re: Sjöström articles

Hi! Thanks for your comment. I think it's important that all films for notable directors and actors are created, even if they're are now lost or forgotten. The Swedish wiki has articles for all these films too, so there could be useful information over there to help with expansion. Thanks. Lugnuts (talk) 07:58, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Låt den rätte...

Hi Smetanahue. Good work replacing the IMDb cite. I had been planning to do that for a long time, but never got around to locating a source for all the release dates.

Anyway, I was wondering if you particularly prefer raw references rather than citation templates. If you have no particular preference, I may change it to a citation template at some point, since most of the article now uses those. Regards, decltype (talk) 16:59, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, great. I have noticed all the work you have done on Swedish film articles. It would be great to get another one up to GA, but it's a lot of work. decltype (talk) 17:54, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Please join the discussion on the talkpage concerning how to describe the film. Just reverting back and forth isn't constructive.

Harmony Korine

Hey Smetanahue. Thanks for the links. I've been looking for someone who is well-versed in knowledge about Korine's films as well as proficient with Wikipedia. It seems I've found just the person. Hopefully, over time, we can construct some good articles. Endlessmug (talk) 00:54, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work!

Just stopping by to thank you for your recent overhaul of Lilya 4-ever; keep it up!  Skomorokh  01:08, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I see that you have worked on quite a few articles related to Russia, are you a Russian speaker by any chance? It could perhaps be a good idea to include some notes on the Russian reception of the film in the article. But I can't read Russian so I can't do it myself. White Ribbon

Although I undid your change I'm thinking about your objection. I didn't mean it dismissively. My thinking is that if a movie is about a sick man's last wishes, we wouldn't hesitate to say he's sick. In this case, I think it's factual (and sourced) that the society in the village is sick. But perhaps you disagree and I'm interested in your thoughts. Thanks. --Ring Cinema (talk) 18:03, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I hope you don't mind, but I don't believe in having one conversation in two places so I responded to you on my talk page. I think it's easier. --Ring Cinema (talk) 23:51, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cannes 2010

Excellent idea to try and get all the films up to a good standard. Last year, I did a lot of work on the main 2009 article, with the hope of getting it to a featured list (compare some of the Academy Award ones). Maybe the 2010 page can make it this time! Lugnuts (talk) 18:48, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The lead section needs expanding for one. I think everything else is OK - each section is referenced laid out OK, etc. I'll cross-check with the FL guidance. Lugnuts (talk) 19:15, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Again - thanks for all the excellent work on expanding the 2010 films. Do you have any links to expand/create the production details for last years film Dogtooth? I'm more than happy to write the narrative for the article. If you can find anything of use, please add it to the talkpage of the article, and I'll incorporate it into the article. Cheers! Good idea - I'll drop a note on the Greek project's page. Really recommend the film, if it screens anywhere near where you are. Lugnuts (talk) 09:16, 8 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Illusionist article

Hi Smetanahue, It was good to see your edits to to The Illusionist‎. I wasn't sure what one sentence meant
"The film opened in France in 84 copies."
I wondered if this meant "84 cinemas". Do you think you could clarify. Thanks.

Poetry 2010 Korean Film

Hello there. I'm sorry I didn't reply your message from a few months ago as I didn't know I had a message. I spent a fair amount of time on the Korean cinema section last summer before the new semester started and now, winter break, I hope to continue some as well. I don't speak Korean beyond basic conversation but I will take a look at the Korean page and see if I can write up a summary. Thanks for bringing that to my attention and sorry again for the really late reply.

Thanks! Thought it might already exist to be honest! Lugnuts (talk) 13:21, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dogtooth

Thanks again with the expansion work on this article. It's looking pretty good now. Hopefully I can find some non-English reactions to the Oscar nom! Lugnuts (talk) 13:56, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah unfortunately I don't speak Greek. I don't think I can take the Dogtooth article much further at this point unless there are new interviews made, so I'll have to focus on the other Oscar noms instead, even though they're not nearly as good movies. Smetanahue (talk) 14:12, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Me neither! I've posted a request on the Greek WP talkpage for any local coverage, and I've also found an article (in English) with reaction from Lanthimos. Lugnuts (talk) 13:39, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Jackpot! Yannismarou very kindly posted this on my talkpage. I've built these refs in, feel free to improve the layout/formatting, etc. Lugnuts (talk) 20:03, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Berlin

Hi Smetanahue. Film festival time is upon us once again. For this year's Berlin Festival, I saw you had a comment about a film in competition in the edit history (Tales of the Night), and I've split out the main film infomation from the existing article and populated a former redirect (

Yes, agree with the poor show this time round, however The Turin Horse looks quite interesting. Lugnuts (talk) 08:25, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the update. You were much more successful finding things than I was last night. Film director templates

Hello Smetanahue. After all your sterling work on film director navigation boxes, I am sorry to see film dates disappearing from some of them recently. Although their removal may give a more streamlined appearance to the box, it is usually at the expense of helpfulness. Dates are actually useful as navigational aids in all sorts of circumstances. For instance, if I want to check out

Fellini's films of the 1970s, at present it requires trial-and-error to identify which ones they are. Or if I am a newcomer to a Soviet filmmaker like Dovzhenko
, it is useful to see at a glance in which periods of his 30-year career he was most active before following up individual films. And in some cases the date is important as an identification element, especially where an English title has been used for a foreign classic. Take the case of Abel Gance's 1917 film Mater dolorosa (as opposed to his 1932 version): I doubt whether many Gance enthusiasts would recognise it under the title The Torture of Silence, but at least with a date attached they might track it down more quickly. As far as I can see, the majority of director navigation boxes have been constructed with the dates included, and I think that greatly enhances their usefulness. Lampernist (talk) 13:09, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for your prompt reply - and perhaps you'll permit me to come back with a couple of points! Firstly, on the comparison with other templates like
Shakespeare, Scientology, World War II, these are complex subjects whose structure is built into the group divisions of the template - whereas in most film careers the dates really are the primary structuring element. If the template has a decade structure, that goes part of the way, but I still think the specific dates are better for films. Secondly, in those other templates that you mention, the article headings are arranged in alphabetical order, and that's clear enough; in the director templates, the articles are kept in their date order - but if the dates aren't there, it is confusing to see what the order is. But to return to my main issue: I take your point that navigation boxes should be devoted to navigation, but I would argue that the dates are often an important part of that navigation. If you are looking for a route to a film title that you know, then OK, the titles are enough. But I find that there are many occasions when I want to navigate by the date structure instead, or by a combination of title and date (this is the point about foreign films whose English titles are not always universally familiar even though they are Wikipedia's preferred form). So I think I would still like to champion the importance of film dates (above any other factor - and the TV listings usually bear that out!) Lampernist (talk) 14:45, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply
]

Well done on making the effort with the table - but our "issue" still remains ;) I've left a few comments on
