After all that has happened, maybe we shall continue doing the case-by-case method. We gave our proposals our best shots, but they got shot down. By the way, I didn't want to notify you about the RM particularly because I'm an involved party of the ongoing ArbCom case (actually, I'm not the main subject of the case) and I shall tone down my notifications to the very minimal. Also, I had very patience and hopes that you would be there. My block issue on Commons
Massage of PetarM,
Hi Daniel Case, my account on Commons is blocked by user INeverCry, also - importnant - my all texting is blocked neither i can see emails. And i need to step in contact with other Admin to check this case of "power abuse" which happaned here. Some edits were erased by same Admin, of Ikan Kekek and King of Hearts, which i dont know what were. I would be glad if you could send this to any other admin on Commons (99of9 or (Admins list) ) to solve this issue, also i saw King of Hearts has Admin rights there.
I would also like if you could send all text to user Ikan Kekek and King of Hearts to ask what were their edits which were erased on that page.
(When copying text do from talk page so URLs wont be lost, if you cant do that let me know).
People can write me on my email [email protected] since i cant write on Commons.
regards, PetarM

Some of those have been uncited for months if not years. After not finding good sources (apart from murder porn-type sites), I gave up and stared removing them. I appreciate you adding some sources back in there, but you could agree that the article is a hot mess. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 22:58, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

I myself have edited far later than I should have (I was recently blocked for interacting with a particularly stubborn little fellow while I was editing too late and toor tired to have simply laughed at them and filed an RfC). Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins
Hello,
Please note that
New deal for page patrollers
Hi Daniel Case/Archive 22 10/4/2016-6/26,
In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.
Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.
Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:28, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
A new user right for New Page Patrollers
Hi Daniel Case/Archive 22 10/4/2016-6/26.
A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.
It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available
If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at

On Saturday December 3, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fifth Wikipedia edit-a-thon—or, #guggathon—to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from Greater China. The event will cap off Wikipedia Asian Month , an online campaign dedicated to augmenting Asian content on Wikipedia throughout November.
New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will include a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia, and Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support. Editors are invited to view the exhibition Tales of Our Time following the event. The Guggenheim aims to raise awareness of the artists featured in the Tales of Our Time exhibition supported by The Robert H. N. Disappearance of Joan Risch
Hi, I wouldn't say that the information that I moved was the summary of the whole article, just bits of information in the wrong places. I had to reformat the article, as it was poorly formatted. I have now split up the information and moved it to different parts of the article where it should be under Blood type and Possible later sightings. There is no need to remove material again, as the article was scrambled up and not formatted right to begin with. Also the information that I moved around gives different details then what is already listed.

A discussion at biographies of living persons noticeboard
Hello, this is to let you know that I have mentioned your edits at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard. MPS1992 (talk) 00:27, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- And you might want to undo your revert at he Metalwa article, and continue discussion. You've now been reverted by two different editors, using the SeeAlso MOS in the mistaken belief that it trumps BLP. Flip the script: if one editor was reverted by other editors pointing out legitimate problems, what would you advise them? Hint: its what you advised me, Daniel. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 06:21, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- The general rule is that you don't keep reverting back and forth while you're discussing ... it generally tends to show WT:MOSLAYOUT. Consensus did not go with you there. You could have, as you said you would, bade your time and built support for a change in policy. Perhaps one is needed ... I don't know. But I do know you're doing this against the result of a community discussion that touched on this very issue. Even if policy is ultimately changed to reflect your concerns, that still looks bad. Daniel Case (talk) 06:35, 18 December 2016 (UTC)]

- Look man, I respect and like you, but you are handling this in the wrong way. You have two editors challenging your interpretation of the See Also MOS guideline, specifically where it applies to BLPa. No one is challenging SEEALSO in its current form; we are saying that the common sense and good judgment means it shouldn't be applied to BLPs.
- That's why I haven't discussed he MOS discussion more, because it isn't on point for this problem. The current form of the guideline suggests common sense and good judgment guide the content within a See Also section. Not to belabor a point, but your intransigence to avoiding potentially damaging comparisons in BLP articles using a See also section isn't demonstrating good judgment, and common sense (and basic decency) doesn't take one family's tragedy and dilute it by a superficial comparison to someone else's tragedy. The mere comparison implies a connection that isn't there, and further punishes the parents of the missing child, which is pretty offensive
- To refresh your memory, the main resistance to my proposed edit to SEEALSO was that:
- a) it was a solution in search of a problem,
- b) that it would create a massive amount of work to fix all of tharticles affected by a necessity of sourcing connections, and
- c) that most editors should be trusted to use their common sense and good judgment to know when to apply the comparisons in See also sections.
- To refresh your memory, the main resistance to my proposed edit to SEEALSO was that:
- . This recent matter illustrates that there is n fact a problem with how See Also is being applied, and that even an editor of your experience can sometimes suffer a lapse in approach to the application of See also section. And, to my mind, that's all this is - a lapse in how negatively such a comparison can be perceived. You say you don't see it, but if even one person does, isn't that one too many people? - Jack Sebastian (talk) 07:14, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- You had the chance to convince the people who could have most changed the section. They declined to do so. Your insistence that since you saw it as a connection it violated BLP (I added two words to make that less likely) rather reminds of how the Supreme Court had to rule that, in cases where speech acts might lead to disorderly conduct charges, the police officer making the charge could not be the one who claimed to have been annoyed or alarmed by the speech in question. Daniel Case (talk) 07:19, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

