Questions about "Speedy deletion".

Thank you for the "speedy" reply to my request for help on this topic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Wordreader#.7B.7BHelp_me.7D.7D_with_.22Speedy_deletion.22

[My error: The article was created in December 2010. It was the "Talk" page that was created in May 2012. I'm sorry for the confusion.]

So, is that stub article a candidate for the "Speedy deletion" action or not? If not, why not? I'm still confused as not all of my questions were addressed. Thanks for the information that you gave me. I never heard about WP gadgets before, for instance. Thank you, Wordreader (talk) 01:16, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

My view is that it's your decision - it's the only way to learn... If you think it's suitable for a speedy then put one in, the admin that will wander by and look will make up his mind, if he declines, he will give a reason in the edit summary which you can then read in the page history (well, I do, anyway!) - and he may make suggestions like "Declined - take to AfD" or similar. FWIW, I think you are probably correct - but I would wager not all admins are the same - we too are human! I don't usually do A7s - I know all admins are supposed to do everything and walk on water, but we do tend to drift into certain areas and become much more confident in those areas. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:48, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Missing Image from Wiki Commons (9/12/12)

Dear Ron Jones,

I was in touch with you several months ago, regarding permission to post images on Wikipedia and your advice was very helpful, so much so that I am taking the liberty of asking you yet another question about this. I was given permission by Wikipedia to use the images and eleven were then posted by me on Wiki Commons (Category: Frederique Petrides) but I now notice that one is missing, which I would like to use. I am the copyright holder of the images which are of my mother, Frederique Petrides, who was an orchestral conductor. however in the letter to the permissions staff, it had been explained that what has become the missing image was now in the public domain. Would that be the reason it has been removed? And if so what can be done about this?

Thanks for your attention. Mx96 09:47, 12 September 2012 (UTC)User:Mx96

A direct translation of copyrighted works is still a copyright problem. Per

WP:COMPLIC, "Unless copyrighted images and text meet non-free content allowance, we can't use them or create "derivative works" of them. That means we can't translate too much from a copyrighted foreign language source to include it here or prominently feature a copyrighted image inside of a picture we take." Bgwhite (talk
) 23:06, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Agreed - but for a speedy, you would need to find an Italian speaking admin to view it - that's unlikely to happen. A google translation of the page doesn't work to give a match (I tried it). Hence why I said in the edit summary - take to AfD - the you might find some bi-lingual editors to comment. Ronhjones (Talk) 23:33, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
OR you could use {{Copyvio}} to blank the page, and allow a proper review. Ronhjones (Talk) 23:35, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
First, it is in Portuguese and not Italian. He is from Brazil and not Italy. Second, Google translate gives a great match. Each paragraph in the article corresponds nicely with each paragraph in the biography. Third, {{Copyvio}} is broken and has been for awhile. I gave up on that when articles languished for months.

Google "Merlino was the first Brazilian stylist to be represented in Paris in 1999. This action succeeded appearances in magazines important as The Face, ID, Tank, View on Colour, Jalouse, Libération, Elle, L'Officiel. Madonna bought a dress from her summer 1999, and Natalie Imbruglia a t-shirt from the same collection.

Original "Together with other designers he founded the Semana da Moda in April 1997 and took part in it until March 1999. Soon after, he decided to launch his collection independently for three consecutive seasons, starting a new modus operandi in Brazil."
Google "Much of his training he attributes to this encounter. together with other designers founded the Fashion Week in April 97, which participated in all editions until March 99. Soon after, for three seasons, chose to show their collections so independent, ushering in Brazil this model parades during Release schedule." Bgwhite (talk) 23:54, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
OK, point taken - Google decided it was Italian...! BTW Copyvio is still working - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Copyright_problems - someones people forget to do all the actions in "Instructions for filing", which breaks it. Unlike CSD/Afd with Twinkle there is no quick fix that does all the page filling for you. Ronhjones (Talk) 00:50, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

I appreciate

the heads-up on the

Zoe Ferraris picture. I had been corresponding with Ms Ferraris and she sent me a couple of pictures to use. I am reluctant to contact her again by sending that rather imposing form that wikipedia likes, so will check in my correspondence with her to see if the language there will satisfy our copyright folks. Einar aka Carptrash (talk
) 14:47, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

