The final is upon us! We are down to our final 8. A massive 573 was our lowest qualifying score; this is higher than the 150 points needed last year and the 430 needed in 2010. Even in 2009, when points were acquired for mainspace edit count in addition to audited content, 417 points secured a place. That leaves this year's WikiCup, by one measure at least, our most competitive ever. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:
Grapple X (submissions) once again finishes the round in first place, leading Pool B. Grapple X writes articles about television, and especially The X-Files and Millenium, with good articles making up the bulk of the score.
Miyagawa (submissions) led Pool A this round. Fourth-place finalist last year, Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, and has reached the final primarily off the back of his massive number of did you knows.
Ruby2010 (submissions) was second in Pool B. Ruby2010 writes primarily on television and film, and scores primarily from good articles.
Casliber (submissions) finished third in Pool B. Casliber is something of a WikiCup veteran, having finished sixth in 2011 and fourth in 2010. Casliber writes on the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. Over half of Casliber's points this round were bonus points from the high-importance articles he has worked on.
Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second in Pool A. Also writing on biology, especially marine biology, Cwmhiraeth received 390 points for one featured article (Bivalvia) and one good article (pelican), topping up with a large number of did you knows.
Muboshgu (submissions) was third in Pool A. Muboshgu writes primarily on baseball, and this round saw Muboshgu's first featured article, Derek Jeter, promoted on its fourth attempt at FAC.
Dana Boomer (submissions) was fourth in Pool A. She writes on a variety of topics, including horses, but this round also saw the high-importance lettuce reach featured article status.
Sasata (submissions) is another WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist in 2009 and 2010. He writes mostly on mycology.
However, we must also say goodbye to the eight who did not make the final, having fallen at the last hurdle:
Hey again all :). So, some big news, some small news, some good news, some bad news!
On the "big news" front; we've now deployed AFT5 on to 10 percent of articles, This is pretty awesome :). On the "bad news", however, it looks like we're having to stop at 10 percent until around September - there are scaling issues that make it dangerous to deploy wider. Happily, our awesome features engineering team is looking into them as we speak, and I'm optimistic that the issues will be resolved.
For both "small" and "good" news; we've got another office hours session. This one is tomorrow, at 22:00 UTC in #wikimedia-officeconnect - I appreciate it's a bit late for Europeans, but I wanted to juggle it so US east coasters could attend if they wanted :). Hope to see you all there!
"Dominating" is definitively the word, keep up the excellent work!

