Pyinsa Kyalani
When was she born?Do you know? Oakkar Kaungyat (talk) 14:32, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, Ko Oakkar Kaungyat. No, I don't know. And the main chronicles don't mention her age except that she was old enough, which basically could mean 10 years old and up. The main chronicle narratives (Maha Yazawin, Yazawin Thit and Hmannan) aren't reliable in this case. The most reliable for this era is Zatadawbon and if we go by the Zata's Kyansittha being born in 1030, and Anawrahta in 1014, I'd guess she was probably born in the late 1010s. Hybernator (talk) 06:39, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
She wasn't born in late 1010s.Her brithdate was same with Anawrahta what I think. Oakkar Kaungyat (talk) 12:36, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
- Oakkar Kaungyat, if you have a reliable source to say that she was born in 1014, please add the source next to 1014. The chronicles only say she was old enough. Btw, "1014s" isn't grammatically correct. 1010s means the decade from 1010 to 1019. Thank you. Hybernator (talk) 04:12, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
DYK for Myanmar Standard Time
On 14 January 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Myanmar Standard Time, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Myanmar Standard Time. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Myanmar Standard Time), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

- Hello Ko Taung Tan ကိုဇွဲပိုင်, thanks very much for the kind words. (I've just copy-edited the Amay Gyan article per your request. I've kept the Irrawaddy article as it's a reliable source.) I agree the Konbaung period articles are pretty sparse, and their quality can definitely be improved. My current plan is to write key Ava and Pegu period articles because those periods are covered only briefly, superficially in most English language books. I'll then move on to Nyaung and Konbaung periods. I'm afraid it'll take years till I get to Konbaung -- as I'm not able to contribute at the same rate like before. Anyway, we all need to help out. And I thank you very much for your contributions thus far. I encourage you to keep contributing at a pace that works for you. Please feel free to ping me to a copyedit review when needed. Best regards, Hybernator (talk) 01:49, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Ako @Hybernator:, pls kindly copyedit on Kyaymyin Mibaya if you have a free time. TIA. Taung Tan (talk) 16:29, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Ko Taung Tan, good job with the article. I made a few minor tweaks here and there. Please add citations where indicated. Thank you. Hybernator (talk) 02:02, 4 July 2022 (UTC)
- Hello Greetings Ko @Hybernator:, I just created the Tayaw kinpun, pls kindly ce and correct spelling if you have a free time. I'm not confidence on the current version. Thanks Best regards. 117.18.228.173 (talk) 21:03, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
- Ko Taung Tan, thanks for creating the article. I've taken a stab at ce'ing it. A pointer on transliteration of Burmese names: it's a good practice to search on the Internet if any prior transliterations already exist -- ideally in reliable sources. Keep in mind that although Burmese is primarily a monosyllabic language, many of its words are polysyllabic, and should be transliterated as such. For example, in this case, တရော် and ကင်ပွန်း both are two-syllable words; so their transliterations should also be polysyllabic: tayaw, kinmun. Anyway, please keep on contributing. Practice makes perfect. Hybernator (talk) 23:45, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
- Ko @Hybernator: Many Thanks, It was promoted to Dyk. i appreciate your outstanding work on the article. You are awesome! Taung Tan (talk) 17:17, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
- You're very welcome, Ko Taung Tan. Glad to help. When I wrote "tayaw, kinmun", I didn't mean that to be the title of the article; I was simply writing that as part of my sentence. :-) "Tayaw kinpun" without the comma is fine. Anyway, please keep contributing. Hybernator (talk) 22:06, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Kawgon Cave. Pls ce and expand if necessary. I also want to promote Dyk. Please give me the best hook. Thank you loads. Taung Tan (talk) 14:51, 24 October 2022 (UTC)]

