ARB (non) notification

There are several people who should technically been notified, but it's obvious to anyone with a shred of intellectual honesty what you meant by your comment. I gather the sentiment held by most is there was no point bothering you ovet this. If anyone should have notified you it should have been Neotarf. But I doubt they would have wanted you to speak up, knowing they were taking your words out of context. But on the chance they believed what they said, then they have serious competency issues. It warms my heart that some of Eric's supporters are women, who effectively laugh at the thought of Eric being a misogynist. Two kinds of porkMakin'Bacon 20:57, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Ealdgyth, I thought about pinging you in that bit on the ArbCom Evidence Talk Page Thingy, but wasn't sure if I should bother you with it--I also didn't realize that you hadn't been pinged by the plaintiff, so to speak. Or, of course, I figured that I was a white knight on a big ole horse saving yet another helpless female editor from oppression--a reading the plaintiff might wish to adopt. In other words, sorry--I should have pinged you. Hey, every time I look at Middle Ages I'm stung by envy and filled with admiration. That must have taken an enormous amount of time and energy, more than I can really imagine. Will you allow Jimbo to clone you and speedraise those hatchlings so we can finish Wikipedia? Happy editing, Drmies (talk) 05:22, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

FYI. Looks like that's the only article they've contributed to; they've made a good-faith beginner's attempt to format the references, so I thought it would be worth a welcome, in the hope they will become another Anglo-Norman topic editor. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 13:11, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, I saw the reference. The problem is... not only is it unsourced, but it's undue weight. Douglas mentions the penitentiary in one sentence, but does not connect it with William, instead discussing it's evidence for the composition of the troops at Hastings. Also, Douglas states that the penitentiary is alleged to have been produced by Ermenfid. Bates doesn't even give it a name, instead calling it a set of ordinances. Bates also states that it could have been only confirmed by Ermenfrid and that the date is not clear - either 1067 or 1070. All in all - too much uncertainty and way too much detail for William's article. Certainly worth mentioning in Ermenfrid's though. Ealdgyth - Talk 13:24, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
I started adding a comment about potentially undue weight to the welcome message but I thought that would be hitting them with multiple bricks at once. I'd like to encourage them to stay, not tell them all the reasons their edits are wrong, of course. I figured you'd use it if it could be used. Source and opinion question

If you have a minute, would you take a look at this talk page? I'm not convinced the source is a good one, and would like your opinion. I'd also like your opinion on the general question Blanche is asking -- it's true that Anderson is notable, and the series is notable, and she's right about where it was published. Drawing that connection without it being specifically referenced in a RS seems wrong to me. I believe you read some sf -- any thoughts on that? Thanks. WikiCup 2014: The results

The 2014 WikiCup champion is Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), who flew the flag of the Smithsonian Institution. This was Godot13's first WikiCup competition and, over the 10 months of the competition, he has produced (among other contributions) two featured lists and an incredible 292 featured pictures, including architectural photographs and scans of historical documents. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 and 2013 WikiCup champion, came in second, having written a large number of biology-related articles. Scotland Casliber (submissions), WikiCup finalist every year since 2010, finished in third.

A full list of our prize-winners follows:

Congratulations to everyone who has been successful in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and a particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have participated this year. We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2014 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! I understand...

...that the ancient Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Wessex is no longer in existence, but can you clarify as to why you find mentioning Hampshire being a part of the kingdom of Wessex during Swithun's lifetime "not useful"? Sorry, I am just keen to learn. I was just adding it for geographical completeness. Great choice of name, by the way. --Plymothian Devonian (talk) 18:37, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

Mainly, you're mixing geographical eras. With "Hampshire" after it (and I really don't care if its there or not, honestly), you're giving the modern location of Winchester. The traditional shires are not strictly speaking truly formed during the period of Swithun's lifetime - so probably the best solution is just listing plain Winchester. Second choice would be what's currently there... third choice would be mentioning Wessex, but without Hampshire, and only last would be what you inserted. Ealdgyth - Talk 18:57, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
Agreed, there is a knot of era-specific geographical info here and my initial edit was confusing - primarily because the article on Hampshire links to the modern county. Perhaps having it as just "Winchester" or "Winchester, Wessex" only with "Modern day Hampshire, England" inserted afterwards in brackets be suitable...? --Plymothian Devonian (talk) 20:16, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
As long as Winchester is linked, I see little need for the further qualifications, honestly. Ealdgyth - Talk 20:19, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
Agreed again. Winchester was an important center of religion in Swithun's time. He was born and died there. He was only bishop of Winchester Cathedral and that is where his shrine is located today. Mentioning Wessex seems a tad pointless when there seems to be nothing in the article hinting towards any greater influence throughout the Kingdom. He wasn't, as far as I can tell, politically active or cosying up to the Wessex monarchs, if you catch my drift...--Plymothian Devonian (talk) 20:23, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