Word counts
Hi. You seemed to have a spot of bother with the word counts on your copy edits for the drive, and as I'm an interfering old so-and-so, I checked them and have updated your section of the drive page. You're entitled to a couple of hundred more words than you claimed. Are you comfortable with the word counts, or can I offer help? By the way, don't forget to remove the copy edit tag when you finish an article. --Stfg (talk) 16:55, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
Could you offer help? I just got (and still am) slightly confused.. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 16:58, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
Yes, glad to help. Are you using the DrPDA tool or something else? (Just going out to mow the lawn before it's dark. Will look in again later. No need for a talkback as I'll watchlist you.) --Stfg (talk) 17:19, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. I didn't know how to count the size of a single section, but I see that I could use a word processor. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 09:08, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Yes. By the way, a word processor may count a few "words" that the DrPDA tool wouldn't. Don't worry about that; we
... and also, DrPDA doesn't count text in tables and lists. If you're copy editing them as opposed to them just being data (score sheets, dates of episodes and the like), feel free to use the word processor trick and add them. --Stfg (talk) 10:17, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Hi there. I was looking over your contributions to the drive so far, and I have a few concerns. Your edits to
QUINN group have a few issues. First, the tag called for fixing the divisions subsections, by correcting prose, spacing, and section lengths. It appears that all you did there was remove a few spaces and change one sentence. For Hui'an County, you removed, rather than copy edited, about 95% of the article's content. Finally, for French Algeria
, you made only a few edits to the section where the tag was placed, but claimed the entire article's word count on your list.
We only include the word count in the section tagged for such cases; the same occurred in the QUINN article, and claiming credit for the full original word count of Hui'an County after wholesale removal really goes against the spirit of the drive. Some of your other work, such as on Gruppo Bertone, looks better, but for now, I'm going to mark those three articles as no credit, pending additional work and/or changes in the word count credit claimed, per what I've said above. I do appreciate your obvious enthusiasm for the drive though, and hope you'll be able to make more substantial contributions going forward. —Torchiesttalkedits 13:20, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Oops, and now I see that Stfg already mentioned some of this above. To get the count for a section, just click the section edit link, then preview with no changes. You can use the word count tool on the preview to get the section word count; no external word processor required. —Torchiesttalkedits 13:28, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, Torchiest. That's a much better way to handle sections. The stuff in Hui'an County looks like a machine translation, but it seems not to be from any foreign wikipedia, so tagging as {{Rough translation}} would be no use. I'd have deleted it as you did, TAP, but my edit summary would only have said "unintelligible", not mentioning copyvio unless you have concrete evidence, as that's a serious allegation. I would only count the words from the sections I did edit. Please take a look at my re-edit of the section of French Algeria, where the edit summary contains csome pointers. Best, --Stfg (talk) 15:15, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Thine Antique Pen ! I have started my second editor review at Wikipedia:Editor review/TheGeneralUser (2). I will be greatly delighted, thankful and valued to have your review for me regarding my editing and possible candidate for Adminship. I see you also evaluate possible candidates for Adminship as you had chosen to do so on Wikipedia:Request an RfA nomination, so do evaluate me too! As you are a experienced and long term Wikipedian so i have asked for your kind review. Take your time to review my editing and give the best review that you can :). Feel free to ask me any questions you would like to on the review page itself. It will be a great honor to have you review me for which I will truly feel appreciated and helpful! I always work to improve Wikipedia and make it a more better place to be for Everyone :). Regards and Happy Editing! TheGeneralUser (talk) 19:38, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
This has been a misunderstanding observed by some users. With all due respect Thine Antique Pen this is not Canvassing, see Wikipedia talk:Requests for adminship#Things to Keep in Mind before running for RfA where User:Jc37 had replied to another sockpuppet who had accused the same thing. You had also given your name at Wikipedia:Request an RfA nomination where i had contacted the editors. As Jc37 says It's not canvassing, until after a discussion goes "live". Until then, people can apparently chat about potential discussions all they want. I am not asking for any RfA votes, this is just a kind request for a Wikipedia:Editor review where i have asked many users who i know and trust including you to for their review. It's your wish to review or not and i am not forcing anyone to do it. Thank you. TheGeneralUser (talk) 21:07, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
Either way, the editor review is live. It only violates the spamming bit on that page. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 21:13, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
I never even thought of spamming Thine Antique Pen, I can't even think about doing it for a project where i love to work. If i hadn't given the notice to some people then i don't think so i would be getting many reviews that i wanted just like which happened in the previous Editor review of mine Wikipedia:Editor review/TheGeneralUser where no one had commented until i had asked some users on their user talk page to do it, same way as i have done today. Please do not misunderstand me and have any doubts, I am always willing to work and improve for the betterment of myself and Wikipedia. Regards. TheGeneralUser (talk) 21:18, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Thine Antique Pen. I am doing quality spot checks on copy edits as part of the GOCE September copy edit drive. I have checked your work on Hydravision Entertainment, and the copy edit could have been better in several ways. The opening sentences say they're French and then goes on to say they're based in France. That's pretty redundant, so I combined the two instances. Normally companies are considered to be a single entity, not plural, so I changed "Hydravision Entertainment are currently working " to read "Hydravision Entertainment is currently working". There was a red link to Play Station 2; I repaired that. There were a few other small fixes. Here's the diff of additional edits I completed. -- Dianna (talk) 20:22, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
OK, thanks. I've previously only used "are", except in
I think this might be a British/American English thing. What to do for an article about a company based in France? I dunno.
I was just checking another one, Thimmanahalli, and I see that you chose to remove a large amount of material about what crops are grown and what are the names of the schools. I am not sure why you would do that, especially with the edit summary that the material read like a tourist guide? -- Dianna (talk) 22:27, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
There's only 81 words left, yet you took credit for the full word count. Here's another example: Gramsh. The article went from 1678 words to 191 words. I am not sure I agree with the removal of 88% of the article. Perhaps the majority of it was unencyclopedic and off-topic? But surely you should not take credit for words you did not actually copy edit, but only removed. You did not copy edit 1678 words; you only copy edited the 191 words that you kept. -- Dianna (talk) 22:39, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
If you're not copy editing it, please don't include it in your drive totals. It's not fair. -- Dianna (talk) 14:12, 5 September 2012 (UTC) In the future, if you are planning on making large cuts to the article, use the word count from after the cuts are made. Also, if large sections don't need any copy editing, please don't count them. Just count the sections that you actually work on. I am amending your drive totals to reflect the work actually completed on these two articles. Thanks, -- Dianna (talk) 14:23, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
This dispute has been going on for over ten years and there have been over 1,300,000 words posted on the article talk page (by comparison, all of the Harry Potter books together total 1,084,170 words). Over the years the dispute has been through multiple noticeboards, mediators, and even the Arbitration Committee without resolving the conflict, so a lot of wisdom is needed here. --Guy Macon (talk) 00:58, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