Form not my design! If you cannot find enough words to send in, then I could send you a pre-filled in form from OTRS - you could forward it to Zoe Ferraris, and just ask her to state agreement, and send it back to us. Let me know here if you want me to do that. Ronhjones (Talk) 18:43, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Ron, this is more or less what I did. I had a sort of filled out form from OTRS that I forwarded to her and asked her to send it to "them" (Permissions at wikipedia or something) from her web site. Hopefully this will all happen. Carptrash (talk) 19:47, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
It can be sent to any active queue - permissions or info is OK - did you keep the ticket number in the subject line? The OTRS system groups all e-mails by the ticket number, no number means it gets a new one and sits in a queue with no link to the original ticket. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:51, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
If you forgot the ticket number then don't worry, I expect the OTRS person who actions it will see the ticket number on the file page and merge the tickets - it just might take a few days longer. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:59, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

I just got another email from Zoe F and today one from Stephen P. confirming that the rights on the picture (actually two of them) are all in good order. Later, Carptrash (talk) 18:58, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

It appears you now have a valid OTRS ticket for them, which has been applied to the images, thank you. Ronhjones (Talk) 20:47, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi. It is against MOS guidelines to have a cluttered lead with photographs. Ukiw has been warned of this previously and been reverted by the other article editors. If you click the symbols under the "License" label you will see it's CC BY-NC-SA 2.0. It has to be PD, CC-0, CC-BY or CC-BY-SA to be uploaded here. The presence of NC or ND in the license code makes it unacceptable. Ronhjones (Talk) 23:28, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
Oh okay, I thought noncommercial was ok? It's not like wiki is commercial? Maybe I'm just confusing them. TV | talk 23:31, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
WP is not commercial, but all the images here (except non-free ones) may be used by anyone else for any purpose (including commercial), so long as they follow the license terms - i.e BY means they must attribute the owner and SA means they must Share Alike (use exactly the same license as here). Ronhjones (Talk) 23:35, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
Ahh! Thanks for explaining! TV | talk 23:48, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Kairo (film) to Pulse (2001 film)

Hi. Since I want to request moving the page
a move review
.
I understand you didn't move the page because of "no consensus." However, Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English) says "The title of an article should generally use the version of the name of the subject which is most common in the English language, as you would find it in reliable sources" and Wikipedia:Naming conventions (films)#Foreign-language films says "Use the title more commonly recognized by English readers; normally this means the title under which it has been released in cinemas or on video in the English-speaking world."
The official website of the film (http://www.pulsefilm.com/) says the title is Pulse. Many English-language websites, including Allmovie, The A.V. Club, Cinespot, Guardian, Midnight Eye, Rotten Tomatoes, The Seattle Times, Slant Magazine, Village Voice and The Washington Post, use the title Pulse, not Kairo. Kiyoshi Kurosawa, the director of the film, also refers to the film as Pulse in Midnight Eye interview and Reverse Shot interview.
So I guess Pulse is "the name of the subject which is most common in the English language" and "the title more commonly recognized by English readers." Why don't you move the page? 122.29.28.169 (talk) 09:28, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
That move request was 2 years ago... Was it the most common name then? Maybe not. Maybe it is now - feel free to start another move request after so long. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:51, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Also I have noticed that other greek groups similar to ours have been put on as a link on the List of Fraternities and Sororities page, and I was wondering if we can also be linked? It's still a user page (as you requested). It is not an article (yet). You just removed the "userspace draft" banner I added - that makes no difference - it's still a user page. It will not get reviewed (or approved) in user space. You need to add the banner back - add {{userspace draft}} to the top of the article, save it and then you have the "Submit the page" link, which will start the process for reviewing. You cannot link to the page until it has become an article. Ronhjones (Talk) 21:31, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

That is not excessive vandalism - and in any case the two edits are by the same IP. Just revert and warn as normal, and when they vandalise after level 4 then report to

Armenian footballers

I see you nominated a bunch of Armenian footballers for speedy deletion under criterion A7. I've reviewed some of your nominations and declined all so far (and expect to decline the rest). A7 is only applicable to people for whom there is no assertion of notability. All of these articles assert enough notability, so they cannot be deleted under the speedy deletion process. You may nominate them for deletion via

WP:AFD. In the future, please be more discriminating in the way you apply the speedy deletion tag. -- Y not?

