Hello again. As we have previously collaborated on article nominations, I would like to ask if you are able to leave any comments here at my FA nomination for High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Any small amount of comments would be appreciated, but I completely understand if you are too busy or uninterested. Thanks in advance. SatDis (talk) 06:34, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

SatDis, I'll try to take a look but I can't make any guarantees. If the FAC runs into risk of being closed just let me know again and I'll try my best to get some comments in. JOEBRO64 14:13, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Promotion of Donkey Kong Land

Congratulations, TheJoebro64! The article you nominated, Donkey Kong Land, has been promoted to featured status, recognizing it as one of the best articles on Wikipedia. The nomination discussion has been archived.

Congratulations, and thank you today for the recent Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, introduced: "What do you get when you throw a niche-but-beloved late '90s franchise, cars, Legos, and infuriated fanboys into a blender? You get Rare's misguided masterpiece, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. This honest-to-God attempt to innovate in a genre that'd stagnated outside of Mario ultimately did more to kill the series it was attempting to resurrect than it did to, well, resurrect it, but it's seen a bit of a renaissance in recent years thanks to its inclusion in Rare Replay. Nowadays, you're more likely to hear about how it was unfairly maligned and innovative, offering a massive amount of constructive freedom a full three years before Minecraft's proper release."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:58, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Banjo and Kazooie

Hello, TheJoebro64, and thank you for being an editor of Wikipedia! I am writing to you (as you suggested, I saw) about your revert of my explaining who Banjo and Kazooie are in the intro of today's FA. Not everyone knows, of course. While the article includes a link, in my experience not everyone cares enough to follow a link, that may lead to another link, etc. Instead, a one-or two-word explanation, the first time the term comes up, is helpful. The names do not make it clear (to the uninitiated) that they are characters, and to someone not familiar with the "franchise", there's a "hunh?" factor; that's why I explained. While saying that they are characters may be a little heavy-handed, some explanation seems called for. What about their being a bear-and-bird duo? It's a bit more specific, and less obvious. Piledhigheranddeeper (talk) 19:23, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's unnecessary to call them "the characters". Maybe there's a better way to introduce them, but I think contextually readers will almost instantly deduce that they are characters. JOEBRO64 14:48, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Death in the Family & Jason's name

Hey, I was looking at the article for the "A Death in the Family" story arc. Firstly, I have to say, great work on it. You put a lot of effort into it and I'm glad it became a FA. What I wanted to ask, is how come Jason and other characters like Dick are referred to by their surnames rather than first names? I understand that this is common practise on Wikipedia with real-life figures (unless said figures are known by mononyms; like Adele). But with fictional characters - especially superheroes - they're usually referred to either by their codenames or first names, as indicated here. Shouldn't that be the case with Jason and Dick in this article? PanagiotisZois (talk) 16:22, 25 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@PanagiotisZois: I actually wasn't aware of those naming conventions. I'm not sure why I chose surnames over first names so I won't lift a finger if you change them. (I could get around to it myself but I'm preoccupied at the moment.) JOEBRO64 20:20, 25 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on

Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Nintedo Power & Super Mario All-Stars

Hi, why are you adding an amalgamation of the ratings of Super Mario All-Stars to the article from Nintendo Power? The magazine did not give an over-all ranking like that, and combining their numeric rating into one overall one is against the rules of

WP:STICKTOSOURCE. I've removed it once and you reverted it without explaining why it was acceptable. Could you add to the discussion on the articles talk page before adding it again? Thanks! Andrzejbanas (talk) 05:03, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply
]

WP:NOR outright states still constitutes "a meaningful reflection of the sources". JOEBRO64 15:00, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply
]
It's not a meaningful reflection of the source of you state an average that is not implied by the authors.
WP:STICKTOSOURCE means when you should not go over what is implied. Any reader taking a glance at the article without investigating the citation would assume that's what the rating the magazine gave, which if course it's not. Could you show me where this consensus came from in the video game wikiproject? Andrzejbanas (talk) 15:44, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply
]
The relevant discussions I found were
WT:VG since the two discussions I found didn't have a ton of input though JOEBRO64 16:16, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply
]
Thanks for sharing these with me! I might bring them back up on the talk page as the previous discussions per what I said above and per
WP:STICKTOSOURCE as I feel like that potential rule was overlooked when the earlier discussions were brought up. Andrzejbanas (talk) 01:04, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply
]
Hey Joe. I was just curious if you were still going to contribute to the discussion on averaging out scores as I posted on the Video Games WikiProject here. Andrzejbanas (talk) 13:07, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I started writing a reply but I've been a bit busy this week so I haven't gotten around to finishing and posting it. Should do it later today (the tl;dr would be that I think adding up the scores for publications who had multiple reviewers giving scores is fine but I've been convinced doing so for reviews that rated different aspects should be discouraged) JOEBRO64 14:11, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No rush, I just didn't want you to miss out on the discussion in case you had. Have a great weekend! Andrzejbanas (talk) 15:03, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sonic CD remake?

