It also appears to be copied almost exactly from the site located at the included external link. I don't see any copyright statement on that site, but lacking a statement that the text is under a compatible license, I think your draft may be a copyright infringement, and might end up quickly deleted. Thanks for your comments. Although I must confess I don't completely understand. I have created the article in my sandbox but moved it to a separate page to give it a title. I can move it to the Draft space it that is what I should do.

The article is supported by the references at the end all of which are published secondary sources that verify the content of the article. Can you please explain what the problem is. There is no article on Wikipedia for Adaptive Noise Cancelling that explains the concept or points to the history of its invention. The article is intended to address this deficiency. @Kaunitzj If someone who owns or manages a website which they are citing as a source, they would need to place a permanent statement on that website (or on the relevant pages, at least) releasing that content under a CC-By-SA licence, permitting its re-use, even commercial. Alternatively, Kaunitzj, you can simply place {{subst:AFC submission/submit}} at the top of your user space draft and the reviewer will move it to draft space for you (see Wikipedia:So you made a userspace draft). Or you could simply move the article directly to mainspace yourself, but I think you'd run into some problems - it may get moved back to draft or proposed for deletion. The lead is way too detailed. It should be a succinct summary in two paragraphs (See
WP:LEAD
).
The main content is way, way, way too long and far, far, far too technical.
WP:NOTABILITY
needs to be based on sources independent of you, the author of these references. Show me how the ‘world at large’ has noticed and written about this concept. The only source ‘’not’’ written by you is a book mentioned in the last few sentences. Find three others that talk about it, and base the article on them, not on scientific papers or websites you’ve published.
Aim your language at a 16-17 yr high school student, not at someone who has already immersed themselves in a subject for a lifetime.
Your own userpage makes your
WP:COI
fairly evident, but is written in the 3rd person, not the first person. Please fix that, and make it a single, brief paragraph, not a detailed biography.
Less is more.

I would echo Nick Moyes' recommendation that you word it as though you were trying to retain the attention of a high school student who didn't have a particular interest driving them to your subject. A normal conversational tone that's neither too dry nor too boosterish. Right now, it reads as though you're writing for a patent examiner, which is its own, very specialized, tone, and not the one you want to strike here. Whitewashing. Sockpuppetry?

It appears that certain users are continually removing anything that could be construed as negative. For example the adware and dark pattern "claims" which are actually facts that are backed up by more than one citation and reference. Anyone care to elaborate? What usually happens when certain users repeatedly try to whitewash an article? While there is no direct evidence of sockpuppetry yet, these users appear to be associated with the article's subjectmatter in some way. The article in question is MacUpdate. Bigmaaac (talk)

@Bigmaaac: You should certainly remove PR puffery from articles on-sight. However, when removing or adding content, please do not mark your edits as "minor" (as you did here for instance) - "minor" edits are corrections of spelling, table formatting etc. which do not change the information a reader would acquire by reading the article.

I think you are in the right regarding whether to include spamware etc. accusations against MacUpdate, but you are certainly in the wrong by just reverting it without much of an explanation. I would suggest to open a discussion on the talk page, and if nobody objects within a few days you can put your version back in place, otherwise follow the steps listed at

Merge or move proposal

I made a post at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Chess_problem, here's a summary.

Chess puzzle and chess problem seem to be the same thing, despite what chess puzzle says. So maybe merge chess puzzle into chess problem?

But chess puzzle is more often used than chess problem, so maybe move chess problem into chess puzzle (chess puzzle doesn't have much information)?

What to do about permanently dead link?

Hey, folks. I recenetly came across the article for Bam Thwok and noticed that it had some dead links, so I decided to find archives of them, but one seems to have been excluded from archive.org, and no other archives of it seem to exist. Seeing as a lot of the information in the article is attributed to it (including direct quotes), what should be done here? Re. the FA process, Bam Thwok was made a Featured article in 2007 and doesn't seem to have been reassessed since; the process has become a lot stricter since then so it is quite possible that it would not be considered up to today's standards – I see a {{citation needed}} tag on it, for instance, which would need to be addressed.

Re. fixing dead links, I was able to find a source to replace the dead Aversion link in one case (here) – editors more familiar with the subject matter might be more able to help in the other cases. Caeciliusinhorto-public (talk) 12:45, 9 December 2021 (UTC)

Kent Dominic Looks like a problem with some of the servers on the Internet path from you to Wikipedia (ATS = Apache Traffic Server), rather than with Wikipedia or that particular article. Hello AverroesII and welcome to the Teahouse. Yes, you can use multiple infoboxes, and the best way to do that is to embed them - see Wikipedia:WikiProject Infoboxes/embed. In this case, I think it would be easiest to start out with Template:Infobox person and then embed the other two infoboxes (Template:Infobox philosopher and Template:Infobox spy) into it using its module parameters. The answer, always, is "what do the sources say?". If one is consistent with the sources and the other not, you know which one to alter. If the sources say differently, and both appear reliable, it may be appropriate to edit both to say that the sources are inconsistent. So either use the date the jury recommended the death sentence, the date the judge formally sentenced Roof to death, or both dates and indicate which is which. Architecture Firm, New

Getting my architectural page approved - Thank you to everyone who collaborated on a response to my questions on my page. Thanksgiving week has thrown me off schedule a little, but I’m trying to jump back into this and really dig in on this. One giant clarification, yes, I am a paid employee of SJCF, but I am not attempting to write this page because I am being specifically paid to. It is a labor of love for me, as I am now one of the old timers here.

