DYK for Bronfman kidnapping

On 19 February 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Bronfman kidnapping, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a lawyer got his client acquitted of a 1975 kidnapping by accusing the victim of masterminding his own abduction—but in 2020 admitted that he had known it was a lie? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Bronfman kidnapping. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Bronfman kidnapping), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Read this in another languageSubscription list for this newsletter

This newsletter includes two key updates about the Editing team's work:

  1. The Editing team will finish adding new features to the Talk pages project and deploy it.
  2. They are beginning a new project, Edit check.

Talk pages project

Screenshot showing the talk page design changes that are currently available as beta features at all Wikimedia wikis. These features include information about the number of people and comments within each discussion.
Some of the upcoming changes

The Editing team is nearly finished with this first phase of the Talk pages project. Nearly all new features are available now in the Beta Feature for Discussion tools.

It will show information about how active a discussion is, such as the date of the most recent comment. There will soon be a new "Add topic" button. You will be able to turn them off at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion. Please tell them what you think.

Daily edit completion rate by test group: DiscussionTools (test group) and MobileFrontend overlay (control group)

An A/B test for Discussion tools on the mobile site has finished. Editors were more successful with Discussion tools. The Editing team is enabling these features for all editors on the mobile site.

New Project: Edit Check

The Editing team is beginning a project to help new editors of Wikipedia. It will help people identify some problems before they click "Publish changes". The first tool will encourage people to add references when they add new content. Please watch that page for more information. You can join a conference call on 3 March 2023 to learn more.

ANI Pixius

Hi Valereee,

I am writing you via mobile application, as unfortunately due to some bug, I am not able to reply to last message(s) on ANI board; Maybe it is better so, as it is extremely hard to follow what has been exchanged and the clutter now is creating the noise.

I have exchanged the mesaages with @Nill_Einne on my talk page, and if you have time to look at the last one, I would be grateful. [[1]]

Regarding the "admin abuse" i have rephrased in reply what I have ment with it Quod licet Iovi, non licet bovi, and excluded the abuse of the tools, but it was not brief, and then in the "bottom reply" I have ommited that part and now it turned out even worse.

What I can say is that some of my answers were written in, I can say anger, and everything went south (and Wiki rules say to chill and then to reply)

I can assure you that I am not

WP:RGW
, as I have wrote in one sentence "to stop the user" on ANI board in anger. Now I have calmed down, and came to conclusion that any reply written in "retaliation and anger" is only going to make things worse...

What I can say is that I am really sorry about the whole thing.

Thank you for the patience Pixius talk 17:21, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

Hey, @Pixius!
Administrators have two roles: as an editor, and as an administrator. Almost all administrators work sometimes as editors, and many admins work primarily as editors.
When working as an editor, like every other editor they're expected to abide by all of Wikipedia's behavior guidelines. There was a single diff you provided, in your most recent post at ANI, that would represent that admin possibly not adhering to WP behavioral guidelines, a post in which they cast aspersions on another editor's motivations. Not a good look for an admin, but like any other editor unless they were doing this repeatedly we would maybe warn or call them out for it, which I did. Everything else was nothing more than minor rudeness. We do not expect any editor to never lose patience, never say anything rude, never be exasperated or terse. We do kind of hope when they're called on it, they'll recognize it and apologize. But it's not a major offense unless its repeated and ongoing.
When they're working as an administrator, they're doing things like blocking editors, protecting or deleting pages, changing user rights.
If, while working in the role of editor, they'd had a dispute with another editor and blocked the other editor, or removed a right, or protected a page so the other editor couldn't edit it, or threatened to do one of these things if the other editor didn't comply with their wishes -- in other words, if they'd switched from working as an editor to working as an admin w/re that editor after some sort of conflict with that editor -- that would be a abuse of tools. Valereee (talk) 18:29, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
Yes, yes I understand that. That is why I have said he has not abused the administrator tools. Pixius talk 18:32, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on

Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed
.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Draft:Charleston (restaurant)

Interested in this one? The chef, Cindy Wolf (listed at User:FloridaArmy/Missing Pieces), is also notable but thought it made more sense to start with the restaurant. I really do not like writing but enjoy hunting for sources. If you have anything started (or want to start) I don't mind doing some digging even if this one doesn't interest you given I bug you at least occasionally anytime I come across drafts about food. S0091 (talk) 18:14, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

Too funny, I literally was waffling between this restaurant and another when I was in Baltimore a few weeks ago. (Ended up going with the other and regretting it.) Yes, I'll take a look, thanks! Valereee (talk) 18:21, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
And never worry about bugging me about food articles/drafts/ideas, I'm always interested in at minimum taking a look! Valereee (talk) 18:22, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
What a coincidence! Don't you hate when you make a bad choice like that but then there are the times where you really roll the dice and end up with a great experience. One of my most memorable meals was a literal whole in wall in
Roatan (super sketchy) while the always crowded restaurant there gave me food poisoning. You don't know until you try! S0091 (talk
) 18:39, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
Fortunately the regret wasn't because of food poisoning! It wasn't a horrible meal, just meh, when I'd been hoping for wow! :D I've expanded the draft from the sources, but unfortunately two of them are behind a paywall for me. I do think it could be moved to article space any time, though. And that NYT source absolutely could be used to build a bio for Wolf. Valereee (talk) 18:59, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
Lesson learned was always pack tummy stuff when traveling lol. Thanks for the work on the article! Fyi, for pay-walled sources I use the "Bypass paywalls clean" browser extension, which is essentially a must-have in order to review drafts, along with the Google Translate extension. S0091 (talk) 19:42, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
Ugh, extensions. Sometimes they're more trouble than they're worth. I do sometimes go check at Wayback, and that's often successful. Seems to work better with smaller media. The LA Times is the worst. Valereee (talk) 19:51, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
The best/guaranteed place is WP:WikiProject Resource Exchange. Usually editors can get a a newspaper type source to you within a day. S0091 (talk) 19:59, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
Yes, the folks there are awesome! I actually asked for one recently at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Resource_Exchange/Resource_Request#Obscure_coffee_magazine_Standart_Issue_28 which is one of the few I've requested that hasn't been answered. It's really obscure, though, and I didn't think it was likely anyone would have access to it. Valereee (talk) 20:04, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
I requested what ended up being a difficult source. It did take three months but someone eventually got it me. Apparently they keep requests open until they are "officially" closed. I honestly had forgotten about my request until contacted by someone who had it. Super awesome and diligent! S0091 (talk) 20:12, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
Oh, and ones I have started or want to start: List of James Beard America's Classics. I suspect all of these are notable, and I think if we can get enough of those redlinks blue, we can even argue that the award itself is enough to get a restaurant over the hump. I've created probably a dozen so far, plus a few drafts at User:Valereee/To_Do#TD_America's_Classics which I feel like are just about over the hump if we consider the award, but I like to be safer than that. If you have any interest in doing some digging for any of those, I would sincerely appreciate it. I'm always happy to do the writing, at this point restaurant, chef, and food/dish articles, I can write in my sleep if I just can find the sources. Valereee (talk) 19:59, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

Autonomedia book about Franics Parker Yockey

The user by the name of user:Generalrelative, said that my one of my edits was too controversial a claim to be sourced by one of the two main books on the subject (published by Autonomedia), entitled Dreamer of the Day: Francis Parker Yockey and the Postwar Fascist Internationale. Although, the specific claim that Generalrelative chose to delete is no longer of interest to me (because they lack verifiable citations to that claim within the book itself), there are however several claims in the book about how Yockey was possibly involved in a war time Nazi spy operation against America known as Operation Pastorius, because these claims in the books have footnotes to the FBI records (which themselves) have a link on Yockey´s entry, I would look to add and not be told that they are too controversial to publish. StrongALPHA (talk) 10:10, 19 March 2023 (UTC)

