the side of exclusion and discuss on the talk page of the article in question when unsure. Combefere Talk

Should we remove or keep country comparison charts/tables on bilateral relations articles?

An example being Russia–United States relations, which is the first section of the article after the lead. I am rather neutral on this issue, but I can see arguments for keeping and removing. While there is information that compares and contrasts information between both nations, it seems like it belongs more in like a world fact book and much of the information on there doesn't really seem to fit the overall topic of bilateral relations. Pinging LibStar and Lollipoplollipoplollipop who commented from a previous short discussion last year. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 20:59, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
I don't support country comparisons because I don't see how they are meaningful in terms of bilateral relations. One country being bigger in area than the other doesn't add value, or other aspects such as currency used or who the leader is. I support Wikicleanerman's statement seems like it belongs more in like a world fact book and much of the information on there doesn't really seem to fit the overall topic of bilateral relations.. LibStar (talk) 14:05, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
I support removing them. //Lollipoplollipoplollipop::talk 14:48, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
  • In general, these should be removed. They're a collection of randomly accrued stats. There are cases where country comparisons are useful, and these are when some comparison is commented upon by a few reliable sources that note its impact on some aspect of bilateral relations. However, these cases should produce information that is limited and specific, as well as in context. (Looking at the specific example of
WP:OR. The "Economic alliance" and "Military alliance" rows are nonsense.) CMD (talk

Here's three from France related articles, France–Germany relations, France–Spain relations, France–Russia relations. You have pretty much the same thing as the Russia-U.S. article. Are you saying that it should be kept on more important bilateral relations articles? --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 23:45, 12 June 2023 (UTC)

  • It should be an article-by-article decision. In some cases (see at the bottom of page Anglosphere), such comparisons seem to be just fine. In other cases (like Russia–Ukraine relations), the comparison is interesting and useful, but I would rather keep them as separate standalone list pages, with linking from other pages like "relations" and Russo-Ukrainian war. In other cases they better be removed. And so on. My very best wishes (talk) 22:26, 16 June 2023 (UTC)
  • Remove as a general rule. The reader is just one click away from finding this info in country articles or two clicks away from lists of countries by any conceivable attribute. The data are often not updated regularly thus misleading the reader. Alaexis¿question? 08:32, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
  • It is possible that in individual cases this information can be useful, but as a general rule, no--and I say this because I would like for us to have it as a general rule. Too many articles suffer from this typically overlinked and overfetishized material which often accretes--material with emblems and flags and overlinking, with randomly picked data, and often in the most disruptive and conspicuous of places, such as in this article. I'll add that in many of the articles, it was the work of an LTA operating a variety of IPs from Turkey. Drmies (talk) 16:17, 22 June 2023 (UTC)

Embassy of Country

I've been creating missing disambiguation pages, where several articles share a common prefix with different qualifiers but there's no dab. I've found several embassy prefixes such as

Embassy of Bolivia which redirects to List of diplomatic missions of Bolivia
, etc.

"Embassy of" titles lacking a page, with suggested redirect targets

Would these redirects be helpful? If not, should we create something else at these titles?

We do have one dab,

Embassy of Nigeria, but it is incomplete and should probably be replaced by a redirect to List of diplomatic missions of Nigeria. Certes (talk