Improvements to Rakhine people and related articles
Hi @
That said, I started going through Rakhine people and noticed similar claims, which has made me a bit concerned that there is an attempt by users to distort historiography to advance specific interests. Open to your thoughts on how best to address inaccuracies, specifically in the History section, which do not corroborate with History of Rakhine. I think the biggest incongruity is around the timing of when the Arakanese settled their present-day homeland (10th-13th centuries) and the existence of civilizations by peoples who were present in the area before the Arakanese. Similarly, the treatment of List of Arakanese monarchs likely needs to mirror the approach used for List of early and legendary monarchs of Burma (which clearly ). Thanks, Hintha(t) 22:12, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Ko Hintha, thanks for updating the articles. I agree that there are many issues with Rakhine/Arakan related articles, which I've neglected for the past few years (as I have only so much time for Wikipedia.) That said, your suggestion to move some of the early Arakanese monarchs to List of early and legendary monarchs of Burma is definitely doable. I'll add that to my to-do list; it may take a few weeks. Stay tuned. Hybernator (talk) 00:47, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you! I recently just learned that more senior Wikipedia editors now have access to numerous academic databases: [1] I believe you should also qualify for access, in case this is helpful for your ongoing research. Appreciate your work! -Hintha(t) 18:30, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

Origins of Abhiyaza
Hi Ko @Hybernator: While attempting to strengthen the content around the Rakhine people's ethnonyms and ancestral origins, I came across Michael W. Charney's Centralizing Historical Tradition in Precolonial Burma: The Abhiraja/Dhajaraja Myth in Early Kòn-baung Historical Texts (link), where he asserts that the Abhiyaza origin story was borrowed from the Arakan kingdom (dubbed western Burma), and was first referenced in the 1781 Mani Yadanabon. I just wanted to bring this to your attention in case you find this compelling enough to reference in the article. Thanks, —Hintha 💬 05:06, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Ko @Hintha: thanks for the heads-up. I first read the paper when I was researching for the Mani Yadanabon article. I was a bit surprised by his thesis because I hadn't seen such a detailed paper on how the myth came to be. All I knew was from a cursory reference in (Lieberman 2003: 196) that the myth began in the 1770s and gained steam under Bodawpaya. I found Charney's analysis pretty compelling (although I thought the Dhararaja thesis was pretty incredible). Turned out (Lieberman: 196, ref 304) referenced an early manuscript of this paper by Charney.
- Net-net: I did add a summary of Charney's analysis in the Mani Yadanabon article (see note 6). I haven't had a chance to update the Abhiyaza article (although I see the Charney paper has been in the reference section since 2012, added by some IP). Anyway, I'll try to update it when I can find a bit more time. Of course, please do update if you can. Thank you. Hybernator (talk) 04:10, 6 March 2023 (UTC)

Question
Hello bro, I'm Hein. I recently searched for other Burmese native editors who are currently active on Wikipedia and found that you’re active and the most senior editor. I'm facing a few issues with my article Pabhāvatī during the DYK process. Although my DYK nomination was already promoted, the case has been reopened, and the article needs some copyediting and assistance with the {{religious text primary}} tag. As you're one of the leading DYK promoters in the Myanmar project, could you please help me with these? I have a lot of experience, but this tag is new to me and challenging to address. Thank you very much! Hteiktinhein (talk) 15:03, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hello Ko Hein, thanks for reaching out. I'm not as active on Wikipedia anymore so expect slow responses. Just read the article. It looks fine for the most part. Below are my suggestions to improve the article:
- In the section "In the Kusa jataka", I wouldn't say "According to the Buddha" since we don't really know that for sure. Instead, you could say more neutral like "According to the jataka, a young man lived... "
- You could add a bit more to the ending of the jataka -- i.e. why the seven kings came to Madda, and why Kusa needed to defeat them.
- You can/should also add an analysis section.
- E.g., you can reference Liz Wilson's analysis: p. 60–62 as to what she believes is the underlying messages of the jataka. "By presenting alluring female bodies as food for worms, cremation ground reveries enable Buddhist authors to comment with ironic wit and dark double entendre on the futility of beauty, the rapacity of the sex act, and the perversity of sexual desire." You could say something like "According to Liz Wilson, the jataka's Buddhist authors used "ironic wit and double entendre" to illustrate "the futility of beauty, the rapacity of the sex act, and the perversity of sexual desire."
- You can also discuss that the various versions of the jataka exist -- Versions J, V, P, F, etc. as discussed in (Chopra 2018: 179–190), and that not all passages line up.
- For extra credit, you can mention where the historical Madda might have existed. (Chopra 2018: 187–188) discusses Jalalabad, Madras, etc.
Anyway, thanks for contributing. Hybernator (talk) 22:24, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hello bro, I’m unable to access the full version of The Kuśa-Jātaka: A Critical and Comparative Study. Could you suggest where I might find a PDF or an online copy? If you have access to it, could you please share some details? Thanks! Hteiktinhein (talk) 08:46, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, Ko Hein, sorry, I don't have access to the full version. But the link in the article does provide a decent amount of material to work with for Pabhavati. Also try this link for a general preview. Hybernator (talk) 01:40, 17 November 2024 (UTC)