I have taken all of your suggestions and am re-doing another draft. It’s difficult…we’ve been in business for more than 60 years, and we have breadth of coverage in the media, spanning a large amount of time, but not depth in articles. Bob Schaefer (our original ‘Schaef’) was a humble man who eschewed publicity..he liked for our buildings to speak for him. Even to this day, in many articles in our local media, you’ll see ‘courtesy photo’ under one of our renderings…and it is driving me crazy as I attempt to pull this together. Additionally, while the NY Times might have an architecture critic, most Kansas papers do not, and so in-depth architectural coverage is largely non-existent. Another clarification on the article one of you mentioned that talks about ‘reusing furniture’…that article also talked about the challenges presented in managing a school bond issue during the great recession in 2008. How do I remove template messages?

Hi! Hope you all are having a good day. I'm quite new to this process and I have a few questions. These days, when I see a template message that says something like "This plot summary may be too long...", I edit the plot summary below to make it more concise. What do I do then? Can I remove the message? I think you can remove them by clicking on them in the visual editor, but this doesn't always work, specially when the box is within a table of contents. The visual editor thinks you're trying to click on the table itself. Same thing with the messages that say "citation needed". Yes, if you believe you've fixed the problem, you can remove the template (and if you get pushback, that's when conversation and consensus - ideally - happen). I don't use the visual editor, so I can't help you there; in source mode I just find the "PROBLEM HERE" marker between its curly brackets and delete the whole thing, leaving some relevant comment in the summary to show I'm not just randomly removing maintenance templates.. In source editor (which you can ensure is always offered to you by setting your Preferences to show both editing tool options) you find the template text between double curly brackets {{}}. Use |author1=, |author2=, |author3=, |author4=, |author5= to display all five
Use |last1=|first1=, |last2=|first2=, |last3=|first3=, |last4=|first4=, |last5=|first5= to display all five
Choose one of the above and use |display-authors= to display a designated number of authors (e.g. |display-authors=2 will display only the first two authors)
|display-authors=etal displays all authors in the list followed by et al.

Will redirect cause a problem?

I am currently researching a new article on the 19th century children's magazine The Little Corporal. I checked Wikipedia to see if there is already an article with this name, and discovered

There's a numbered list on First Council of Nicaea, under Promulgation of canon law, that I'm struggling to format correctly; I've looked in the style guides, but I can't find anything covering this. In the text, it appears as:

What exactly does the tag (cleaning up COI / citespam) mean?

Greetings Wikipedians. Would you be kind enough to tell me if "(cleaning up COI / citespam)" is an 'official' way to explain changes to an article, and if so what does it mean? I think it means that the text of the article wasn't changed, just citations which are viewed as spammy or in conflict, is my view on this correct?

FWIW this isn't about an edit I made, just have seen it on several pages.

I don't engage that editor. an engagement with this editor over an erroneous post on their part, and trying to help them not break the 3R rule, combined with the unfortunate state of some admins who don't understand the idea of conflict resolution, simply for actually following to the the letter WP rules, receive a 'permanent' ban, which only my personal connection with the Almighty himself (the one in the sky, not the one who started the encyclopedia) caused me to be an editor again... Images from US government websites?

Yes, that's the correct process and allows the image to be used in all Wiki projects, including other-language versions. Ankry, I don't know if something more is going on, but when I spot-checked the users in the AbuseFilter log it was mostly users with a few dozen edits on a Wikipedia and no obvious spam. For example: w:fr:Spécial:Contributions/Matteo.Rohner, w:tr:Özel:Katkılar/Bruheradam, w:fr:Spécial:Contributions/Zizou72, w:fr:Spécial:Contributions/FlyChickenFly and w:uk:Спеціальна:Внесок/Maks of Kharkiv who is a rollbacker on ukwiki with 1000+ edits, seems rather unprobable for a spammer. Many from France so either your spammer is French or there is a campaign on frwiki to promote wikisource. Ankry, or I could be wrong. Matteo.Rohner got registered at 18:25 and triggered the AF at the same time. Possibly they had multiple dormant tabs open. And maybe !(action == "autocreateaccount") should use = instead of ==? Seeking help in replacing album infobox image

The scan of File:Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark album cover.jpg[9] was misaligned, creased, dim, and shadowy around its edges, so I uploaded a much crisper version (still low-res and meeting the same upload criteria as the first). The original upload was from Discogs.com, while my replacement was from semi-official Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark fansite Messages.[10] However my new version is not showing in Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (album). "notability"_and_"citation"_guidelines

Hello, this is in response to User:Scope creep. The first article I have contributed "Gregg Hill (jazz composer)" has been flagged for "notability" and "needs more citations from reliable, independent sources" and was moved to draftspace. I have cited 2 independent articles on the composer (a newspaper article and liner notes of a major commercial jazz release by Rodney Whitaker who has his own Wikipedia page. So at the very least Gregg Hill(jazz composer) should be connected to that page if he doesn't yet merit his own article, correct? Can you tell me if the sources I have are indeed not appropriate, or where the issues are in the article in terms of content and tone if any? Please advise the best course of action or connect me with someone who can help this article meet standards before submitting for review? Donations

