WikiProject Cryptography
Hi there, welcome to WikiProject Cryptography! (An introduction: I'm Matt, I've been editing at Wikipedia for a couple of months, and my most detailed knowledge is about block ciphers, though I like to read/edit other stuff too.) If you have any thoughts on how we can improve cryptography articles, I'd be keen to hear them (we can put them in the "List of open tasks" section). — Matt 12:00, 21 May 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks, Matt, for organizing the project and getting people involved. I've been following crypto on and off since reading the RSA Technical Memo in 1977. I analyzed the PGP web of trust in 1996, and have helped organize the PKI R&D Workshop the last three years. NealMcB 18:38, 2004 May 24 (UTC)

Neal, We now have a formal discussion page for the TT issue, cypher v cipher. It's at the WikiProject Cryptography under discussions. I've taken the liberty of summarizing folks views on the question insofar as I know them under current standings. You might want to chime (or chyme) in there. ww 17:54, 26 May 2004 (UTC)

Capitalization for Titles
Sorry my position was unclear. I say all of this in the full awareness that language is malleable and the product of group consensus. I'd just as soon not get bogged down in a debate about the sociology of linguistics. If you open any grammar book (Chicago, Harbrace, whatever) it tells you that titles for articles, books, whatever are capitalized in a particular way (barring exceptions for things like eBay or e.e. cummings). Ordinarily, you capitalize the first and last word of the title (regardless of whether they're direct articles or verbs) and any words in the body of the title that are important (typically the verbs and the nouns). VLC and SHOUTcast
FYI - someone from VLC posted on Slashdot (not a reliable source, I know) that there's been a big misunderstanding and that they're going to 'reach out' to the VLC folks to get it resolved. It sounds to me like perhaps either serious backpedaling, or maybe just a case of the suits screwing up and the rank-and-file rushing in to fix it. Anyway, I hope you're keeping an eye out for news from reliable sources re: VLC's point of view.
Also, it's not clear from the edits you made what kind of SHOUTcast support has been removed. Is it no longer possible to listen to SHOUTcast streams in VLC, or did they just remove more advanced features like accessing the directory (SHOUTcast Radio) and/or creating a stream? Thanks. —mjb (talk) 20:28, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Serious issue in bcrypt page?
Hi Neal! In Bcrypt which you edited, this fragment "(.. bcrypt computes..) a hash from a given input as follows: bcrypt(cost, salt, key, input)" suggests that the password is fed in input. But the intend in the original definition, and many implementations, is feeding password in key, with input a constant derived from "OrpheanBeholderScryDoubt" broken as three 64-bit blocks. Do you agree/disagree? I suggest a follow-up in Talk:Bcrypt if necessary. Fgrieu (talk) 12:50, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

Samsara
Regarding Samsara (2011 film), the wording in the lead section is based on the "Critical reception" section, not the "Themes" section. RT reports that among the consensus, that narrative flaws have been mentioned. Erik (talk | contribs) 20:02, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
- I assume by "RT" you mean "Rotten Tomatoes"? The section from them says 'Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a score of 72% based on reviews from 53 critics, and reports a rating average of 6.8 out of 10. It reports the critics' consensus, "It's a tad heavy-handed in its message, but Samsara's overwhelmingly beautiful visuals more than compensate for any narrative flaws."' That is very different than the lead section statement which I deleted, and you reinstated with a revert, saying "but felt that it lacked a particular message". That statement does come from the NY Times review mentioned in the Themes section, where it is more praise than criticism, and in contradiction to the RT "consensus" that the message is "heavy handed". So I think it would be better to again drop the text I deleted, and I can't think of something suitable for the lead section to say about the message - it's complicated and understanding it requires knowing more about the history. OK? ★NealMcB★ (talk) 20:19, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
- You're right, the wording could be better. I was too focused on the last part of the RT consensus passage. I did a search engine test to see if there was another kind of meta-analysis but did not find anything useful. Maybe we can just quote Rotten Tomatoes in the lead section? And replace it with another overview whenever it comes along? Erik (talk | contribs) 13:47, 10 October 2012 (UTC)]
- I could live with that, but I'd still prefer leaving that out of the intro since the whole notion of "narrative flaws" in a movie without words seems distracting that early in the article. ★NealMcB★ (talk) 14:02, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