Inquiry About the Shan chronicles
Dear Hybernator,
I hope you are doing well. Thank you for your valuable contributions to the amazing Burmese history-related articles. I sincerely apologize for not translating the Burmese chronicles article into Chinese as I had intended. I still find it challenging to fully grasp the content and translate it accurately.
I would like to ask if you are familiar with the Shan chronicles. Do you know which of them have been translated into English? Additionally, how many of them have electronic copies available in either English or Shan? If possible, I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to obtain an electronic copy. For now I have Hsenwi Yazawin only.
Please let me know if there are any materials or documents I could provide in return. I would be happy to assist in any way I can.
Thank you very much for your time and assistance. I look forward to your response.

. Xiliuheshui · chat 01:45, 8 February 2025 (UTC) - Hi Xiliuheshui, AFAIK, the Padaeng Chronicle and the Jengtung (Kengtung) State Chronicle have been translated into English. You can read the book review by Prof. Than Tun here.
- For the history of the Shan states in English, please check out "History of the Shan State from its origins to 1962" by Prof. Sai Aung Tun. I have the book. Its pre-British history of the Shan states makes up maybe 20% of the book, and is just a regurgitation of the main chronicles and British colonial period historians' narratives. (I don't see any new info, or research.) Now, the rest (80%) of the book is a wealth of information about the Shan states from 1885 to 1962. I bought the book for that reason alone. when you reply my message? I have these books, and I'm not really satisfied with the pre-British history in the book History of the Shan State from its origins to 1962. By the way, if you know someone working on the ancient history of Shan states, would you mind introducing me to him/her? EspeciallyMan Maw, and any other states which has a relation with China. I have some insights on Man Maw from Chinese records, I'm trying to find a Man Maw State Chronicle to verify my thoughts. I believe I can publish a paper about Man Maw if I have more material from Myanmar. I'm professional in China side literatures, I can provide any help as an exchange :) At the end, I have an e-copy of Shan States and Karenni: List of Chiefs and Leading Families which I scanned at British Library in 2022, if you are interested in it, please leave your email (or directly email me at][email protected]

- Hi @瑞丽江的河水:, I wish I could be of more help. I'm not aware of any other historical sources about the topic. I'll ping you if I come across something interesting. (Btw, I too was quite disappointed with the precolonial history parts of Prof. Sai Aung Tun's book.) Anyway, hope you can publish your paper soon -- even if from a mainly Chinese perspective. Hello. You are invited to participate in The World Destubathon. We're aiming to destub a lot of articles and also improve longer stale articles. It's currently planned for June 16-July 13. There is currently $3338 going into it, with $500 the top prize. As 250 countries and entities is too much to patrol, entries will be by user, but there is $500 going into prizes for editors covering the most countries.