You say you don't see it, but if even one person does, isn't that one too many people? - Jack Sebastian (talk) 07:14, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- It's true, Daniel, that I couldn't convince people of the need for a rewording of SEEALSO. It is also true that I do not know American caselaw any more than I know Latin. You proposed solution was a unilateral half-measure, and didn't address the problem, which - coupled with your own statement about how edits should cease until discussion does - made a revert necessary.
- The very comparison is the damage to the real life people who live the life depicted in these articles. Surely, you must see that. And even if you do not, if two very different editors can see it, then that's two readers too many. Since we both know that there aren't going to be any references that compare these two disappearances, I'd suggest - as someone once suggested to me - to let the matter go. See Also sections are always going to be second-guessed as to content, but there's a huge difference between comparing phasers and blasters in a fictional setting with comparing real-life tragedies whose lives could very easily be impacted by what we write. We need to be aware of internet's effect on people, and as we are often seen as authoritative, we need to be exceptionally careful with BLPs, not just from a legal standpoint, but from a moral one, as well. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 07:45, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- Did that incident occur because of a Wikipedia article? Daniel Case (talk) 07:46, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- Is that a loaded question? Of course, it came about because of several Wikipedia articles, not just BLPs, but articles where abuses occur in See also sections. Again, the current discussion is not about the validity of See Also sections en toto, but only for their very specific application on BLP articles. Stop looking for zebras. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 08:29, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- Did that incident occur because of a Wikipedia article? Daniel Case (talk) 07:46, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

- You ARE aware that the 3RR is NOT an entitlement, correct, that it's a bright line for sanctioning edit-warriors? Please take more care in actually understanding the policies and alphabet soup you like to cut-and-paste. I mean, as an administrator, you're actually expected to understand the policies you're quoting. It's really not all that difficult. --Calton | Talk 13:54, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
- I'm sorry you feel the way you do about this situation.. Right. I notice that you're not actually sorry for creating the situation. So please spare me the unctuous non-apology apology. --Calton | Talk 13:56, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
- No, I did not take 3RR as an entitlement to revert 3 times within 24 hours and then stop, primarily because I did not revert three times within a 24-hour period. I made two reverts on 14 December, and two more on 18 December... Huh, you make a claim in one sentence ("No, I did not take 3RR as an entitlement to revert") and immediately contradict it with the next. You edit-warred, and you consciously everted four times in a way to avoid 3RR, so yeah, you took 3 reverts as an entitlement.
- I know you may have reasons for questioning the sincerity of my apology... It would be hard to question the sincerity of something that never happened, since there was no actual apology. Of course, you're not required to make an apology, but don't pretend you've done so.
- In that vein, I guess I should also apologize: I'm sorry that you don't understand reliable sourcesfor claims -- in this, the (obviously) implied connection between the two unconnected cases. I'm sorry that an admin has trouble with those policies and guidelines an admin is supposed to know. Do you wish to question the sincerity of my apologies? Because I'm certainly being sincere here.
- In that vein, I guess I should also apologize: I'm sorry that you don't understand
- I do recall that at one time you were a very helpful editor... And I do recall that at one time you showed evidence of knowing what you were doing. Just a note, but trying to be clever in your personal attacks (WERE a helpful editor?) doesn't not make them irrelevant personal attacks.
- Here's a tip: instead of deflection, irrelevancies, point-scoring, condescension, empty rules-lawyering, and treating Wikipedia like a personal battleground, perhaps you should focus on following the standard Wikipedia policies, rules, guidelines, and practices. You know, behave like an admin. --Calton | Talk 02:08, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