Hi, i recently created a page for the band Meat Depressed and it was deleted. I'm not sure why. Apparently because the text came from Myspace? Naturally - it's quite clear - Follow standard English text formatting and capitalization rules, even if the trademark owner considers nonstandard formatting "official". One small flaw in your plan - you cannot rename categories - they are dynamically made from the entries in the articles. Some 600 articles will have to be edited, then we delete the empty category. Fixed Ronhjones (Talk) 22:07, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for looking at this page. I was curious how you would know that it is a backwards copy. Seems a bit odd that a company would go to WP and copy material from there, in order to create its own website. Isn't the other way round more common? Especially when the material is written like an advert. Cheers. Logical Cowboy (talk) 21:10, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

Also, what about all the redlinks, do you think those should stay or go? Cheers. Logical Cowboy (talk) 21:41, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
 1. The third one I've encountered this year, it's slowly getting more and more of a problem. It was complicated. The first issue is the age of the article, if it was created yesterday, it would have gone. Thus we need to look slowly at the various versions - it seems the article had slowly evolved, phrases in the early articles are still present - take one bit as example Unlike traditional photo agencies, INSTITUTE's mandate is to assist and manage its artist's efforts in all areas of creative production. Current projects include documentary films, commercial advertisement (print and video), book publishing, multimedia projects, museum exhibitions, resale of photo essays and editorial assignments - that was added at the start (17:54, 4 July 2010‎) - but the web page (http://www.instituteartist.com/about) must be written post January 2012 - it's possible (but highly unlikely) that every time the web page changed some different editor added the new bit to the Wikipedia article. Sadly, no-one thought to add a date of creation in the web page metadata, and page info comes up with the today's date and time - some php page created on the fly (I see it more and more, a distinct disadvantage over html pages). I then checked http://archive.org/web/web.php for old versions - there are none (it takes at least six months for a web page to get in the archive). Due to other later changes it looks like the 25 October 2012 version is used on the web page, and it's this one I have templated on the talk page.
 2. Redlinks - looks far too many and not nice to see - I'd kill them.
Ronhjones (Talk) 22:06, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
Nice detective work! I suspect that what is really going on is that the two pages have the same author--hence the COI tag. Whether this is copvio is beyond me, but self-plagiarism sure was a problem for Jonah Lehrer. Logical Cowboy (talk) 22:13, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
There may be an element of that, and I suspect the page may need some editing to be more suitable, as you said it's a bit like an advert. Ronhjones (Talk) 22:17, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

MRINetwork and MRI Network

After MRI Network was protected after numerous attempts at creation of a copyvio, an article was created by User:Picturethatgo at MRINetwork. I am unable to view who created the first three articles; can you please check and see if block evasion is a factor? Thanks! VQuakr (talk) 05:23, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

All created by User:Satobob and all were copyvios - user is not blocked (doesn't mean he might not be socking though.) Just to be sure I've salted that article as well. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:46, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

Hey there, Ron. A user at

No. The vandalism at that time was very intense and all different IPs (though I would suspect some re-booting of routers was also going on). Hopefully it can be unprotected and left to its own devices without incident. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:40, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

on those Henry Moore pictures. I am surprised that they are even around any moore. They were left over from my editing many years ago, and while I could argue that my daughters are the focus of the Princeton one, there is no reason for them to be on wikipedia. Yet. The others seem to me to be clear copyright violations since they were taken in the US. But I am in Phoenix, Arizona now where my father is dying, putting together a pseudo wikipedia article on him that might appear on my user page soonish. There might be some interesting copyright issues regarding some pictures of him, so stay tuned. He does not have a computer in his home, so I am doing any WWW stuff on a catch-as-catch-can basis. I always think it's an admin's first role to assist and point users to the various policies, guidelines, help pages, etc., and only intervene when the user tries to sort it out, but has failed due to actions beyond his/her control. Cycling is not quite my thing - the country lanes around here are just wide enough for two cars to pass (both doing 50+ of course) without their mirrors touching... add a bicycle and... I've seen about 6 bicycles this year with a common factor - obvious fear' in their faces. Ronhjones (Talk) 20:29, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Advice needed

Hi Ron, I came across this personal photo: File:Jeffrey Smith swing.jpg in a BLP and I question its authenticity. It was submitted by the creator of an article designed to discredit a consumer activist that Monsanto doesn't like. Is there anyway to challenge this photo? Many thanks! --KeithbobTalk 22:57, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

