The 2010–11 season is Manchester City Football Club's 109th season of football, its ninth consecutive season in the Premier League, and its fourteenth season in the Premier League since it was first created with Manchester City as one of the its original 22 founding member clubs. The team finished fifth in the previous season, thereby qualifying for an opportunity to compete in this season's Europa League. The club is managed by Roberto Mancini who was appointed as manager midway through the previous season.
Season review
In the
The team began this season's campaign well, collecting four out of a possible six points against "Top 7" opponents Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, which was three points more than City managed in the comparable fixtures last season. City then stuttered for a couple of games against Sunderland (away) and Blackburn Rovers (at home), bagging only a single home point out of the six despite completely dominating both games, with (according to manager Roberto Mancini) at least 25 missed chances in the Blackburn game alone. City got itself back on a winning track again with a 0–2 away win against Wigan Athletic, which was the first time the team had ever won at the DW Stadium, breaking what some supporters had labeled a jinx for this fixture.
After the previous season's run to the semi-final of the
However, the team began its Europa League campaign in much better style, clocking up three back-to-back wins in its first three games. In the first leg 1-0 away victory over
Team kit
As for the previous season, this season's team kits are produced by Umbro with Etihad Airways as the shirt sponsor. Only the third team kit was retained from the previous season, although a new variant of this kit - utilizing white shorts and socks in place of the black shorts and socks - was added as the primary version of this kit. The main change to the home team kit was to the socks which reverted back to the classic full sky blue colour with maroon and white striped tops. The previous season's all-black away team kit was replaced by a new midnight blue strip sporting thin horizontal sky blue striping on the socks that the MCFC official web site (OWS) describes as “the dark side of the moon.”[5]
The previous season's goalkeepers' strips were also retained, though a new all-black strip has been added to the collection for this season, to be used primarily with the home team kit. Last season's all-green home goalkeeper strip has now been moved over to the away and third team kits, although it is still used with the home team kit when the all-black strip is considered to be too close in color to the opposition's strip (e.g., Chelsea and Newcastle United). The gold-and-black goalkeeper strip that was used primarily with the away kit last season has now become the new alternate (third) choice strip for the stoppers. As can be determined from the foregoing, which of the three team kits these goalkeeper strips are actually used with is not a hard and fast rule since any of these strips can be swapped around (if necessary) in order to avoid kit clashes with the opponents' team strips or the opponents' goalkeeper strips, as well as avoiding clashes with the strips worn by the match officials.
Note that the terms "away" and "third" as applied to the team kits this season is somewhat of a misnomer since the "third team kit" (in both its variants) is being used in games much more often than the new "away team kit" - which means that the "away team kit" is essentially the "third team kit" and vice versa. On 2 February 2011 there was a minor "kit faux pas" when the Manchester City team wore its regular home team kit for its away fixture against Birmingham City at St Andrew's, a fixture that usually requires the visiting Manchester City team to use one of its alternative strips (in this case, its third team kit since the midnight blue away kit also represents a colour clash) as the primary home team colours of both sides combines a blue shirt with white shorts. No explanation has been forthcoming yet as to why this mix-up occurred (because as per [5] which kits are to be worn in which fixtures is determined before the season even begins), nor why the referee, Kevin Friend, allowed two teams so similarly clad onto the pitch rather than insist that one of them first change its strip.

Player registration and competition eligibility
Starting in the 2010-11 season there will be new player registration requirements that must be met by every club playing in the English Premier League. Clicking on any of the topics listed below will access a brief overview of that topic. Overviews of the existing UEFA player registration regulations are also provided for the sake of comparison and because they also help provide a more thorough understanding of the actual implications for the Manchester City football club of both these sets of player eligibility requirements.
Player eligibility requirements
Premier League | |
---|---|
player eligibility requirements |
Within every Premier League team's (up to) 25-man registered squad, eight slots must be reserved only for players that meet the Homegrown Player provision (see below). If a Premier League team chooses (or is unable) to register the maximum eight players permitted for these slots then any unused Homegrown Player slots will be forfeited. A Premier League team may register more than eight players that meet the Homegrown Player provision up to a limit of the full 25-man maximum for the squad.
