Something for you!

I award you with this in recognition of many valuable contributions to Balkan, especially Serbian and Albanian, history, and for not fearing to enter some very explosive minefields like Skanderbeg. Keep up the good work! Cheers, Constantine 17:43, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 June newsletter

Apologies for the lateness of this letter; our usual bot wasn't working. We are now entering round 4, our semi-finals, and have our final 16. A score of 243 was required to reach this round; significantly more than 2011's 76 points, and only a little behind 2010's 250 points. By comparison, last year, 150 points in round 4 secured a place in the final; in 2010, 430 were needed. Commiserations to Pool A's Minas Gerais igordebraga (submissions), who scored 242 points, missing out on a place in the round by a whisker. However, congratulations to Pool B's Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), whose television articles have brought him another round victory. Pool A's Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second overall, with an impressive list of biological did you knows, good articles and featured articles. Third overall was Pool D's New York City Muboshgu (submissions), with a long list of contibutions, mostly relating to baseball. Of course, with the points resetting every round, the playing field has been levelled. The most successful Pool was Pool D, which saw seven into the final round. Pool B saw four, C saw three and Pool A saw only the two round leaders.

A quick note about other competitions taking place on Wikipedia which may be of interest. There are 13 days remaining in the

Disruption

This edit of yours is highly disruptive as you deleted sourced content. That being said as you have received ARBMAC warnings regarding Skanderbeg-related topics, it'd be prudent to avoid such edits. Btw if you can't contribute in English just avoid editing as contributions like men left despot's forces after despot's defeat only lower the article's (already low) quality.--— ZjarriRrethues — talk 14:44, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

Will you please be so kind to present the sourced assertion which I deleted?--Antidiskriminator (talk) 05:45, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
There's nothing related to NPA regarding comments about proper prose. You removed the alliance with Venice and I let you know about the article in order to avoid any unnecessary discussion afterwards. Of course feel free to add anything that I may neglect to include.--— ZjarriRrethues — talk 20:03, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
The source says that "none of these figures actually mobilized to help Venice militarily", i.e. there was no alliance with Venice. Your accusation was unjustified. --Antidiskriminator (talk) 22:45, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

George Castriot, surnamed Scanderbeg, king of Albania, p. 20: "But these domestic intrigues were, for a while, interrupted by the weight and importance of foreign affairs ; for war was declared against George, Lord of Misia, commonly called the Despot of Servia. It is said that Amurath was induced by two ..." Is this true? And where exactly did Misia lie, which towns and forts did it have, it would be great if a map was added.--Zoupan 14:42, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

I should have noted that. But what possessions did the Balšić brothers have?--Zoupan 15:09, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
I agree. No problem, its just copyediting.
  • Schmitt 2005, p. 167: "Die von den Balsici beherrschten Gebiete zwischen Kruja und der Küste"
  • Gopčević 1914, p. 74: "in Misia(1)" - there is a footnote, but I can't see it.
- no idea what it says
Just received your reply, interesting. Is there not even one map of medieval Albania during the League of Lezhe by any scholar?--Zoupan 15:41, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
Kruje-Shkoder region makes the districts of Shkodër, Pukë, Lezhë, Mirditë, Kurbin possible, and Zaharia held Sati and Dagnum, and Spani held mountains behind Drivasto. In the vicinity, there is a "Mise" and "Myselimi" in Postribë. "Mushan" in Dajç. And some more toponyms which might be connected, but nothing can be known without scholarship. Elsie does not explain where Misia is.--Zoupan 16:29, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

Revolt of 1432

I've been writing for some time an article on the event, so please don't add yet another article with disconnected sentences etc. on the mainspace, but wait for me to finish and then add whatever it is that you think that I haven't written. --— ZjarriRrethues — talk 00:12, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

Can you please present a link to the draft which you started in your userspace?--Antidiskriminator (talk) 05:55, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
I always work offline and I have written an almost complete article, so please don't add on mainspace your draft, not to mention that there's nothing about it that's not included in what I've already written.--— ZjarriRrethues — talk 07:32, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
It is obviously impossible to verify your claim about the draft you started since it is in offwiki space. You expect me to AGF in your case which is not easy because:
  1. your request is unnecessary harsh (so please don't add yet another article with disconnected sentences etc.)
  2. this is not the first time you write me comments like this (i.e. diff). It was described as incivility and you were warned not to engage in further ethno-nationalist tendentious editing ...misrepresenting sources .... in incivility or personal attacks.
  3. you yourself started two articles in the mainspace right after I started drafts in my userspace (link).
Will you please be so kind and reply to my above question which hopefully help me to AGF in your case and respect your request.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 08:41, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 July newsletter