The is some bad info in that article - I do wander what is correct and what is not. I've removed ref 32 (www.mum.edu/pdf_yearbooks/1978.pdf) - that was attached to He resides in Fairfield, IA with his wife - there's nothing about him at all in the PDF. The first book listed had a wrong ISBN number - it linked to a different book, I've fixed it. As far as I can see - http://whois.domaintools.com/swingsmith.com (swingsmith.com from the dance web site) links to an address at seedofdeception.com which could be OK (same as book name), but why has that address got 73 domains...? I do wonder if Jeffrey Smith (swing) = Jeffrey M. Smith... Maybe post something at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard? Ronhjones (Talk) 01:36, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi Ron, Thanks for your input and help. I've always found you to be cooperative and fair. It seems that the person's email address is associated with 73 domains rather than the SOD web page. Still that's a lot I guess. As I'm going through the sources I'm finding a lot of misuse and I'm documenting it on the talk page. However, I came to your page because I know you are a sort of expert on images and photos. This photo [3] was submitted by the article's creator and is listed as his/her "own work". It looks like a professional photo with strange coloring, either its really old or it looks like it was taken from a magazine or something. I'm trying to assume good faith but after seeing the misuse of sources etc. I'm starting to have doubts. Is there any way to challenge it? Or do we just accept that this editor is a dance fan, was at this event, knows who Jeffrey H. Smith is and took the photo him/herself? Just wondering what the protocol is here? Do you still suggest BLPN? --KeithbobTalk 18:00, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

The image is not a copyvio of the website http://journalistcalle.blogspot.co.uk/2010_12_01_archive.html, the website has copied the picture from wikimedia commons in December 2010, and not the other-way round. The image File:Kumasi highstreet (shopping street) – Panoramic view.jpg is a derivative work of File:Kumasi, Ghana.jpg which was uploaded two (2) years before on 18 March 2008. I'am reloading the image File:Kumasi highstreet (shopping street) – Panoramic view.jpg because it was obviously mistakenly deleted. MarkMysoe (talk) 05:51, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
Had it been marked up as a derivative (as of course it should have done under the license), then it would not have been checked. Looks like Google Image search is good for identical images, but as the image becomes only a portion of the original, then it tends miss some matches. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:32, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi Ron,

Thank you for your comments regarding the copyright requirements for the image of Irina Berezina (Irina Berezina, Khanty-Mansiysk, Nov 2012.jpg). I must admit that copyright consent is an area I must learn much more about.

I have submitted the Declaration of Consent, together with the details of the official representative from the 2012 FIDE World Chess Championship (ie the Copyright Owner) who provided the consent, to permissions-en AT wikimedia.org. I have cc'd the email to the World Chess Championship Organizing Committee for thier verification, if required.

Both the 2012 FIDE World Chess Championship Organizing Committee, and Irina Berezina herself, provided permission by email for the photo image to by used. Perhaps there are further steps I can take in future to prove that such permission has been provided?

Your advice is appreciated, and you are welcome to reply either here, to my Talk page, or by email to [email protected].

Once you contact OTRS at the e-mail address, then they (or even me there) will help you through the process and tell you exactly what is required. And I see an OTRS ticket on the image already. Once you upload an image like these, which do need a release, just make sure that you add {{

It's clear that the author thinks it might not be notable - however Jim1138 does not agree and has asked for AfD instead - I need no reason not to allow that request to proceed. AdamCrownTalent

Hi Ron,

I was hoping you might be able to take a look at a user,

advocacy. I suspect that it is an account created by a talent management company or some such. His edits have mostly been limited to the Max Chilton
, and highlights include:

 • Adding a non-free image
 • Deleting content en masse (some of it wasn't particularly well-written to begin with, but the user seems to have removed anything that appears to criticise Chilton's performances), and
 • Wording that makes the article read like an advertisement, such as "On 18th December 2012, at the age of 21, Chilton was announced as a race driver for Marussia f1 team in the 2013 formula 1 world championship, marking him out as a rising British talent on the circuit."