Hey, @SA, so it looks like you're talking about this edit but you haven't tried discussing with the other editor yet? I'd recommend going to the talk page, pinging that editor to a section headed 'Autonomedia' or something, and discussing why they feel the edits are too controversial to be sourced to a book by that publisher. If the two of you can't come to some agreement, you can ask at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard, which is where the reliability of sources is discussed. It doesn't look like Autonomedia has been discussed there, has only been mentioned one time 15 years ago. Valereee (talk) 12:59, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
and what exactly is the URL of this article from 15 years ago? I would like to know, please. StrongALPHA (talk) 16:13, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
It's not an article, it's an archives of a discussion at RSN, and it's barely a mention, but it's at Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_2#Ebionites_archaeological_evidence Valereee (talk) 16:32, 19 March 2023 (UTC)

Hey, just wanted to drop a quick thanks for pointing out how we can work to combat gender disparities at DYK. Thanks for explaining your reasoning—in the future I'll make sure to more actively consider how I can help too. Wracking 💬 19:55, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

Thank you! I just wanted to explain why I didn't choose your own preferred hook! It's already an American-related article, and we tend to have a lot of those and very few that are related to non-English-speaking countries and disproportionately few related to women. And I love that you want to help with that! Valereee (talk) 20:01, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

Disappointed....

You don't have

The Joy of Cooking 1964 edition handy lol? On another note, I have been ignoring trade publications like Nation's Restaurant News but could they be helpful? S0091 (talk
) 18:06, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

hahaha...it's actually possible my mom had that edition. She did have a copy, and it was incredibly beat up.
Industry-niche publications can be very helpful for filling in details, definitely, but they're of limited value for proving notability unless the coverage is pretty unusual, like a cover story or something. Ditto local coverage; what I like to see for restaurants and chefs is two instances of sigcov that are outside both the local area and industry niche publications, especially if the restaurant is a going concern/the chef is alive. And I really look closely if the chef has 'celebrity chef' aspirations, as a silly number of them hire PR firms. (Note that there are editors who would disagree that this is necessary.) Valereee (talk) 18:40, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
Want to spin-up an article about Great Restaurants of America in your User space? You have it red-linked in some and I keep coming across it in my research so certain there are enough sources for an article. S0091 (talk) 18:07, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
Really? That would be great, I actually have a copy of it sitting right here from the library that I ordered for references. Valereee (talk) 18:17, 21 March 2023 (UTC)

Ugh, I hate when that happens...for me it's usually because while writing, I simply forgot to drop the source on the statement, and then when asked about it, I can't find it again. Valereee (talk) 12:41, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Name vio

I found this person's user name probably not acceptable, and their edits very unacceptable. Not sure where to report both but I will snoop. Bruxton (talk) 23:46, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

I'm not so concerned about the user name, that could actually be a real name. But the edit is a problem, and it's the only one they've ever made. Blocked for vandalism-only account. Valereee (talk) 10:16, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

DYK for Palmwood shipwreck

On 25 March 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Palmwood shipwreck, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that two dresses (one pictured) recovered from a 17th-century shipwreck may be the only such items in existence? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Palmwood shipwreck. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Palmwood shipwreck), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hook update
Your hook reached 11,486 views (957.2 per hour), making it one of the most viewed hooks of March 2023 – nice work!

Bruxton (talk) 23:54, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

Thanks, Bruxton! Pretty amazing for an article that's basically about a couple of dresses. :) Valereee (talk) 10:58, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
@Bruxton: it is nice work, to be sure, but the bar for image hooks was changed to 1,000vph some time ago :) theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/her) 18:48, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

DYK for Murders of Annette Cooper and Todd Schultz

On 29 March 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Murders of Annette Cooper and Todd Schultz, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Dale Johnston was declared innocent of the murder and dismemberment of his stepdaughter and her fiancé in 1982, 30 years after being sentenced to death for it? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Murders of Annette Cooper and Todd Schultz. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Murders of Annette Cooper and Todd Schultz), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Murders of Abigail Williams and Liberty German edit