I noticed you removed a "false" statement on the John Squires (soccer) article. It is true Squires clearly did not die just prior to a soccer game against St. John's in 1968-you had a source saying he died in 2006, and another source showed that UConn never played St. John's in 1968, making that claim impossible. So kudos to you for removing that. However, you also removed a claim stating Squires was also the Huskies coach from 1946-1968. This was true and backed up by one of the sources listed in the article. Be more careful when removing false claims to make sure everything you remove is false. Thanks. No problem with the closure whatsoever :) It is just that AFDs are expected to run for 7 days min (unless a SNOW) and a NAC before 1 day where the case was not of SNOW, it is not that appropriate. Yes they had clear consensus but they were not SNOW so it'd be better to wait for one more day. TheSpecialUserTSU 14:57, 29 September 2012 (UTC)
Hello Thine Antique Pen. We're over half way through the final, and so it is less than a month until we know for certain our 2012 WikiCup champion. Grapple X (submissions) currently leads, followed by Sasata (submissions), Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and Casliber (submissions). However, we have no one resembling a breakaway leader, and so the competition is a long way from over. Next month's newsletter will feature a list of our winners (who are not necessarily only the finalists) and keep your eyes open for an article on the WikiCup in a future edition of The Signpost. The leaders are already on a par with last year's winners, but a long way from the huge scores seen in 2010. That said, a repeat of the competition from 2010 seems unlikely.
It is good to see that three-quarters of our finalists have already scored bonus points this round. This shows that, contrary to criticism that the WikiCup has received in the past, the competition does not merely incentivise the writing of trivial articles; instead, our top competitors are still spending their time contributing to high-importance articles, and bringing them to a high standard. This does a great service to the encyclopedia and its readers. Thank you, and good work!

I don't know why you are mentioning "There were no spelling/grammar mistakes" as I never mentioned anything about them, only whitespace issues (extra spaces unneeded). I personally don't think the article passes B class, for that size of article I expect double the references, which is why I reverted your edit. If you look at the

Thank you for the peer review, guys. Apparently, each Wikiproject has their own standards for B and C class standards, and the LBPD's chief recently resigned and the city underwent a fiscal emergency, which got significant coverage from the media, so I'll include that and add some more references and check out the Wikiprojects that the article is affiliated with's standards for promotion to B and C Class. Deletion review of AfD that you participated in
As you participated a few days ago in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Flat Bastion Road, I thought you might wish to know that the result of that discussion (to keep the article) is being challenged in a deletion review. If you have any views on this (i.e. whether to endorse the result, overturn it or something else) then please feel free to comment at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2012 October 2. Thanks for your comment. I tried to upload the gif version of the image several times without getting any error or other message, but the file did not load up. It seems to me that something changed in the upload wizzard without further notice. Therefore, I tried to convert the gif to jpg and upload it in the old fashioned way. Obviously, I did not remember which kind of info is mandatory to include. Hope everything is OK now after supplying additional information? CroesJ (talk) 19:27, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify
their content.
If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Bonkers The Clown (talk) 12:31, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

I refer to your very recent edit made a few seconds ago to the Steve Woodmore page. I know it's kinda unrelated, the World Suicide Awareness day, but what's wrong with adding that bit. It's interesting and in relation with the finals of the talking competition. (10 September 2011) Something extra for readers to know about. Do policy not allow us to add such extra information that do no harm? ;) Bonkers The Clown (talk) 12:49, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
They were blatantly not related whatsoever. Its like saying that someone was born on this day, the same day that something was founded. I wouldn't put unrelated facts in, as the day can easily be researched if wished. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 12:52, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

In my opinion, there isn't one. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 12:57, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
Well, yeah, maybe, I get your point. I added that part in just because I thought it sounded interesting, and it is in relation with the competition launched by him (it was organised by a suicide awareness company), so it seems like an indirect linking? The 2012 WikiCup has come to a close; congratulations to Cwmhiraeth (submissions), our 2012 champion! Cwmhiraeth joins our exclusive club of previous winners: Dreamafter (2007), jj137 (2008), Durova (2009), Sturmvogel 66 (2010) and Hurricanehink (2011). Our final standings were as follows:
Prizes for first, second, third and fourth will be awarded, as will prizes for all those who reached the final eight. Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.
The featured article award goes to Grapple X (submissions), for four featured articles in the final round.
The good article award also goes to Grapple X (submissions), for 19 good articles in the second round.
The list award goes to Muboshgu (submissions), for three featured lists in the final round.
The topic award goes to Grapple X (submissions), for three good topics (with around 40 articles) in round 4.
The did you know award goes to Cwmhiraeth (submissions), for well over 100 DYKs in the final round.
The news award goes to ThaddeusB (submissions), for 10 in the news items in round 3.
The picture award goes to Grandiose (submissions), for two featured pictures in round 2.
Awards will be handed out in the coming days; please bear with us! This year's competition also saw fantastic contributions in all rounds, from newer Wikipedians contributing their first good or featured articles, right up to highly experienced Wikipedians chasing high scores and contributing to topics outside of their usual comfort zones. It would be impossible to name all of the participants who have achieved things to be proud of, but well done to all of you, and thanks! Wikipedia has certainly benefited from the work of this year's WikiCup participants.
Next year's WikiCup will begin in January. Currently,

