Hi Rcsprinter123, I wanted to apologize for yesterdays dramah, Seeing as we've never exactly gotten on with each other I shouldn't have nominated your page (nor Adams for that matter!), I was simply nominating bus related userpages..   • Tech News is trying to make reading the newsletter easier. The Recurrent item icon means the item is in the newsletter every week, but with new dates. The For technical readers icon means the item is mainly relevant for readers with technical knowledge. You can leave feedback on this change.
  • Timestamps in the protection log will now be in the user's timezone. Previously they would show Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). [10]

Problems

  • A problem with MediaWiki made some pages show no content on October 14. This has now been fixed. [11]
  • Some templates were misplaced in the Flow description bar. This could make it impossible to click on links. This will be fixed this week. [12]
  • The deployment of the new MediaWiki version was stopped on October 14. No new code was deployed for the rest of week. This meant planned changes did not happen. [13]

Administrator election reform RFC

I was saying 'all or nothing' in regard to the current administrator toolset (block, delete, protect etc) which require a competent individual able to operate all of those to be an effective administrator. The unbundled tools such as rollback don't need such a high level of trust, as they can be removed easily, whereas a desysopping is comparatively difficult. Block, delete and protect will probably always require trust from the community, with an RFA or similar process, but there are many more rights not fully unbundled (the list is at Special:ListGroupRights), and some are already granted to non-administrators in specific groups (which can be removed easily) - such as bots or template editors - but could be made more widely available. Even the rights that require RFA could be requested separately, so an editor who is only requesting the rights necessary for requested moves can apply for those, consistent with the principle of least privilege, and (as I've already mentioned in the discussion) an editor could have reported many vandals for administrator attention but fail RFA because of inclusionism or deletionism at AFD, is that editor not to be trusted with the right to block? Wikipedia administrators are not managers, and instead of 1,329 managers (many of whom are absent most of the time) with rights many will never need and no specific roles assigned to them, a business would probably employ specialists in different roles, each with the necessary privileges. 2015 GA Cup Wrap-Up

WikiProject Good Articles's 2015 GA Cup

The second-ever GA Cup is now over! The competition officially ended Thursday. Congrats to everyone who participated, and especially to our finalists.

The winner of the 2nd GA Cup is Zwerg Nase! He earned 408 points, over 100 points more than he earned in all previous rounds. He tied with our second-place winner, Sturmvogel 66 with 367 points, in number of articles reviewed (24), and they earned almost the same points for reviewing articles that were in the queue the longest (Zwerg with 322, Sturmvogel with 326). Basically, they tied in points, but what made the different for Zwerg was the advantage he had in reviewing longer articles. It seems that the rule change of earning more realistic points for longer articles made a difference. All of our contestants should be proud of the work they were able to accomplish through the GA Cup. Congrats to these worthy opponents!

Our third and fourth place winners, Johanna and Tomandjerry211, also ran a close race, with 167 points and 147 points respectfully. We had one withdrawal; we found it interesting that competitors dropped out in Round 2 and 3 as well. One of the original judges and co-creator of this competition, User:Dom497 stepped down as judge during Round 3; as stated previously, we will miss his input and wish him the best.

The judges were pleased with our results, even though fewer users competed this time compared to our inaugural competition. We recognize that this might be due to holding the competition during the summer months. We intend on looking more closely when we should conduct this contest, as well as other aspects of the GA Cup. We've set up a feedback page for everyone's input about how we should conduct the contest and what rule changes should be made. If you have any ideas about how we can improve things, please visit it and give us your input.

WikiCup 2015: The results

WikiCup 2015 is now in the books! Congrats to our finalists and winners, and to everyone who took part in this year's competition.

This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). All of his points were earned for an impressive 253 featured pictures and their associated bonus points (5060 and 1695, respectively). His entries constituted scans of currency from all over the world and scans of medallions awarded to participants of the U.S. Space program. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came in second place; she earned by far the most bonus points (4082), for 4 featured articles, 15 good articles, and 147 DYKs, mostly about in her field of expertise, natural science. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), a finalist every year since 2010, came in third, with 2379 points.

Our newcomer award, presented to the best-performing new competitor in the WikiCup, goes to United States Rationalobserver (submissions). Everyone should be very proud of the work they accomplished. We will announce our other award winners soon.

