At the moment there are five full queues and seven full prep sets. Conversely, there are two empty queues and no empty prep sets. If I were to move the next prep set to the queue, that would make six full queues and free up one prep area which you could fill, but I want to suggest that this is psychologically wrong.

There are a number of admins who traditionally have moved preps to queues, and a few who occasionally have done so. If these people always find the queues well-filled, they may stop promoting preps and move to other realms of admin activity, and DYK will be the poorer for losing their interest. So I personally intend in future to only move a prep set to the queue when there are fewer than four full queues. That way, other admins will always find that there is useful DYK work for them to do.

Then there is the matter of building prep sets. There are several editors who traditionally have sometimes moved hooks into preps or built whole prep sets, but they cannot do so if the prep sets are always full. They see that their help is not needed, and they go away and do other things. Now prep set building really needs more than one person doing it because after a bit, a single person gets stymied in that they have involvement in too many hooks and then cannot promote them.

So I would like to suggest that we stop being so efficient and aim to always leave at least two queues and two prep sets permanently unfilled, so as to encourage other people to participate. There will still be at least a week between a hook being promoted and it appearing on the main page, which is ample for scrutiny purposes. What do you think? Hi, Cwmhiraeth. First of all, I'd like to say that I miss doing prep sets with you. I would fill out a set at night and I always knew you would fill in the next set in the morning. Now that you are an administrator, you seem to be the only one moving preps to queues. I don't think it's a question of other administrators shying away from doing the promotions, because they've always been busy with other (non-DYK) things and had to be pinged and reminded to promote sets. Queues can sit empty for days without anyone but you making the promotions. Leaving three queues open is not going to motivate anyone unless they get a nudge IMO.

I'm actually flabbergasted that you're even suggesting that we leave one or two prep sets "permanently unfilled". This seems to fly in the face of that whole push by valereee and BlueMoonset earlier this year to create 7 prep sets and 7 queues. Personally, I didn't understand what was wrong with 6 prep sets and queues, but now you're proposing 5 prep sets and queues? I thought the whole point was to have 2 full weeks loaded and ready to go.

If you're suggesting that I lay off prep set building for a while, fine. I enjoy article creation. I can do more reviews. But when you finally open up another prep set, who's going to fill it? I do see the psychology Cwmhiraeth is talking about. For me, after the last major discussion on whether we should go to 2-a-days, I decided that since a set a week was what I was happy to do, that's what I was going to stick with instead of doing 2-3 per week when it seemed necessary and feeling resentful. For me, the reason for seven queues and preps was to allow more flexibility: sometimes, more admins would be active, and sometimes more prep builders would be: if you had the seventh's space available, it could be filled. While we seem to have more preps being built, there was at least one point in the past week when all seven queues were filled. I didn't see it as always having two full weeks of sets in the pipeline, though it was possible that we'd have that many. I've been surprised and pleased that we've been maintaining nine or more sets (usually more) lately.

Perhaps more queues might be filled if we had the box at the top of the Queues page say there was a backlog when fewer queues were empty. For a long time the message didn't go up until all but one queue was empty; after the recent change, I made it so that if a majority of queues were empty (four), the notice would go up. But maybe it should be if three queues are empty, the message goes up. Perhaps admins need a visual reminder at an earlier point, which might help us avoid some pings on the talk page.

Part of what's going on is that we're only promoting one queue a day—the queues are emptying up more slowly and we only need to average one new prep a day. We're not yet used to that more relaxed rate. But we'll probably be back to two per day before another two weeks have passed, since we're at 104 approved now, and the switch turns again when we hit 120. I think aiming for two empty queues and two empty preps would be unwise while we're putting 14 sets to the main page every week. BlueMoonset (talk) 21:14, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

As this is the centennial year for US suffrage, I thought it important to document that that did not apply to women in unincorporated territories. Perhaps Williams would be a good candidate for DYK? Something like "...that women in the US Virgin Islands did not gain suffrage until after Edith L. Williams attempted to register to vote in 1935?" I have just listed a photograph of the Augusta Victoria Hospital as POTD for August 5th. The article on the hospital states that it is located on the southern side of the Mount of Olives but the description of the image states that the hospital is on the northern side. Judging by the coordinates, the latter would appear to be correct. At the moment, I copied the sentence in the article into the POTD caption so that the two would agree. The reviewer at Template:Did you know nominations/A Piece of Eden wants me to add the ending resolutions to the plot to the article. I have never included the entire plot in start class articles and no one mentioned such a thing before, in DYK or elsewhere. I'm just seeing if there is an unwritten rule about there needing to be an entire plot section. I could write the ending, but my mind is sketchy on those details so I would need to get a hold of a copy of the title again. I would rather not do that. SL93 (talk) 23:19, 26 July 2020 (UTC)

@SL93: when it comes to film articles, I actually have to hold myself back from writing more than 4 paragraphs! I'm not sure what more needs to be added to the summary, though I think it reads very choppily. The lead is also pretty short; usually we include the stars of the film. I honestly don't see what's wrong with not including the conclusion—see that the TCM review did just that—but reviewers (like myself) may feel that since this is going up on the main page, it should be close to complete. I should have never said those things on my talk page. I admit that sometimes I think that, but sometimes I don't so I really should have just kept that thought to myself. When I posted that comment, the main thing on my mind was how a few Women In Red members stated that I was belittling women subconsiously (that's a first) by where I placed the Marriages section...which was resolved by the section being moved one section lower (What a way to belittle women...). I figured if they, in this case one of them being admin, could say crap like that about me and get away with it, I could potentially not worry so much about what I say. Hi Yoninah, can you please take a look at this nomination Template:Did you know nominations/Mic Drop (song)? I'd originally nominated the article for DYK on July 21. However the character count was just short of a 5x expansion at that time. It was a GA nominee back then, so the reviewer suggested to renominate it once it passes the GA. So I'd asked the reviewer to close the nomination. The article became a GA on August 5 and I want to renominate it now. However, the original nomination still appears on the template talk of current DYK noms. I didn't create this, but I reworked it yesterday because the claim of notability was based on inheritance, rather than her own. It is >5x expanded from where it started at 359 char, if you are interested in it for DYK. No worries if you are too busy or you don't think there is enough there. I just took this one live today. Not sure how one would do a DYK with all the name changes she had, but she is clearly a significant participant in Native American rights, if you want to try a DYK.