Where I'm having difficulty is moving from written policy to the community's consenus of what that written policy means in practice. The standard method of learning this is going out and making mistakes. While I've done that (and will continue to do that) I would like to supplement that approach by having an experienced user to whom I can ask difficult questions, perhaps one per week or so. To give you a sample of what you might be in for, here are two:

Thanks for reviewing my DYK nomination. I'm fairly new to the DYK process (that was my second nomination, third if you include my old account) and I haven't yet reviewed anyone else's DYK nominations as part of the process. If I remember right from my first nomination, once you nominate five DYKs you have to review another DYK during your own nomination process, but I didn't see that rule yesterday when I nominated a DYK again (maybe I just missed it, though). Anyway, I'd like to review in the future and help "pull my weight" in this process, but last night I couldn't find any information on how exactly to do so. I understand the basics (new, long enough, citation for the hook, etc.), but would you mind filling me in on how to do what you did for my DYK nomination or else point me to the how-to page if one exists? Thanks so much: I really appreciate it! Michael Barera (talk) 17:08, 11 November 2012 (UTC)
Hey Michael, these are the things that I check for when reviewing:
The standard new enough, long enough, 5x expansion done (
iff
it is an expansion) or 2x for BLP, the hooked fact is included in the article, and the article is fully sourced
I also check for copyright violations by comparing the sources with the article. tools:~dcoetzee/duplicationdetector/ is a good tool to use for this

Dear Thine Antique Pen, I put the following note which concerns your DYK:
Comment and question I've completed the reviews of all 14-in-1 DYKs. The question is whether the submitter should have to do a same or similar number. I know that at least some DYKs have not had that requirement. Some do, or at least the question has been raised. I leave that to others with higher rank than me to decide. 7&6=thirteen (☎) 11:55, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the correction. 7&6=thirteen (☎) 16:22, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
I copy edited more. I can't make any sense of this sentence: Finishing at the last in the previous season, the Delhi Daredevils added players like Mahela Jayawardene, Andre Russell, Kevin Pietersen and Ross Taylor to the squad. What do you mean? It is an odd way to express it. It is rife with ambiguity, and since I know nothing about cricket and can't divine your meaning, I can't change it. 7&6=thirteen (☎) 20:20, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
Trioceros cristatus New article. Long enough. I made a minor changes for clarity. DYK Hook supported by many sources. No copyright violation or close paraphrasing issues. First, we're continuing to work on some ways to increase the quality of feedback and make it easier to eliminate and deal with non-useful feedback: hopefully I'll have more news for you on this soon :).
Second, we're looking at ways to increase the actual number of users patrolling and take off some of the workload from you lot. Part of this is increasing the prominence of the feedback page, which we're going to try to do with a link at the top of each article to the relevant page. I notice that on Flickr there are 4 pictures of the

There is at least one tag in use that makes your picture not usable on Wikipedia.
Would you consider downgrading your copyright tags to ONLY "Attribution Creative Commons" so I could use it on some Wikipedia articles.
Do you have any other similar pictures?
Thanks for your consideration.

Hi, I saw you nominated Dr. Blofield at Wikipedia:Merchandise_giveaways/Nominations#Dr._Blofeld. He's retired at the moment, out of frustration with the Polarscribe case ... do you think he would still want an "I edit Wikipedia" T-shirt? Λυδαcιτγ 02:55, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
I think we should wait for some days, may be a month. He loves editing and he'll be back (that is my hunch). TheSpecialUserTSU 03:04, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
WMF don't hold lists of people's postal addresses, so they will need to contact people in order to send them T-shirts. By the time WMF contact Dr Blofeld, either Dr Blofeld might be editing again, or, if not, he could choose whether to decline the T-shirt at that time. There is no possibility of the T-shirt being somehow lost or wasted on the way to Blofeld's volcano. --