The fact was ... that British and Chinese officials in Beijing cooperated in trying to solve the murder of Pamela Werner, which happened 80 years ago today? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Murder of Pamela Werner. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Murder of Pamela Werner), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hi Daniel Case, thank you for supporting my project to reduce the environmental impact of Wikipedia! Can I ask you how you found the project page? Also, happy Wikipedia Day! Thanks, --Gnom (talk) 10:34, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
- Oh, and now I just saw your proposal for a lightning talk at today's Wikipedia Day meetup in NYC. Do you think it would be possible for you to mention my project in this talk? --Gnom (talk) 11:40, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you for planning to mention my project in your lightning talk – I saw that some WMF people will attend the meetup so this is a great chance to raise the topic with them. If I can help you in any way, e.g. by preparing a couple of slides or hopping on a quick Skype call with you, just let me know. Greetings from Hamburg, Germany, --Gnom (talk) 12:29, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi! I had occasion to warn 98.100.198.100, and I noticed the banner on their talk page. The link goes to the article about the bird, not to any user. DYK Nomination/Biography
Hey Daniel! Thanks for the message and for starting the talk page. I'd been following the election rather closely and realized there probably wasn't a page for her yet so I wrote a bit while I had some time :P I think it'd be great to make the article a DYK nominee. I'm relatively new to all of this so if you have any thoughts/criticisms/suggestions, please feel free to let me know. I'll continue working on the bio (as you pointed out) and the page as a whole tomorrow. Socrates Burrito (talk) 09:10, 26 February 2017 (UTC)
I had been thinking something similar as I began working this morning. There was almost too much information at hand regarding the election itself that I felt as if I needed to leave some out or else let it overwhelm her personal article. What you suggested sounds great given I've added info to the election section already, left some out that I know I can go back to and still have more to find and include. So ya, I'll do it. Request for help
Please, I need help for a translation (from Russian), not from an article, but from a source.
I was working in the articles
The phrase "There is a significant discrepancy between the pantheons of the Lowlands Mari, who worship roughly 140 gods, and Highlands Mari, who worship about 70 gods" has as source the book Religious Rites of the Cheremis. Because given an entire book as a reference, even more in a language and script that probably most readers don't understand, I was looking for a page and quote (my idea was to put a quote in the original and translated); I suspect that the reference is the first phrase of the last paragraph of the page 5 (note that the page 5 of the book is the 7th page in the website with the book), that seems to be ""Боговъ у луговыхъ черемисъ считается (съ матерями, пїамбарами , виднезями, праздничными и поминальными божествами) приблизительно около 140, у горныхъ 70"".
What I wanted were:
a) confirmation that the letters that are in the phrase are exactly that
b) a translation (to English) of the passage
Some difficulties:
- It is a document in Adobe Flash (than you can't do copy-paste, you have to look letter-to-letter in a copy of an old document and know how to identify the cyrilic letters)
- It is a document of 1887, before the ortographic reform of 1918, than I can't even use a machine translator. The result of the machine translation of that page is "Bogov in lugovyh cheremis considered (Sh mothers pїambarami, vidnezyami, festive and memorial deities) of about 140, at 70 gornyh"; however, if I exclude the "ъ" at the end of the words (I think that was the rule after 1918), and mechanically translated Богов у луговых черемиъ считается (с матерями, пїамбарами , виднезями, праздничными и поминальными божествами) приблизительно около 140, у горных 70, the result is "Gods in the meadow cheremi considered (with mothers pїambarami, vidnezyami, festive and memorial deities) of about 140, the mountain 70" (sounds better).
- I don't know almost nothing about russian languade or cyrilic script (because that, I tried the machine translation).
If you could help me, I appreciate a reply in my page in the portuguese Wikipedia.
Thanks in advice (and hoping that you could understand my not-much-good English)--MiguelMadeira (talk) 16:41, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom at Ace Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history. For this month, and following on the recent Art+Feminism campaign, we'll focus on building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

French translation
I just completed my translation of Musée Saint-Raymond and wonder if you would proofread it as I see you listed as a French-English translator and seem to be one of the few active editors from that page. My primary concern is the sense of the three quotes, whose text is linked in the notes section. Besides that and a general grammatical review, it could use some more sources and I have added some links on the talk page. Ping me if you have any questions. An update from the Sustainability Initiative
Hi, Daniel Case! Thank you again for supporting the Sustainability Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. Over the past two years, more than 200 Wikipedians from all over the world have come together to push the Wikimedia movement towards greater sustainability.
What's new?
We are writing you this message because there is great news: The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has finally passed a resolution stating that the Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. Also, we have created a cool logo and found a nice name for the project which you can see on the right :-)
What's next?
Currently, we are working with Wikimedia Foundation staff to make sustainability a key priority for the selection of a new location for Wikimedia servers in Singapore. Also, we have presented the Wikimedia Foundation with a green energy roadmap to have all Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy by 2019.
Please help!
Let's keep this project moving forward – and there are several ways in which you can help:
- Ask other Wikipedians to sign the project page as well – this way we can show the Wikimedia Foundation that this is an issue that the community really cares about.
- Talk to Wikimedians you know about the importance of reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement.
- Improve and translate the project page on Meta.
If you have any questions, you can contact us on on Meta. Again, thank you very much for your support! --Aubrey and Gnom (talk) 22:16, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for responding to my message and current problems that I am having
Hi, I will stick to two current issues at a time. The first being is about sources that I was using. For some reason ycdtotv.com was put on the spam list and I don't know why. I don't think it shouldn't have been and would like to see it removed from there. I need to use sources from that website for some Wikipedia articles that exist as well as one that I am currently making. If I can't be removed for some reason can I ever use it a sources for Wiki pages? The second is other sources that I have used and am currently using. On the Disappearance of Dorothy Forstein page that I created I was using websites that people though were not creditable but I think they are, so could you please check out the pages history and old sources and tell me if you think they are suitable to use. And some editor asked me not to use a YouTube video for an article (the page is wrestler Bambi Hall which I also created) and said is wasn't creditable, yet the video was an add from the wrestling company itself so it was creditable, as YouTube videos sometimes are reliable sources. Please let me know what you think. I will address my next issues in my next message to you. Davidgoodheart (talk) 01:31, 18 April 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for your contributions to a piece of justice, Heffernan v. City of Paterson: "This article is about a recent US Supreme Court decision regarding First Amendment protections of public employees. The first amendment protects the rights of public employees, and the Court has previously held that being fired or demoted for political speech or political association is unconstitutional, but in this case, Heffernan was fired not for what he did but what his employer mistakenly thought he did. The Court had to answer whether public employees are protected when their employer bases their decision on factually incorrect information." --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:28, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi Daniel, I regret agreeing to go ahead with the DYK nom, for various reasons, mostly the difficulty of coming up with 200 characters that clearly explain what happened. I don't know whether I need to be consulted as the article's creator; I can't recall the DYK rules. But for whatever it's worth, my preference is not to nominate it for DYK. Can you help verify translations of articles from russian
Hello Daniel Case,
Would you be able to help evaluate the accuracy of translations of Wikipedia articles from russian to English Wikipedia?
This would involve evaluating a translated article on the English Wikipedia by comparing it to the original russian article, and marking it "Pass" or "Fail" based on whether the translation faithfully represents the original. Here's the reason for this request:
There are a number of articles on English Wikipedia that were created as machine translations from different languages including russian , using the Content Translation tool, sometimes by users with no knowledge of the source language. The config problem that allowed this to happen has since been fixed, but this has left us with a backlog of articles whose accuracy of translation is suspect or unknown, including some articles translated from russian. In many cases, other editors have come forward later to copyedit and fix any English grammar or style issues, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the translation is accurate, as factual errors from the original translation may remain. To put it another way: Good English is not the same as good translation.
If you can help out, that would be great. Here's a sample of the articles that need checking:
- Sergey_Musaelyan✓ Pass Much of the history needs to be put in the past tense, although it is otherwise properly translated. Daniel Case (talk) 17:02, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

