Tony played the classic game that was in vogue. His drives were the strength of his attack and his defense was outstanding. He could hit with immense pace and over-spin, but when prudence and judgement dictated security of stroke rather than speed, as against a player of Williams' daring, Wilding could temper his drives and play faultlessly from the baseline. (Collins, p. 661)

- Comparison style Brookes - American twist service - Physical fitness - Improved backhand

"even Wilding's resolute and unruffled front were not proof against him, although, when he strengthened his smashing and backhand a year or two later, the ugly fence was usually carried." (20 years of tennis, p. 19, A Wallis Meyers)

"reliable ground-stroke players" (Ibid. p161)

"Wilding's best stroke is hi cross-court drive which has a fabulous speed and flatness of trajectory. The backhand stroke is his weakness; if by any means possible, he tries to avoid it. His smashes are, in view of his tallness and muscles, almost childlike, his volley stops, however, are brilliant,...Of the 'reverse twist service' of his countrymen and the Americans he scarcely has an inkling, his experiments with it lookes dangerous, but proved completely harmless. His varied and daring game won him sympathy of many; personally, he proved to be the 'jolly good fellow' which he reputedly is'. (Otto Nirrnheim, translation Gildemeister, p408)

"Mr. Wilding's game, somehow, has always remained incomplete. It has greatly developed in some directions, and his vigour and condition have helped to cover a multitude of sins. But his inferior back-hand and weakness overhead remain as a handicap, while when hard pressed in a close match, he has several times showed that he cannot command that last requisite of a really good player – temperament."(Times, November 1908) http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=AS19081114.2.75.2

"What is the strongest feature of Anthony Wilding's game? The fact is that he is so well balanced as to be without one. He is equally strong at every point. He is undoubtedly just now at his zenith and has a fine physique to aid him." (McLoughlin interview, July 1914) http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=AS19140730.2.26

"He first used the Australian unchanged grip for both forehand and backhand, but later changed to the English backhand." (Lowe's 1935, p. 252)

Remoulding backhand (1903). From conventional New Zealand backhand, striking the ball with te same side of the racket as the forehand. Undercut rather than hit through. Canged to English backhand [3] Trained in winter 1903–04 at Queen's on insistence of Dorothea Douglass.[4]

"Tendency to force the pace" [5]

"Wilding's stamina and fitness" [6]

"Continued inability to deal with the lobbing game." [7]

"His speed about the court, stamina ... won acclaim". "His forehand drive was'sharp' and 'staccato' rather than flowing, his backhand awkward and 'not at all formidable'. (1906/7) [8]

"Comparatively weak backhand" (1906/7) [9]

"Lead up to the 1906 Victorian Championships began a major remodelling of his game." Switch to serve and volley game on advice of wilberforce Eaves. (begin 1907) [9]

"Consistency and accuracy" [10]

"Doubts about Wilding's overhead play continued to be voiced throughout his career, and he was undoubtedly at his most comfortable when his powerful driving and placement enabled him to dictate the pattern of the game."[10]

"Drives and passing shots featured largely in Wilding's play ... The accuracy of Wilding's placements was matched by a low error rate. ... The hallmarks of the New Zealanders game were, as the statisticians saw it, accuracy of placements and strong and deep driving. When coupled with a level of fitness and stamina without equal, these strengths were the mark of a player of true international class."[11]

"Australian critics ranked Wilding a little below the top echelon of the tennis world" [12]

"Tennis had reached new levels in Australasia in 1908 and 1909" [12]

Tilden

In spite of his powerful serve, Tilden preferred to play mostly from the backcourt, where he dazzled opponents with his ever-changing tactics: a mixture of guile, of chopped and

shots, of drop shots and lobs, and of sudden powerful ground strokes deep to the corners. He hit superbly angled shots on nearly impossible returns and liked nothing better than to face an opponent who threw powerful serves and groundstrokes
at him and rushed the net—one way or another Tilden would find a way to hit the ball past him.

Tall, lean, and gangly, with long arms, enormous hands, and exceptionally broad shoulders, Tilden possessed what was called at the time a "cannonball" service. In 1931 his

Ivo Karlovic holds the modern, unassailable record, measured by radar
, of 156 mph (251 km/h)—a record set with a much more powerful racquet.) Although he could serve aces almost at will, he had little interest in advancing to the net behind his serve. He primarily used spin and slice serves, reserving his famous cannonball for crucial moments in the match.

Rosewall

Rosewall had everything except a big serve. Norman Brookes: "Roswall had the best backhand of all time". A quick-moving, instinctive player, Ken had great skill in handling the rising ball, rapid reflexes, the ability to switch direction in mid-stroke. He met the fiercest strokes with nonchalance, could volley smashes impudently from near the baseline.[13]

List of ATP number 1 ranked singles players

The

rankings since 23 August 1973.[1]
An updated rankings list is released at the beginning of each week.

History

Since the introduction of the ATP rankings the method used to calculate a player's ranking points has changed several times. As of 2011, the rankings are calculated by totaling the points a player wins in his best eighteen tournaments, subject to certain restrictions. For top players the counting tournaments are the four

ATP World Tour Finals also include any points gained at that tournament, increasing their counting tournament total to nineteen.[2]

Current ranking method

Since 1973, 25 men have been ranked number 1 by the ATP.

Patrick Rafter spent the fewest weeks at number 1 (one week). Lleyton Hewitt is both the youngest world number 1 (20 years, 268 days) and youngest year-end number 1,[12][13] while Ivan Lendl is the oldest year-end number 1 (29 years, 299 days). Andre Agassi is the oldest number 1 (33 years, 131 days).[14][15][16]

Since 1973 when the ATP ranking started, there have been eleven years when one player held the top spot for the entire year. In contrast, 1999 had the most number 1 players of any year since the rankings started. There were five players who were number 1 sometime during that year - Sampras, Moya, Kafelnikov, Agassi and Rafter.
