This page is not an encyclopedia article, nor is it one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community. Some essays represent widespread norms; others only represent minority viewpoints.

This essay, "Most-read articles in 2009" (or Most-viewed articles in 2009), is an averaged ranking, based on various Wikipedia article traffic statistics (revised 13 March 2010),^[1] gathered informally all during 2009. Listed, in separate groups, are: the Top 1000 articles (below), then many of the top 10,000 articles, followed by scattered counts for other, various, popular articles (ranked by monthly interest below 20,000 pageviews per month).

The top 1000 articles focused on major events, for the year, with "Michael Jackson" (#11), plus his family, albums,

swine flu, and many celebrities or films ranking very high. The word "wiki" (#8) is still viewed by millions, along with YouTube

(#13), Facebook, and "Wikipedia" all higher than "Sex" (#24). Many blog websites, celebrities, and sexual words ranked above 500. The rank of "The Beatles" (initially #9) fell to 57th on December 12, when daily page-views dropped from over 100,000 to 21,200 per day. Moving into the Top 1000, this year, were:

The Top 1000 average over 5600 pageviews/day, but any low month, below 1500 per day, would drop an article's average by over 350 per day. Even in December, a low-interest article can skyrocket into the Top 1000 if a major news event causes reader-interest to exceed 1.9 million pageviews within a month (5600 pageviews/day totals 2,044,000 per year). Basically, the Top 1000 each get over 2 million views during the year, but might not be popular by year's end. For example, some topics related to "Twilight (2008 film)" had only moderate pageviews by November 2009.

However, many traditional topics were still high-ranking among the top 2,500 topics: Socrates #1325, Plato #830, and Aristotle #683, with Physics #1386.

Top 1000 articles

The following were the top 1000 in 2009 (revised 31Jan10 for rank, daily page-views & name). The data contains some errors, and many are approximate page-views (marked by tilde "~"), rather than the page-views averaged for the entire year. Also, some duplicates (such as "Watchmen" and "Watchmen (film)") repeat entries for similar names. Wikipedia pages (such as "Special:Search" & "Main Page") are also listed, so this is not a clean list, nor was it extensively analyzed. It's just 1000 high-count articles, as a rough-guess at popularity, and some popular articles might have been omitted. Each entry shows the daily page-views & percent:

Reminder about list inaccuracy

Again, for the revisions of this essay in July/November 2009, the lists of articles were thrown together within just a few days, rather than the weeks or months needed to accurately rank the more than 10,000 top articles, balanced across the whole year. The Top 1000 articles are especially skewed toward data from early-mid 2009. However, the articles below 10,000 have monthly-count figures mainly from March-May 2009, rather than collecting data for all 365 days during 2009, and dividing by 12 to calculate an "average" month.

Some entries (such as "404 error/") may be generated by bot programs. Perhaps the top 1,030 entries should be considered for the "Top 1000" articles.

Do not rely too heavily on the rank ordering of articles as shown in this essay. Rank figures are approximate for the year.

Estimating for 365 days

The data was averaged from website Grok.se (such as stats.grok.se/en/2009/Charles_Darwin); however, 8 (or more) days were not recorded for most pages, and had to be estimated. The non-recorded days were typically estimated by comparing the page-views of nearby days, but if the missing data fell on a one-event day, then that day was very difficult to estimate (such as the count with a shocking event). The missing days (non-recorded days) in the Grok database for 2009 are as follows:

September 23/25-27 (Wednesday/Friday-Sunday), or pages after "Speck" lack 6 days: 21/23-27
October 14-16 (Wednesday-Friday)
November 15 & 22 (Sundays)

Each Grok-webpage entry's year total (coded as "/2009/") omits all the September data, so data for "/200909/" was added into the total for each page, and the missing days were estimated as follows:

Sept. 23/25-27 (Wednesday/Friday-Sunday) were added as prior week Sept. 16/18-20 or averaged counts.
October 14-16 (Wednesday-Friday) were added as counts Oct. 7-9 or 21-23 or averaged when not a weekly cycle.
November 15 & 22 (Sundays) were added as the count for either similar Sunday November 8 or 29.

When the pageviews seemed to be steady for a particular title during the 12 months, then the missing days were ignored, since they would not significantly alter the average of the other 356 days of the year.

Because of the time needed to estimate the 8-11 missing days for most entries, the ranking of all entries became very tedious and took weeks to re-rank and edit. Hence, expect some estimation errors among those 8,000 to 11,000 estimated daily page-views. However, year 2009 was the first year when most entries could be easily estimated for all 365 days, because year 2008 had 20 missing days in the month of July 2008 (plus 3 missing in Jan./Nov.) which were very difficult to estimate.
