Hey Bogdan:

Would you like to help me with the Thracian language article? I'm about to expand it. I need help weeding out non-cognates that random editors placed over the past few years, also help tracking down more attestations of the Thracian lexical items. 76.208.169.188 (talk) 18:51, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

The article lack any references for the list of words. That table ought to have for each word the source of the word (what ancient author or a reference to the epigraphic source) and a reference for each proposed PIE etymology. I'll try to do some cleanup. bogdan (talk) 19:07, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
Ok, please be careful with your adjustments, there is a section there for ==Attestations==. A number of the alleged cognates are wrong, added by random probably Slavic-speaking users (however most of the Slavic cognates look to be correct). Also someone seems to have removed a Romanian cognate that you had placed a year or two ago. 76.208.169.188 (talk) 19:12, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
If I don't get to soon expanding that section where Thraco-Phrygian is discussed, here is some info about why "Thraco-Phrygian" is no longer a major theory, see that Paleolexicon website given as an external link in Thracian language: three major points 1) Phrygian was mostly Centum, very marginally satemized; 2) Phrygian was very close to Greek, Thracian doesn't seem to have been so close to Greek, aside from maybe some southern Thracian language groups. 3) Phrygian anthroponyms etc. do not support Thraco-Phrygian. This is not to say that a study of Phrygian would not turn up many close cognates with Thracian, but that's not enough to support Thraco-Phrygian. 76.208.169.188 (talk) 05:15, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
By the way, when Bogdan says, "That table ought to have for each word the source of the word (what ancient author or a reference to the epigraphic source) and a reference for each proposed PIE etymology"---Yes I agree with Bogdan there and that's how I want the article to be, and I contacted Bogdan to help me get the article like that. When I was adding the PIE roots, I noted "after Pokorny", "after Olteanu", etc., and even there more specific references were needed, however I wanted to fill in the table, and if I were to have waited till I had all the references, the table would have been bare for years. With that said, all of the PIE etymologies currently shown are from the Thracological literature, but from who and from what publication exactly, I don't have that info now. 76.208.166.185 (talk) 06:42, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

To the be the best

I wa wondering (or, after a while, me and Biruitorul were wondering) if you would be interested in helping us accomplish something that, for me in any case, is uncharacteristically patriotic: an all-Romanian, all-WWI, Did You Know queue on December 1. We've got two articles set aside already, I for one have got some more in the making, and the more the better: maybe we end up with two queues... but I'm getting ahead of myself here. Anyway, it would be great to have you in as the third contributor, provided you want, have the time to, and are inspired by the topic. I guess this is sort of an open invitation, "should you want to accept it". Dahn (talk) 17:53, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