I'm not not sure what, if anything, can be done about this, but it appears that the account was created purely to edit the Wikipedia articles of certain people and present them in a highly-positive light. At the very least, AdamCrownTalent's edits fail the gudielines set out by

biographies of living persons. Prisonermonkeys (talk
) 21:43, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Just keep and eye open. It's not really vandalism at present, maybe just a new editor feeling his way. He removed a dead link, but I've seen plenty of new editors do that - I've repaired the link and put it in an appropriate place. That image File:Press shot 1212.JPG is on commons as a free image - I cannot find an image match with any of my tools, I have to assume that it is free - I agree the name sounds like it's not free - maybe he's a pro photographer and took it at some press call, but is only going to use it here - that's perfectly allowed - if he uploads it here first then it can never be a copyright violation, no matter whereelse he uses it in future. Ronhjones (Talk) 22:22, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Deletion of File:Omelan_Pleszkewycz.jpg

I don't understand why this is marked for deletion. It's a picture I scanned of my grandfather, a photo among many others of the family I got, after he died. I don't know who took it - an uncle or other family member perhaps - and it will never be known (there is no note indicating who took it). So such images aren't allowed on wikipedia?Pelmeni (talk) 06:24, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

I have no control over what you wrote when you uploaded the image - I can only go on what is presented to me. It says "Source - Given to me by the subject of the picture." and "Permission - Evidence: Will be provided on request.". Thus we need to see the permission or correct the data. You did not state any relationship, so we cannot assume you have inherited the copyright. This photo was taken in the 1950s you said - by who? - the person who took the photo owns the copyright, not the subject of the picture. If it was taken by a family member, and you have inherited from that member, then it's likely you own the copyright (the photo is too young to be copyright free) and we can then alter the image data - if that is the case then let me know and I will alter it for you. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:52, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I have no idea who took the picture in the 1950s. It may have been a relative. It was given to me along with many other old photos. I cannot exclude that iot wasn't taken byu someone else, but there is nothing about any copyright or studio on the back of the picture so I assume it was taken by someone else in the family, or a friend. The person who took the picture is likely no longer around and my grandfather isn't around to say who took it (and if he were, I doubt he would remember - this was from the 50's). It's a random family picture but a nice one of this person.Pelmeni (talk) 01:33, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
The main question is then are you the actual beneficiary of those photographs? Then one can presume you probably have the copyright. Or was someone else the beneficiary (older brother, uncle, etc.) and they just gave you a copy to keep? Ronhjones (Talk) 02:24, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
Grandfather lived with my dad in his last years; after he died I was asked which old photos did I want to have for myself and this is one of the ones I got. This isn't a copy of a photo that somebody else owns.Pelmeni (talk) 03:39, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
My guess is that you probably do own the copyright as a direct descendant. I see you have e-mailed OTRS - that is probably the best solution - it will stop any further tagging of the image. Ronhjones (Talk) 20:51, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

I would appreciate it if you undeleted this article, and sent it to AFD if you are convinced it is problematic. Cheers, John Vandenberg (chat) 03:40, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

I see The Blade of the Northern Lights has undeleted it anyway - fine, but the end of the first paragraph is still a racist slur which is unreferenced. Ronhjones (Talk) 02:27, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
It was referenced in the body of the article. John Vandenberg (chat) 03:27, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
Then why has someone else put "[citation needed]" by that statement? I don't see many reliable sources... Ronhjones (Talk) 20:14, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

British Chess Magazine

Hi Ron,

I am co-editor and photographer for the British Chess Magazine. In fact, also the IT Manager.

I have come to the conclusion that I do not understand how to publish images that I have created.

I keep seeing messages telling me that my own material is not publishable.

Can you give a very simple instruction on what I am doing wrong please?

I have uploaded the October 2012 cover of the magazine: in simple, non-jargon terms what have I done wrong and what do I need to correct?

Best Regards,

Dr. John Upham, British Chess Magazine — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeupham (talkcontribs) 15:41, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