I would appreciate your thoughts. I hope that with the results of this survey, we will learn how to increase the amount of active, engaged volunteers, and further improve dispute resolution processes. The survey takes around five to ten minutes, and the information you provide will not be shared with third parties other than to assist in analyzing the results of the survey. Just an update to my comments here, I do not see a need for you to contact me prior to each and every bot request you wish to file, as this is not a userright which would have been covered by MBisanz's original request. I am satisfied that we have discussed bot requests and the general requirements prior to filing one and I trust your judgement on filing sensible requests. Bug in TAPbot?
Hey, TAP! Just wanted to let you know about what appears to be a bug in TAPBot. What happened was this: Tvoz moved the page on December 15th, and was quickly reverted (log). Three days later, your bot comes in and moves the talk page archives to where they should've been had Tvoz's move stuck, without realizing that the move had been reverted (log). I'd guess this is because the log, when filtered by page moves, doesn't show the reversion of Tvoz's move (log 2). Instead, the reversion shows up under the protection filter (log). No worries; I've cleaned up the page moves. Just thought I'd let you know. The main thread we've been using to talk is here, on Drmies's talk page; feel free to pop in if you like, but don't feel obligated; there were mistakes all around, so we're not looking to pin blame on anyone. ;) Thanks! Writ Keeper⚇♔ 15:58, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Good article nomination -
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1
Hi there! I recently reviewed an article that you nominated for being a good article,
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2
, which I unfortunately turned down. The majority of the article, aside from a few minor mistakes which I have noted on the review page, was superbly detailed and well-written. However, the plot summary and distribution > marketing sections need significant improvements, in my opinion, to meet the quality as a good article.
If you disagree with me, I encourage you to get a second opinion but otherwise I encourage you and others to improve those sections and the article as a whole to get it to the standard of a good article and renominate it, as it would be a shame to see this otherwise well-written and informative article not acheive such merit.
I don't think that you understand the process. Instead of instantly failing it, you should have left suggestions and put the article "on hold". Thine Antique Pen (talk) 18:44, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

Hello Thine Antique Pen, and welcome to the 2013 WikiCup! Your submissions' page is here. The competition begins at midnight UTC. The first round will last until the end of February, at which point the top 64 scorers will advance to the second round. We will be in touch at the end of every month, and signups are going to remain open until the end of January; if you know of anyone else who may like to take part, please let them know! A few reminders: *The rules can be found here. There have been a few changes from last year, which are listed on that page. *Anything you submit must have been nominated and promoted in 2013, and you need to have completed significant work upon it in 2013. (The articles you review at good article reviews does not need to have been nominated in 2013, but you do need to have started the review in 2013.) We will be checking. *If you feel that another competitor is breaking the rules or abusing the competition in some way, please let a judge know. Please do not remove entries from the submissions' pages of others yourself. *Don't worry about calculating precisely how many points everything is worth. The bot will do that. The bot may occasionally get something wrong- let a judge know, or post on the WikiCup talk page if that happens. *Please try to be prompt in updating submissions' pages so that they can be double-checked. Overall, however, don't worry, and have fun. It doesn't matter if you make the odd mistake; these things happen. Questions can be asked on the WikiCup talk page. Good luck! Hi there!
Hi Thine Antique Pen, I was wondering whether or not you would have time for an adoptee. I was perusing through the list of Adopters and yours stuck out to me because you mention you work with expanding/creating articles and working with the GA process and that is what I want to spend my time contributing to on Wikipedia. A little bit about myself... I was adopted for a month previously last summer but shortly after I was adopted my Adopter retired from editing so I've kind of been in limbo since then. I already have some experience with other parts of Wikipedia like fighting vandals, wikitext, tools, coding, templates and such due to my experience elsewhere. Anywho, I look forward to hearing from you. Cheers, —dain-talk 14:00, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

AFT5 newsletter
Hey all; another newsletter.
If you're not already aware, a Request for Comment on the future of the Article Feedback Tool on the English-language Wikipedia is open; any and all comments, regardless of opinion and perspective, are welcome.
Our final round of hand-coding is complete, and the results can be found here; thanks to everyone who took part!
We've made test deployments to the German and French-language projects; if you are aware of any other projects that might like to test out or use the tool, please let me know :).
Developers continue to work on the upgraded version of the feedback page that was discussed during our last office hours session, with a prototype ready for you to play around with in a few weeks.
That's all for now! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 16:14, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
Signups are now closed; we have our final 127 contestants for this year's competition. 64 contestants will make it to the next round at the end of February, but we're already seeing strong scoring compared to previous years. Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) currently leads, with 358 points. At this stage in 2012, the leader (Grapple X (submissions)) had 342 points, while in 2011, the leader had 228 points. We also have a large number of scorers when compared with this stage in previous years. 12george1 (submissions) was the first competitor to score this year, as he was last year, with a detailed good article review. Some other firsts:
Featured articles, portals and topics, as well as good topics, are yet to feature in the competition.
This year, the bonus points system has been reworked, with bonus points on offer for old articles prepared for did you know, and "multiplier" points reworked to become more linear. For details, please see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There have been some teething problems as the bot has worked its way around the new system, but issues should mostly be ironed out- please report any problems to the WikiCup talk page. Here are some participants worthy of note with regards to the bonus points:
Hawkeye7 (submissions) has the highest overall bonus points, as well as the highest scoring article, thanks to his work on Enrico Fermi, now a good article. The biography of such a significant figure to the history of science warrants nearly five times the normal score.
HueSatLum (submissions) claimed bonus points for René Vautier and Nicolas de Fer, articles that did not exist on the English Wikipedia at the start of the year; a first for the WikiCup. The articles were eligible for bonus points because of fact they were both covered on a number of other Wikipedias.
Also, a quick mention of
oddest article of the WikiCup this year: did you know that the Fucking mayor objected to Fucking Hell
on the grounds that there was no Fucking brewery? The gauntlet has been thrown down; can anyone beat it?
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on
A few months ago, you participated in a discussion on Wikipedia talk:Did you know about Gibraltar-related DYKs on the Main Page. I am proposing that the temporary restrictions on such DYKs, which were imposed in September 2012, should be lifted and have set out a case for doing so at Wikipedia talk:Did you know/Gibraltar-related DYKs. If you have a view on this, please comment at that page. Prioryman (talk) 21:59, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