A problem with the Asha Degree article
Hey. You might want to take a look at the article's talk page. A point you inserted on the 26th Feb '16 included references to contents found in her bag that weren't backed up by the sources cited. Just thought I'd give you a heads up that I've taken that claim down until a proper source is found (which I've been told is unlikely, since this Wikipedia page and someone's personal blog are apparently the only places that make the claim about what was in the bag). Thought it was a case of vandalism until I tracked it down to the article's most prolific contributor. Sorry if the Talk entry was harsh!Jesuschristonacamel (talk) 03:49, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

A Group of Items v. United States
Since you've written some of these articles about major in rem cases, I wondered if you might know the answer to my question.
Most of these cases are Seizing Jurisdiction v. A Bunch of Items Meeting a Certain Description, but I found a few in reverse, e.g. Quantity of Books v. Kansas and 62 Cases of Jam v. United States. Can you imagine where these names came from? The books weren't trying to seize Kansas, and the jam wasn't trying to seize the United States; I'm left wondering why they weren't Kansas v. Quantity of Books and United States v. 62 Cases of Jam. Nyttend (talk) 23:43, 28 July 2017 (UTC)
- Hm, okay, thank you. I've seen Person v. Entity (or Citizen v. Elected Official) before, but I figured they were always someone suing the entity or the official, e.g. the Baker v. Carr travesty. Nyttend (talk) 03:32, 29 July 2017 (UTC)

Query on reliability of a source
Hi. Since my question was unanswered twice in Reliable Source noticeboard, I think that it is appropriate to ask an admin. I am working on the Syed Shahabuddin article with the hope of promoting it to the GA status. In this article I have used this Source as a reference. I am wondering whether it is a reliable source for sourcing details about Mr. Shahabuddin's political, diplomatic career and amongst others. The author of the text of the source is a former Indian Foreign Service Officer and appears to be his colleague. Please share your thoughts. Thanks. RRD (talk) 12:19, 5 August 2017 (UTC)

- Daniel, hi. The leading image in the above DYK target article is either mislabeled (as a Roman soldier, which it plainly isn't), or else is the wrong image. I suspect it's the latter. Thanks, Haploidavey (talk) 12:45, 3 September 2017 (UTC)
- Re: your reply at my talk. Yes, it's relatively recent (1st Century). It's an "archaizing-style" head, but not of a Roman soldier. It might well be intended as representation of an Achaemenid soldier - though I'm only guessing at that. I've left details and links on the target page for the DYK. Cheers! - Please see the comments on my edit to the article. I'm thinking you need to finely review the article for omissions, mistakes, and goofs. I read ref 6
- There was another alleged Smith sighting, this one near Rittenhouse Square. That seems more promising to Jeffrey Smith, Judith's husband, whom Judith accompanied to Philadelphia on a business trip before disappearing.
- Please see the comments on my edit to the article. I'm thinking you need to finely review the article for omissions, mistakes, and goofs. I read ref 6
- Frank Lewis calls Ed Geigert, the local private eye working for Jeffrey Smith, to ask about the Society Hill Hotel sighting. Geigert tells Lewis that a guy named Victor Fiorello contacted Smith on Friday after seeing a woman looking remarkably like the picture of Judith Smith on the front of City Paper.
- "It was about 5:55 a.m.," says Fiorello. "I was on my way to work at Blue Cross when I was coming out of the Wawa at 20th and Locust. What caught my attention was a fairly well-dressed, older white woman who was sitting outside a gourmet grocery store. It caught my attention because it was so early in the morning and you don't normally see that."
- After realizing that he had seen her face before, in the newspaper, Fiorello says he called 911 from work.
- and can't imagine what the corresponding paragraph in the article is trying to say. Please go back and verify that the refs say what the article text says. Shenme (talk) 02:45, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Sunday November 19, 10:30 am - 4:00pm: Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon

The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be the Metropolitan Museum of Art's second edit-a-thon, hosted on Sunday November 19, 2017 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City. Following the first Met edit-a-thon in May 2017, the museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely.
Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords. Light snacks, drinks and cake will be provided. We also welcome remote participation for the global online Wikipedia Asian Art Month, running November 1-30. Your GA nomination of Murder of Sherri Rasmussen
Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article
- @Mike Christie: Thanks for doing this! I was afraid I'd have to wait a year the way things were going (to think that there was a time when five months backlogging at GAN seemed intolerable!). I will be making those changes within a couple of days, when I finish up another article I'm working on. Daniel Case (talk) 06:10, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, a five month backlog would seem perfectly fine now! However, things appear to be moving, for some reason; there were 614 unreviewed articles in early December, and only 459 now. That's about a 25% drop in the backlog in just six weeks -- let's hope it continues. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 13:44, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

- Sure, Daniel. I get that. I do self-police before making an edit, asking myself if a) it is actually worth the time I am going to have to spend on this and b) if it is being too nitpicky.
- I pretty much follow BRD when it comes to these sorts of situations. One I put the edit in, I expect someone to explain why it isn't a good edit, either in a follow-up edit summary or (preferably) by initiating talk page discussion - especially when I suggest it.
- I was pretty tired, too; I had finished a midnight feeding and was using Wikipedia to bore my mind back to sleep when I came across the article in question: List of Mysterious Vanishings is a favorite, because the sheer weight of links there is usually my Cure To Insomnia (that and Chemistry-related articles). Also, DavidGoodHeart does a pretty good job monitoring, so not a lot of bad entries go un-smited. Maybe neither of us should have posted. Cie la vie.
- Long story short, maybe an RfC will benefit us. I do tend to be strict on See Also sections and, were Ranker not so problematic, the addition of a source would ended my concerns. - Jack Sebastian (talk) 13:24, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

Hey, Daniel, it's been a while since we had contact for the last time. Lately I translated the above mentioned article into DE:WP (which itself closed a circle begun in June 2009) but I totally left out the history section which since 2015 has a label that sources are missing. And they are missing entirely.
Since I know you as a prolific writer of NRHP and/or NY articles I would like to commit you ;-) in improving this section so later I can take it for the German Wikipedia. I could in return help with some German language sources as for example this one, if necessary. My English is probably good enough for talk pages but not sufficiently for articles' prose itself. Invitation to WikiProject Portals
The Portals WikiProject has been rebooted.
You are invited to
There are sections on the WikiProject page dedicated to tasks (including WikiGnome tasks too), and areas on the talk page for discussing the improvement and automation of the various features of portals.
Many complaints have been lodged in the RfC to delete all portals, pointing out their various problems. They say that many portals are not maintained, or have fallen out of date, are useless, etc. Many of the !votes indicate that the editors who posted them simply don't believe in the potential of portals anymore.
It's time to change all that. Let's give them reasons to believe in portals, by revitalizing them.
The best response to a deletion nomination is to fix the page that was nominated. The further underway the effort is to improve portals by the time the RfC has run its course, the more of the reasons against portals will no longer apply. RfCs typically run 30 days. There are 19 days left in this one. Let's see how many portals we can update and improve before the RfC is closed, and beyond.
A healthy WikiProject dedicated to supporting and maintaining portals may be the strongest argument of all not to delete.
We may even surprise ourselves and exceed all expectations. Who knows what we will be able to accomplish in what may become the biggest Wikicollaboration in years.
Let's do this.
See ya at the WikiProject!
Sincerely, — The Transhumanist 10:19, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