A Premier League team may also register in a similar manner any number of players (up to a maximum of 17) that do not meet any of the youth or homegrown provisions. However, if the number of Homegrown Players registered exceeds the eight slots allocated to them, the total number of other senior players that can be registered will be reduced accordingly, so that the overall maximum of 25 senior players in the registered squad is not exceeded. (1) Homegrown Player Provision: A "homegrown player" is defined as one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to either of the English or Welsh Football Associations for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21) [112]. (2) Youth Player Provision: For a young player to meet this provision he must be younger than 21 years of age, OR have turned 21 years of age ON or AFTER January 1 of the year in which the season starts, on the first day of the season. Thus many qualifying players will already be 21 years of age come the start of the season in question [112]. |
UEFA | |
---|---|
player eligibility requirements |
The new Premier League player registration regulations parallel the existing UEFA player registration regulations currently in place and enforced for club participation in the Champions League [113], Europa League [114] and Super Cup [115] competitions organized by UEFA, but with the following two major differences:
(1) The UEFA player eligibility requirements for Locally Trained Players are a little stiffer than the new ones stipulated by the Premier League for Homegrown Players. Under the UEFA player eligibility rules, four out of the eight slots reserved for Locally Trained Players can only be filled by players that have qualified for that status via the club's own academy, and which UEFA terms Club-trained Players [113] [114] [115]. (2) The UEFA player eligibility requirements for Youth Players are also somewhat more stringent, requiring that a young player have spent at least two uninterrupted years registered and eligible to play with a club since his 15th birthday before he is then eligible to be registered and fielded as a Youth Player in any UEFA competitive match. The comparable Premier League requirement does not stipulate any such prior tenure, and a young player signing with a new club who satisfies the age limit requirement will immediately satisfy the Premier League's Youth Player provision [113] [114] [115]. |
Squad status designation
Based on the UEFA and Premier League squad registration regulations described above each player that is currently a member of the Manchester City first team squad can be assigned a "Squad Status" attribute that designates his ability to satisfy those player registration requirements in any UEFA or Premier League competition in which Roberto Mancini may wish to select him to play. Such a Squad Status designation may only be one of the following:
UNDER 21 | |
---|---|
Squad Status |
The most lenient squad status designation (from the player's perspective) is "UNDER 21" because these players satisfy the Youth Player provision stipulated in the new Premier League player registration regulations [112]. Prior to the introduction of the new SQUAD LIST for season 2010-11, a club could not field a player in any Premier League match unless that player's registration with the Premier League was in effect. A club was only deemed to hold the registration of a player upon receipt of the Premier League Secretary’s certificate in writing to that effect. Such a notification for a player could take effect as late as one hour before kick-off of the match in question. In this regard, nothing changes at all with respect to the registration of young players that satisfy the new Premier League Youth Player provision. An unlimited number of these players are eligible to play in any Premier League match without any requirement for their prior inclusion on the newly introduced SQUAD LIST that must be submitted to the Premier League at the end of each transfer window. |
YOUTH | |
---|---|
Squad Status |
The next (less lenient) squad status designation is "YOUTH" because these players satisfy the Youth Player provision stipulated in the existing UEFA player registration regulations [113] [114] [115] IN ADDITION TO the Youth Player provision stipulated in the new Premier League player registration regulations [112]. Thus a "YOUTH" designated player is eligible to play in any Premier League match without any requirement for his prior inclusion on the SQUAD LIST (as defined for "UNDER 21" players above), as well as being eligible to play in any UEFA competition match without any requirement for prior LIST A registration with UEFA in order to do so.
These players do still have to be registered with either/both those governing bodies in order to be eligible to play, however eligibility to play in Premier League matches is achieved via the same extant registration process described for "UNDER 21" players above, while eligibility to play in UEFA competition matches is achieved via LIST B registration rather than LIST A registration. UEFA LIST B registration has no limit on the number of young players that can be registered in this manner, and a "YOUTH" designated player can be registered to play in any UEFA organized match via a LIST B submittal made no later than 24.00 CET on the day before any match in which the player is to play. The "YOUTH" squad status designation is considered to be more stringent than the "UNDER 21" squad status designation for young players because "YOUTH" status players have to have been registered with (and eligible to play for) their current club for a minimum of two uninterrupted years after attaining the age of 15 before they are eligible to be registered via LIST B in order to play in any UEFA competition, while "UNDER 21" status players have no such tenure requirement levied on them, and so they are eligible to be registered to play in any Premier League match as soon as they join their current club. Note that if a youth player is on loan to another club he is NOT eligible to play for his parent club during the period of that loan spell, so although his registration with his parent club will remain uninterrupted while he is out on loan, his eligibility to play for the club will not. Consequently, any young player who has been designated with a "YOUTH" status is always eligible for any matches that a young player who has been designated with an "UNDER 21" status is eligible for, but NOT vice versa. Therefore, an "UNDER 21" status designation always subsumes a "YOUTH" status designation. |
HOMEGROWN | |
---|---|
Squad Status |
The next (more stringent) squad status designation is "HOMEGROWN" because these players satisfy both the Association-trained Player provision stipulated in the existing UEFA player registration regulations [113] [114] [115] AND the Homegrown Player provision stipulated in the new Premier League player registration regulations [112]. The actual terminology used by UEFA for such players is a "locally trained player" that is also an "association-trained player" - which, since it is a bit of a mouthful, is why the Premier League terminology is being favored here.
