Many of the human migration articles on Wikipedia are in very poor shape. Here's my evaluation of the articles in the

series.

How did we get here?

There are several causes for the poor state of articles:

  1. Years of accretion of unsourced statements and POV-pushing, the same as the rest of Wikipedia.
  2. Targeted removal of the few bits of sourced information that do get added to an article, usually by someone who feels it portrays their own group in an unflattering light, or a rival group in an excessively flattering light.
  3. Lack of awareness of sources that can be used to expand the articles. In fact, many specialist encyclopedias are devoted entirely to human migration:
    1. On a per-country basis, examples include Magosci's Encyclopedia of Canada's Peoples, Jupp's The Australian People: An Encyclopedia of the Nation, Its People, and Their Origins, and the NZ Ministry of Culture's Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand.
    2. On a per-group basis, examples include Pan's Encyclopedia of the Chinese Overseas, Inouye's Encyclopedia of Japanese Descendants in the Americas, and Lal's Encyclopedia of the Indian Diaspora.
    3. A few ambitious ones even try to cover all groups in all countries, Ember's Encyclopedia of Diasporas being the best known.
  4. Users creating useless, zero-information substubs to fill up templates, usually falling into three categories:
    1. Substubs about the migration of their own ethnic group in every country on earth. They often justify this by the fact that some other group—typically Chinese, Jews, Indians, Greeks, Armenians, or Russians—also has such a series of articles.
    2. Substubs about the migration of every possible ethnic group to their country. They often justify this by the fact that some other country—typically the USA, Canada, or Australia—also has such a series of articles.
    3. Substubs created just to hold a number and a link to an equally-useless article about foreign relations between two countries in question, to ensure the foreign relations article is not orphaned.
  5. In reaction to the above, the widespread view that articles about human migration are "indiscriminate information" or "excessive cross-categorisation", that we're moving towards "40,000 articles about every national group in every country" and "making everything in Wikipedia about ethnicity", and that the only way to stop the tide is by deleting articles even when the availability of sources has been clearly demonstrated.

Migrant groups and the Notability guideline

Wikipedia:Notability states that "If a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, it is presumed to satisfy the inclusion criteria for a stand-alone article". Below are my thoughts on how various parts of this guideline apply to human migration articles.

Significant coverage

For a source to count as giving "significant coverage" of Fooians in Barland, it should actually address the topic of the community of Fooians as a whole, rather than merely focus on individuals whose identity as Fooians isn't particularly salient to the source. So:

  • Yes: A newspaper article about a Fooian association being set up
  • Yes: An academic paper about the performance of Fooian students in Barland universities
  • No: an article about five Fooians being kidnapped in Barland, with no comment about the wider Fooian presence
  • No: a review of a Fooian restaurant

Basically, this is just an application of the principle that "

notability is not inherited upwards
" (from "individual Fooians who live in Barland" to "Fooians in Barland as a group").

Independent of the subject

Sending country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Should Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the sending country should be considered "independent of the subject" for purposes of establishing notability of an article on Fooians in Barland? See for example

Non-resident Indian and Person of Indian Origin
which rely on a single source, a report from the Non Resident Indians & Persons of Indian Origin Division of India's Ministry of External Affairs.

Community media

Another question which might come up but in practise never has is whether "community media" (i.e. newspapers set up by and aimed at Fooians in Barland themselves, whether in Fooian or Barian language) count as proper sources either in terms of

WP:N
. Since of course, if Fooians in Barland set up their own newspaper, it's naturally going to write lots of articles about Fooians in Barland. My opinion on this:

  1. If you're at the point where the only sources you can find about Fooians in Barland are in community media, then:
    • the community is probably too small to be notable, and
    • the newspaper is probably not really independent of the subjects it's writing about, same as for any small-circulation local publication
  2. If the community is large enough, then their media probably qualify as reliable sources.

So the World Journal is a reliable source. The Newsletter of the Fooian Association of Lower Elbonia with circulation 100 isn't. In otherwords, an article in community media shouldn't count as one of the "multiple reliable sources" required for a topic to prove notability, but once a topic has proven notability, an article in community is fine as a reliable source for non-contentious claims.

However, an article by an individual Fooian about Fooians in Barland printed by a reliable, independent publisher should not be assumed biased and non-independent, unless reliable sources have come to the conclusion that the specific author's writings are indeed clouded by ingroup bias.

To do

Cleanup

  1. For assessment: all the articles in the
Non-resident Indian and Person of Indian Origin, Greek diaspora, Armenian diaspora, Turkish diaspora, and Ukrainian diaspora
    series
  2. No reliable sources cited:
    Pakistani Swedish
  3. Only source is for the population figure:
    Pakistani Australian
  4. Insufficient sources to demonstrate notability, lots of unsourced statements:
    Vietnamese people in China
  5. Stubs with sufficient sources that could be expanded:

Create

While trying to fix all these articles, I also tend to accidently run across sources on other migrant populations about whom Wikipedia has no article yet, so I created a few, and plan to create more.

  1. Have sources: Japanese people in Germany, Vietnamese people in Poland, Chinese people in Poland, Chinese people in Hungary, Koreans in Sweden, Koreans in Cuba
  2. Need more sources: Japanese people in Argentina, Chinese people in Angola, Chinese people in Namibia, Chinese people in Zimbabwe, Chinese people in Mexico, Koreans in Thailand, South Korean expatriates in Russia, Mongolians in Germany, Bangladeshis in South Korea, Indians in South Korea, Nigerians in Japan, Nigerians in South Korea, Thais in Germany
  3. Main articles: Ethiopian diaspora, Mongolian diaspora