The reason I quit donating is because wikipedia quit being neutral, preferring to engage in politics and censorship of truth to influence users toward a political ideology. At that point the credibility and trust was destroyed. It's a very sad decision you made. It will take a long time to heal if Wikipedia ever decides to regain scruples. Nagging for donations is irritating because in the nagging, there is no way to give feedback such as this. In fact, as it turns out, there is no way to give feedback at all actually. WP:AIV. You can use Twinkle to automate that process, too. My tip with troublesome editors was to keep a tab open for each one and keep coming back to see if they've editing again. So revert and warn; watch, revert and warn again; until final level warning is exceeded. For bad vandalism I'd ignore the first level warning and judge whether or not to start with a 2nd level or (rarely) a 3rd or only warning - but do that only sparingly for the very worst, offensive abuses. Blaze The Wolf If you read the RCP page, you'll see the OP has slightly confused what is required. There's no mention there of tagging vandalism. However, bad edits can be tagged with such things as ^[who?], ^{[according to whom?]}, ^{[clarification needed]},^{[citation needed]}, ^{[failed verification]} etc according to how poor the edit is, and assuming it's not so bad that it would be best to revert it. All vandalism should be removed immediately it is detected. There are times when one can't be sure whether or not it's vandalism, so tagging a poor edit can be appropriate. My tip for good Recent Change patrolling is not to lurk at the top of the list all the time (everyone does, it seems), but look much lower down the list for things like changes to school articles (they get lots of vandalism); edit summaries like "fixed it" or "fixed typo" are obvious flags to be checked (use Ctrl-F to search the list for these keywords).

Use the ORES colour indicators to spot the most likely issues, and check the contributions of all editors who you revert, as one bad edit can reveal a pattern of many others. Keep monitoring their contributions, and even consider temporarily adding an article to your watchlist for a week to keep any eye on subsequent edits they might come back and make there.

Here are my favourite Recent Changes settings which filter out the least troublesome edits and flag up only the most likely to be problematic.

I also strongly advise enabling 'Navigation Popups' in Preferences>Gadgets] as this lets you very quickly view diffs, hist, IP contributions and other information just by hovering over the relevant link on the Recent Changes page - something the default mouse hover function does not offer you. And just a comment: the world desperately needs people who are prepared to check facts rather than just compete for the high-score on rapid reversions. The worst mess-ups in Wikipedia aren't the idiots who decide to tout their political views, write rude things about companies that have upset them, or praise their favourite sports personality. The worst mess-ups are the people who insert facts that might be right, but aren't quite, into a sentence that's already got a reference (which supports what the sentence originally said, not the new thing someone's just added). A common scenario is when an IP editor changes a birth-date by just one year. The RC-patrollers get all excited because they see "Possible vandalism or BLP issue" and an IP address, and someone knee-jerk-reverts as fast as they can hit their twinkle button, to make sure they get in first. But it's just possible the IP address editor actually knows what they're talking about. What the world needs is someone prepared to take the time to do some Google searching and see if just possibly the change is a correction. It often won't be, but surely it's better to check. As the title says, my article has been waiting to be reviewed for 2 months now. Is there any way to expedite the process? I have been very much patient with my efforts. I understand Teahouse is not for reviewers, but can anyone give me a timeframe on how long I could be waiting since it has already been 2 months. When editors disagree

This isn't a question about the formal conflict resolution processes Wikipedia offers; I'm aware of them. I'd just like to ask if anyone more experienced than I am knows of a satisfying way to deal with people who won't be persuaded. Most of my edits are small and non-controversial, but occasionally I feel the need to make a change to an article that ends with me disagreeing with some specific person who presumably has it on their watchlist. In these situations, the other person usually gets their way because they're willing to put more energy into arguing their point than I can spare arguing mine. It's depressing to spend half an hour making changes and then being asked to essentially write a legal brief on top of that in order for your changes to stick. I'm not trying to call anyone out here: this has happened to me a few times on a few wide-ranging subjects, so I suspect it's uncommon but universal. Is there any way to make this easier? Some editors toe the line of being juuust tendentious enough to ward others off editing certain areas; I think we've all ran into these in our time.

However, I can also understand the frustration of someone coming along and making a very large-scale change to an article without discussing it first; I know I've often opened my watchlist and thought 'ah fuck, what now', as these edits often take a good while to revert and dig through, especially if it's not clear what's been usefully added and what needs to go.

My advice would be that some articles are more stress than they're worth, but if you're running into arguments this often, you might want to consider proposing your changes, or even just leaving a note of what you plan to do, on the Talk page before editing, and mention that in your edit summary. It tends to make everything a lot easier.--