New Article Feedback version available for testing
Hey all.
As promised, we've built a set of improvements to the Article Feedback Tool, which can be tested through the links here. Please do take the opportunity to play around with it, let me know of any bugs, and see what you think :).
A final reminder that the Request for Comment on whether AFT5 should be turned on on Wikipedia (and how) is soon to close; for those of you who have not submitted an opinion or !voted, it can be found here.
I am willing to review this, but before I started I thought I would check to make sure you are still around to respond to any potential questions. AIRcorn(talk) 01:12, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
Round 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.
Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:
Miyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
Casliber (submissions), due in no small part to Canis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission with Keilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.
is the first featured portal this year. The featured portal process is one of the less well-known featured processes, and featured portals have traditionally had little impact on WikiCup scores.
in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...
March sees the
to-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is an an effort from WikiCup participants
to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!
A few final administrative issues. From now on, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on
Thanks for your very helpful assessment of the GAR for Photovoltaic power station, but there are two things that I would like to call your attention to. First, the GA review page needs to be transcluded onto the talk page so that everyone can see it and act on the review recommendations. Second, "Reassessment discussions which are still active should not be closed unless there is a clear consensus for a particular action, or more than 4 weeks have passed since the article was listed here. All articles should be listed for at least 7 days, unless there is a procedural mistake and a GAR is not appropriate." So I can do the transclusion, and will start working on the article. Since it is from two months ago it is going to need to be a new GAR, though, which I will, or someone else will do when the issues you have identified have been fixed. Normally what is done is the reviewer allows someone to fix the issues found, and if they are not fixed, then it is failed. Apteva (talk) 21:13, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
I meant to quick fail it for the poor referencing. Second, it was not a Good Article Reassessment, it was a Good Article Nomination. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 10:49, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
The references have been added now. Could you take a look at it again and see if anything else needs to be fixed, or would you recommend a new GAN? Apteva (talk) 21:42, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

We are halfway through round two. Pool A sees the strongest competition, with five out of eight of its competitors scoring over 100, and Pool H is lagging, with half of its competitors yet to score. WikiCup veterans lead overall; Pool A's Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (2010's winner) leads overall, with poolmate Miyagawa (submissions) (a finalist in 2011 and 2012) not far behind. Pool F's Casliber (submissions) (a finalist in 2010, 2011 and 2012) is in third. The top two scorers in each pool, as well as the next highest 16 scorers overall, will progress to round three at the end of April.
Today has seen a number of Easter-themed did you knows from WikiCup participants, and March has seen collaboration from contestants with
)). All of these subjects were covered on at least 50 Wikipedias at the beginning of the year and, subsequently, each contribution was awarded at least three times as many points as normal.
Wikipedians who enjoy friendly competition may be interested in participating in April's wikification drive. While wikifying an article is typically not considered "significant work" such that it can be claimed for WikiCup points, such gnomish work is often invaluable in keeping articles in shape, and is typically very helpful for new writers who may not be familiar with formatting norms.
A quick reminder: now, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. We go on what independent reliable sources say, not what "everyone" says. --
We are a week into Round 3, but it is off to a flying start, with
Sven Manguard (submissions) claiming for the high-importance Portal:Sports and Portal:Geography (which are the first portals ever awarded bonus points in the WikiCup) and Cwmhiraeth (submissions) claiming for a did you know of sea, the highest scoring individual did you know article ever submitted for the WikiCup. Round 2 saw very impressive scores at close; first place Casliber (submissions) and second place Sturmvogel_66 (submissions
) both scored over 1000 points; a feat not seen in Round 2 since 2010. This, in part, has been made possible by the change in the bonus points rules, but is also testament to the quality of the competition this year. Pool C and Pool G were most competitive, with three quarters of participants making it to Round 3, while Pool D was the least, with only the top two scorers making it through. The lowest qualifying score was 123, significantly higher than last year's 65, 2011's 41 or even 2010's 100.
The next issue of The Signpost is due to include a brief update on the current WikiCup, comparing it to previous years' competitions. This may be of interest to current WikiCup followers, and may help bring some more new faces into the community. We would also like to note that this round includes an extra competitor to the 32 advertised, who has been added to a random pool. This extra inclusion seems to have been the fairest way to deal with a small mistake made before the beginning of this round, but should not affect the competition in a large way. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please feel free to contact one of the judges.
A rules clarification: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on 29/30 April, which may be claimed in this round. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on

Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. This message is directed to users who have reviewed over 15 Good article nominations and are not part of WikiProject Good articles (the first message I sent out went to only WikiProject members).
So for those who haven't heard about the Recruitment Centre yet, you may be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around it (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:
Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with (at the time this message was sent out, 2 recruiters have volunteered), the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".
Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497).
Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along.
A message will be sent out to all recruiters regarding the date when the Recruitment Centre will open when it is determined. The message will also contain some further details to clarify things that may be a bit confusing.--Dom497 (talk)

DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.
We are down to our final 16: the 2013 semi-finals are upon us. A score of 321 was required to survive round 3, further cementing this as the most competitive WikiCup yet; round 3 was survived in 2012 with 243 points, in 2011 with 76 points and in 2010 with 250 points. The change may in part be to do with the fact that more articles are now awarded bonus points, in addition to more competitive play. Reaching the final has, in the past, required 573 points (2012, a 135% increase on the score needed to reach round 4), 150 points (2011, a 97% increase) and 417 points (2010, a 72% increase). This round has seen over a third of participants claiming points for featured articles (with seven users claiming for multiple featured articles) and most users have also gained bonus points. However, the majority of points continue to come from good articles, followed by did you know articles. In this round, every content type was utilised by at least one user, proving that the WikiCup brings together content contributors from all corners of the project.
Round 3 saw a number of contributions of note.

This year's final is upon us. Our final eight, in order of last round's score, are:
Hawkeye7 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer who has contributed on topics of military history and physics, including a number of high-importance topics. Good articles have made up the bulk of his points, but he has also scored a great deal of bonus points. He has the second highest score overall so far, with more than 3000 points accumulated.
Casliber (submissions), another WikiCup veteran who reached the finals in 2012, 2011 and 2010. He writes on a variety of topics including botany, mycology and astronomy, and has claimed the highest or joint highest number of featured articles every round so far this year. He has the third highest score overall, with just under 3000 points accumulated.
Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 WikiCup champion, who writes mostly on marine biology. She has also contributed to high-importance topics, seeing huge numbers of bonus points for high-importance featured and good articles. Previous rounds have seen her scoring the most bonus points, with scoring spread across did you knows, good articles and featured articles.
Sasata (submissions), a WikiCup veteran who finished in second place in 2012, and competed as early as 2009. He writes articles on biology, especially mycology, and has scored highly for a number of collaborations at featured article candidates.
Naval history
, and he has scored a very large number of points for good articles and good article reviews in every round. He is the highest scorer overall this year, with over 3500 points in total.
Ealdgyth (submissions), who is competing in the WikiCup for the second time, though this will be her first time in the final. A regular at FAC, she is mostly interested in British medieval history, and has scored very highly for some top-importance featured articles on the topic.
Miyagawa (submissions), a finalist in 2012 and 2011. He writes on a broad variety of topics, with many of this year's points coming from good articles about Star Trek. Good articles make up the bulk of his points, and he had the most good articles back in round 2; he was also the highest scorer for DYK in rounds 1 and 2.
restoration
work leading to featured picture credits, but has also done some article writing and reviewing.
This last month has seen some incredible contributions; for instance, Cwmhiraeth's Starfish and Ealdgyth's Battle of Hastings—two highly important, highly viewed pages—made it to featured article status. It would be all too easy to focus solely on these stunning achievements at the expense of those participants working in lower-scoring areas, when in fact all WikiCup participants are doing excellent work. A mention of everything done is impossible, but here are a few: Last round saw the completion of several good topics (on the 1958, 1959 and 1962 Atlantic hurricane seasons) to which 12george1 had contributed. Calvin999 saw "S&M" (song), on which he has been working for several years, through to featured article status on its tenth try. Figureskatingfan continued towards her goal of a broad featured/good topic on Maya Angelou, with two featured and four good articles. ThaddeusB contributed significantly to over 20 articles which appeared on the main page's "in the news" section. Adam Cuerden continued to restore a large number of historical images, resulting in over a dozen FP credits this round alone. The WikiCup is not just about top-importance featured articles, and the work of all of these users is worthy of commendation.
Finally, the usual notices: If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on