WP:RELIST you have re-listed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/John Bickley (UKIP)? The consensus seems pretty clear to me. AusLondonder (talk

There are a number of !votes to keep, with arguments to counter the deletion camp. I can see it is likely to be "delete" overall, but until it is absolutely determined, another week of discussion while relisted can't hurt. The more people have a chance to comment, the more accurate the consensus will be, right? Rcsprinter123 (babble) 20:46, 14 November 2015 (UTC)
There are a few keep votes, but either accusing us all of some huge anti-UKIP conspiracy, and/or citing the fact that the Labour candidate in a forthcoming election has a page so therefore his UKIP opponent should as well. I note that none of these people are arguing that any of the other candidates should have an article - only Bickley. This is not based on any policy at all. The majority of the delete votes have cited policy requirements of politician articles. I am puzzled as to why this discussion should have been relisted given there are other AfDs started at the same time with far fewer contributors that have still been closed in one direction or the other. PS. Also worth pointing out that delete/redirect outnumbers keep by about 3 to 1 with 14 votes cast.

Bot automation at Wikipedia:Today's articles for improvement

Over the past two weeks, there has been

bot automation to assist with maintenance of the Today's Articles for Improvement project. A bot has now been approved for trial
and will carry out the weekly duties. The bots first run will occur around 00:00, 22 November 2015 (UTC) (midnight on Sunday).

If you have been assisting any of the weekly maintenance tasks, please refrain from doing so this week. The bot needs to be tested and proven it can do the job, and it only gets one chance per week. The tasks will include:

Updating the

accomplishments and archiving selections is still done manually, along with daily tasks such as adding approved entries to the articles for improvement
page. These will become automated in the near future.

We hope the bot proves to serve well, and by carrying out the routine housekeeping tasks we can boost the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the project. MusikBot thanks you for your service in helping with the weekly tasks in the past, and for your cooperation during this trial period :)

Problems

  • On September 29 users' skin preferences were removed by mistake on small and medium-sized wikis. This changed preferences back to Vector. Restoring all data would cause even more problems. Affected users who want to have their preference changed back globally can ask for it as a comment on Phabricator task T119206 until December 21 2015. [45]
  • Some scheduled tasks were not working properly from September to recently. This meant some pages in the special pages namespace were not updated. It has now been fixed. [46]

Changes this week

  • Wikinews, Wikispecies, MediaWiki.org and Meta will be able to use information from Wikidata. [47][48]
  • There are no MediaWiki deployments this week (calendar).

Meetings

Future changes

  • Category watchlists are now available on test wikis and MediaWiki.org. The plan is to enable it on most wikis in January. [49]

  • Revision scoring will help to automatically identify bad-faith and good-faith edits. The point is to make it easier to block vandals and welcome newcomers. It currently supports Wikidata and 14 Wikipedias. [51]

Problems

  • Meta was not given access to information from Wikidata last week. This will happen later. [52]

Changes this week

  • You will be able to use wikilinks in Flow topic titles. [53]
  • IP users will have a toolbar with links to the user talk page and user contributions. Some Wikipedias already have this feature. [54]
  • You will be able to edit the graph size in the visual editor. You can either specify the size in the graph dialog or drag it to be the size you want it to be. [55]
  • It will be easier to write math in the visual editor if you don't know LaTeX. You can use symbol buttons instead. [56]
  • You will be able to use syntax highlighting when you write math with LaTeX in the visual editor. [57]
  • UploadWizard will look a bit different. [58]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 December. It will be on all Wikipedias from 10 December. (calendar).
  • New MediaWiki versions will now be on Catalan and Hebrew Wikipedia on Wednesdays. Other Wikipedias get the new MediaWiki version on Thursdays. [59]

WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge,

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. Thanks for your input on that GAN. I have decided to close it as not listed as I feel the situation there is problematic for several reasons, including that the article itself does not meet GA criteria. A note on your nomination. Anyone can nominate an article they feel meets the GA criteria, and I support that principle, and have taken on board GANs even from banned or blocked users. My view is it is the article we are reviewing, not the contributors or nominators. Sometimes, though, a nomination from someone not familiar with an article can result - as in this case - in a quick fail as there are issues which they may not be aware. This is not a reflection on you, and I don't want you to feel that you shouldn't nominate articles unless you are a significant contributor. Please do continue to seek out articles you feel are decent, and nominate them. However, I would say that it helps to have done a few reviews so you can get to closer grip with the requirements. If you haven't done any GA reviews, and would like some experience (and there is a huge backlog at

