By consensus at Wikipedia:WikiProject Geology, this template should only be used on the articles about geological time periods that it links to. It should not be used in categories, nor for extinct taxa, nor geological formations.
Initial visibility: currently defaults to autocollapse
To set this template's initial visibility, the |state=
parameter may be used:

to show the template collapsed, i.e., hidden apart from its title bar|state=expanded