It's also worth bearing in mind that Wikipedia is not the only source of information in the world. In fact quite often it's not the top Google-hit. So if you encounter one of those articles where someone just bores you into submission by mildly-patronising quibbles about everything you add, or vague hints that they have access to sources and knowledge that you do not, and (my favourite) pseudo-mentoring encouragement with suggestions that you are of course quite right to try to improve the article and you should just go off and do some reading up and write it the way they suggest, then remind yourself: they can have their personal narrow-minded puddle of mediocrity in Wikipedia if they like; someone with a broader view will be writing something better, somewhere else, and it too will appear in Google searches. I noticed that Luxlife had also deleted some unsouced content, I then deleted this myself after the revert. We do not remove content solely because a subject of the article does not like it. It was an extortion attempt by the accuser. The PD privately dropped the case, but neither Jack or I have seen any published articles stating that, so I can't add a citing. I will not add citing links to my The Life of Luxury site, even though I am not being paid for this. I can reference other sources. We both have serious health issues and are helping each other. Dear all, a few months ago, I tried to create my first ever Wkipedia page. To my knowledge I followed the instructions, and was able to submit the page for approval. I even received a welcome email from Wikipedia which included advice on posting and editing. However, in spite of this, a good deal more than 7 weeks (which I thought was how long I would have to wait) have passed, and I have still heard no news about my page, whether it has been accepted, or what I need to do. NewManila2000: We'd prefer it if you didn't. Translation software still has major flaws so that it cannot completely replace a human writer, so do not rely solely on software to do the work for you. You may use it as a tool to help you, but in my opinion, if you cannot translate text without help, you probably aren't fluent enough in that other language to write a quality English article. Note that translations must still meet the English Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. I'm afraid that if you no longer have the password or access to the email, then there is no way of recovering your old account (I see you have created a new one); but as Claudine says, you can do everything that you did on your old account with your new one - including editing your old user page and any sandboxes, if you wish. Another possibly useful tool, Itcouldbepossible is to go into the "Page information" link on the menu next to the article and, from there, click on the timestamp on the "Date of page creation". This will show the actual OID corresponding to the first version of the page — which can be a revelation for very heavily edited old pages. On my browser, when I visit the page Scribonius Aphrodisius, there is a list of menu items on the left of the visible article, starting with the Wikipedia logo and then continuing with links to various other stuff. Even this Teahouse page has them. One of these links (under Tools) is "Page information". Clicking on that takes me to detailed information about the page being viewed. For Scribonius Aphrodisius, this has information including that it was first created on 22 February 2016: clicking on that timestamp takes you here to the very first version of the page. There is no AfC banner in this case, which is confirmed using the "view history" tab also available along the top right of all pages (mobile phone versions may be different, I'm describing my PC). That article hasn't been edited very much so its first creation timestamp is easily visible at the bottom of the history page and we see that it was created directly in Main Space by Fordmadoxfraud. Article declined for the second time when it meets notability criteria 1

I need help. this situation has turned into something that's bigger than me. For the second time around my article has been declined even when I stated in the comments that the subject meets the notable criteria under option 1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(music)#Criteria_for_musicians_and_ensembles The reviewers are overlooking this and just declined the article for a billboard chart lyric when the claim to notable was not charting. The claim is for the subject appearing in multiple magazine articles independent of the subject. So can someone please help me. I can't wrap my head around how are reviewers able to ignore the criteria and continue to deny the article. I waited 2 months for a review and the reviewer does not look at the fact that the subject is notable in other categories. At this point I feel I need to be helped by someone in high position to look this over. Toosoon says that if subject does not have reliable independent sources then it's to soon for a article. The subject has over 3 reliable sources plastered at the top of the page which are from magazine articles. Hi all. My first visit here. I have been enjoying writing and editing for a week now. It was helpful to study the structure of other articles and I read through the helpful links that I received on my talk page from User:I dream of horses I also used the edit guide from my own home page, very helpful! I have written a number of articles and lists that I think follow all the guides, but I think I should pause after writing Patrick Cunnane. It is a biography of a living person and it seems there are more requirements for this type of article. I am hoping someone can look at it for me. I am also hoping I did not violated the biography requirements, and that there are enough references in the article.

Bruxton I read through your article, but I wasn’t told why Patrick Cunnane is notable. In your second sentence I was told he was CEO of a business that went bankrupt. I learned he was taken to a sit-in protest when he was eleven, he attended community college before obtaining a degree in history, he managed a business pressured by President Trump’s tariffs, and his wife is a congressman. I wanted to learn why he was in a Hall of Fame, but the citation required me to enter my email before reading a free article, and I won’t do that.

I didn’t check all of your references but 1 and 10 are about family members, 3 gives the first sentence of an article to non-subscribers, 6 lists him as being a speaker at a conference, and 8 states his business was sold at a bankruptcy sale. If being a CEO of a bicycle business makes him notable, then tell why he is more important than other people who run businesses. You will need to find some references that tell about his life, instead of just giving him a mention in passing. You did a great deal of work on your article, and you formatted everything correctly. As a separate issue, your draft about the book "Ocean Prey" was declined, you did edits, and then you moved it to main space yourself rather than resubmitting to AfC. See Ocean Prey. I strongly recommend that after a decline, a draft be revised and resubmitted. The fact that it was declined indicates weaknesses that you are too close to the topic to see. As for the Cunnane article - which was created in mail space without going through AfC - I agree that there was content not relevant to his purported notability, and weak references. A couple of things to bear in mind.

You need to show that this person meets wikipedias defintion of a Notable person, you do this by showing that the person has been covered in reliable sources that are independent of the article subject, think of things like news coverage, mentions in books and magazine articles. At the moment you have sourced this to his own podcast, his own book, his linked in profile and a website he writes for. None of these are considered independent.
Per
WP:BLP
all information in biographies of living people needs to be backed up by a reliable source, things like dates of birth, spouses, children etc need to be backed up by inline citations.
You should not have external links in the main text of the article, these should be in a separate "external links" section at the bottom of the page.
The page could use a light copyedit for tone, there are parts of it that are rather promotional (e.g. "A nationally recognized expert") and a few too many quotations from the article subject in my opinion.