All editing in Wikipedia if effectively anonymous - be it as an IP or logged in user. There is no way within the Wikipedia system that shows who a user is - unless they care to say on their user page (and that could be false). If a user uploads an image, never seen before, and they claim to own the copyright - then we have no reason to disbelieve them. If a user uploads an image that is found elsewhere before uploading to Wikipedia - then how can we tell if it's the uploader's image or he's just copied it off the web page? - we cannot (and far too many people do copy off of web pages...!), so we need more evidence of ownership (see below). That takes care of "normal" photographs. When we move on to book covers / posters / album covers, then we hit more problems as these are now copies of existing 2D images - e.g. a Poster could have parts of various photos (different photographers), original artwork (cartoonists, etc.). The owner of such posters may own the copyright of all the elements or he may just have a license to use those images for his application, with the original photographer still holding the main copyright. That is further complicated by the fact that all free images have, at worse, CC-BY-SA license - this allows derivatives and full commercial use, so for example, a poster on Wikipedia that had a photo of a person could be used to crop out that image (a derivative), and then legally sold (commercial) - and all the original photographer gets is a small mention of who took the picture.
Your options... (see also
WP:DCM
)
 1. Fill and send in the form at commons:Commons:Email_templates/Consent quoting the urls of all your images, to the e-mail address shown on that page - you will get a ticket number applied to each image - you can also (later) ask for the same license ticket to be applied for subsequent images uploaded. OR
 2. If the images of the covers are on the web - then add a CC-BY or CC-BY-SA license box from http://creativecommons.org/choose/ onto that web page to show the image is released under that license.
Either option declares that you own all the copyright(s) of the image - only you can decide if that's true - and that you are allowing commercial re-use.
You could alternatively go for non-free use, with {{
WP:FURG - but I guess you could really only use one per article, and it might get deleted if there is an image of a living person which is not that small. The non free image would also have to be about 300px wide max, and low resolution. Ronhjones (Talk)

LOL. Like it. Let's hope 2013 is better than 2012 in many ways - less rain would be nice, this must be getting on for the wettest year on record for the UK. Ronhjones (Talk) 17:11, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
And in New Mexico it brought us near drought. Too bad that we can't work something out. Carptrash (talk) 20:50, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
Rather a long pipeline, I feel. Good challenge for some engineer! ;-) Maybe better to concentrate on how to make sure the jet stream always goes north of the UK (and takes all the rain away), rather than being stuck over northern France. Ronhjones (Talk) 21:01, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Good idea. blame it on the French. Here in the USA we manage to blame much of our bad weather on Canada. Certainly the cold blast that we just got is their fault. Carptrash (talk) 21:06, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Vandalalism in the Karnataka article

Dear Ron, earlier on 30th October, I had left this message for you: (:Hi Sir, there is once again vandalism first by user

Satyasraya and Veera Ballala II articles. Now I strongly suspect he is logging from a different computer showing a different IP address as 69.112.22.179 and is posing as a different user but is indulging in the same kind of vandalism. He is reverting my edits without any discussion. This is for your information. Kindly treat this as a complaint against both these anonymous users. Also, without discussion Pied hornbill is reverting my contributions to the Karnataka
article despite reasons given and excerpts from reliable sources quoted by me in the talk page of that article. Pls. intervene on that issue also.)

The

Satyasraya and Veera Ballala II articles. Now, the semi-protection has been removed (ostensibly, on the presumption that Pied hornbill and other will not resort to unauthorized reversion of edits, that too without initiating any discussion etc. Now as I myself saw the Karnataka page after more than a month, I noticed that this user has reverted that very portion which I had contributed to the article. Possibly, this and(/or) another user had been reported to the admins, but requests to him even on the talk page of the article for discussions before resorting to reversion of edits have had no impact on him. I have reported the matter to thebestofall007 also. Can you intervene so that order is restored. Many thanks in advance. You can reply to me on my talk pageSrirangam99 (talk
) 10:58, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