I like the idea, so count me in. I'm thinking of writing an article about Romania during the Central Powers occupation and maybe I can find some other topic. :) bogdan (talk) 19:43, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
I was thinking of that as well, but my concern is that it would be redundant to the existing
Alexandru Tzigara-Samurcaş. It could also tackle the fact that toward the end even legitimate Romania recognized the administration - it had to, I guess, but it's just one of those gems... In my view, it could fill the big hole at the middle of Romania in World War I
without creating the redundant overlap.
But whatever you chose of the two is fine, and I'll be there to consolidate. As per our good old tradition :). Dahn (talk) 01:11, 5 November 2011 (UTC)
Where would cultural aspects fit in? This is an essay focusing on Romanian culture during the war, both before 1916, during the occupation and under the Iasi government. Unfortunately, we can't see all of it, and I'm not sure where else we could find material on the subject (the author says it's largely neglected), but there's a Polish culture during World War II, so maybe. - Biruitorul Talk 14:22, 5 November 2011 (UTC)
Oh, believe me, there are sources, to count just my usual suspects (Cernat, Călinescu, Boia, Vianu Sr., Vianu Jr., Crohmălniceanu, Gârbea, Cioculescu, Cioroianu, Tismăneanu, Veiga, Pârvulescu, Stanomir, Ornea, Babeţi & Ungureanu, Neumann all tackle the subject in various ways); I also have worthy prefaces to Rebreanu, Fundoianu, Vinea, Topîrceanu, Cezar Petrescu, and Ilincioiu's study to Doctrina ţărănistă. That's the literary, social and philosophical side mainly. But then we have the visual arts stuff, where I can mainly rely on Grigorescu, but I also have some monographs on some of the main names to remember (Verona, Tonitza) and we can easily get more on some of the others who add to the chorus (say, Paciurea or this guy). Nothing I have can replace Maria Bucur as the source on popular culture, alas - except perhaps a pinch of Boia here and there, and, provided we can leaf through and get the relevant bit, something in the precious Neubauer-Cornis series.
The issue with synthetic articles is not about writing them, it's about finishing them and then spraying the links around in all relevant articles. It's of the Symbolist movement category, if we do it right; if not... I mean, Polish culture during World War II has improved a lot (the article, I mean, not the subject!), but it still looks like trivia has been thrown in there. Dahn (talk) 21:50, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
At which point I realize I haven't replied to your most stringent question: whether or not we end up creating a separate article, I find that the basic overview on culture belongs most likely at the end of Romania in World War I - which is now so militarily-focused that it is illegible.
A note of my own, for when/if we get a look into this: we are likely to find ourselves ignoring this aspect, but note how the period has had an indirect impact on Romanian cinema, from Ciulei (may God rest our Orson Welles) to this (the lady' right - it's quite good) and, obviously, this (the epilogue, I mean). Dahn (talk) 22:01, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

Btw, Bogdan, can you help me with this? I seem to have botched up the vectorizing (again!), and there's plenty of gaps in my understanding of how it works: for instance, why the font I chose, which was closer to the model, never made it on the commons copy. If you want to redo it from scratch and upload over it, I wouldn't mind the least; in fact, you'd be helping me hide my shame :). Dahn (talk) 10:02, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Paleo-Balkan Languages

Hi!

I stumbled upon the article on paleo-balkan languages which you started a long time ago. While your intention seems to have been good, it has somehow gone out of hand by now. I started a discussion and wanted you to know if you like to have a word in the discussion.Amilah (talk) 20:47, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

The term is used by linguistics not as a subgroup of the IE languages, but rather as a geographical grouping of the languages, which, with the exception of Greek, we know very little other than the fact they were IE. The article doesn't say anywhere that they were in fact a family. There are some sources about the topic, so it's possible to add more references. bogdan (talk) 21:20, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Bogdaniusca,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at [email protected] (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at [email protected]. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk)23:27, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Dobruja/Wallachia

I've always surmised that at its most basic level, there are three divisions in Romania: Moldavia (including Bukovina), Transylvania (including the Banat, Crisana and Maramures) and Wallachia (including Oltenia and Dobruja). The Church, at any rate, lumps in the latter with Wallachia in the Bucharest Metropolis.

Even if Dobruja is entirely separate from Wallachia, that leaves the question of what to do with Cocoş Monastery (and any other monasteries we may write about in the area), since I would like to put them all in subcategories. One option is to create a new Category:Romanian Orthodox monasteries in Dobruja. The other is to define the Wallachia category as including Dobruja, even if it's not technically in Wallachia. Which would you prefer? - Biruitorul Talk 17:35, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

I don't think I've ever heard of Dobruja being included in Wallachia, so I think it's best to make a separate category. bogdan (talk) 17:58, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

troll

Hi, I noticed you blocked a troll. Please check out a similar

talk
) 02:21, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

Someone should research into the time it takes to create a new account and compare it to the time it takes to block an account. If it takes less time to create an account than it takes to block one, then the admin who invests his time in blocking the account is investing more energy than the troll, or the instigator, in creating the account. I'm not a mathematician, but I would assume that in order to find out the coefficiency, one would first start by counting the steps it takes to complete the task in question and time it. The formula could look something like this:

c x t = R; where c stads for calories, t stads for time, and r stands for resources. Say, for instance, that it takes me (an instigator and a sock puppet) 3 seconds to create an account. In addition to this, it also takes me 1 calorie to perform the task while I'm sitting down. That would result in a value of 3 (3 x 1 = 3). If we consider that the admin has more tasks to perform, since his operation is more complex, than we can heuristically conclude that the admin is investing more resources. Truth to be told, other values should be taken in the composition. For instance, on a neurological level, the admin can draw more pleasure in exercising his powers (dopamine is released, the amygdala is stimulated), than what the instigator experiences when he is blocked. Well, until he (read: me) returns. Then who knows what sick pleasures he draws for making his reappearance known. Oh, what a sick world we live in! Omg, trolls at every street corner! Damn it, it used to be better in the old days, when surfing the internet for an hour cost you 10 bucks! Back then, the troll would budget his internet time by first writing his instigative post on a word processor, then connect to the internet and quickly paste the text into the forum- or the newsgroup post. With the connection being slower and rather unreliable, one was careful how he wasted his data volume. But I wouldn't be knowing anything about that! I've only been doing this since, err ... 2001. So now I sit starring on my Mac, connected to 4G wireless, and instigate. "But, but," you think, "when we ban you, we also ban your IP." True enough, but as I told Dahn last year, that's pretty useless. Only if you could ban the motherboard would it mean anything (you can't due to regulations that prohibit it). As it is now, you ban this IP, I take my other laptop connected to a 3G; you ban that one, I take out my iPhone; you ban that one (I wonder if you can?), I steal someone's computer. Oh, or I just renew the IP. Lolz!

Anyhow, this isn't the reason why I came to Bogdan's talkpage. The reason I came to Bogdan's talkpage is to ask him for the etymology of "razesti" (Bogdan is some kind of linguist, or was going to be, but fucked up). That don't matter, though. So Bogdan, do you know? I checked Dexonline but couldn't find anything. Thanks in advance, vere! :) --Cei Trei (talk) 18:52, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

Do you mean "răzeși" (as in free middle-class peasants in Moldavia)? the etymology seems to be "részes", which means "partner", "shareholder". bogdan (talk) 19:00, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

Anthology of Modern Romanian Verse - Bilingual Edition (Daniel Ionita, Editura Minerva 2012)

Bogdan,

In esenta, iti voi relata pe scurt situatia. Cand vei avea timp si dispozitie, voi aprecia raspunsul tau.

Ca scurta prezentare: Locuiesc de 32 de ani la antipozi (Noua Zeelanda initial, si de 22 de ani in Australia, Sydney). Predau la University of Technology Sydney (Organisational Improvement, Lean Six Sigma - in cadrul Executive Development Unit, Graduate School of Business). Acum... Editura Minerva mi-a publicat recent (Noiembrie 2012) 2, Bilingual Edition, (English/Romanian) lucrare scrisa in colaborare cu Prof.Univ.

Buna Bogdan,
In primul rand multumesc pentru indrumari si explicatii. Le voi urma. Iata acum cateva "dovezi", inclusiv receinzie in Romania Literara. Atazez link-ul mai jos din RomLit, apoi articolu (bilingv) in Confulente Romanesti (unde dupa articolul in Romaneste, exista si varianta in limba Engleza). Ca si unul doua alte articole (unul de la Agentia de Carte, etc).
Ma voi lasa bineinteles indrumat...

Do you still do svg images?

I you do, could you perhaps help me? I'm working on the long-awaited article about the original People's Party, and there's two I can think of that would really improve the article. For one, I only approximated the party symbol - on commons, we just don't have a yellow hexagram that would look right. The model could be something like this (I'm not suggesting we should add the portrait in the middle, but, hm, it would be a nice addition...). Also, a map of Greater Romania with Ialomiţa, Teleorman and Vlaşca highlighted would be really cool - it would show what regions the PP got most of its votes from. What say you? Dahn (talk) 14:20, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

translation

Hi, I was wondering if you might be willing to assist in a small translation job. Here is an illustration with Italian labels. Might you translate them into English? – JBarta (talk) 19:11, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

(Pushing my luck)

Kudos on the massive upload of dacoromanica stuff on commons, but please don't forget about the People's Party stuff I asked for. I'm almost done with the article, and it would be really cool if we could synchronize - it would make the article look really neat, and would give us the DYK image to boot. If you can't work on this the moment, it's still okay, I'm willing to wait - but I just want to make sure you did not forget about it. You're one of a handful of guys who can both work with vectors and can identify stuff written in Romanian, so you're essential for this pet project of mine. (It was either you or Andrei Nacu, but he seems not to be very active, and does not appear to be very interested in such modern stuff.)