Hello, you recently removed an edit [2] that had been previously discussed on the talk page Talk:Murders of Abigail Williams and Liberty German#Persons of interest and it had been decided to include him due to his contact with the victim, and he recently plead guilty to his charges (I had noted on the bottom of the talk page before adding the name, to try to prevent edit wars). I didn't know if you had seen that prior to your edit, but I didn't want to undo your edit without talking to you first and opening a dialogue :-)

Let's take it back to the talk. Valereee (talk) 17:45, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

discussions

Regarding this comment: as unsolicited advice, of course please feel free to ignore the following. Although I understand the intent of the question (is your statement expressing support or opposition to the proposal), perhaps you might in future considering not using "!vote" in this circumstance? As the programming logic "!" symbol is usually used before the word "vote" to emphasize that expressed opinions are comments engaging in discussion and not votes, it always feels discordant to me when someone asks if a statement is a !vote or comment. Plus since these are discussions, comments other than those expressing support or opposition also play a role in the deliberations by the one determining the outcome. I appreciate, though, that not everyone feels cognitive dissonance over this usage. isaacl (talk) 21:17, 1 April 2023 (UTC)

All I was looking for was to let UTBC know that a closer might not know what to do with their post. Valereee (talk) 22:20, 1 April 2023 (UTC)

CAN bus

Thanks for you comments on the CAN bus, ISO specs, etc. I'm not too concerned, I suppose, and it's certainly a detailed article! David10244 (talk) 06:46, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

Happy to help, and sorry I couldn't contribute with any knowledge of the subject! Still am not sure what a CAN bus even is. :D Valereee (talk) 10:38, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

Hey

I was gonna leave a short message regarding range calculations but my examples aren't working to my satisfaction. I'll get back to you shortly. If you want to explore on your own the gist is here. Tiderolls 15:35, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

I'm afraid you've effectively prevented me from participating there by canvassing me. Valereee (talk) 21:19, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
I'm sorry, I don't understand. "canvassing" you? The template said to paste this notification on relevant editors talk pages. What exactly did I do wrong and what should I have done?--K.Nevelsteen (talk) 19:53, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
Wait, I think I might understand. Because I posted this on your talk page, it could be used as a sign to gain your favor. Is that correct? I actually posted it on your talk page, because you were one of the latest editors who edited the article. If that was an error. My apologies.--K.Nevelsteen (talk) 19:55, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
I also don't understand your latest edit asking for a better source for Nabongo's book. The sentence simply states she is the author, isn't the existence of the book enough to confirm she is the author?--K.Nevelsteen (talk) 19:53, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
@K.Nevelsteen, the existence of the book isn't enough to justify including it in the article. We want to see that there's some reason to include it, especially in the lead. If no one is talking about the book, it may not be worth mentioning. Valereee (talk) 19:55, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
I see. Ok, thanks! =) K.Nevelsteen (talk) 19:56, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

Amazing work on Jessica Nabongo and Woni Spotts, Thanks!--K.Nevelsteen (talk) 07:23, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

Errant AfC reviewer

I want to wait until they've either responded to or clearly ignored the discussion at

Draft:Harvard Library of Early Ukrainian Literature). signed, Rosguill talk
22:42, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

I think that draft was an autobiography, but the attempt to hide was pretty thin. Subject Adam Hegsted, account name AdWikisted. I'd be surprised if the editor who accepted the article is anything but just someone who hasn't figured out what they're supposed to be looking for when accepting/rejecting and thinks they're helping clear the backlog by moving fast. Valereee (talk) 22:53, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
And hahahahaha on the rationale at HLoEUL. Um, no, spelling and grammar seem to be good there. :D Valereee (talk) 22:54, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
...and here I thought Ad meant advertising. They actually properly complied with disclosing their COI. signed, Rosguill talk 22:55, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