The senior players designated with this status are currently the only players whose names can be validly entered in slots 18 through 25 of the SQUAD LIST in order to attain eligibility to play in Premier League game fixtures scheduled to occur in that registration period. Only senior squad players that satisfy the new Premier League Homegrown Player provision can be registerd to play via one of these eight slots, and if a Premier League club does not have eight such players registered on its own books that meet this requirement, it must forfeit a possible player registration for each player that it falls short of that number (i.e., for each of the eight SQUAD LIST slots that it has to leave blank). If one of these eight slots is used to incorrectly register a player that does not meet the Premier League Homegrown Player provision then that slot will be forfeited for registration use by any other player in that registration period AND the invalidly registered player will not be eligible to play in any Premier League matches covered by that registration period, even if he was subsequently re-registered via a vacant slot in one of the other 17 slots on the SQUAD LIST form. Similarly, these same senior squad players are currently the only players whose names can be validly entered in one of four slots on the LIST A form that permit the registration of players satisfying the UEFA "association-trained player" provision to attain eligibility to participate in the pertinent UEFA competition game fixtures scheduled to occur in that registration period. Only senior squad players that satisfy the existing UEFA Association-trained Player provision may be registerd to play via one of these four slots, and if a club does not have four such players registered on its own books that meet this requirement, it must forfeit a possible player registration for each player that it falls short of that number (i.e., for each of the four LIST A slots that it has to leave blank). If one of these four slots is used to incorrectly register a player that does not meet the UEFA Association-trained Player provision then that slot will be forfeited for registration use by any other player in that registration period AND the invalidly registered player will not be eligible to play in any UEFA competition matches covered by that registration period, even if he was subsequently re-registered via a vacant slot in one of the 17 "free player" slots on the LIST A form. Note that not only can the names of these senior "homegrown players" be validly included in one of those four/eight specifically designated slots on the respective SQUAD LIST and LIST A forms in order to attain eligibility to play in the corresponding Premier League or pertinent UEFA competition matches, but they can also be validly included in any of the other 17 slots on those forms in order to attain that same eligibility to play. |
ACADEMY GRADUATE | |
---|---|
Squad Status |
The next (more stringent) squad status designation is "ACADEMY GRADUATE" because these players satisfy the Club-trained Player provision stipulated in the existing UEFA player registration regulations [113] [114] [115]. The actual terminology used by UEFA for such players is a "locally trained player" that is also a "club-trained player" - which, since this too is a bit of a mouthful, is why the term "ACADEMY GRADUATE" is being used in preference here.
The senior players designated with this status are currently the only players whose names can be validly entered in one of four slots on the LIST A form that permit the registration of players satisfying the UEFA Club-trained Player provision to attain eligibility to participate in the pertinent UEFA competition game fixtures scheduled to occur in that registration period. Only senior squad players that satisfy the existing UEFA Club-trained Player provision may be registered to play via one of these four slots, and if a club does not have four such players registered on its own books that meet this requirement, it must forfeit a possible player registration for each player that it falls short of that number (i.e., for each of the four LIST A slots that it has to leave blank). If one of these four slots is used to incorrectly register a player that does not meet the UEFA Club-trained Player provision then that slot will be forfeited for registration use by any other player in that registration period AND the invalidly registered player will not be eligible to play in any UEFA competition matches covered by that registration period, even if he was subsequently re-registered via a vacant slot in one of the other 21 slots on the LIST A form. Note that not only can the names of these senior "club-trained players" be validly included in one of those four designated slots on the LIST A form in order to attain eligibility to play in the corresponding UEFA competition matches, but they can also be validly included in any of the other 21 slots on those forms in order to attain that same eligibility to play. Since there are currently no comparable Club-trained Player requirements stipulated for clubs participating in the Premier League competition, players designated with an "ACADEMY GRADUATE" squad status should be regarded as being exactly the same as players designated with a "HOMEGROWN" squad status (see above) for the purposes of satisfying the player registration requirements stipulated for squads submitted to the Premier League via the SQUAD LIST. Consequently, a "HOMEGROWN" squad status designation always subsumes an "ACADEMY GRADUATE" squad status designation - viz. all "ACADEMY GRADUATE" status players are also "HOMEGROWN" status players, but NOT vice versa. |
FOREIGN | |
---|---|
Squad Status |
The fifth (and most restrictive) squad status designation is "FOREIGN" (which is really just a more convenient term for "Not Homegrown", while the corresponding UEFA term is "Free Player") because these players do not satisfy any of the youth nor homegrown player provisions of either UEFA or the Premier League. Consequently, it is currently only possible for these players to be registered for eligibility to play in the pertinent UEFA competition games and/or the Premier League match fixtures scheduled to occur in that registration period via assignment to one of the remaining 17 slots (slots 1 through 17) on the respective LIST A and SQUAD LIST forms. Although there are a lot more of these slots on the LIST A and SQUAD LIST forms relative to the other designated slots, this is considered to be the most restrictive squad status from a player's perspective because those players designated with a "FOR" status can ONLY be registered to play via those slots, while the senior players with other designated status (viz. "HGP" or "ACG") are also able to be registered to play via these 17 slots in addition to the slots that apply only to themselves due to their different levels of local training.