Sortition/demarchy merger
I see no consensus in two votes for and two votes against/doubtful. I would have voted against if I knew there would be a snap decision like this made out of nowhere. Considering the lack of interest in the merger proposal over a couple years now it seemed unnecessary. Is it really wise to go ahead and merge an article like this without clear interest and clear consensus or even a warning? --Shabidoo | Talk 20:47, 27 December 2014 (UTC)
- I'm sorry you didn't get your opinion in earlier. But it was not a hasty decision - the proposal has been out there for years, and something needed to be done. There was significant activity in 2014 which seemed to be enough consensus to me, especially after some more investigation. There were four votes to merge (fela Winkelmolen, Rpm2004, vagary (who preferred to merge the other way), and nealmcb, and two opposed (Mikedonovan2011 and 138.251). It was a bit confusing since Rpm2004 agreed with "winkelmolen", which is a different name for fela. It seems clear that the term "demarchy" is ill-defined, whereas sortition has a long, clearer history. Most of the links to Demarchy that I reviewed were about sortition. We clearly needed some sort of change since having a Merge proposal up on both pages, which are mostly duplication, for years doesn't help the encyclopedia. I doubt that today an article that tried to focus on just Demarchy (i.e. the various divergent meanings of it from Hayek, Burnheim etc) without the more well-established material on random selection as a general procedure for a variety of decision-making circumstances, it wouldn't be considered notable, but someone could try. But having two articles both talking about random selection clearly seems wrong to me. Mostly it seemed to me that no one had taken the time to dig in and do the merge. ★NealMcB★ (talk) 21:14, 27 December 2014 (UTC)
- Sorry but I don't understand how you can read six votes on a merge request that only has five votes. One of the votes was based on a distaste of headers and the user admitted that they hadn't even read the articles. Liking or not liking headers should never dictate whether to go ahead and ignore policy and merge two articles after only 19 days of discussion (even if there have been rehashed proposals over several years or not). It's the strength of the arguments made in the discussion which counts rather than impatience. The fact that few people have bothered to participate anymore in these so far unsuccessful merger discussions can just as easily point to editors seeing it as a waste of time. You'll note that I myself said that I don't think they should be merged in a comment just above the merger proposal on the talk page and that users have spent a considerable amount of time recently in 2014 trying to improve it which I see was a waste of time. There are countless examples of pages which talk about similar subjects but cover them from different angles. Sortition covers the random selection of members or representatives for a variety of purposes while demarchy is a form of government where a form of sortition is used. That's not the same thing . The merged article doesn't even include a subsection on demarchy. I looked up the stats of article visits which show about 4000 visits per month to demarchy and about 5000 to sortition. There is clearly no small amount of reader who want particular information about demarchy and will probably be rather confused in their attempt to find it now burried in the sortition article. --Shabidoo | Talk 13:43, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
- The discussion (at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Demarchy#Merger_proposal_.28again.29_.5Bdecember_2012.5D) was started on 2012-12-08, over 2 years ago. Discussion has mostly taken place in 2014, in April, July, August, October and December. Perhaps in counting 19 days you misread the start of the discussion (and header tagging) as 2014? Which of the 6 votes which I identified do you not consider a vote? Given that there were more people in favor of a merge than not, and the vast duplication between the pages, it seems to me that the thing that needed to happen was for someone to actually step forward and implement the merge, so I took it upon myself to do so. Declaring the merge proposal a failure would seem to be much worse, and it didn't seem likely to me that we'd get much more clarity by asking for help, but perhaps I was wrong. Most of the material in the Demarchy article was about sortition, and the rest reflected differing uses of the term by a very small set of writers with different opinions about what it meant. Everyone who click on a Demarchy link now will get the same information, in what seems to me to be a better-written and better-referenced form on the Sortition article. Does your view change given the understanding that this merge process has been ongoing for over 2 years? ★NealMcB★ (talk) 15:00, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
- Sorry but I don't understand how you can read six votes on a merge request that only has five votes. will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Richfife (talk) 22:39, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for your contributions. It seems that you may have added public domain content to one or more Wikipedia articles, such as NIST Cybersecurity Framework. You are welcome to import appropriate public domain content to articles, but in order to meet the Wikipedia guideline on plagiarism, such content must be fully attributed. This requires not only acknowledging the source, but acknowledging that the source is copied. There are several methods to do this described at Wikipedia:Plagiarism#Public-domain sources, including the usage of an attribution template. Please make sure that any public domain content you have already imported is fully attributed. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 01:25, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you, Diannaa! I had made it clear in text that I copied from the standard, but you're right that using the NIST-PD template is exactly the right thing to add to clarify the permissions etc. Done! ★NealMcB★ (talk) 03:52, 10 August 2016 (UTC)

