Current practice seems to follow that when referring to the sovereign state ("country"), island or people, Taiwan is used, whilst when specifically referring to the government, ROC is used. Since we have a Sea of Japan naming dispute article, should a companion article be created for the South China Sea naming dispute ? As it is the "South Sea" (PRC/ROC), "East Sea" (Vietnam), "West Philippine Sea" (Philippines) and "South China Sea" (internationally/HK). Hsu Mo is a Chinese figure in international law, and I created his page from a translation of the German Wikipedia page on him because of his involvement in international law. However, his involvement was usually as a representative of the Republic of China, including on various UN bodies before the PRC ousted the ROC. I'm not a member of this WikiProject, but Hsu Mo clearly falls within it, so I placed this project's banner on the talk page and hope some members will have a chance to review the page. This user likes to remove references to Taiwan and replace them with words that only reference China. They also like to promote stereotypes in the BLPs of Asian-Americans born in America by inserting Chinese names and adding unnecessary and inappropriate references to Chinese ancestry. A recent example is when they added content labeled "ethnicity" in the infoboxes of journalists when it is not standard or notable to put the ethnicity of a journalist in the infobox. They are very persistant and will constantly revert edits that try to undo their harm. Their edits are offensive and promote racism. Please feel free to tell them to stop and report them to AN/I if their behavior continues. Hi everyone. The most recent local elections in Taiwan have been referred to as

I assume that there should be some uniformity regarding the election articles, as Taiwan hasn't changed it's official name recently. Should:

a) there be historic renaming of election articles to "Taiwan...."?
b) only new election articles refer to "Taiwan"?
c) everything go to "ROC" and stay like that?

I wouldn't want to go with c), as clearly there's a preference for "Taiwan" headings at least on the 2014 local election article.

I sort of agree with him though. I'm all in favour of using article names that people recognise and are most common. It is easier to rename the article to confirm with the rest than rename the rest to line up with this one, but I think the best solution is to rename the other articles to use the word "Taiwan" rather than ROC. • Talking about Taiwan/ROC is really a never-ending dispute. Even most (I can say "99%") of the edits is always only about reverting between Taiwan or Republic of China names and vice versa. Seriously, everyone is just interested in doing that name changes, without really having the interest to create new articles regarding other aspects of Taiwan/ROC or improving (making longer) any existing articles about Taiwan/ROC. • I like the idea of relegating the governmental and sovereignty issues into an article called "Republic of China" or "Taiwan (government)" or some such name, and putting everything else in a separate "Taiwan (island)" article. If a "Taiwan (island)" article can withstand the test of time in 84 other languages, it should be able to exist in English, too. This new article, written by a student, may need a copyedit, and a check for neutrality and such, since it's supposed to about a derogatory term for Taiwanese people. It does seem to me that this term is also used in a non-derogatory fashion, too. It should be noted that the article is a translation of zh:台客, an article that has several cleanup tags. "Taike" looks more common to me, but that is based on a somewhat cursory Google search. —Kusma (t·c) 19:46, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