We're approaching the beginning of 2012's final round. Pool A sees Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) as the leader, with 300 points being awarded for the featured article Bivalvia, and Pool B sees Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) in the lead, with 10 good articles, and over 35 articles eligible for good topic points. Pool A sees New York City Muboshgu (submissions) in second place with a number of articles relating to baseball, while Pool B's Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions) follows Grapple X, with a variety of contributions including the high-scoring, high-importance featured article on the 2010 film Pride & Prejudice. Ruby2010, like Grapple X, also claimed a number of good topic points; despite this, not a single point has been claimed for featured topics in the contest so far. The same is true for featured portals.

Currently, the eighth-place competitor (and so the lowest scorer who would reach the final round right now) has scored 332, more than double the 150 needed to reach the final round last year. In 2010, however, 430 was the lowest qualifying score. In this competition, we have generally seen scores closer to those in 2010 than those in 2011. Let's see what kind of benchmark we can set for future competitions! WikiCup 2012 August newsletter

The final is upon us! We are down to our final 8. A massive 573 was our lowest qualifying score; this is higher than the 150 points needed last year and the 430 needed in 2010. Even in 2009, when points were acquired for mainspace edit count in addition to audited content, 417 points secured a place. That leaves this year's WikiCup, by one measure at least, our most competitive ever. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) once again finishes the round in first place, leading Pool B. Grapple X writes articles about television, and especially The X-Files and Millenium, with good articles making up the bulk of the score.
  2. Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) led Pool A this round. Fourth-place finalist last year, Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, and has reached the final primarily off the back of his massive number of did you knows.
  3. Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions) was second in Pool B. Ruby2010 writes primarily on television and film, and scores primarily from good articles.
  4. Scotland Casliber (submissions) finished third in Pool B. Casliber is something of a WikiCup veteran, having finished sixth in 2011 and fourth in 2010. Casliber writes on the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. Over half of Casliber's points this round were bonus points from the high-importance articles he has worked on.
  5. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second in Pool A. Also writing on biology, especially marine biology, Cwmhiraeth received 390 points for one featured article (Bivalvia) and one good article (pelican), topping up with a large number of did you knows.
  6. New York City Muboshgu (submissions) was third in Pool A. Muboshgu writes primarily on baseball, and this round saw Muboshgu's first featured article, Derek Jeter, promoted on its fourth attempt at FAC.
  7. Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions) was fourth in Pool A. She writes on a variety of topics, including horses, but this round also saw the high-importance lettuce reach featured article status.
  8. Canada Sasata (submissions) is another WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist in 2009 and 2010. He writes mostly on mycology.

However, we must also say goodbye to the eight who did not make the final, having fallen at the last hurdle:

1111tomica (submissions
). We hope to see you all next year.

Rereward, frankly, I think you're focusing too much on things you don't like about the way Antidiskriminator speaks to you. Please try to look past that to whatever point it is that's being made, because I don't find AD's tone any different from what's normal all over this site. It might be agreeable if there was never ever the slightest tinge of sarcasm in talkpage comments and edit summaries, but, well, as long as the comments aren't sneering and unpleasant, it tends to be regarded as acceptable. And if you think AD was sneering at you in the conversation you linked or the edit summary you quoted there, I think you might be overinterpreting his wording. Please think about it. Bishonen | talk 21:35, 5 September 2012 (UTC).
Thanks, Bishonen. Good advice. Antid is clearly brilliant and also incredibly helpful when choosing to answer questions specifically on the discussion pages. Still, do not bite the newcomers is a good idea that will only help Antid to allow others to hear his usually excellent arguments.--Rereward (talk) 22:03, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Re: WikiProject Serbia

Hello,

These are very interesting questions, but they are also hard to answer.

Big number of unassessed articles. Indeed, almost 3,000. Also, quite probably, a sizable number of untagged articles. ([4][5][6]). This should be treated like a backlog, really. Article assessment is not a straightforward task, so it is naturally suited to more experienced editors. Plan: find some candidates, give them a tool or two, initiate project-wide discussions whenever something's doubtful, try to generate awareness and interest in the wider circle of editors. And hard work, of course...