Think of this as a gentle "bump" on a forum page... Dahn (talk) 14:22, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

I tried something, but it's not really that great. It seems that when exporting to SVG, some things got a bit different, but here it is: . bogdan (talk) 18:31, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks! Well, it is very nice, but something sure did happen to it. As you might remember, I used to get the same errors when I would tackle svgs over here. Do you suppose it's a wiki error? Dahn (talk) 16:30, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

About the table

I've removed the table in the

Satu-Mare
article because it was showing fake information from a website that does cite a source but when checking with the source (Varga E. Arpad) the content is actually totally different. I've replaced the table with correct data. I've explained everything here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Satu_Mare#Wrong_demographics_.3F -Paul- (talk) 11:09, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

I've already explained it here. Please stop reverting. Please check my source (actually it's the same source as the one cited for the table) - I used the real, original source. The numbers are totally wrong in the table. I don't know how to place a comment if using the undo function so I can't explain that there.

COI stuff

Hi, a couple of things for you. First, this is starting to exasperate me. We have one "Popescu ionica" (her?) constantly reverting to a whitewashed version of Hellvig's biography, one that, for starters, conveniently omits mention of his legal troubles. She (he?) has also stated an odd editing philosophy, one in which engagement with pseudonymous users is not to be considered. This one is quite different in tone from Eheditor; regardless, Hellvig's office (I assume both work for him) seems to be trying hard to present their boss in a positive light.

We now have an article on the other main issue of the season (Roșia Montană aside). It could use some work, but at least it's a start to a long overdue article. - Biruitorul Talk 14:14, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

How's your memory... at 22:19, 14 February 2006‎ you added the hatnote For the leader of the Transylvanian Memorandum, see Ioan Raţiu.. Now I have an enquiry at OTRS2014020210007254 where the poster says that last year (around October) the hatnote to Ioan Raţiu worked, but now it doesn't and is a red link. I can't see any previous pages with that name (or deleted ones, or similar names). He was questioning if pages with diacritics still worked correctly.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:22, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

I don't think that the article Ioan Rațiu ever existed: there is nothing in archive.org, nothing in any wikipedia mirrors. There is an article in the Romanian Wikipedia. bogdan (talk) 22:46, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Bogdangiusca. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

"extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion
with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016,

a request for comment
established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that

TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Bogdangiusca.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available

here
but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at

Can you help verify translations of articles from Romanian

Hello,

Would you be able to help evaluate the accuracy of translations of Wikipedia articles from Romanian to English Wikipedia?

File:Language icon.svg

This would involve evaluating a translated article on English Wikipedia by comparing it to the original Romanian article, and marking it "Pass" or "Fail" based on whether the translation faithfully represents the original. Here's the reason for this request:

There are a number of articles on English Wikipedia that were created as

machine translations from different languages including Romanian , using the Content Translation tool
, sometimes by users with no knowledge of the source language. The config problem that allowed this to happen has since been fixed, but this has left us with a backlog of articles whose accuracy of translation is suspect or unknown, including some articles translated from Romanian. In many cases, other editors have come forward later to copyedit and fix any English grammar or style issues, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the translation is accurate, as factual errors from the original translation may remain. To put it another way: Good English is not the same as good translation.

If you can help out, that would be great. Here's a sample of the articles that need checking:

All you have to do, is compare the English article to the Romanian article, and mark it "Pass" or "Fail" (templates {{Pass}} and {{Fail}} may be useful). (Naturally, if you feel like fixing an inaccurate translation and then marking it "Pass", that's even better, but it isn't required.)

If you can help, please let me know. Thanks! Mathglot (talk) 09:56, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