The biggest issue you need to address is the first point - you need to find some independant coverage of this person or the article won't be accepted by a reviewer and would probably end up deleted if moved to article space. Hope this helps, 192.76.8.80 (talk) 16:53, 11 December 2021 (UTC)

Hello, Ilias.stavrakas, and welcome to the Teahouse. Because of the nature of Wikipedia, "professional help" hardly exists. There are certainly people who will take your money to create a Wikipedia article: perhaps some of them are honest, and will be open about the fact that they cannot guarantee that they can create an article that will be accepted, or that if they do the article will contain what you want it to contain; many are scammers.

The problem with your user page and sandbox were that they were copyright violations: you need to start right from the beginning using your own words, not the words of an existing resource.

If you want advice and assistance from experienced Wikipedia editors (all of whom are volunteers) here is a good place to ask. I advise starting with some of the links that EDM fan 2 has already put on your user talk page, especially

,or you risk having all your work wasted. If you are writing about yourself, your department, or your work, those sources will not include anything written or published by you or your institution. It is unlikely that your own website will be of much use to you in any article that you write.

Wiki entry entry for 'James Michie' poet and contributor to the Spectator.

In the last few days the Wiki entry for James Michie, poet and contributor to the Spectator has been changed. For more than a year the entry correctly noted that in his poem Friendly Fire, Michie called for the 'comprehensive extermination' of the Scottish Race and Nation of six million souls. The reference to the poet's call for genocide which had been part of the Wiki entry for more than a year has been removed on about 9th December 2021. As the claim that Michie was demanding genocide was clearly correct why was it removed. As this call for the extermination of every Scot was published by Spectator Editor and Conservative Leader Boris Johnson it is likely that their will be attempts to remove the references to genocide for political reasons. WWW was deleted so long ago (2011) that there is no relevance to you wanting to create an article. If you feel that based on your experience, you can create a valid article without needing to go through draft/AfC, then do it. Worst case - New Pages Patrol flips it to draft. I.hate.spam.mail.here: Deleting pages doesn't save any server space, the wikipedia database never actually deletes anything, it just flags it as deleted. Any administrator can undelete the page for you upon request. Whether you want to delete pages is a personal choice up to you. Hi there, I’m trying to link the Wikipedia article for the Canadian restaurant Harvey’s on the Wikipedia article for the parent company Recipe Unlimited but when I format it normally the link is red when published. When I remove the apostrophe, the link goes to the disambiguation page. I’m not sure why Harvey’s isn’t linking to the correct article. I believe the format matches the actual articles title. Cyberbullying?

Hi I’m an IP address who occasionally edits Wikipedia, when I see mistakes or see things I feel could be improved. But, for reasons that are unclear, I am being relentlessly followed around by an editor who is undoing every edit I do, giving vague reasons for doing so that are almost always inapplicable. At first, I altered what I’d written when I restored my edits to cater to what they said I had done wrong, but then they undid it again anyway. Their username is Unbh, and despite having just thirty or so edits, they seem very experienced on Wikipedia. A sock puppet perhaps? Often the recommendation is to provide valid references for your additions, or take disputed content to the Talk pages of those article versus reverting the reverts. Managing Mischievous Editing 2

I accept your point that I should not be making major edits to Death of Eleanor de Freitas on the grounds that I am an interested party, and I have not done so. Curiously, all contributions to the article involving references 10, 16, 19, 41, 44 & 50 are from, or directed by, the man whom Eleanor alleged raped her, and this includes the blog website cited as an external source. On this basis, when the major edit is done, by an independent academic source citing mostly an article that has been published (some 3 years ago) in an academic law review (ref 27) all the above references will be replaced with independent sources, mostly, or just deleted if they are already dealt with elsewhere. My concern, as in the past, is that this other interested party or his associates will attempt to undo this major edit as has happened in the past. How do we prevent this and repost the major edit without difficulty? In the course of submitting article Draft: Servants of Christ the King, I have had two reviewers comment that the organisation probably is notable, but, all that is written and published (including in reputable newspapers) about it is written by members. I wondered, if the book 'Treasury of Blessings' 2015 had been published by an independent company rather than self-published, would that make a difference or would its authorship (it is written by a past warden and member) still prevent ? Converting an existing Wikipedia article from another language to English

Hi, I tried converting this article from the French Wikipedia: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abish_Brodt to English: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Abish_Brodt

The rest of the info is either directly from the French version, or data from the actual cassettes & CD's.

Being that he's only in the Orthodox Jewish music world, I can't see how I can show that he's a "major impact" worldwide. Yet by the religious community he is one of the largest singers. He was one of the main singers at the past few Siyum HaShas (The largest event in Orthodox Judaism today). Any quick search for "abish brodt siyum hashas" online will prove that.

And certainly "Regesh" (he's the lead singer) is a household name in every religious home. Question on convention on dates in article titles

Many articles, such as 2020 United States presidential election, specify first the year and then the topic whose appearance in that year is being studied.