What a waste of my time, of the deleter's time, and of the restorer's time. US Banknote Contest | ||
---|---|---|
November-December 2019 | ||
There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions |

Hi Nealmcb . Years ago you added pricing informating to Ledipasvir/sofosbuvir[1]. I don't know if you're interested, but there's been a great deal of discussion on the topic of pricing information for pharmaceuticals, culminating in Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Medicine, which is currently in Proposed decision phase. I was thinking of using your edit as an example in discussion after the arbitration is closed, showing one of the few cases where I'd hope we can find easy consensus for inclusion of such information. Requesting Interview
Hi NealMcB!
My name is Seve, and I am a Product Manager at the Wikimedia Foundation. I am following up from your interest on our quality signals session page about an upcoming research study I am conducting.
We wish to learn more about how editors discover and use tools and hopefully come up with related products or services that meet your needs and the needs of people like you. I would like to request an hour to interview you for whatever time works best for you. Let me emphasize that I don't wish or intend to interfere with your day or waste your time.
If you want to learn more details about participating in this study, I'd be happy to give you a call and explain more.
Thank you,
Seve

Ship numbers, names, etc.
For clarity, the original name of this section was 'How do ship numbers work? Are they always synonymous with the name?', and what follows is the text of my question. ★NealMcB★ (talk) 20:31, 8 March 2023 (UTC) E.g. my dad served on the "U.S.S. Dehaven, DD 727". Do all ships have both a name and a number? Why? Is one or the other ever changed so that there might be more than one number or name for a given name or number? ★NealMcB★ (talk) 22:50, 22 February 2023 (UTC)
Neal, as I said, your original post didn't mention anything about "improving that article", it only asked about how ship numbers work, which has nothing to do with that article, and when you add in the bit about your dad's ship, it appeared you were asking a question out of personal interest. Typically, article talk pages are
Unfortunatly, as I was doing so, another editor left a brief reply on the article talk page at the same time (what is known as an
While I had hoped my inital reply would be sufficient, or at the very least you would follow the suggestion in their reply, you suddenly metioned that your intent was to improve that article. But the thing is, that article is about the
But now for some reason, you have moved my response(s) from here to that article talk page. Like the other editor, though we had different reasons for doing so, I've undone the part of that edit with my comments. If I thought my commemts belonged on that page, I would've posted them there myself. As it is though, I don't think any of the posts currently on that page belong there, for the reasons I've explained above.
Anyway, sorry about the length. Good luck to you & have a nice day. - wolf 22:25, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
- I, ★NealMcB★ (talk), find the following text, added by wolf to this Talk Page via this edit [3], to be valuable insights and worthy material to help enhance Wikipedia, including the ariticle United States ship naming conventions and/or other articles, by clarifing the relationship between ship names and numbers. For reasons explained above, wolf removed the text from here, but I want to clarify that my intent from the beginning was to get relevant information added to the appropriate pages, and I still want wolf's contribution to be easily visible as reference material, so I'll put it back here and trust that it will stay here, based on the licence under which it was posted. I again give thanks to wolf for the contribution, and hope the article or articles on ship identifiers, names, hull numbers etc. will eventually benefit from it! ★NealMcB★ (talk) 20:04, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- In the US Navy, most if not all ships have some type of identification. This nomenclature is part of keeping all their assets organized. The prefix is basically determined by whether the ship is a warship or a support ship. The name is part of that organizing, but is also a means of honouring or recognizing a specific person, or a location (cities, states, etc.), or previous ships of that name, among others. The hull code and numbering is usually specific to a ship type and is again part of organizing and identifying ships. Ships do from time to time change names. You would have to read about that specific ship for the reason, but one reason that has come up more than once is that a ship name was changed to honour someone, (for an example, see: USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN-730)). The same name may be used for diffrent ships, but not at the same time, (for example, see: USS Enterprise, for a list of ships with the same name. Also see: USS Columbia (SSN-771) & USS District of Columbia (SSBN-826) for a pair of ships that almost had the same name at the same time until a corrective change was made). Ships numbers usually don't change, even if the type, prefix and/or name is changed. Numbers are usually specific to type, and at any given time, among active ships, you wouldn't see two destroyers with the same number, but you might see a destroyer, a carrier and a cruiser all with the same number, (eg: USS Ross (DDG-71), USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) & USS Cape St. George (CG-71)).
- For more info, have a look at:
- United States ship naming conventions
- List of destroyers of the United States Navy
- United States Navy 1975 ship reclassification
- United States Ship
- Ship identifier
- Ship prefix
- Hull code