Lack of editors who are active in the project. Same problem for WP Croatia, obviously: less than 30 active members. Fortunately, some of them are really outstanding contributors, and I guess this is what compensates for the lack of brute force. No easy solutions here. Plan: identify non-members who contribute within the scope and invite them, and motivate members to contribute more. The members should be aware of each other's work, the project's page should advertise it - this is a powerful motivation.

Introduction of formal assessment procedures. My guess is the less formal the better, especially in the beginning. Whether the project needs e.g. an assessment subpage is anyone's guess, it's hard to say. It's important for members to be aware of assessment process, even if they are themselves not familiar with the mechanism - they could always inquire in the project's talk page ("Hey, I've just written an article about XY, how would you assess it?").

Any other thing you think could help WikiProject Serbia. I like DYKs. (And so do you, apparently...) It is gratifying for the editor, it is good for Wikipedia as a very strong generator of above-average quality content, and it is good for the project (content, visibility, cooperation, motivation). DYK collaborations between two or more editors are great. I wish more people did DYKs. GregorB (talk) 14:06, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi! I noticed your question regarding these issues at GregorB's talk and I thought to add an issue which might be of use to WP:Croatia, but you might take a look if you feel that the proposed approach may be of interest to WP:Serbia.--Tomobe03 (talk) 12:31, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

Sources, copyvio, POV

Apart from the outdated sources that you shouldn't have been using either way and the use of out of context quotes from some sources, you've misrepresented almost every quote you've used. As examples I've added the quotes you've used from Buda's work on the talkpage. Also you can't copy almost half a page from Inalcik as that's

WP:COPYVIO. Btw the actual info about Pal stops very quickly and from there it reads almost as a copy from Gjon Kastrioti, so that should be trimmed to the essentials.--— ZjarriRrethues — talk

WikiCup 2012 September newsletter

We're over half way through the final, and so it is less than a month until we know for certain our 2012 WikiCup champion. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) currently leads, followed by Canada Sasata (submissions), Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and Scotland Casliber (submissions). However, we have no one resembling a breakaway leader, and so the competition is a long way from over. Next month's newsletter will feature a list of our winners (who are not necessarily only the finalists) and keep your eyes open for an article on the WikiCup in a future edition of The Signpost. The leaders are already on a par with last year's winners, but a long way from the huge scores seen in 2010. That said, a repeat of the competition from 2010 seems unlikely.

It is good to see that three-quarters of our finalists have already scored bonus points this round. This shows that, contrary to criticism that the WikiCup has received in the past, the competition does not merely incentivise the writing of trivial articles; instead, our top competitors are still spending their time contributing to high-importance articles, and bringing them to a high standard. This does a great service to the encyclopedia and its readers. Thank you, and good work!

The planning for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Some

Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Re: Moba

Well, I'm sure if either of the two projects sets up a drive and invites members of the other to pitch in - there would be help offered. I, for one, would definitely lend a hand. Setting up a drive with achievable objectives (along with an invitation to help) would, IMHO, ensure that the process goes smoothly and that it improves the project as designed.--Tomobe03 (talk) 13:41, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

Arbitration enforcement request - please respond immediately

It's come to my attention that you are the subject of a

WP:ARBMAC, an arbitration case relating to Macedonia. Please respond immediately; if you ignore this message too, you risk being blocked from editing, as there will be nobody to defend your side of the case. --Rschen7754

See the result of the enforcement request here. You are banned indefinitely from the topic of Pavle Đurišić on all pages of Wikipedia. A one-year freeze has been imposed on any new move proposals for Territory of the Military Commander in Serbia. The ban may be appealed to the closing administrator, to AE or to Arbcom in the usual way. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you, EdJohnston (talk) 20:07, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Help with the assessment

There is a tool that could help with the unassessed WP Serbia articles. The idea is to find articles which are unassessed by WP Serbia, yet are already assessed by some other project. So, for example:

For these articles, the existing class could be copied to WP Serbia banner. Note however that not all assessments are reliable: e.g.

Timok (river)
, assessed as B, is a bit thin in referencing and looks more like a C class.