My inquiry is

how to create an article title that also specifies the month, such as

- 202010 Event
- 2020.10 Event
- 2020(10) Event
- 2020 (October) Event
- October 2020 Event

How important is it to express a month as a number rather than a word?

Has anyone discussed whether a movement or ongoing event should be titled with its first day (which may be not very important) or the month?

I'm deliberately not putting here the events I'm thinking of so as not to have the discussion affected by consideration of whether the events in question deserve separate articles. Logosvenator wikiensis, it has two extra pairs of close-braces. as you can probably see above. Apart from that it looks correct. In my experience, constructing cladograms of any size is really difficult. I believe there are some editors who have tools to help them, but I don't know who. @Logosvenator wikiensis: Each Clade template can only generate one level of branches, to do what you want you need to nest multiple layers of templates inside each other. Each template takes a parameter that should appear at the end of each branch (these are the numbered parameters) and a label that along the branch (these are the label parameters) Try this

So working from the outside in, we have the first Clade template which contains 1 branch, labeled "Megaraptora". At the end of that branch we have another clade template with 2 branches, one of which ends at "Fukuiraptor" and one of which is labeled "Megaraptoridae" and leads to another clade template. This final Clade template just contains a load of branches leading to the individual species with no labels. To add images to the ends you just add a standard image code after the name, e.g. you might have |2=''Tratayenia'' [[File:Example.png]]. This isn't a question that can really be answered. As a rule, it's very rare for a title that's been salted to end up having an article on it later on, and when that happens the result is generally not deleted. Page titles are salted because they've either had multiple terrible articles written on them that have had to be deleted, because they're being used by a sock farm to evade their ban, or because they're being used to further an external harassment campaign. How Can I Improve my draft for approval?

Hello House, I have had my article rejected twice; once for not having adequate citations. I fixed that(or I think I did) and now rejected for sounding promotional. The editors(s) accepted I have independent sources but the article seem promotional. I don't want to submit it again for the third time and miss it. Therefore, if anybody can point me to how best I can rephrase the article to make it suitable for approval. The draft in question is Draft:5irechain. Thank you. As you are paid to do this, you shouldn't be asking for preferential treatment by the unpaid volunteers – we do this in our spare time, you know. The list of funding companies is promotional trivia. The introductory paragraph is still basically an advert. The "etymology" section is promotionally written (and is not about etymology). Hi there.

I am putting together a page of an artist (a dancing - acting - modelling - choreographing professional) who's work is known/notable around the world (associated with big ballet companies - tv companies). I have followed William John Banks' career for quite some time and it has recently been announced that he will be performing on Broadway next year. For that reason, I feel now is the most perfect occasion to produce this.

Every detail I have written is factual but each time I attempt to publish, the page is later edited with the text deleted by someone (I am wondering if it is admin?). What's additionally strange is that the page for William John Banks is then redirected to another page with a similar name: being William John Bankes. All you have to do is load up a Google search and type in William John Banks to see that he exists - so it is oddly that their name would be redirected to another. I will paste below what I have attempted to publish.

My first time in Wikipedia

I am the new intern at the Little Museum of Dublin and I have been asked by the management to add references to the museum on other Wikipedia pages. This is my first time using Wikipedia and I don't know how to add relevant references. For now, here are the Wikipedia pages I would like to edit:

Have a look at the page Little Museum of Dublin, and suggest constructive changes on the talk page. To do so, edit Talk:Little Museum of Dublin, create a new section, start it by the magic code {{request edit}}, and propose changes in a "change X to Y, add Z, remove W" format. For instance, the article says the museum was nominated in 2012 for the European Museum of the Year award, but without citation - if you can find a citation if it is true or ask for removal if it is not, that would surely improve the article. @Itcouldbepossible: Manual archiving basically filling out the relevant parameters in the citation template, like |archive-url= and |archive-date. The documentation for each citation template like {{cite web}} explains which parameter is which. However, there's a tool that makes archiving much easier. Go to the page history, and you'll find a "Fix dead links" link near the top. It is just my studied opinion that both Rush's music and lyrics represent unique contributions to the genre. My edit keeps getting reverted on the Elon Musk page

Hi lovely people,

My Edit on the Elon Musk page keeps getting reverted. I dispute that he has spread misinformation, but respect that his views are politically controversial.

He has not spread "misinformation" regarding the Covid-19 pandemic and I believe this was the contributor's opinion, however he does hold some interesting views on the subject which I mentioned and referenced.

Please see my edit which referenced numerous articles relating to these views. Should I re-do it, but changing covid-19 misinformation to "controversial views relating to Covid restrictions", then give his political views in relation to these and the population issue in a different section?. There are lots of articles on it. It is easily referenced.

I note that someone mentioned that it shouldn't be in the introductory section. I'm inclined to agree, so whatever we decide to do about the Covid views, I think it should be moved to lower on the page.

Everything I mentioned in the edit was correctly sourced and included direct quotations, I didn't provide any opinion. If someone would like to tell me where they think an unreferenced opinion has been published, I'll make sure that I clearly source it.

Unfortunately this doesn't look like balanced information at present, so it would be good if we can form a consensus about what should be included.