Portals WikiProject update, April 22, 2018
Thank you for joining the Portals WikiProject.
Here's our first project-wide update. I hope you enjoy it...
Reboot
The WikiProject reboot has been a success: the new re-envisioned project is up and running, with new members, ongoing discussions about automation, design, and upkeep; maintained task queques; and updates to members, like this, the very first one!
The RfC
As you know, there's a proposal to delete all portals. It started out looking pretty dismal for portals, with primarily posts supporting their demise. It turned out that the proposer didn't post a deletion notice on the very pages being nominated for deletion (a requirement for all deletion discussions). Once that was done, a flood of opposition came in and has apparently turned the tide.
RfCs generally run for 30 days. It started April 8th, and so it has about 14 more days to run its course.
The more work we can do during that time on the portals, the stronger the reasons for keeping them will be. And the more prepared we will be for any
AWB?
You may be wondering why we asked for AWB experience in the member-sign-up list.
We are gearing up to do maintenance runs on the entire set of portals, and the more people we have who can use AWB, the better.
But we're not quite ready to start this yet.
To be able to use AWB on the portals, we first need to know what the end result needs to be. Like on the news sections, do we comment out the out-of-date ones, or do we place the code to activate the newsbot on those pages? That would require an assessment of WikiNews and its news generating performance (areas covered, volume in each area), etc.
You can help us figure this out at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Portals#Discussions about news sections.
Another area we're gearing up for, to do passes with AWB, are upgrades to the intro sections of portals. Many of these have static (copied/pasted) excerpts that go stale over time.
We're trying to figure out how to make self-updating excerpts to replace the existing static excerpts that are on many portals, and once this is done, AWB will be used to place the new code. See the discussion on this at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Portals#Discussions about selective transclusion in intros.
"What can I do?"
There are 3 major areas of activity right now:
Update the main portal list at Portal:Contents/Portals
There are a few hundred existing portals that are missing from this list.
The list of missing entries, and instructions on what to do, can be found at
We need everybody's help on this. It's a big chore for one persons. But, many hands make light work. Please help chip away at this chore as much as you can. A little each day, form all of us, will get this done pretty quick.
Familiarize yourself with the portal system
In addition to browsing the portals in the 2 lists mentioned in the section above, you should take a look at the portal name space itself and what is in it.
That can be done at Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals#Watchlist.
Join in on the discussions
There are discussions on many aspects of the WikiProject's operations, with more to come.
Such as about the purposes and functions of portals, design discussions, and so on.
There's even a automated design discussion over at Village Pump Technical, on selective transclusion.
I hope to see you on the talk page.
What's coming?
In addition to the automation efforts mentioned above, we will be looking into how to automate the selection and display of alternating excerpts, and alternating pictures, for the various portal sections.

DYK nomination of Crowdless Game
Announcerless Game
Hi, glad you liked my suggestion for the page name of
- @Yoninah: The difference here is that that game is a) over 35 years in the past and b) the only major sporting contest telecast anywhere, as far as I know, without any announcers. It also seems to be commonly referred to that way (although, after reviewing the usage elsewhere, I suppose I could lowercase the "g"). Daniel Case (talk) 14:54, 26 April 2018 (UTC)

New and easier way to handle excerpts
Attention portal maintainers!
There's a new template to improve existing and new portals, called {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.
It is a lot easier to use than copying and pasting text from articles, as it displays the paragraphs you specify automatically for you.
It makes excerpts so that they are always current and never go stale or
It is more powerful than it looks, because it has the Lua Module:Excerpt supporting it.
Be careful, as it is alpha software. Please notify the WikiProject talkpage of any problems you come across.
To give you a sense of the reaction this template is generating, here is an excerpt of a discussion thread from the WikiProject's talk page:
- This new template is fantastic. I've added it to the intro sections of the portals on Australian cities (eg P:PER) and it works brilliantly. My compliments to its creators. It can probably also be used in other sections of many portals (eg "Selected article" and "Selected biography"), and, for that reason, will probably make the task of maintaining portals a great deal easier. Bahnfrend (talk) 09:02, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for being so brave. Portal:Adelaide/Intro just got a lot simpler! Certes (talk) 10:43, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
- Kudos on a wonderful template. — The Transhumanist 03:27, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
- This is amazing stuff. I'm going to get to work on using it on the selected content at most of these portals very soon. WaggersTALK 13:40, 25 April 2018 (UTC)

RFC
As you know, the (April 8th) proposal to delete all portals and the portal namespace inspired the reboot of this WikiProject. RfCs typically run for 30 days, which means there are 5 days left including today, before the RfC will be closed. The !votes are predominantly "oppose", but many editors have shared their disappointment with the portal system. We have our work cut out for us in correcting the problems of the portals to address their concerns. Complaints ranged from being out of date and lacking maintenance, to taking up the time of editors that they felt (due to low traffic) would be better spent improving articles.
Anti-WikiProject drama
This past week has been somewhat stressful for me, with more than a little conflict...
It culminated with my being reported at the Administrator's Noticeboard "for spamming and canvassing". This is the second time I've been reported there during the RfC; the first one was for posting notices of the deletion discussion (the RfC) at the top of all portal pages.
The accusations were 1) Posting notices of the deletion discussion (the RfC) at the top of all portal pages, 2) Adding an Article alerts section to the Portals WikiProject page, and 3) posting notices (invitations) about this WikiProject on user talk and portal talk pages.
None of which fall under the Wikipedia definitions of spamming or canvassing.
Thank you, Lionelt and Lepricavark, for coming to my rescue. I don't know how the discussion would have turned out if you had not spoken up.
The discussion was closed as "no action necessary".
After that, the person responsible posted their thoughts to my talk page. Here they are, with my response:
Congratulations, it appears your relentless targeted advertising of the RFC, your beating the RFC Supporters with a stick by posting countless times there, your dishonest insistence that Current Events was on the chopping block, and your obstruction of clean up efforts at MfD are paying dividends. Have fun playing with Portal space where no one will read your work. I'm sure someone will eventually clean up the mess when your interest wanes. Cheers. Legacypac
- Thank you. I accept your congratulations on behalf of Wikiproject Portals and the portal-loving community – it was a team effort. In addition, I'd like to clarify some things about your claims above...
- Each page nominated for deletion must have a notice at the top of its page, per the deletion guideline. Not to have one there, would be unfair to those who use such pages, and would constitute a secret deletion tribunal. We don't do things that way on Wikipedia.
- As new facts became available (e.g., a motivated and thriving WikiProject to support the portals, new building blocks, etc.), it was appropriate to post the developments to the RfC, to support informed decision making.
- Proposals are literal, not figurative. The proposal specified "all portals". All means all.
- The fact is, the rebooted WikiProject is cleaning up the mess, rather rapidly. By updating and upgrading the portals, rather than getting rid of them.
- I think I'll be hanging around for awhile, but the project is more than likely to achieve critical mass and may outlive us all, due in part to the development of tools to assist editors in building, upgrading, and maintaining portals that are fully dynamic and self-updating.
- Portals are more fun to work with than ever. Thank you for your role in making this happen. You made us try even harder, and inspired us to pull together as a team. You'll have a warm place in our hearts, forever. The Transhumanist