How is 2011 Sonic CD a remake? Everyone says it’s remaster because it is estentially the same plot and gameplay just with better graphics a remake complete overhauls the gameplay which this doesn’t. NakhlaMan (talk) 00:10, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

City Escape

In the future, I would recommend that you mind your tone. Wikipedia is a collaborative process, and replying to an article by undoing its creation with merely "no" is, by design, disrespectful.

The article has multiple reliable sources that discuss it in significant detail, including multiple articles specifically about City Escape, and multiple articles that specifically discuss how City Escape is the highlight of Sonic Adventure 2. It also has multiple instances where its creation and inspirations were discussed. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 14:10, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize for coming across as disrespectful, but I just don't see it. The article is primarily sources to listicles (
WP:ROSENBERG) and very few talk suggest the stage itself is a distinct topic from Sonic Adventure 2. I'm starting a merge discussion. JOEBRO64 14:19, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply

Just letting you know that articles about Nintendo EPD games should be specified as "published by Nintendo", as Nintendo EPD is a division of Nintendo, not a separate company from its parent company; keep that in mind for any Nintendo-published games. STB (talk) 00:15, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Spiral, there is absolutely no issue with the way it's set up now. You don't need to tell the reader that a Nintendo game for a Nintendo system was published by Nintendo; it's already obvious, not to mention that the infobox is right there. JOEBRO64 00:46, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Casual readers would not recognize "Nintendo EPD", as it is just a business division of the company that is only named in-house and is publically known as "Nintendo". Please don't reject all changes that do not specifically harm the article's importance. STB (talk) 00:52, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. New pages patrol newsletter

Hello TheJoebro64,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the

NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here
- it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet

WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more
, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

About Sonic Frontiers

"Frontiers is not an open world game, It is a level based platformer adjacent to collectathon platformers of old. This is not a RockStar, UbiSoft, "Zelda Tears of the Wild" kind of game. This is a game taking 3D Mario design and making it its own"

This is what I said when editing the article. You responded as with what the sources say and therefor it is true. It is not. Sources are only using generic retoric and lingo as opposed to speaking what the game is on it's own terms. Even the developers have seperated open world from open zone for this very reason because of the collectathon nature of Frontiers, which I would argue is a greater implication as to what sonic frontiers actually is than the journalist who keeps generalizing. So i would kindly like it if you would revert the article. Samalik16 (talk) 17:02, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

So, your undo my edition, then I ask you why is this okay and can be on Wikipedia [1], but Dreamcast release in India, isn't okay ? I can understand that release dates for non-English countries like Russia or Brazil aren't necessary, but India's second langauge is English, so it would be great to have those dates here. Sonic Robo Blast 2

Hello! This morning I started writing an article on Sonic Robo Blast 2 in my userspace. Since the current article title goes to a redirect, I checked the history and found it had some (long, meandering, and unsourced) previous revisions that you had reverted. I believe that there is coverage from a few respectable places to justify turning it into an article again, most of which are included in the article right now, though a couple of them aren't as in depth as I would prefer. Would appreciate your thoughts as you have experience in the area. Reconrabbit 15:52, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on

Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. Just out of curiosity...

Which actor portrayed Batman the best? In your opinion. I ask because I've been on a Batman movie spree lately. Panini! 🥪 04:12, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Panini!, funny you ask, because I've also been on a Batman kick as of late. My favorite live-action Batman is probably Robert Pattinson, though I also really like Adam West and Christian Bale. In animation, Kevin Conroy, no contest. JOEBRO64 11:05, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Robert Pattinson did really well as Batman, but when it came to anything that wasn't intimidating people/fighting I feel he did a lackluster job, especially with Bruce Wayne. That, or we just have yet to see more of it.
That's why I prefer Christian Bale, because he's the most rounded in all aspects of the character in my opinion. Panini! 🥪 15:38, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2.

Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Your Note on The Dark Knight

I just want to say, THANK YOU for proving my point on "The Batman" being redundant on the article for that movie. There was some guy who added "the" in excess and I edited it way back in late November into early December because it was driving me nuts and this guy wasn't getting my point on it being completely unnecessary.

So I removed all but like two uses of "the" as a compromise and I'm glad that you backed up my point further. I jumped through the hoops of making an account and editing articles just to correct that mistake, so it's nice that there's someone coming in to further prove my point. It didn't need to be there, and I only had two uses as a form of compromise to avoid that little editing war from escalating further. You're awesome.

Sincerely,

Mr. Redfield Mr Redfield (talk) 23:50, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello TheJoebro64,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

TFA

Thank you today for Katana Zero, introduced (in 2022): "One of my favorite video games of the last few years has been this 2019 indie platformer, which blends the tone and themes of neo-noir cinema with fast-paced, insanely difficult side-scrolling gameplay and a killer synthwave soundtrack. Katana Zero was an intense labor of love for its creator Justin Stander, who developed the game almost entirely by himself over the course of six years. It was delayed repeatedly and switched publishers at one point, but was finally released in April 2019 to strong sales and rave reviews."! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:25, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