@PingingA: To use redwarn at all you need to be autoconfirmed, which means you must have made at least 10 edits and have had your account for at least 4 days. To use some of the more powerful features you need to be extendedconfirmed, which means that you must have made 500 edits and have had your account for 30 days. Hi there. During some recent changes patrol, I saw a user remove a large chunk of text from Afro-Mexicans. They are insisting I revert my change. I just made my ten thousandth edit. Yay! I was curious. @Engineersone88 Wikipedia is not a gentle place. 'It' has a habit of giving as good as it gets if poked with a stick. But it is a collegial place if treated 'right'.

I've left you some thoughts on your own talk page. Probably there is better than in more open forum.

The main advice is to double check that sentences you have used are not accidental or intended close paraphrasing of external sources. The reason editors here are hot on that is that copyright infringement, even accidental, can get Wikipedia into a slew of problems. Image Copyright question

I have been working on a page and would like to include a scanned copy (photograph) of the cover of a magazine / course catalogue that was from a business that closed over 40 years ago. I worked for the company but was not the editor of the magazine. I have been through many of the Wikipedia question forums and cannot find anything that clearly says I can or can not use this image. Hi @IainEdwards. I'm not an expert either, but this would seem to fall into a grey area of non-free content use (see this for some examples of what is/is not allowed). The cover itself is probably still under copyright. In an article about the magazine itself, it would be usable with the appropriate rationale; in an article about the company, it's murkier. If you have a section in the article specifically talking about the magazine, that would be a good rationale for use of the image. Also, I assume you'd be taking/have taken the photograph yourself? stating elevation variation

I'm writing a new article for a place and I haven't been able to find a definitive citation for the elevation above sea level. I've input the average and references for information.

I attempted to add '±18' to show the margin of error (in metres) but this causes a formatting error when parsed because it interferes with the automatic unit conversion (to feet)

Is over-citing a bad thing? How much is too far?

Hi there, i'm working to get a few more articles some more citations, eventually taking the long-road to getting to at-least a GA state. I've noticed that in some FA's that there is much citing, and it almost feels like too much citing. Take

this former FA article for example. On almost every sentence there is a citation, the article being a radio station it makes sense to have more of a play-by-play history. I was reading the page on Smart contracts and as I am interested in the technology, I noticed that one of the subsections, "Difference from smart legal contracts" should be split to create a separate page, entitled "Smart contracts".

As the existing page is related to blockchain/crypto, I didn't to jump in an act straight away, instead posting my question on the talk page. Could someone please give advice on how to, either, go about getting the discussion going on the page, or, alternatively, answer my question here?

My basis for the need for a new page is that I think users could be easily confused by the current page, and the creation of a new page would reflect guidance from the UK Law Commission. ^[1] ^[2] ^[3]

It has been nine weeks now that my article has been waiting for review. What puzzles me is that two weeks after I submitted it some person, apparently in authority, went through it and made various changes. Presumably this person thought it could be published because otherwise what would be the point of changing it? So why could this person not pass it for publication? Advice on fixing an error in an article image

The article DNA and RNA codon tables contains an image Genetický kód.jpg that contains an error, as explained at Talk:DNA_and_RNA_codon_tables#DNA_Image. The image originally comes from a third party, the Human Genome Project, although the link in the image metadata is broken. The error seems significant to me, so I'd like to fix it, but I'm not sure what is the best approach. I looked at Wikipedia:Inaccuracy, Wikipedia:Accuracy_dispute, and Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Images but didn't find anything applicable. Options I see:

Look for a different image, possibly in a different source, that could serve as a replacement. Cons include the possibility of a long search and sorting out copyrights if one is found.
Use an image editor to fix the error. Cons include difficulty of matching the existing style and possibly muddying the attribution chain, although the image in question is public domain. If I go this route, should I upload the fix (to Commons) under the same file name, thereby fixing it for all users (it is currently wrong regardless of context), or a new file name?
Create a new image myself that is similar but has the error fixed. Cons include possibly failing to meet desired aesthetic standards.

@Smcpeak74: Yeah, that's a pretty bad mistake there. Out of your three options, the third (re-create an image) is likely your best bet. Your new image doesn't have to be super pretty, it just has to convey the information clearly and accurately. You should use c:Template:Own based in this scenario. As for the other two options, existing images with a compatible copyright are hard to come by. You could potentially edit the image, but the background has a texture, and I don't think it'll be pretty (unless you're really good at Photoshop). If you actually do this, I'd upload it as a new image and include c:Template:Derived from and c:Template:Derivative versions in the image information. ◢ Ganbaruby!  (talk) 05:43, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

Editing articles with multiple issues

Hello! New editor- it's been just a little while and I'm intrigued :) One question- when editing an article with multiple issues, is it common courtesy to try and fix more than one if the issues intersect? I wouldn't think so, but the article I chose to edit here was in need of many spelling and grammar fixes, so I went ahead and copy edited it. The issue is, some of the text that was disputed for not having Npov was more than likely part of the spelling and grammar issues, but I admittedly don't have enough knowledge of the material the article is about to fix the neutrality issues, so I simply left them alone.

Hello IP editor. Don't forget the year of publication and edition number when you click the "Cite" button in the editing tool you're using, and make sure you choose the best template to fill in (web/book/news/journal are the most commonly used ones). I couldn't see any Vol 1 on Google books when I looked. Maybe it wasn't called that at the time - only after Vol II was produced?