In 30 days, we will know the identity of our 2013 WikiCup champion. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) currently leads; if that lead is held, she will become the first person to have won the WikiCup twice. Sasata (submissions), Hawkeye7 (submissions)—who has never participated in the competition before—and Casliber (submissions) follow. The majority of points in this round have come from a mix of good articles and bonus points. This final round is seeing contributions to a number of highly important topics; recent submissions include Phoenix (constellation) (FA by Casliber), Ernest Lawrence (GA by Hawkeye7), Pinniped, and red fox (both GAs by Sasata).
The did you know (DYK)
eligibility criteria have recently changed, meaning that newly passed good articles are accepted as "new" for did you know purposes. However, in the interests of not changing the WikiCup rules mid-competition, please note that only articles eligible for DYK under the old system (that is, newly created articles or 5x expansions) will be eligible for points in this year's WikiCup. We do, however, have time to discuss how this new system will work for next year's competition; a discussion will be opened in due course. On that note, thoughts are welcome on changes you'd like to see for next year. What worked? What didn't work? What would you like to see more of? What would you like to see less of? All Wikipedians, new or old, are also warmly invited to sign up for the 2014 WikiCup

Finally, the judges are awarding Cwmhiraeth (submissions) the Geography Barnstar for her work on sea, now a featured article. This top-importance article was the highest-scoring this year; when it was promoted to FA status, Cwmhiraeth could claim 720 points.
Prizes will be handed out in the coming weeks. Please be patient!
Congratulations to everyone who has been successful in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and a particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have achieved this year. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition. While it has been an excellent year, errors have opened up the judges' eyes to the need for a third judge, and it is with pleasure that we announce that experienced WikiCup participant Miyagawa will be acting as a judge from now on. We hope you will all join us in welcoming him to the team.
Next year's competition begins on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; it is open to all Wikipedians, new and old. Brainstorming and discussion remains open for how next year's competition will work, and straw polls will be opened by the judges soon. Those interested in friendly competition may also like to keep an eye on the stub contest, being organised by Casliber. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2014 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! Problem with Trechus asiaticus citation?
Hi! I was looking at Trechus_asiaticus, and noticed a weird discrepancy. It cites to trechus-clairville-1806g.html but it looks like it should probably cite to asiaticus-jeannel-1927.html instead. Was this just a copy-paste error? Something more systematic? Wasn't clear if the article was created systematically, by a bot, or what, so I figured I'd check in and make sure it is a unique problem before fixing. Thanks! -LuisVilla (talk) 01:05, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
I created it with my standard stub template - linking to the page of the genus on that site. Thine Antique Pen (talk) 21:40, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Why not link to the tribe directly, since that is what has the cited information? e.g., Jeannel 1927 is nowhere to be found in your citation - you have to make a series of lucky guesses about subgenus, tribe, family, etc., to get to that information. Seems confusing to me. -LuisVilla (talk) 18:53, 7 November 2013 (UTC)

Merry Christmas!! Missed you being around on here!♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:39, 21 December 2013 (UTC)
Hello Thine Antique Pen, and welcome to the 2014 WikiCup! Your submission page can be found here. The competition will begin at midnight tonight (UTC). There have been a few small changes from last year; the rules can be read in full at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring, and the page also includes a summary of changes. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work, and nominated, in 2014 is eligible for points in the competition- the judges will be checking! As ever, this year's competition includes some younger editors. If you are a younger editor, you are certainly welcome, but we have written an advice page at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Advice for younger editors for you. Please do take a look. Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! J Milburn (talk·contribs), The ed17 (talk·contribs) and Miyagawa (talk·contribs) 17:33, 31 December 2013 (UTC)
The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:
Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.
Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on
Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:
Treasury Note (1890–91)
.
Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
through good article candidates and featured article candidates, claiming the first first featured article of the competition.
Natalia Kills discography
.
Cwmhiraeth (submissions), who takes the title of the contributor awarded the highest bonus point multiplier (resulting in the highest scoring article) of the competition so far. Her high-importance salamander, now a good article, scored 108 points.
After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. After an extremely close race, Round 3 is over. 244 points secured a place in Round 4, which is comparable to previous years- 321 was required in 2013, while 243 points were needed in 2012. Pool C's Godot13 (submissions) was the round's highest scorer, mostly due to a 32 featured pictures, including both scans and photographs. Also from Pool C, Casliber (submissions) finished second overall, claiming three featured articles, including the high-importance Grus (constellation). Third place was Pool B's , whose contributions included featured articles Russian battleship Poltava (1894) and Russian battleship Peresvet. Pool C saw the highest number of participants advance, with six out of eight making it to the next round.
