Les Huguenots is a French opera in five acts by Giacomo Meyerbeer, and is one of the most popular and spectacular examples of grand opera. With a libretto by Eugène Scribe and Émile Deschamps, the work premiered in Paris on 29 February 1836. This sketch in pen, watercolour and gouache by the scenic designer Philippe Chaperon depicts the set for the first act of Les Huguenots for an 1897 production of the opera at the Palais Garnier in Paris.
