Oh yes i wouldn't suggest changing full sized display of flags just the icons, this would be easy enough to implement in the template using #if Plugwash 20:00, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Seeing as how there are more and more worldwide realeses, via online download and such, I created a World alias for the flagicon template, using the flag to the right, per

Template:Infobox VG standards. Just type in "World" and there ya go. JQF

It might stand out to the eye, but for most people most flags are meaningless. They will recognize a few of the flags and no others; they are going to read the names anyway, and the names are nevertheless listed. Also, I do not see why "eye-catching" is relevant to an encyclopedia. Why don't we put graphic bars of relative lengths on the coastline page? Why don't we put a little filled clock next to all the times on the Olympic page? Texas isn't a country either, but {{flagicon|Texas}} works. As I see it, this template isn't meant to imply that something is a country; all it means is that there is a claimed political entity, and those who claim its existence also claim that it has a flag, and that this flag looks like this. The template makes no statement about the validity of the claim. It was designed for technical reasons to provide standardized icons for replacement of the assortment of defacto icons with various characteristics and naming conflicts. No, I can't explain the reasons the template is used. Read what I said in the "point" discussion above, particularly the link to the original "Village pump" excerpt. The template was created for standardization reasons, not usage reasons. I don't know the reasons flag icons were being used before the template existed, nor now. I know that now the icons have a more similar appearance. I know that I know only a few ways they are being used (such as sports and military), but I also know they are being used in other ways which I do not know. (SEWilco 04:34, 14 December 2006 (UTC))

In response to a request on my talk page, I have created a documentation subpage at Template:Flagicon/doc. Regarding the addition of the restriction text in the doc page - It isn't up to us to decide where the template can be used. It is here, it performs a certain task, and that's it. You know, there are so many flag variations that a "one size fits all" approach is impossible, IMO. Obviously, the size= override can be used to make adjustments as need be, but I think that the previous default of 22x20px is the best choice. There are a great number of instances where flagicons are used with a list, and the rendering looks significantly better when the flags all have the same width, so that the text lines up neatly. Since the majority of flags are wider than tall, I propose reverting back to the previous setting and if specific pages with Vatican City, Switzerland, etc. flags require some "tweaking", then size= can be used on those pages. I think 22x15px isn't that bad. Could you be more specific why you find the old 22x20px better than 22x15px? Can you point at some articles as examples which have suffered from the change to 22x15px? I don't mean to go to 30x15px but 22x15px could be a compromise. As I demonstrated above here, Australia, as a very long-flag example (two Switzerland flags would fit in that :-) hasn't changed at all by going to 22x15px. --

I think the 22x20px works better. There are many tables with text which is easier to read if the text is aligned. There may be some line spacing issues, depending upon the size font which a user's browser is using, but that should be less significant than the horizontal alignment issue. I don't think this is the place for that kind of discussion. In fact, there is some resistance to using flag icons altogether for that kind of situation (see

Wikipedia:Don't overuse flags). This talk page usually deals with technical issues around the templates that render the flag icons, not the policy of when and where they are appropriate. But to partially answer your question, you can get a 44 star US flag with {{flagicon|United States|1891}} and a 48 star flag with {{flagicon|United States|1912}}. Andrwsc

Before the declaration of independence of the State of Israel (pre-1948), the territory of Palestine would be refered to as The British Mandate of Palestine (1917 [officially 1922]-1948) or part of The Ottoman Empire (1516-1917). All of those eras have their own flags, The British Mandate of Palestine had its own flag and the Ottoman Empire had a different flag pre-1973. I believe the some 514.6 million of us deserve a flag icon. not necessarily a unique flag, but perhaps grouped together somehow in a template reading {{flagicon|NAM}}, {{flagicon|North America}}, or {{flagicon|NorthAmerica}}. This will help greatly in places such as:

Um. If a region doesn't have an official flag, don't use one. If you want the table to look uniform, take all the flags out. Flags really are overused. In the example you point out, the flags are pure visual decoration. Any 'flag' you use for North America will be less recognisable than the text "North America". You could put a footnote where you say that in this case "North America" refers to Mexico, Canada and the USA, and put the individual country flags there, but really, for a list of computer games, or wherever that table came from, flags are not needed. That would be good. An example for usage would be this: AS Monaco FC, but instead of the link in the flag linking to France, it links to the French Football Federation. However, I would like to implement it more in the rugby national squad templates as a first step. Because different flags are different shapes. If you look at the infobox of Flag of the United Kingdom you will see it contains "Proportion: 1:2", which means that the height and width of the flag are in the ratio 1:2, i.e. the flag is twice as wide as it is high. Contrast this with the infobox for Flag of Italy, which says "Proportion: 2:3", indicating that the height and width of the flag are in the ratio 2:3 (i.e. the flag is 1.5 times as wide as it is high). The Flag of Switzerland () has a proportion of "1:1", i.e. it is square. Is there a way to stop the flagicon template from being sorted along with the rest of the contents of a cell in a table (without separating the flagicon into a different cell)? For example:

May I make a suggestion for the display of the US flag as an icon? The current default results in a icon of 23x12px. However the US flag has 13 stripes. The mapping of 13 stripes to 12 lines results in blurry stripes:

 23x12px: Icon width of 23px (currently the default)
 24x13px: Width of 24px

I don't know what the best answer to this is, but I would suggest either changing the default (for all) to 24px, or having an icon for the US flag with 23x13px (accepting that the proportions are then slightly off from the nominal 10:19). Tony Mach (talk) 10:08, 5 March 2014 (UTC)