Note that young players that satisfy the Premier League Youth Player provision yet fail to meet the more stringent conditions of the comparable UEFA Youth Player provision (viz. players having "U21" rather than "YTH" squad status), CANNOT be LIST B registered for any of the UEFA competitions. Consequently, those players must be registered to play in any of the UEFA competitions via a LIST A "Free Player" slot. |
Explanations and definitions of select terminology
The Squad Status and Player Eligibility codes defined below have been derived from information contained in the UEFA and Premier League rules and regulations (R&R) publications for the 2010-11 season as published on the official web sites of those respective football governing organizations. [113] [114] [115] [112]
Squad Status
Squad Status | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Code | Player Status | Status Description | UEFA Terminology | Premier League Terminology | Status Implication |
U21 | UNDER 21 | A young player that satisfies the Premier League Youth Player provision | NOT APPLICABLE | A junior player that is not required to be included on the new SQUAD LIST in order to be eligible to play in any Premier League match. For such young players, registration with the Premier League in order to be eligible to play in any league game is the same process that it has always been. | Player does not require to be included on the new SQUAD LIST (but still requires to be registered with the Premier League) in order to be eligible to play in any Premier League game scheduled during the current registration period. |
YTH | YOUTH | A young player that satisfies the UEFA Youth Player provision | A junior player that may be registered for eligibility to play in any UEFA competition game via one of the unlimited slots on the LIST B form, which can be submitted no later than 24.00 CET on the day before any match in which the player is to participate. | NOT APPLICABLE
(NOTE: Because it is a more stringent provision, all young players that merit this status designation will ALSO satisfy the Youth Player provision of the "UNDER 21" status designation above, thus if validly registered with the Premier League they are also eligible to play in any scheduled Premier League game in which an "UNDER 21" player is eligible to play.) |
Player only requires to be registered with UEFA via the LIST B form (rather than via the LIST A form) in order to be eligible to play in any pertinent UEFA competition games scheduled during the current registration period. |
HGP | HOMEGROWN | A senior player that satisfies both the UEFA Association-trained Player and the Premier League Homegrown Player provisions | A senior "locally trained player" that is also an "association-trained player" who is the only type of player that can be validly registered to play in UEFA competition games scheduled to occur in that registration period via slots 18 to 21 of the LIST A form, but who can also be validly registered to play in those same games via any of the other 17 "free player" slots on the LIST A form as well. | A senior "homegrown player" who is the only type of player whose name can be validly entered in slots 18 to 25 of the SQUAD LIST in order to attain eligibility to play in Premier League games scheduled to occur in that registration period, but who can also have his name validly included on the SQUAD LIST in any of the other 17 slots in order to attain that same eligibility to play. | If his name is validly included on the SQUAD LIST, player is eligible to play in any Premier League game scheduled during the current registration period; and if his name is validly registered via the LIST A form, player is eligible to play in the pertinent UEFA competition games scheduled during the current registration period. |
ACG | ACADEMY GRADUATE | A senior player that satisfies the UEFA Club-trained Player provision | A senior "locally trained player" that is also a "club-trained player" who is the only type of player that can be validly registered to play in UEFA competition games scheduled to occur in that registration period via slots 22 to 25 of the LIST A form, but who can also be validly registered to play in those same games via any of the other 21 slots on the LIST A form as well. | NOT APPLICABLE
(NOTE: Because it is a more stringent provision, all senior players that merit this status designation will ALSO satisfy the Homegrown Player provision of the "HOMEGROWN" status designation above; thus, if appropriately registered on the SQUAD LIST, they are also eligible to play in any scheduled Premier League game in which a "HOMEGROWN" player is eligible to play.) |