With the same tool one can also find articles that were assessed by WP Serbia as X, and by some other project as Y (Y<>X). These cases can be inspected further then. GregorB (talk) 17:31, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

No problem... Unfortunately, assessment can't be made easy, and that's why every bit of help is useful. GregorB (talk) 18:08, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
Well, there are no clear rules regarding importance (and that's part of what I meant when I said it "can't be made easy"). Generally speaking:
  • Rivers will probably range from high to low
  • Mountains too: very prominent ones are "high", important ones "mid", merely notable ones "low"
  • Cities (for Croatia, this means that every
    designated city
) are at least "mid". These are chiefly settlements with population of more than 5000, so villages and remaining towns are invariably assessed as "low".
To me, the difference between "mid" and "low" is best explained as follows:
Importance assessment Mid Low
Could be described as... Important Notable, but not important
Average native person has heard of it and knows something about it Very likely Probably not
Likely to appear in a national paper encyclopedia Very likely Somewhat likely to very unlikely
Note: this is my personal "yardstick" rather than an official policy (there is none). And it is subjective after all, it can't be helped. GregorB (talk) 21:46, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I thought there might be some official policy but I guess it is normal that importance is in the eye of the beholder.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 21:50, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
This tool works for start class articles.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 22:12, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
Although I generally agree with the above, there's a possible source of "inspiration" at Wikipedia:WikiProject Germany/Assessment#Importance scale - tailored to Germany, but you'll get the picture.--Tomobe03 (talk) 22:31, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Tomobe03. Maybe it would be good to create similar subpage on WPS or WPCro with similar guidelines in order to reduce possibility of non consistency of future ratings.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 22:51, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
Maybe, but there's no pressing need for those unless considerable numbers of editors perform such ratings - in which case their efforts need be coordinated. On the quality rating subject, I took a look at
cn}} tags where necessary (not as criticism per se, but pointers what need be added).--Tomobe03 (talk
) 11:22, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
Yes, you are right, both in case of Politikin Zabavnik (where I copied B class rating from WP Comics) and in case of "considerable numbers of editors" who perform such ratings. In order to attract more editors to resolve this huge backlog of unassessed articles I had an idea, besides 'moba' idea, to organize some kind of competition (diff). What do you think about it?--Antidiskriminator (talk) 11:40, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

If there are that many editors (presumably some of them misguided although acting in good faith), a review of some of the assessments may be useful. Wikiproject Good Articles employs a system (see

Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/GAN backlog elimination drives/June-July 2012) where 80% of GA reviews are themselves reviewed. In this case, that need not be that comprehensive, as I suspect it would be beneficial to have more experienced editors revisit 100% of those articles rated as B-Class and a couple of those assessed as C-Class by an individual editor performing the assessments. The reason for the former is to verify if something has been missed (that's possible even if a fairly experienced editor performed the rating) and the latter to take a look if a C-Class rating was applied too conservatively (or conceivably too relaxed) and advise that specific editor or even inspect more of their rating-edits if need be. Involving more editors in the drive will invariably lead to more work done and more erroneous ratings applied, but it is important to involve as many as possible and to devise a verification system to ensure that all the work amounts to an objective result allowing the wikiproject to develop more efficiently (i.e. map out a route to more featured and good content).--Tomobe03 (talk
) 12:16, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Yes, rating verification system is a good idea and developing wikiproject (involving more editors in the drive to resolve unassessed articles backlog is probably just one of many ways to do it) to have more featured and good content is what is most important. Thank you for your suggestions. --Antidiskriminator (talk) 12:51, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Untagged articles

Here is a list of articles that probably belong to WP Serbia, but are not tagged as such: http://toolserver.org/~magnus/catscan_rewrite.php?depth=3&categories=Serbia+stubs&templates_no=WikiProject+Serbia&templates_use_talk_no=1&doit=1 - quite a few of them, and these are just stubs. Prizes for first, second, third and fourth will be awarded, as will prizes for all those who reached the final eight. Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

Awards will be handed out in the coming days; please bear with us! This year's competition also saw fantastic contributions in all rounds, from newer Wikipedians contributing their first good or featured articles, right up to highly experienced Wikipedians chasing high scores and contributing to topics outside of their usual comfort zones. It would be impossible to name all of the participants who have achieved things to be proud of, but well done to all of you, and thanks! Wikipedia has certainly benefited from the work of this year's WikiCup participants.

Next year's WikiCup will begin in January. Currently,

sign up for next year's competition. There will be no further newsletters this year, although brief notes may be sent out in December to remind everyone about the upcoming competition. It's been a pleasure to work with you all, and we hope to see you all in January! J Milburn (talkemail) and The ed17 (talkemail