Hello all, Following the instructions from here to export this template onto another wiki, I found out that the template gave two red links, looking for Template:Country data and Template:Documentation, which I can assume is only there for the instructions on how to use the template and is not vital to make the template work. Upon exporting Template:Country data using the same methods, I still end up having Template:Country data show up as a red link and being unable to use the template. List of FIFA country codes indicates that "BUR" is an obsolete code for Burma, whereas it's the current IOC code for Burkina Faso, so that's why {{flagicon|BUR}} displays the Burkina Faso flag (). Template:Country data Canada had previously used the file Canadian Army Flag.svg (which now redirects to the new file) for the army variant. This file was deleted from Commons on 22 May 2014, so I deactivated the variant and removed it from articles using it on 22 June 2014. I didn't notice the new file since it was only added to articles a few weeks after that, though it was already uploaded on 1 June 2014.

Since the badge in the new SVG is actually an embedded PNG image, and MediaWiki does not anti-alias embedded rasters, the SVG looks rather bad at icon size: . I'll convert it to a PNG image, add that to the template, and undo my automated removals. SiBr₄ (talk) 13:33, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

The Italian province of Piedmont has two flag variants (see the page Flag of Piedmont, which I just created). The one with the gold border is the "official one", although the variants are acceptable. The current {{flagicon|Piedmont}} (that is, ) is currently the "less official one", without the gold border. The source file for this is the .svg File:Flag_of_Piedmont.svg (here), whereas the gold-bordered source is the .png File:Piemonte_Bandiera.png (here).

I have added[11] support for |noredlink=yes, and also added it[12] to the documentation.

This allows use of {{Flagicon}} without knowing whether we have country data for that entity. It is useful when constructing templates which may refer to countries of obscure or disputed status for which a {{Country data Foo}} template has been constructed. In those cases {{flagicon|Foo}} produces a redlink, but {{flagicon|Foo|noredlink=yes}} produces no output.

The examples use the country "Xanadu". It is a fictional place, so obviously we have no {{Country data Xanadau}}.

• {{flagicon|Xanadu|noredlink=yes}} →

Instances of {{Flagicon}} themselves should not necessarily have an "alt" text when they are followed by an explicit text and link.

Unfortunately, this template calls Template:Flagicon/core but forgets to pass it the "|alias=" parameter so it generates a MediaWiki [[File:...]] link that contains an invalid paramter |alt={{{alias}}} which does not work

And there's also no test in Template:Flagicon/core to see if it must generate a correct "|alt=..." parameter in the image. This test should be that the absence of value for variable{{{alias}}} should eliminate the |alt=... generation in the image link but if alias was passed an empty string, an empty "|alt=" should be generated. So there's also a bug in Template:Flagicon/core where the alias parameter is not handled correctly (and actually not even passed by Template:Flagicon)

So for now Flagicon is broken, and inconsitant with {{FlagIOC}}. Look for example in List of IOC country codes, where both templates are used: attempt to copy its plain-text content (the content that is rendered for accesibility on Braille or audio readers is duplicated: there's the default alt text of the icon and the text of the link written after it, sometimes different; the default alt text of icons is generaly very bad as it just matches the filename on Commons). verdy_p (talk) 03:19, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

I see that there has been some removal of {{flag}} today where Mississippi is concerned due to recently passed legislation. Here's one such edit by Cordyceps-Zombie, but I'm sure multiple editors are making similar changes. This has the short-term downside of misaligning columns of text and the medium-term downside of creating more housekeeping when a new flag is adopted. I think we'd see less disruption of this type if some part of the template (or one of its transcluded components) were temporarily changed (maybe to render the MS flag a transparent box?). I readily admit that I haven't spent enough time looking at the template code to know if I'm posting this on the best talk page, but this was the best supposition I could make in the time I had available. I posted this comment elsewhere, and I don't want to seem like I'm nagging, as it were, or repeating myself, but beyond a single tweet, do we have any further verification of the use of the bicentennial flag in place of the recently retired former official flag? If the use of the bicentennial flag is not widespread, there are a variety of other designs that people and institutions have used to represent the state. I would say that if this flag appears in place of the former flag atop the Capitol building and in other "official" capacities, we should go with it. I've been working on the Special:WantedCategories backlog, of which about a quarter are the 437 members of Category:Flagicon with missing country data templates, which is clearly intended to be Category:Flagicons with missing country data templates. A search of template space suggests that it's probably something to do with {{Football squad player}} or {{Team table player}}. Hi, I've been trawling through my local football team's wikipedia pages, and I've noticed that the flagicon for Ireland seems to be...broken? The flagicon code is IRE, which should give the tricolour of Green, White and Orange, but instead it gives the Red on White Saltire of Northern Ireland instead, which, apparently is EIR. I've tried to sort it through both source and visual editing, but nothing changes, leading me to think this is an issue on the template side.

Going to deactivate this for a minute. The change has merit, but I hadn't been tracking this and should have. There are about 1100 pages to investigate for goodness/cleanup (see the top of the page for an explanation), which it would be best to do before we add this here. Are you willing to do that work? No, I'm not willing to do the work. I was proposing the change on a pure CSS reasoning. Personally, I don't even need the fix applied to all instances. Just those that don't even match .content a > img but have the "hack" applied to them and wrecking their aspect ratio (e.g.