Automatically refreshed excerpts
The main advancement we've made so far is applying
Obsoleting subpages
Excerpts are migrating toward the base page of each portal, and where this is done, a subpage is no longer needed.
Template:Transclude lead excerpt will be able to be used to put the intro excerpt directly on the portal page, rather than on an intro subpage, once we adapt a portal design to accommodate this.
Template:Transclude random excerpt is currently being used on 1st-level subpages, and eliminates the need for 2nd-level subpages. (Many portals have 2 levels of subpages).
There are about 1500 portals, but there are around 148,000 subpages in portal space. Further discussions are needed to develop designs and components that do not require them.
It is my hope that the portal of the future will be a single page, or close to it, pulling in excerpts from specified dynamic sources (like category pages), filtered by ratings. This would obviate the need for subpages at all (except for maybe the header and footer subpages, which store a portal's settings). A more likely near-term solution would be subpages with a list maintained by a bot, or editors using semi-automatic tools.
New portals
Since the reboot, a new portal has been created:

Help us design granular blocks! Hello :-) The Anti-Harassment Tools team at the Wikimedia Foundation will start building these granular blocking tools in a few weeks and we've asked WMF designer Alex Hollender to help us make some wireframes so the tools are intuitive to MediaWiki users.
We have a first draft of how we think this tool should work. You can read the full proposed implementation here but here are the significant parts:
- Granular blocks (page, category, namespace, and file uploading) will be built on top of Special:Block. These blocks will function as if they were regular blocks and allow for the same options, but only take effect on specific pages.
- We will add a new checkbox for "Block this user from the whole site" which will be checked by default. When it is unchecked the admin will be able to specify which pages, categories, and/or namespaces the user should be blocked from editing.
- Granular blocks can be combined and/or overlap. (For example, a user could be simultaneously blocked from editing the articles Rain, Thunder, Lightning, and all pages inside the Category:Weather.)
- Only one block is set at a time, to adjust what the user is blocked from the administrator would have to modify the existing block.
- Block logs should display information about the granular block
- When a blocked user attempts to edit an applicable page, they should see a block warning message which include information on their block (reason, expiration, what they are blocked from, etc.)
- If a category is provided, the blocked user cannot edit either the category page itself and all pages within the category.
- If the File: namespace is blocked, the user should not be allowed to upload files.
We like this direction because it builds on top of the existing block system, both a technical and usability wise. Before we get too far along with designs and development we'd like to hear from you about our prosposal:
- What do you think of the proposed implementation?
- We believe this should be an expansion of Special:Block, but it has been suggested that this be a new special page. What are your thoughts?
- Should uploading files be combined with a File namespace block, or as a separate option? (For example, if combined, when a user is blocked from the File namespace, they would neither be able to edit any existing pages in the File namespace nor upload new files.)
- Should there be a maximum number of things to be blocked from? Or should we leave it up to admin discretion?
We appreciate your feedback on this project's talk page or by email. For the Anti-Harassment Tools team, SPoore (WMF) (talk) , Trust and Safety Specialist, Community health initiative (talk) 20:54, 9 May 2018 (UTC)