Future changes

  • URLs in the recent changes IRC feed will no longer be rewritten to unencrypted HTTP. This could be a breaking change for bots dependent on the IRC feed. [71]
  • The edit tabs for the wikitext editor and the visual editor will be combined to one single edit tab. You will be able to choose which one you prefer. If you are not logged in, your choice will be saved as a cookie in your browser. You can test the single edit tab. [72][73]
  • There is a beta feature that adds links to the subject on other Wikimedia projects. This works much like the links to for example Wikipedia articles in other languages. It will go out of beta testing and be enabled for everyone in January. Wikis that don't want this can decide to have it disabled. [74][75]
  • The difference between "alerts" and "messages" notifications is unclear to some. The developers want feedback at the Phabricator task or on MediaWiki.org so they can make this better. You can give feedback in your language if you can't write in English.

  • Administrators can hide individual entries of a page with RevisionDelete. There is now a button to choose "all", "none" or "inverse" in Special:Log. The article history will get the same buttons soon. Wikis that have done this locally with JavaScript will be able to remove that code. [82]

  • There is now an extension called ArticlePlaceholder. It can automatically generate content on Wikipedia with data from Wikidata if there is no Wikipedia article. It will have a tag to remind the reader it is not an article and ask the reader to create one. The developer is now looking for smaller Wikipedias that want to try the extension. [84]
  • The OTRS system will be upgraded. The plan is to do this on 3 February at 08:00 (UTC). It will probably take 6 to 8 hours. OTRS will be down during the upgrade. [85]
  • Users will soon be automatically congratulated when they reach some edit count milestones. [86]

Problems

  • Sites with a wikimedia.org address were by mistake redirected to the Wikimedia Foundation wiki on 26 January. This included Meta and Wikimedia Commons. The mistake was fixed after an hour. [87]
  • Some users had problems logging in and out around 22 January. Bots also had problems and edit previews did not work properly. This was because of problems related to the new component SessionManager. It was undone on 23 January. [88][89]
  • Because of new problems with SessionManager the latest version of MediaWiki was removed from the Wikimedia wikis again on 31 January. The new version this week will be without SessionManager. [90]

Changes this week

  • The page history will get a help link. This will go to Help:Page history on Meta. Wikis can exchange it for a link to their local pages. [91]
  • Notifications will only show part of a page name if it is very long. You will also have another way to mark notifications as read. [92][93]
  • The Universal Language Selector input methods are now available with the visual editor. This means many who write in non-Latin scripts can now use the visual editor. [94]
  • The visual editor will now give you more tools to edit tables. You can move rows and columns in a table and copy parts of tables to make new ones. You can also copy and paste more than one cell at the same time. [95][96][97]
  • The visual editor has a new warning message when you leave a page you are editing without saving. Non-English wikis might need to translate it. [98][99]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 February. It will be on all wikis from 4 February (calendar).

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016 GA Cup

Greetings, all!

We would like to announce the start of the 3rd

Good article nominations
! Thus far, there have been two GA Cups; both were successful in reaching our goals of significantly reducing the traditionally long queue at GAN, so we're doing it again. Currently, there are over 500 nominations listed and about 450 articles waiting to be reviewed. We hope that we can again make an impact this time.

The 3rd GA Cup will begin on March 1, 2016. Four rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on July 31, 2016), but this may change based on participant numbers. There will be slight changes to the scoring system, based upon feedback we've received in the months since GA Cup #2. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same. We're also looking to spice up the competition a bit by running parallel competitions. Finally, there's a possibility of assisting a

WikiProject Good Articles
backlog drive in the last three weeks of February, before our competition. Please stay tuned for more information as we get it.

Sign-ups for the upcoming competition are currently open and will close on February 20, 2015. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors, so sign-up now!

Recent changes

  • Syntax highlighting support is now available for 53 more computer languages. [101]
  • When you get a notification that an edit has been reverted, the notification now quotes part of the edit summary. [102]
  • RESTBase is now using scrub_wikitext instead of scrubWikitext. [103]

Changes this week

  • Wikidata will have a new data type called "math". It will be used for formulas. [104][105]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 February. It will be on all wikis from 11 February (calendar).

Future changes

  • Other sites will be able to tell when visitors come from links on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia sites. They used to be able to do this until we started using forced HTTPS in June 2015. This is planned to happen on 15 February. [106][107]
  • Wikidata will have a new data type called "external-id". It will be used for references to external resources. It will be enabled on February 16. Some properties will be changed to the new data type. [108][109][110]