If you are likely to want to cite different pages of the same publication within one article, you might also like to read

WP:REFNAME which allows you to allocate a memorable name to your citation (e.g. Budge1), then call it up multiple times, and simply add page numbers afterwards, like this ^[1]^: 311, and then reuse it with a different page number like this.^[1]^: 47 Note that the citation only appears once in the reference list, which avoids the horror of multiple citation entries to the same work. Nick Moyes, I too hadn't been aware of it till a few minutes before posting the message above. And I only looked at Template:Rp/doc because I wondered if it would say anything important or useful about adding volume numbers. I notice that (i) it doesn't even start to say why plain numbers are "not recommended", and (ii) its own first titled section ("Function") uses plain numbers for every one of its examples. The disrecommendation was added by Matthiaspaul in September; it's somehow related to "AMA style", but I don't understand why we should care about AMA style (or, if this matters, why the examples provided ignore this); I am of course open to persuasion, and if he thinks it's important, perhaps Matthiaspaul could add a brief explanation to the doc. -- Hoary (talk) 23:09, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

{{rp}} and {{r}} were completely reworked and significantly extended back then. One of the many improvements were added explanatory tooltips (as not everyone seems to have understood the display notation used by the template). Another change was that the various page parameters are now also supported for the default display format, whereas, previously, they were only supported for the alternative AMA format. This helped to improve the usability of the template, as well as the compatibility and consistency with other citation templates.

Now, in order to improve the formatting of the displayed page information and to provide even more specific tooltips, the template needs to know if the given location information is for a single page, a multitude of pages or for other location information. This can be derived from which of the various named parameters for location information is used (|page=, |pages=, or |at=).

The old syntax using the unnamed parameter works as well (and, for backward compatibility, will continue to work into the long-term future), but if it is used, some formatting cannot be applied and the wording of the template's tooltip will have to remain somewhat more vague.

This is why the usage of the unnamed parameter is no longer recommended.

Some multivolume books have continuous pagination (such that if vol 1 ends on page 458, then vol 2 starts on page 459), but they're in a minority. For a multivolume work whose pagination starts afresh in each volume (as it normally does), one has to specify volume number as well as page number. I think the volume info belongs into the base citation (i.e. |volume=2 if you use CS1), so you could use |page=438 with {{rp}}. If, in the same article, you would also cite from the same work's |volume=1, this would normally go into a separate base citation. This would also ensure that the metadata for the two base citation(s) is complete.

Alternatively, you could omit the volume info in the base citation (if you want to combine multi-volume works into one citation). I would then use |at= with {{rp}}, i.e. |at=V1:128 and |at=V2:438. However, there is no established superscript notation for volumes. Also, the metadata of the base citation would then lack the volume info. To avoid that, you could specify something like |volume=1–2 in a CS1/CS2 base citation.

Adding categories to country data templates -- but then the templates don't show up on category page

I've recently gone on a little categorizing quest re: the templates for coat of arms of Swedish provinces ("lanskaper"). See e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Country_data_%C3%85ngermanland and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Country_data_Uppland .

I've created a new category -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Country_data_templates_of_provinces_of_Sweden and added to the doc page for every province's data, as per the documentation. This is 25 pages in total. But the category page lists 0 pages in that category. Notice that on the template pages listed above "Country data templates of provinces of Sweden" appears in the list of categories.

null edit on Template:Country data Uppland to update the link tables for that specific page. That updates the category right away. It's confusing that the category can be displayed on the page before the page is listed in the category but that's how the software works if the category is added via a transcluded page. Deleting redirect?

Heya folks, I was wondering how to delete a redirect for a page. I recently moved a page about the Bayou Pierre of Mississippi and wrote one for the Bayou Pierre of Louisiana. The source for the Mississippi article never states it should be redirecting, but en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayou_Pierre still goes to the Mississippi one instead of going blank. This results in the issue of my article going as an orphan, while innocent readers may believe a river in Mississippi feeds the Red River. How preposterous! By the way, first time in the Teahouse. Teaching about our disorder

The guideline, which I understand, of not being able to write about you/something close to you is mildly frustrating. The reasoning is because we, as a system, want to write articles about our disorder. Does it count as a bias if people have the disorder they are writing about? Because we have DID or OSDD (unsure which) and we want to spread information about these disorders. /genq -Janis

A very experienced editor once said to me that you need three things to edit wikipedia successfully, sources, sources and sources. This was astonishingly good advice, and I commend it to you. I have edited the article regarding my own condition many times, bearing in mind the above advice. On medical topics we go beyond the good sourcing advice given in

WP:MEDRS

(The document that governs MEDically Reliable Sources).

I third that agreement of both David and Roxy. We have tens of thousands of editors with various health conditions, some permanent and others temporary. One should never be forced to disclose a health condition, even if it does adversely affect their editing habits, however, everyone is held to the same standard regardless so whether a disclosure is made or not, if an editor doesn't follow policy then they are subject to the same sanctions as any other editor so it's best to listen to the advice of experienced editors on reliable sourcing and, specifically, from Roxy on reliable Med sources in the case of articles that follow under that topic. --ARose Wolf 19:00, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

I would say, unless you stand to make a profit off such an article if it were written, like as a paid editor, or if you are employed by a company whose business is related to such a topic. Simply having a disorder does not preclude one from being able to edit freely about that subject.