WikiProject Portals update, 11 May 2018
We've grown to 73 members, and morale is high. Thank you for joining. Here is some news, and some tasks...
The RfC will be closed soon...
2018-05-11: preparations are being made to close the RfC. See
When there, be sure to notice the consultation link.
We're trying to get a prototypical single-page portal developed in time to show the RfC closers before they make their final decision. You can help. It's Portal:Humanism. So far, we've applied selective transclusion (automation) to excerpts, and have made the following sections without subpages: intro, selected article, selected biography, categories, related portals, wikiprojects, things to do, and wikimedia. Eight down, 4 to go, plus 2 formatting subpages (not sure we can migrate those). Automating every section, would also be nice.
Main objectives
Our main objectives currently, are:
- Replace static excerpts with selective transclusions, so that the excerpts always stay fresh (that is, match the source content). We are now doing this on the portal base page as much as possible, to reduce the number of subpages that are needed. See #2...
- Migrate the functions of subpages to the portal base pages. There are around 150,000 subpages in portal space. We aim to make these obsolete by using templates and other calls from the portal base pages.
- Improve portal design to make portals self-update. Semi-dynamic sections update from a static list, as used in {{Transclude random excerpt}}. Fully-dynamic sections would update from a list maintained elsewhere on Wikipedia, like a category. We haven't found a way to do this yet, other than to create a bot (which we will probably need to do).
Maintenance pass #1: Upgrading the intro section
The intro section of many portals transcludes an "Intro" subpage that has an excerpt in it.
We're replacing that with a selective transclusion directly in the intro section, bypassing the subpage. Though, there's a little more to it...
For instructions, see: Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals#Transclude intro excerpt directly on the portal base page.
Please skip Portal:American Civil War, as that is specifically being maintained by hand.
Maintenance pass #2: Obsoleting the Wikimedia subpages
One of the sections on many portals links to sister projects on the subject. This needlessly takes a subpage. The subpage can be made obsolete by using the template {{Wikimedia for portals}} directly on the portal base page.
This has been done for several hundred portals so far.
See Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals#Obsolete a Wikimedia subpage for instructions.
Maintenance pass #3: calling the category tree from the portal base page
Certes figured out how...
{{subst:Text|<category|tree>}}{{subst:PAGENAME}}{{subst:Text|</categorytree>}}
For more information, see the thread Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals#Rendering PAGENAME inside categorytree tag doesn't work (it does now).
More to come...
In the meantime, see ya around the portals! — The Transhumanist 15:33, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
P.S.: Daniel, please update your listing at Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals#Project members (remove or replace the double asterisks). Thank you. -TT

The RfC discussion to eliminate portals was closed May 12, with the statement "There exists a strong consensus against deleting or even deprecating portals at this time." This was made possible because you and others came to the rescue. Thank you for speaking up.
By the way, the current issue of the Signpost features an article with interviews about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.
I'd also like to let you know that the Portals WikiProject is working hard to make sure your support of portals was not in vain. Toward that end, we have been working diligently to innovate portals, while building, updating, upgrading, and maintaining them. The project has grown to 80 members so far, and has become a beehive of activity.
Our two main goals at this time are to automate portals (in terms of refreshing, rotating, and selecting content), and to develop a one-page model in order to make obsolete and eliminate most of the 150,000 subpages from the portal namespace by migrating their functions to the portal base pages, using technologies such as selective transclusion. greetings
Yes, when I was first on wikipedia when it all smelt like a primary school exercise - us-centric, trains, ships - hardly railway or maritime inclusive....and the globalise tag was more commonly found across the board to challenge the attempts at one size fits all....
I would have no problem if you simply identified in the title, lead sentence or lead paragraph that it is a us based cultural phenomenon (I hardly imagine that most details are relevant to india or china for instance)... you really deserve a prize walk across NY with somebody you admire... my recent walk from the meatpacking to fifth (I think it was) to get my lifetime visit to strand book store was singular, and alone - your considerate response requires something more substantive than my reply. JarrahTree 23:49, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
Actually reading your open and honest appraisal of your life experiences on your user page - I have a real thing about being on the hudson after doing amtrak between NY and montreal last year and toronto in 2009 - and even more so niagara region (complex personal background issues regarding my father living just west of toronto a very long time ago) and niagara iced wine... Template:Did you know nominations/Brett Cantor isn't going to run on July 30 unless you respond immediately
Daniel Case, this nomination has run into some issues that must be resolved immediately if the hook stands any chance of being inserted into the queue that's going to be promoted in about 21 hours from now. It would be a shame if it didn't get promoted, so I hope you see this in time. Best of luck! BlueMoonset (talk) 02:25, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
- I'm very sorry to have bothered you; I have no idea why the nomination was showing up as unpromoted on my screen on the Approved page when it had already been promoted and is in the queue even as I type this now. This is the second time this evening I've not seen the latest version of a page, and in this case I was completely wrong about the status quo, so I think I'd better call it a night, and then force refresh everything in the morning when I next start any DYK work. Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals update #024, 26 Dec 2018
Last issue, I mentioned there would be a flood, and so, here it is...
Portals status
We now have 4,620 portals.
And the race to pass 5,000 by year's end is on...
Can we make it?
The New Year, and the 5,001st portal, await.
( New portals are created with {{subst:Basic portal start page}}
or
{{subst:bpsp}}
)
Evad is back!
After disappearing in mid-thread, Evad37 has returned from a longer than expected wikibreak.
Be sure to welcome him back.
Improved cropping is coming to Portal image banner
User:FR30799386 is working on making {{Portal image banner}} even better by enabling it to chop the top off an image as well as the bottom.
Many pictures aren't suitable for banners because they are too tall. Therefor, User:FR30799386 added cropping to this template, so that an editor could specify part of a picture to be used rather than the whole thing.