It looks to me that "Lanshuei River" (Tainan) is a local variant (or transliteration mistake) of "Yanshui River" (Tainan) — their stated lengths are the same, and there are only few rivers of this size, none of them has a name that comes closer in pronounciation. Perhaps "鹽" is pronounced "lan" is some local dialect? If so, the former (unreferenced orphan) should be redirected to the latter, but maybe somebody with local knowledge can confirm this? Googling in Chinese, it seems that the former refers to the arena in a complex that also includes a track and field stadium, whereas the latter might also refer to the arena, or the complex as a whole. (Sorry, piecing information together here, so I don't have a source I can point to.) They probably shouldn't be separate articles, and notability appears borderline at best--it seems to generally be mentioned in the context of events being held there. Hello, this article, supposedly a tributary of the Gaoping River, does not provide any sources, and I have trouble matching it with any sizeable tributary of the Gaoping River (or any river in Taiwan). Chinese WP does not list anything resembling this among the tributaries. I am inclined to think there is no such river in Taiwan, but without knowing the real Chinese name it is difficult to be sure. Um, Dr. Blofeld, I think it might be a good idea to go over your geography stubs. This would be the third if it turns out to be unverifiable like the other two before it. I'm concerned we're propagating incorrect information. Have all these been created in a similar fashion or from a single source? What are the official guidelines about categorization of Taiwanese categories: Should the category related to Taiwan (e.g. companies of Taiwan) be included also as a subcategory in the relevant Chines category (e.g. companies of China)? It seems that the practice is inconsistent and relevant Chinese categories have been added to different categories and removed by different editors in different times. The question was triggered by the question if Category:Nuclear power stations in Taiwan should be included also as a subcategory in Category:Nuclear power stations in China or not. An important thing I need to mention is that this template serves a role in the monuments database and is part of the Wiki Loves Monuments system, that is what this template is created for. This means that the identifiers on the file pages match with monuments in the monument database and with the monuments lists on Wikipedia. So if you say that this template is "currently being completely dysfunctional", this is not right and you do not understand the role of this template. The role of this template is not to link to an external database (if such link is possible, it is certainly welcome, but it is not the core goal), but to identify the individual monuments on the photos. So the core goal is identification. Please be aware of that.

PS: The problem of databases that change there system is a known problem. I think it may be better to have all monuments in Wikidata and use the Wikidata Q... identifiers instead, which can retrieve the official monument IDs and URLs more easily without future problems. • Yes, the template at the time you first messaged here was non-functional due to the revamping of the government website. The pages were no longer accessible by the existing ID and replaced by a plain database. Zeke has already contacted the Taiwan (ROC) government and is awaiting their response regarding issuance/usage of monument ID with worries about possible future change again so I think your idea for a listing in wikidata is worth considering. Oppose: I am a Hanyu Pinyin user and would like it if Taiwan used it too but the reality is Taiwan's still very disorganized and uses a mixture of Hanyu Pinyin, Tongyong Pinyin (politically motivated), and Wade-Giles systems. So we should reflect what the Taiwan (ROC) government is using as much as possible. Then there is also the problem of Personal Names. This is a funny one, Ma Ying-jeou himself who advocates usage of Pinyin does not change his name to Ma Yingjiu and there is the advantage that the different spelling easily distinguishes between PRC and ROC citizens. So Taiwan is a mess. I think

Because the ROC is considered a rump state, did the Kuomintang held on to the small parts of the islands of Quemoy and Lienchiang that was once part of the Fujian province as well some parts of the mainland? Not sure what your question is. To answer the first part, yes, Kuomintang have always held on to both

Lienchiang, which were both re-captured from the Japanese during and in the immediate aftermath of the Second Sino-Japanese War. Currently the title format for election articles of Taiwan is not consistent in that some start with "Taiwan" and some "Taiwanese". I think "Taiwanese" is more of an a term for people whereas "Taiwan" should be used for the place. Szqecs (talk) 04:19, 9 August 2017 (UTC)

If I recall Taiwan manages such things differently, as do many countries. Most countries outlaw acts of terrorism, not groups themselves. Most so-called "terror groups" are very loosely affiliated alliances with no real head governing body. Banning groups is very difficult, and impedes grossly on free speech, while banning certain actions as well as the planning and funding of said actions is quite easy and generally accepted as good law enforcement practice. Since most terrorist groups associate with other groups of similar motives, treating them as a network of connections is generally a much more effective plan. The advocation of illegal action by said groups is enough to monitor said groups, and because of the interconnection this makes it easier to monitor them if you don't keep a list of specific groups to target as enemies of the State. The heavy focus on individuals in most international terrorism allows easier target of money launderers who have a less direct connection to said groups but process money coming in and out of them.