Since you are both logged in editors, there no point in adding semi-protection. I can only refer you to Wikipedia:Dispute resolution, if he chooses not to discuss then those who help there can make their own conclusions. Ronhjones (Talk) 20:54, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi Ron, I left several messages on Pied Hornbill's talk page asking him to discuss. I have no problems if you refer both of us to Wikipedia dispute resolution. Srirangam99 (talk) 11:05, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
Since there is just the two of you - I suggest you request an independent third opinion at Wikipedia:Third_opinion - you should get help with someone who is completely unbiased, and will make a rational decision based on the arguments. Ronhjones (Talk) 14:23, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
Sir, greetings and wish you a Merry Christmas. Today we in India also celebrated an important but a bit less known festival of Vaikuntha Ekadashi - in which worship of the Hindu God Vishnu is performed. Anyways, that's it about the festivities.
Now another user with just an IP address i.e. ‎
Satyasraya articles. Earlier also, there was another vandal using two IP addresses who was vandalizing articles in which I have contributed. I do not want to request for semi-protection as I am not afraid of them, but such elements are disturbing the direction which articles have to take with contribution from various wikipedians, including newbies like me. I for one, do not claim I am perfect, but I am always very open to discussions about veracity of information, reliable sources quoted by us etc. These guys simply revert without giving us notice for discussions, that is the problem. You may reply on my talk page. Many thanks in advance.Srirangam99 (talk
) 16:24, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
Same old articles, yet another IP hopping vandal. Semi-protected again, let them discuss on the talk page as they are unable to provide any real rationale otherwise. Ronhjones (Talk) 17:16, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
Many thanks for your help. I noticed just now, the same IP/user has also vandalized the Western Chalukya Empire article. I usually do not recommend this action, but considering his/its resorting to unauthorized reversions and more importantly, not discussing edits or content, I think in order to preserve sanctity of the articles and letting meaningful edits remain, this user deserves to be blocked. Of course Ron, you can decide what is best.Srirangam99 (talk) 17:43, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
The IP is not so active there, we'll leave that for now. He may be more active when he can't get at the other articles - let's wait and see. Ronhjones (Talk) 22:31, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your response. It seems this I.P.'s basic interest lies in my edits to articles related to the State of Karnataka in India, and of articles related to kingdoms and dynasties/kings from that area. All he does is simply reverts my edits (with just a silly comment - reverted vandal) This he did around 3-4 times in the Vikramaditya VI article, where I have just restored the page to the status where it was before his unauthorized reverts.Srirangam99 (talk) 04:18, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
I've blocked that IP - be warned, he may well switch addresses. Ronhjones (Talk) 20:54, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
Yeah I know the ways of these vandals. But I guess there nothing more we can do except make sincere efforts to protect sanctity of articles which are nothing but results of the sincere efforts of scores of contributors. Nothing's perfect, I suppose. Just for info, his earlier I.P. proxy probably was 69.112.23.166,logging from where he caused commotion in the same article and using the same comment 'reverted vandal'.Srirangam99 (talk) 13:58, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Hello.

I refer to the photograph that I have uploaded above. I have noticed that you have added the {{

watermark}} tag onto the file description page. I would like to inform you that my camera (which I used to take this photograph) does not add watermarks to photographs, nor do I have any clue on how to add them. If you are referring to the date and time on the lower right corner which is easily seen, it's because my camera automatically prints out the date and time according to it's settings, but I don't think it qualifies as a watermark nor as credits. Can you please clarify? Thanks. Pizza1016 (talk | contribs | uploads | logs
) 03:43, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

We would still call it a watermark - it not part of the image, it's been added to the image - in this case by the camera - don't worry someone will take it out (eventually!) Ronhjones (Talk) 20:35, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
OK then. Pizza1016 (talk | contribs | uploads | logs) 00:12, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

I uaed the table as you edited it. There is still a structural error.1archie99 (talk) 06:47, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

Fixed it. I think the problem comes from you using long hyphens in the table, and I think the wiki syntax needs standard hyphens, hence when I added the bar and short hyphen it made the new line. Sometimes better to use – and — when you don't want a standard short hyphen. Ronhjones (Talk) 20:48, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

user request

I removed the prod from Jack Moule because since notability as a national champion is pretty clear, this would require consensus at AfD. I could send it there, but since I would oppose deletion, my nominating it might cause confusion. If you think it should be deleted, it would be better for you to be the one to nominate it. DGG ( talk ) 02:26, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Not up to me - I'll have to talk to the subject as OTRS - he wants it deleted. Ronhjones (Talk) 18:46, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Quality Rating

The talk page does have a quality rating. It is class=B. I've put it on the page myself, removed it, put it back, confirmed it each time, yet the article will not de-categorize. On getting your message, I checked the history - none of my edits are there. This is very weird; I checked and rechecked several times! Anyway I did it once again, and now it has worked. Thank you.

But the first edit was a redirect, and the next was a move. The history doesn't identify it as a page creation. Am I missing something? Isn't there a "former" page?

I'm looking for an opinion

I've been corresponding with an artist and had this exchange:

"I wrote: "Thirdly, it is my understanding that as the creating artist you own the copyrights to images of the monument. I have taken a series of pictures during my visits to Glendale and would like to use those. I am very comfortable showing these to you as part of the getting permission process."
The artist, Joe Tyler replied: "As far as pictures go, I feel that the memorial belongs to all who see it and I have no problem with you sharing the images."

Is this enough permission to use my pictures of his work? I have started the article

here and wanted to add a picture, but decided to run it past you first. Einar aka Carptrash (talk
) 01:59, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

It's a good start (I do wish the US would have a FoP like my country...), why not forward it to me at OTRS - make sure the e-mail adresses are included. Maybe we can firm up the permission that way. The main problem we have, is that I see a lot of these and when I tell the creator that the Wikipedia image can be used for any purpose, including commercial - they get cold feet. Send to info-en AT wikimedia DOT org (tidy that up... stops the spammers) and put my name at top. Let me know here and I will go and look for it. Ronhjones (Talk) 20:03, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
Got it. It's mine Ronhjones (Talk) 21:27, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
That should take it to the next stage. Perhaps I should have mentioned before that I would like this release to function for a bunch of pictures. The memorial in question is a complicated one with a lot of parts to it. Carptrash (talk) 21:40, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
See how he goes with the first one, you can then just ask to agree to the rest in the same way. Ronhjones (Talk) 22:16, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
Sounds good. Carptrash (talk) 22:31, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

username-change request: MCT Susan --> SusanYoo -->MediaMaven

Hi there,

I believe my Username (MCT Susan) has not been changed, as per your approval of my name-change request.

I think the easiest way to see what I mean is to visit MCT Susan's talk page?

You'd advised me to post on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:CHU.

I believe this page ultimately sends me to post to this User rename log: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Log/renameuser.

I only understood today that this might be where I need to post your approval.

As far as I can tell, the MCT Susan username has not yet been changed to SusanYoo.

One complication -- I would like to use a pseudonym now, instead of my real name. I came across a warning while researching this process, that using your real name can result in harassment.

Therefore, I'd like to change my username to MediaMaven.

I've posted an Unblock-un request to that effect on my User talk page (for MCT Susan).

Can you please let me know if there's anything else I need to do? And if not, when I can start operating with my new Username?

Thank you very much for any (more) assistance you can provide. You've already been very helpful. I will now research COI guidelines, to see if I can get an unbiased article on MCT, with good sources, posted somehow. I know a lot of people have looked up this news agency online, and because it is used by close to 600 newspapers in the U.S. and abroad, I think it would be helpful to the public if Wikipedia includes the article.

Happy New Year!

Best, Susan Yoo (aka, I hope!, MediaMaven)

p.s. can you please reply on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:MCT_Susan? I'm worried that if you reply here, I won't receive an e-mail, and I won't know you've replied.

More false info posted on our wiki user page georockgal

User:Georockgal/Delta Psi Delta (Canada) Hi there, you recently responded to an email I had sent concerning false information being posted on out user page georockgal delta psi delta. This was your response: -it's easy to add standard warnings and revert vandals at the same time) or just let me know here or at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Ronhjones

While I am learning how to add standard warning I was hoping you could address the issue of more incorrect edits. Under our history this was stated: Delta Psi Delta, is a Canadian National Sorority that has three active chapters that regularly participate in hazing and one inactive chapter. This information is inaccurate and posted by IP address 99.226.185.230. Same looks like who added incorrect info before.

Here is some more inaccurate info: Delta Psi Delta (nicknamed DpsiD) was founded on September 15, 1991 in

Ryerson University, and Delta Chapter which is based in London, Ontario with members from University of Western Ontario
. The sorority just had it's 20 year Anniversary Celebration in September 2011, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, where many of its existing members and alumna attended and participated in secret rituals.
This is what is should read: Delta Psi Delta (nicknamed DpsiD) was founded on September 15, 1991 in
Ottawa, Ontario
in a classroom within Residence commons at Carleton University. Twelve (12) women
founded this organization, along with the express support of Sigma Pi Fraternity at Carleton University.
Delta Psi Delta, is a Canadian National Sorority that has three active chapters and one inactive.
Alpha chapter is based in

and
Toronto, Ontario
with members from
Ryerson University, and Delta Chapter which is based in London, Ontario

with members from
University of Western Ontario. The sorority just had it's 20 year Anniversary
Celebration in September 2011, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Anyway, we are upset with these revisions, we a hoping that they will stop, ultimately I feel the user posting these edits are trying to get the page removed. We will do that of necessary. There may also be other info that is not accurate, still trying to sort all of this out. I have reverted the information back to its original form. Please respond to my talk page. Thanks! I see that some of the vandalism has been removed. I've rolled it back to an earlier version to complete it - the easiest way is always to undo the edits or restore an older version, rather than trying to remove bit by bit. Ronhjones (Talk) 16:46, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
